Andy Katz: Calipari, NC State talk, Will Meet Again in Raleigh

Memphis coach John Calipari was set to visit North Carolina State with his staff Monday, a source close to Calipari told ESPN.com.

We loved this ass-covering by Katz who was dumb enough to take what a coach said to him at face value without doing any research behind the scenes:

If Calipari takes the NC State job then it would go against what he told ESPN.com last week. When directly asked if he would be interested in replacing Herb Sendek (who went to Arizona State), Calipari told ESPN.com “No.” He said he wouldn’t want to put himself in the position of dealing with all that goes into being in the Triangle with Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina’s Roy Williams. Calipari is the king of Conference USA and essentially rules that conference as the marquee program.

We refer Andy Katz to Caulton Tudor’s spanking today.

I feel like a kid at Christmas. Looks like Santa Clause is coming to town.

Let’s not jump the gun here. If Cal’s not coming here until tomorrow that still leaves Memphis enough time to talk him out of making the trip.

So, did the Memphis boards go login-protected now? I wanted to pop over there and see what the chatter was like after the ESPN article, but couldn’t get in.

Katz had some interesting facts in his article. He says that Fowler has had intermediaries working Calipari for weeks. He also says the meeting was last night, not yesterday morning.

J-wolf, just had the same experience

Ced’s father needs medical care, so a big NBA check was help in that cause.

speaking of the Memphis boards, they set a record with nearly 1,500 people on there at once today!! that’s probably why they went underground if they did.

I’m sorry guys…just an assumption on my part. No insider info on this one. All the pieces just fit together

we’ll all know official word long before a press conference is scheduled. anything you hear about any “rumored” press conference is premature and not valid at this point in time.

Hey Jeremy, I was in school why you were playing for us. I remember you toolin’ down Western in your beat-up taurus nearly shaking the windows out with a system that probably doubled the value of your Ford.

    Still got a kickin ride?

Hi Jeremy, I was wondering what had happened to you. The only reason I am a little uneasy about this rumor is that Katz is the same guy who last week said that the man at LSU was State’s number one guy when all along it was Barnes and now he says it is Calipari.

  18. 6-4Sequoia 04/10/2006 at 4:52 PM #

Sweet!!!!! You were on the English BBL All-Star Team in 04′?

I’m glad you’ve made something of yourself. Imagine if Cal coached you and molded you. Maybe you’d be playing for the Hickory Nutz now.

    What could have been……

“Jeremy was recruited to the world famous basketball programme at North Carolina State…”

World-famous, eh? I thought we were just a 2nd-tier program in an overrated conference.

    Piedmont Triad in Greensboro.

“ESPN probably wouldn’t run with this story if they didn’t have a very good source, but I’d like to see it confirmed by a second source. Or at a Calipari sighting in Raleigh!”

Obviously, you haven’t read all of the other crap Katz and the other national sports writers have written : ) They haven’t let the facts get in their way so far. I am choosing to believe the story right now though just for my sanity. If he does come, I hope Lee takes him to Amedeo’s so he can see some of the history right their on the wall. Maybe they can tell him where they will be putting “Coach Cal’s Room.”

They need to close this deal soon so I can get some work done!

  21. Jeremy Hyatt 04/10/2006 at 4:54 PM #

and as you can see i’m still albino.

  22. 6-4Sequoia 04/10/2006 at 4:57 PM #

I’m with you Stejen. I don’t feel we can truly trust Katz on anything anymore.

  23. Jeremy Hyatt 04/10/2006 at 4:59 PM #

the cartoon on comedy central? dr. katz?

  24. BladenWolf 04/10/2006 at 4:59 PM #

okay… it’s past 5pm and I gotta go home and change into my Pack tee-shirt and go over to my brother-in-laws (Carolina fan) house and just smile at him…

  25. cfpack03 04/10/2006 at 4:59 PM #

True, Katz is a complete jackass. But I doubt he’d stick us neck out for us if he and his manager (cause he def needs supervision) weren’t confident.
