The new NCABB model is for players to leave after 1 really good season. This is encouraged by the NBA drafting philosophy where players are drafted after as soon as GM’s (feel they) can accurately evaluate their potential. TJ, CAT, and Lacy all left after their really good season.

Cal showed everyone how to maximize the number of players having really good seasons…simply pull in 4-5 OAD’ers every year and turn the roster over. OAD’ers who have a “disappointing” rookie year, merely a pretty good season, fill out the balance of their roster as sophs. Duke, Kan, Cheat, Conn, all employ some version of this strategy.

For the rest of D1, we need to recruit and develop players. Hopefully after 1-2 seasons of growth each recruit will have a pretty good season followed by a really good season (or at least 2 pretty good seasons ala Howell, Turner, Lo Brown).

Gott’s problem is players transferring just after 1-2 “OK” seasons (Lewis, Martin x 2, Washington, Purvis) or going pro after a just a pretty good season (CJL). We are losing out on the investment on our 2nd level recruits and never really cashing in on their productive years. Of course Gott’s strategy has been to backfill with xfers from other schools to fill this gap. While Gott has done alright replacing the talent, I do think we have lost out on some continuity as the team is reconstitued every fall.

Only way to break the cycle is to recruit more OAD’ers or find some kids that want to play at NC state.

Made the 3.5 hour drive from Atlanta to watch the game in horrible conditions. Main points from seeing the game in person…

MSU clearly better team due to stronger line play. MSQ QB had plenty of time to set his feet and pick out receivers. Brissett was under duress from the first play. Until the PACK fortifies it’s lines, there is no real chance to elevate to a consistent top 25 program….(This has been the case for 25 years with the exception of a few solid Amato years)

Our secondary did OK but was aided by bad conditions. MSU receivers had about 5-6 drops that could have made things worse.

Best chance to win the game looked to be to run to the edges and catch a seam. Seemed not to stick with this enough.

Coaching, discipline, and execution were lacking… Cannot win a game against a good opponent by throwing an interception on the first play from scrimmage then spotting the opponent a 3 touchdown lead. Roughing the passer on 2nd and 18 when all momentum is on your side to give the opponent new life. Disastrous trick plays ended several drives. False start on 3rd and 5 in 4-down territory. These are the red flag coaching/program issues that have to be addressed to start beating the good teams.

Hoping for better for better in 2016…

Cat looking like the dominant 5 start recruit we expected!

This team goes only as far as Cat can carry them. Very reminiscent of the TJW team from 2 yrs ago.

I don’t have a problem with SG. Good coach that inexplicably refused to play the selection game.

Interesting discussion about the selection process. From my observations VAwolf’s thought process is pretty straight on. Somehow, the selection committee has determined that it is their job to punish poor OOC scheduling. Hence, possibly deserving teams like SMU, Clemson last year Seth’s VT teams are left on the outside. A premium is also placed “Marquee” wins over consistency. A team that comes up big a few times then boots a few is given precedence over a team that just wins the ones they should. I guess this could be justified as selecting the team with the opportunity to pull a big upset or make a deeper run.

IMO the Pack needs a minimum of 4 more victories to get in the NCAA tourney. Any 4 of the last 5 regular season games should get us us. 3 will get us in if Cheater Hill is one of them and we win the opening game in the ACCT. 3 without a win against the Cheats probably means we need 2 in the ACCT to really feel safe. 3-2 to finish the reg season, no win at UNC, and a win against a bottom feeder on Wednesday of the ACCT leaves us right at the last team in/last line…probably out.

Up by 5 with just over a minute and up by 2 with 18 seconds. Don’t turn the ball over and hit foul shots and game is over.

Having said this, we consistently have key calls go against up in critical situations.

Sunday nights last call against Abu would NEVER go against the home team in Cameron or the hole dome. The play was executed perfectly, both players were jostling equally, ND player flopped and ref gave it to them.

Clear out called against Cat in last minute was weak and unlikely to be called against other teams (let the players decide anyone)

The not an and-1 against TJW last year in the Syracuse game could have gone both ways, but didn’t.

Last years UNC home game. Foul not called on TJ’s last minute floater when defender had to jump into him to get the shot. Mugging Foul on TJW turnover fullcout press not called.

Miami shove in the back tip-in for win (2 yrs ago?)

Don’t need to think too hard to add to the list.

It is simply unthinkable that so many critical calls could go against 1 team if it were simply random. Don’t think so? Go find the strange questionable calls that result in us winning. Bet you have to look long and hard.

While there are way too many bowls, and a team with 2 league wins should not be picky about bowl destinations, this is priceless:

“And which ACC school took the biggest drop during the resulting scramble? Go ahead, guess. Only the school with the fan base that’s already convinced everyone from John Swofford to Karl Hess is part of the conspiracy against it. Of course: N.C. State.”

PAPA: Just having some fun to start the off-season Think we’ll have some good, some bad next year but fall a bit short top tier status. Every one of the predictions is highly plausible if not optimistic.

Bottom line both TL and CAT had good and bad moments.

TL very good running half court offense but becomes much less effective with press or attacking defense. Needed to do little things, like sink FT at end of game, to differentiate from CAT. By end of year, ACC teams were abusing on defense.

CAT good in open floor and mostly solid (albeit not perfect) on defense. Struggled to find game when ACC teams just sloughed off and denied the drive. Came out of funk near end of season when he finally started to “get it”. High ceiling but lots to do in the offseason

Could not have made NCAA T without both PG’s but situation had to be resolved for next year.

    Good Luck to TL

    PG – Cat/? (Graham)
    SG – TL/DL
    SF – RT/CM/CM/KW
    PF – LF/KW/ABU
    C – KW/BJ

    Predictions:
    – TJ will go to NBA and will be steal of the draft
    – Davonte to PACK (as told by TLew’s dad)
    – BJ loses some weight but not enough to enter beast mode. Averages 20 min, 6 pts, 5 reb, and 4 fouls a game.
    – KW develops a 3 point shot. Gott uses big lineup with KW at the 3 spot when BJ not in foul trouble.
    – CAT and Nard with nice years 2nd team all ACC.
    – Pack enters last 5 games of ACC season near .500 in ACC, on the bubble, and needing “signature” victory, wins 2 in ACC T before running out of gas and legs give out to blue team. Pack gets 7 seed in MW regional, beats Tulsa in Rd1, loses to OSU in Rd. 2. 1 of 4 big men xfer due to lack of PT…..Way out on a limb here 😉

    Couple of thoughts…

    1. No real meaningful differences between last 4-6 under consideration
    2. Selection committee definitely takes punitive measures against horrible schedules. Saw Seth’s VT team get hosed after season much like ours and a late Duke win in the ACC T a few years ago. Fair or not, its the way things are.
    3. Count me as one who feels Vitale and K’s support mattered.
    4. TJW mattered. Best offensive player in the country. Potential “Danny Manning” type story line.
    5. I also think SFN’s tweets and Pack fan interest matters. We are a very vocal fanbase (and it matters).
    6. True case to me made that not for 3 heartbreaking 1 point losses, each with questionable calls going against in the the last minutes, we would have had 11 ACC wins and already been a lock.
