Glenn is the most connected member of the media that covers ACC sports. When all is said and done, the ACC Sports Journal will do a very in-depth story on our coaching search. I am sure that people here will have even more detail though.

for what’s it’s worth Andrew Jones on the radio said that his two sources are telling him it’s a 55% or maybe even 60% chance that Barnes will take the job…

also said that if we don’t get him physically out of Texas to talk he didn’t like our chances but if we got him into the state of NC he liked them a lot…

I would hate to think Barnes would seriously be looking at us and not at least come to campus to take a look at the new facilities and what he has to work with.

It’s going to be Barnes, Wright, Calapari or Haith. One of these four gentlemen will be our new coach for a long time. We are headed in the proper direction.

It would seem that the Barnes thing is gathering Mo. For real.

  6. choppack 04/04/2006 at 9:14 AM #

Lots of folks eating crow if we could get Barnes. He does have a great situation in Tejas, but here, he could have a great situation as well and could go down as a legend. He’ll never trump football or even equal the passion for football over there.

  7. Chuck Amato 04/04/2006 at 9:18 AM #

I thought WE were a football school???

I’m amazed at the number of people on PPride that so quickly latched on to yesterday’s article from the Austin paper. They genuinely seem to be threatened by the potential for Barnes to come to Raleigh.

I’ve thought all along that if Barnes REALLY wanted to end any possible speculation, he’d have issued a statement like Nate did over the weekend. That he has NOT, tells you everything you need to know about his interest.

The odds seem to be slowly tipping towards Raleigh right now.

I’m cautiously optimistic; however, why would Barnes show his hand until after UT ups the ante?? Even if he has no desire to come to NCSU, I wouldn’t dare say it out loud until I’ve got a fat raise from the UT AD in my hand.

I think Jones made an excellent point on the radio this morning about getting Barnes to visit. If we can get him back to his home state then his love for the state, for ACC basketball, and for the history of NC State might be what is needed to push him our way.

  11. choppack 04/04/2006 at 9:47 AM #

Chemba – You are correct. If he’s playing this, he needs to milk it a little bit. Too early to read anything into this right now – other than the conclusion that he’s at least listening to us and hasn’t said, “NO”.

  12. DavidThompson 04/04/2006 at 9:52 AM #

Great Story – Sounds promising..I think we are about to embark on a great new basketball era at NCSU. What excitement !

  13. newswolf 04/04/2006 at 9:54 AM #

I want to say on record that Andrew Jones doesn’t know what he is talking about.

  14. Mr O 04/04/2006 at 10:03 AM #

Should people eat crow if Barnes doesn’t accept? It is a longshot either way, so IMO nobody should really eat crow no matter what happens.

  15. TVP 04/04/2006 at 10:06 AM #

I think people, mostly non-NCSU fans and in the media, who were adamant that Barnes would not even think of coming here should eat some crow if he does.

  16. Sam '92 04/04/2006 at 10:08 AM #

IMO Barnes won’t come, because he has a great situation at Texas, they love him, and this situation will result in a raise for him, and for his assistants.

That said, I think he’s a great coach and if we can sweet talk him into coming, good for us. If not, there are other great coaches out there we can get, especially if we’re offering total comp in the neighborhood of $1.5MM.

Good find, BJD. Very interesting to see how this sort of thing goes down. I love the whole “plausible deniability” angle.

FWIW, Glenn’s article about the NBA rookie cap (right after the Barnes one) is fantastic too. Some very interesting information.

Sam, if Barnes doesn’t come I promise you that money will not be the reason. I have a feeling that State is willing to step up to any extent possible here. Our programs are doing fantastic in terms of generating income and fundraising.

We can afford to pay the price Barnes wants and then make it a decision based on his heart. At that point I like our chances.

I know Barnes is from N.C. but what about his family situation. Does he have close relatives here? If so, would this have any bearing? More importantly what about his wife?

  19. BJD95 04/04/2006 at 10:16 AM #

None of the “Barnes contingent” said that it was ever a sure thing that he would come here – just that it was a realistic possibility. So, the people who said Barnes would never even consider coming here are wrong regardless. Of course, one can hardly make them eat crow if he does not indeed come here.

But the fact that something does not happen is very different from it not ever being a significant possibility. Try explaining that to the mouth breathers, though.

Dave Glenn was just on the radio. He said for sure 3 coaches have been contacted through 3rd parties – Barnes, Haith and Montgomery. Montgomery said he is not interested. He thinks Barnes will give an answer today. It sounds like right now Haith might be the #2 choice.

  21. Clarksa 04/04/2006 at 10:19 AM #

Glen was just on 850thebuzz and said the three people who have been “unofficially” contacted are Barnes, Haith, and Montgomery. He doesn’t expect Barnes to come, but being from NC and Barnes being a “big ego guy” might tip the scales our way.

  22. GAWolf 04/04/2006 at 10:44 AM #

I don’t like the idea of getting Haith… especially as a second pick. A fourth or fifth, maybe.

  23. DC Wolf 04/04/2006 at 10:49 AM #

    Couple of thoughts-

For all the grief we give Fowler, I think he deserves kudos for what *appears* to be going after a top flight coach right out of the gate.

Second, though clearly it’s just conjecture on my part, my gut feeling is that Barnes is probably using the situation in the same way that Beamer used his dance with UNC-CH a few years ago – use the interest to get a raise. Nothing wrong with that, it’s how the game is played.

But then again, that’s probably just my “inner State fan” talking who knows that if something can go wrong for State, it will. 🙂

  24. J-wolf 04/04/2006 at 10:56 AM #

^^ Yeah, Haith as a fourth or fifth pick, but I’d rather go after another of the very high profiles if Barnes doesn’t pan out. But here’s to hoping that Barnes pans out!

  25. Lou 04/04/2006 at 10:57 AM #

i think its up to his wife if u ask me.

if Barnes stays silent on this then i like our chances. The longer he mulls it over the better our chances.
