Andy Katz: Calipari, NC State talk, Will Meet Again in Raleigh

Memphis coach John Calipari was set to visit North Carolina State with his staff Monday, a source close to Calipari told ESPN.com.

We loved this ass-covering by Katz who was dumb enough to take what a coach said to him at face value without doing any research behind the scenes:

If Calipari takes the NC State job then it would go against what he told ESPN.com last week. When directly asked if he would be interested in replacing Herb Sendek (who went to Arizona State), Calipari told ESPN.com “No.” He said he wouldn’t want to put himself in the position of dealing with all that goes into being in the Triangle with Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina’s Roy Williams. Calipari is the king of Conference USA and essentially rules that conference as the marquee program.

We refer Andy Katz to Caulton Tudor’s spanking today.

Sounds like a cover story. If he is on a plane to NCSU it’s probably for a press conference, not to tour facilities.

Did we confirm that there was indeed a team meeting in Memphis this afternoon?

Team meeting in Memphis to say goodbye to his players, flight to Raleigh for a press conference. sounds about textbook

There are only three flights currently listed from MEM airport to RDU airport today. The last one arrives at 4:19pm. Below is the link to the list:

Calipari …. Sounds good…Time to reward the “Wolfpack Club” if this happens

    Now we’ve got our coach.
Next item up is keeping big Ced
Then we should worry about Wright
I think that for the first time since we made our own shit sandwich and ate it by firing Valvano that everything is gonna come out positive.

  10. Jeremy Hyatt 04/10/2006 at 4:18 PM #

Ced needs to sit tight and see what the next coach has to say to him. I don’t understand, the offense would most likely flow more through him next year than this year, and all that jazz. Let’s not worry about big Ced for now…

ESPN probably wouldn’t run with this story if they didn’t have a very good source, but I’d like to see it confirmed by a second source. Or at a Calipari sighting in Raleigh!

Check private flights from West Memphis, Ark; Tunica, MS and Olive Branch MS. Olive Branch is a popular choice for private jets. Maybe they learned their lesson about tracking flights on Sunday.

When all this is over, all of us need to give a BIG THANK YOU to the guys that run Statefansnation. They do not make a gazillion bucks running this site a la Rivals or Scout, nor do they front a radio or TV station like 850 or WRAL.

Guys, if you had a subscription, I would pay for it. You’ve been a lifeline the last nine days.

    JimmyV,’
You have said you have insider info. Are you giving us that insider info or just your assumption?

This is awesome. I have been reading this site ever sice we finally got rid if Herb, and I have to say it is like crack. I am on it all the time reading what you fellow die hards are saying.
Cal coming to Raleigh is MAJOR. I don’t think he would come if he was not taking the job. Cal was my first choice from the get go. He will do way better than Barnes would have. Cal is an amazing recruiter and a great coach.
I like many of you thought we needed to get rid of Fowler, but I have to say that if he can land Cal I will take back every bad thing I have ever said about him. I think he has done a great job courting both Barnes and Cal.
The tides are turning my fellow die hards. The red and white are on the move. All my friends who root for both our neighbors in blue are getting nervous about Cal coming here to restore our rightful place as the big dog in the ACC.
I haven’t been this excited about the future of our program since Jimmy V was here. It is my belief that JC has bought into the fact that he can be a king here in Raleigh, and can become a legend WHEN he restores our program.
We all need to get on our knees tonight and be thankful, b/c our prayers have been answered.
ITS THE DAWN OF A NEW ERA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As would I. A t-shirt would be pretty snazzy too

What was that line in Pulp Fiction? “Let’s not start sucking each other’s $#%s just yet.”

If he is coming to Raleigh, this is good news. It can only help our cause.

And if he does come here to become the 7th coach in NC State basketball history, don’t expect the Pack’s fortunes against Carolina & Duke to turn around immediately. It’s going to take some time. However, I think he is the guy to do it.

I hope this continues to pan out in our favor. Gotta believe him coming here this afternoon is a very good thing though.

i think that wraps it up for today’s news briefs…

  21. DavidThompson 04/10/2006 at 4:30 PM #

I just want to say I have heard people speak badley about NCSU fans and all. But this message board just shows how dedicated we are to NCSU Basketball. The incoming coach (J. Calipari) will be swamped with thanks and praise for making such a good decision. I cannot wait until next season.

I just hope everyones assumption is correct.

The R&W game is only, what, 6.5 months away?

Are they selling tickets yet? 😀

Let’s hope that this is the endgame of a very long chess match — five years and counting.

I’ve got some friends who are Memphis die hards, and they are down right sick right now.

What was that about Ced? Has he said he was thinking about leaving?
