Andy Katz: Calipari, NC State talk, Will Meet Again in Raleigh

Memphis coach John Calipari was set to visit North Carolina State with his staff Monday, a source close to Calipari told ESPN.com.

We loved this ass-covering by Katz who was dumb enough to take what a coach said to him at face value without doing any research behind the scenes:

If Calipari takes the NC State job then it would go against what he told ESPN.com last week. When directly asked if he would be interested in replacing Herb Sendek (who went to Arizona State), Calipari told ESPN.com “No.” He said he wouldn’t want to put himself in the position of dealing with all that goes into being in the Triangle with Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina’s Roy Williams. Calipari is the king of Conference USA and essentially rules that conference as the marquee program.

We refer Andy Katz to Caulton Tudor’s spanking today.

Calipari, staff not visiting N.C. State today

John Calipari and his staff are in Memphis and have no plans to visit North Carolina State today, a source close to the situation has told The Commercial Appeal, contradicting an afternoon report at ESPN.com stating Calipari and his staff “were on their way to Raleigh” to tour N.C. State’s facilities.

As of 3:40, the source said Calipari and his staff remained in town. Still, it’s unclear whether the University of Memphis has presented Calipari with a concrete counter to N.C. State’s offer that is reported to be near $2 million annually.

The Commercial Appeal learned earlier today that multiple UofM boosters are working with athletic director R.C. Johnson to compile a package that could push Calipari’s base salary to between $1.5 and $1.7 million per year. That combined with the $2.5 million annuity Calipari can collect if he finishes the 2009-2010 season may be enough, the source said, to make the sixth-year Tiger coach reject the offer to replace Herb Sendek at N.C. State.

sounds like Memphis propaganda to me… Katz is more objective since he is eating crow by reporting his information

sorry….this site isn’t the best with links when you paste them….yeah definitely doesn’t look promising. I mean the article states that they are still in town. the plane that is coming from memphis is coming in tonight and maybe they threw this article out just to say that they haven’t left yet to simply discredit katz’s article. I don’t think we can say either way right now whether he is coming today or not…..

A friend of mine emailed me this at 4:30: “Dave Glenn is reporting that Cal is meeting with Fowler as we speak. I’m not sure where he heard it, presumably the radio? (He lives in Raleigh, I’m in VA Beach.)
