[Key 3:45pm Updates] Links to past scandal? Wheels for Heels – Roy waiting on facts: About which player?

Today, Roy Williams said that he’s waiting on facts before making any judgement on the whole PJ Hairston-rental-car-(or cars, plural)-situation (ABC 11). But there may yet be more to this than it seems.

Is UNC senior guard (just for clarity: basketball, not football) Leslie McDonald the latest over at the Flagship to go ‘rogue’? McDonald was stopped on Highway 64 West in Tyrrell County by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol on July 4 for speeding (79 in a 55). SFN acquired a copy of the citation from the public records in Tyrrell County. You can see the details of this citation here.

Of particular interest:

*McDonald is from Memphis and has a Tennessee driver’s license, but the Chevy Malibu he was driving is registered in the state of North Carolina. Like Hairston, McDonald was stopped while driving a car he didn’t own. So, whose car is he driving?

*The Trooper’s notes on the citation indicate the passengers said they were UNC students driving back to Chapel Hill.

*The registered owner of this car is Derrick Leon Parker, Junior, of Durham. The only other Derrick Leon Parker that could be found in Durham is apparently his father (Senior). Parker, Jr. has no criminal record per Durham County public records. But, the registered owner’s apparent Facebook page does not indicate that he attends UNC.

*SFN found a Leon Parker on LinkedIn, listed as a research assistant at UNC Chapel Hill. But, at first glimpse, this guy doesn’t look affiliated to Derrick Leon Parker.

*Derrick Leon Parker owns this house in Durham.

*So, SFN wonders: who was the other occupant in the car? If it wasn’t Parker (the registered owner), then why were these two driving this car without the registered owner with them?

*This is the Facebook page for a Leon Parker of Durham (here). Whoever this is, he is in pictures with two men who appear to be Haydn “Fats” Thomas and Tim Harrington.

*We know from the many recent media reports that Haydn “Fats” Thomas is the guy who paid for the rental Yukon that PJ Hairston was driving when he was arrested (WRAL).

*We also know from a McDonald tweet to @BRINTCITYNC that he got a phone from Fats Thomas.

"all I had to do was restore and activate it" Hmmm!

“all I had to do was restore and activate it” Hmmm!

*@BRINTCITYNC (Mirage 7.26) appears to be an associate of Tim Harrington, both connected to KISS Entertainment. We know that Harrington is an associate of Fats Thomas.

*WRAL characterized Fats Thomas this way:

[H]as a long criminal history and also left a trail of tweets detailing arrests, drugs, trips and relationships with former high-profile athletes before deleting his Twitter account July 1.

Some of the relationships with athletes from UNC, Duke and other institutions, bring into question whether he provided impermissible benefits which could result in NCAA sanctions for those programs.

*Also of interest is the relationship of Leslie McDonald, Fat Thomas and Iceberg Guards, a company Fats openly endorses. McDonald instagramed a picture of him and Iceberg Guards but that has since been deleted (here).

*There are also pictures and video floating around online of PJ Hairston underage boozing in Masonboro recently. And we’ve learned that Hairston was instructed to keep it locked up this weekend and explicitly told to go to church and do some community service. I guess shotgunning bud light in Masonboro is a little bit of community service for us ABCers.

I don’t know what it all means but there sure seems to be a lot of smoke and as our own BJD said “If there’s one truly predictable thing in life…it’s that stupid people tend to do stupid things. Thank God for that, in the Holes’case, stupid is as stupid does.”

After more than a MONTH, one has to ask what ‘facts’ that ‘ole Roy could he be waiting to learn? If all of the facts aren’t in by now, how hard are people really looking? Why wouldn’t all of the facts be in by now? Heck, when one reads a statement like the following from Trudi Random (Miykael Faulcon’s mother), one has to wonder if ole Roy and the Flagship are working hard to manipulate the ‘facts’ to their liking before sharing the ‘facts’ with the rest of us.

“I don’t like how things are going so I am making the choice to do something about it..this is a notice that I am not going to sit back and let my son Miykael Faulcon be the fall guy..so if this means trouble for me..folks getting exposed…me losing all that I have to save him..then so be it..I am a mother who loves her kids unconditionally…I put all that I have into raising my kids and I will be damn if I let my hard work be in vain..if you want the truth ask me don’t assume…”

Maybe, just maybe, the facts that Roy seeks will also provide insight into the facts that UNC never uncovered or shared after it became public that a single UNC athlete received 93 parking tickets on FIVE DIFFERENT cars that used NINE DIFFERENT license plates!? (Click here for a reminder) Perhaps if UNC had cared more about getting to the truth of the ‘Wheels for Heels’ scandal in 2011 then this wouldn’t be happening today.

Remember, this was an obvious BASKETBALL topic even in 2011. You gotta check out this link for even more review. When you do, you will see an awful lot about UNC Basketball star, John Henson and car/ticket issues in Chapel Hill. That is the same John Henson that shows up in tons of pictures and social interactions on FaceBook and Twitter with – you guessed it – Fats Thomas.

BREAKING from USA Today (2:50pm)

While we were pulling together our thoughts on this Leslie McDonald situation, USA Today posted this article to further support our question of the day — About which playerS would Roy be waiting to learn facts?

Four rental vehicles that are linked to Haydn Thomas, the convicted felon who rented the sport utility vehicle that North Carolina leading scorer P.J. Hairston was driving when he was arrested last month, have received a total of nine parking citations on the university’s campus since February.

Between Feb. 22 and May 28, the nine citations were issued for four rental vehicles that either Thomas or a Catinia Farrington, a woman who shares his Durham, N.C., address, rented from the Hertz location at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Rental receipts obtained by USA TODAY Sports that were crossed referenced by license plate with UNC parking tickets show:

* A 2013 GMC Yukon rented by Thomas from Feb. 14 to March 3 received tickets for an expired meter on Feb. 21 and lack of a valid parking permit on Feb. 22.
* A 2012 Camaro SS rented by Thomas from March 25 to April 15 received a ticket on April 15 for lack of a valid permit.
* A 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe rented by Thomas from April 18 to May 2 received a ticket on May 1 for lack of a valid permit.
* The Camaro was rented again from April 25 to June 17 by Farrington. The Camaro received a parking ticket on May 28 for lack of a valid permit.
* A 2013 Mercedes Benz 350 rented by Thomas from May 8 to May 30 received four parking tickets, one each for an expired meter on May 22 and 23 and one each for lacking a valid permit on May 23 and May 28.

[snip]

Between Feb. 14 and June 25, Thomas and Farrington spent $15,020.35 on vehicle rentals from the RDU Hertz. Farrington rented the Camaro from April 25 through June 17, a period of 54 days, according to a rental receipt obtained by USA TODAY Sports. Farrington was billed $3,249.00. Thomas rented the same vehicle March 25 through April 15, incurring charges of $2468.47, according to the rental receipt.

[snip]

In two telephone interviews on July 3, Thomas, 39, told USA TODAY Sports that he did not know Hairston and that Hairston followed Thomas on Twitter only because “I promote parties.” Thomas said that he rented the car for himself and that a friend, Miykael Faulcon, borrowed the car June 5 to go to a store when the arrest occurred.

Thomas said he is a friend of Faulcon from partying with him at clubs. When asked in a phone interview Tuesday about her son’s relationship with Thomas, Faulcon’s mother, Trudy Ransom, said the two have no relationship.

“I don’t know why he says he has a relationship with my son,” Ransom said. “I won’t comment about PJ Hairston. I will let this play out in court and I hope the innocent will remain innocent.”

Thomas rented the Yukon at 10 p.m. June 2 at the airport Hertz location, and the car was returned at 10:30 p.m. June 5. Thomas was charged $1261.64, according to the receipt.

The police report revealed that a 9-millimeter handgun and a magazine with nine rounds of ammunition were seized during a traffic stop that led to Hairston’s arrest on possession of marijuana charges. Three cigars and a plastic baggie that contained a half-ounce of marijuana also were seized.

Hairston, 20, was driving Faulcon and Carlos Sanford in the silver Yukon, according to the police report. All three were arrested and charged with drug possession. Hairston also was charged with driving without a license. Hairston, Faulcon and Sanford were each released on $1,000 unsecured bonds.

Thomas said July 3 that neither the NCAA nor officials from North Carolina had reached out to him to talk with him about his relationship with Hairston. He added that he is not a University of North Carolina athletic booster nor is he connected to a sports agent.

Could you imagine how bad things would be in Chapel Hill if they weren’t so great at living up to promises they made to the NCAA about their diligence to monitor social media? And, just how awesome their compliance department would be about clamping down? Remember, this is the school where

BJD, It was a bitchin Camaro….his parents drove it back from the Bahamas.

I am glad to see that UNC-CH is finally a ‘gun friendly’ school, as long as you toss it out of the car when the police arrive.

  3. TheCOWDOG 07/09/2013 at 5:28 PM #

The difference in vehicles now, and then is chasmous. THEY are no longer in control of the information.

The rentals are front and center this time around, with outside agents doing the “review ” to boot.

    They gottem’.

  4. Pack78 07/09/2013 at 5:35 PM #

National media (even ESPN!) is posting on this story and I have seen posts from Dook, Clemson, KU, and UK folks on TOS regarding the holes…looks like critical mass will finally be achieved.

  5. triadwolf 07/09/2013 at 5:39 PM #

Someone at UNC will just tell all police officers in the State of NC to stop writing tickets to UNC students in rental cars. There will be no more tickets and non-athletes will get the same benefit as athletes so that should satisfy the NCAA. Problem solved.

  6. Gowolves 07/09/2013 at 6:51 PM #

    I can’t wait until Friday!

  7. MrPlywood 07/09/2013 at 7:29 PM #

I only hope that all of the usual suspects washed those rental cars using a university hose. THEN all hell will break loose. The NCAA don’t play when it comes to free car washes.

Let’s thank Old Roy and Hairpin for keeping this summer interesting!

  9. tuckerdorm1983 07/09/2013 at 9:18 PM #

My hope is that P.J. and Leslie get thrown off the team and the NCAA drops the hammer on them. I hope the new AD and Chancellor will have the balls to take action. However, my past experience tells me very little will come of this. Driving rental cars will be an impermissible benefit. They will have to pay some money and be suspended from the team for the first 4 games of the season which are Monmonth, North East Tenn State, Kennesaw State Univeristy and UNC- Mebane. After much penance and a whole bunch of roy saying “I hope they learned their lesson” they will go on to play the rest of the season. If you think any more than that you are looney.

    Great read – entertaining

Gotta show it is more than 3 or 4 players involved, otherwise this is P.J. Hairston and Leslie McDonald issue – not a UNC issue.

Unlike USC and other colleges, NCAA won’t act on UNC unless it sees volume. It is odd but is the behavior.

  11. JohnGalt78 07/09/2013 at 10:52 PM #

God bless all you dreamers on here! Love your spunk. But, in reality, the NCAA will not do ANYTHING to UN-Class.. NEVER EVER EVER. Show me a flying pig and I’ll jump on the bandwagon.

  12. vtpackfan 07/09/2013 at 10:57 PM #

I’ll add that on Leon Parker’s Facebook page he is friends with Mychal Faulcon. Whoops.

good ol’ u*nx – where miscreant rogues perform malfeasance with metronome regularity from the day they arrove…

A PackPride poster has connected Parker’s twitter account to a tag on a picture of several somewhat expensive vehicles parked in Fats’ driveway. I think Henson is also tagged in that picture.

There is also an indication that the rentals were going on long before the incidents at issue lately. It appears USA Today or someone is pulling rental receipts older than the last six months.

This could continue to get more interesting for the Heels (and their wheels).

  16. JohnGalt78 07/10/2013 at 9:31 AM #

Nice try tucker. Obviously a doctored video….real planes dont have that much leg room.

I am glad to see that UNC-CH is finally a ‘gun friendly’ school, as long as you toss it out of the car when the police arrive.”

I hear texting and driving is OK in Chapel Hill too – as long as you look up every several seconds.

  18. wufpup76 07/10/2013 at 10:35 AM #

Who the hell has $15,000 to spend on rental vehicles over a 5 month span?

Moreover, why would you spend $15,000 on rental vehicles from 20 mins. down the road? … Why do I get the feeling that these rentals are written off as ‘business expense’ for the proper and necessary functions of said ‘party planning’ business?

Anyhoo, I digress … Friday’s a couple of days away anyway. Speaking of, we really need Bubba to step up his pr game. He’s not nearly the quote goldmine that Dickie B. was.

Real question: “HOW WILL THIS AFFECT RECRUITING!?”

When this all broke, I read a page or two (there were 48 and it kept growing) of PP. I THINK that the lads there did what I did….so here goes. All this is FACT. I sent it to a UNC bud with the references, so I CAN back it up.

Secretary of State site has Haydn Thomas listed many times. He is (CBS Sports Article) a Cousin of Dr. Spencer Howard. Dr. Howard is a Durham DDS and also an Adjunct Dental Professor at UNC. They have an “exotic” transportation company as one of their enterprises.

If you follow the links and keep searching, you will find that Dr. Howard has some OTHER ventures.

Ice Holdings is one of them. The owner/participants listed are Haydn Thomas and Lee Gause. If you go to Milani Milak’s website, she has a page for a “breast cancer pink” mouth guard and she says to contact Dr. Lee in Manhattan. If you go to the name of the practice, Dr. Lee is actually Dr. Lee Gause. So, we know that Dr. Lee Gause seems connected…..BUT, the “KEY” is if you do a WHOIS and find the contact for Iceberg Guards. BINGO, Dr. Lee Gause.

Therefore, it DOES seem plausible that Ice Holdings, a NC registered corp is the entity that owns Iceberg Guards (and there is also another website, but it pulls you over to iceberg).

Notice all the UNC folks on the Icebergguard.com site. All the lads at PP had tweets and photos of the various players partying with Haydn and sporting their guards. Look at the pricing. Only the government would pay more for a piece of plastic.

Finally, do a Bio on Dr. Howard and Dr. Gause. HMMMM…they have some commonality. Wonder if they talk or text daily?

Now, this may be a reach, but WHERE did Tami Hansbrough (sp?) mom find her cushy little “do nothing; get paid a lot; free travel with BF” job? Why the Dental School Foundation. Coincidence or Conspiracy? Don’t know, but it SURE has a smell.

So, I am convinced that MY $$ trail has some UNC folks in the bushes and they have DDS’s after their names. What OTHER stuff is out there? I don’t know.

BUT, I wonder, these two gents obviously have the mental capacity to become dentists. UNC Dental school, is (or was) a tough place to get into back in the 70’s. I considered going back and it would have been too expensive and I would have had to forged my GPA or pulled several stings to get in. SO, I have a lot of respect for the UNC Dental School’s acceptance standards (or at least 40 years ago).

But, you also GOTTA wonder WHY two professionals would pair up with a convicted felon in a “legal” entity…

And you gotta wonder WHY this same felon spent the bread he did for the cars….maybe his reputation as a “quality” supplier is enhanced by getting recommendations from the UNC athletes….

    I don’t know..

BUT, I will say that UNC has certainly outdone themselves. I thought they were ahead of the curve with their “Sweet Carolines” escort services in the 80s where there was a covey of young ladies vying to be partners with the UNC athletes as keeping the young lad’s sexual frustrations under control was a “contractural” requirement when they signed their LOI.

Ms. Carol Folt certainly has a challenge. If I were her, I would put Dr. Larry Monteith on retainer and elevate him to “Chief Witch Hunter – UNC Campus”. Then he could ferret out the missdoers that were bringing shame and disgrace to the sacred campus…. Saint Monteith would bring a NEW dimension or level to UNC athletics….previously unheard of….

    LOVE IT….LOVE IT….LOVE IT…..

Just wanted to say how pleased I am that at least two of the commentariate got and appreciated the Dead Milkmen reference. It restores a little faith in humanity, and reinforces why I like our quirky little group so damned much.

Oh yeah, and the Holes suck out loud. I want a U*NC license plate.

  21. Pack78 07/10/2013 at 12:05 PM #

^License plate? U*NC Compliance Department should be able to arrange that…

  22. gannon 07/10/2013 at 12:24 PM #

Instead of card board cutouts of faces, can we please organize nothing but card board cutouts of cars for the next UNC home game? Maybe one of Fatz for good measure?

  23. bill.onthebeach 07/10/2013 at 1:16 PM #

    ^this …. begs the obvious question….

Wonder what the Coach Rat and the Cameron Crazies come up with next ???

Ya’ll know they hate the Holes worse than we do…..

  24. Gowolves 07/10/2013 at 1:33 PM #

Bill, I don’t think that is possible. I dislike them pretty bad!

  25. lawful 07/10/2013 at 3:21 PM #

BJD, I would like you to have your faith restored in me as well. So, if I happen to run you over, please don’t leave a scratch.
