Pack9 Looks to Close Out Owls, Head to Omaha – Game Two Thread

blockSbaseball

In a game that looked like hopes were dimming (to put it mildly), Wolfpack Baseball was able to scratch out two runs in the bottom of the 9th Saturday to pull out a come from behind victory.  The game winner was of course courtesy of one Mr. Jake Fincher, who pulled the ball hard into left field for the winning RBI single to give the Pack the 4-3 walk off victory.

Hopefully the rest of the team didn’t hurt Jakie too badly as they chased him down post-game.

Of course, none of that matters if Logan Ratledge doesn’t drop a beauty of a bunt, squeezing Brett Williams from third to tie the game at three in the first place.

Check out the highlights below, but beware of Paul LoDuca’s eyebrows…don’t look directly at them….

A shaky Carlos Rodon (which is still better than 95% of the rest of the pitchers out there) kept the Pack close enough but took a no decision.  Josh Easley took the victory (7-2).

Box Score

Saturday’s win put the Wolfpack (48-14) one win away from someplace they haven’t been in 45 years.  Omaha.  Win one of the next two and close out the Owls, and that drought will be broken.

Game Two between the Pack and the Owls gets going at 4pm on Sunday on ESPNU and ESPN3.

Nitpicky details: Pack will be the road team for Sunday’s game.

Tickets Punched

Should the Pack win one of the next two and get to Omaha, two of the teams which would be in their bracket already punched their tickets Saturday night.

UCLA topped CS Fullerton to complete a 2-0 sweep of the Titans on the road and will thus claim the #5 seed slot in Omaha.

Their first round opponent will be the #4 seeded Tigers from LSU, who dispatched Oklahoma in impressive fashion in Baton Rouge to dump the Sooners, 2-0.

Elsewhere Sunday

North vs South – Chapel Hill Game Two – 1pm, ESPN (Heels lead ‘Cocks 1-0)

FSU vs Indiana – Tallahassee Game Two – 1pm, ESPNU (Hoosiers lead ‘Noles 1-0)

Vandy vs ‘Ville – Nashville Game Two – 4pm, ESPN (Cards lead ‘Dores 1-0)

UVa vs Miss.St. – Charlottesville Game Two – 7pm, ESPN2 (Bulldogs lead ‘Hoos 1-0)

Oregon St vs K State – Corvallis Game Two – 10pm, ESPNU (Cats lead Beavers 1-0)

So, use this thread to talk it up on Sunday…really loving the chatter.

We’ll do the same as usual with updates and probably pseudo play x play in the comments.

Let’s Go Pack!!! Close it out TODAY!!!

  10. Wufpacker 06/09/2013 at 4:23 PM #

Jernigan on the hill for the Pack.

  11. Wufpacker 06/09/2013 at 4:24 PM #

    1-0 Rice, end of 1.

  12. packpowerfan 06/09/2013 at 4:24 PM #

Small zone today. Jernigan is going to have to lock it down and not hang any more fastballs.

Rice second bagger has been murdering the ball.

Chopper up the middle gives Grant Clyde a leadoff single….

Brett Williams singles thru the left side, Pack with two on none away…

    Wayne Graham needs a hoverround…just saying….

  16. Wufpacker 06/09/2013 at 4:34 PM #

Sac bunt attempt but Clyde forced at 3rd on the FC…two on one away now….

Brett Williams steals third but overslides the bag, tagged out….two away…man on 2nd….

  17. BJD95 06/09/2013 at 4:36 PM #

Good hitter in front of two poor hitters. Slow dude on 2nd….and we freaking bunt again. Then run into a second out. Way to let a shaky pitcher off the ropes FFS.

  18. Wufpacker 06/09/2013 at 4:36 PM #

FSU done…IU to Omaha. DJ Stewart with a weak fly ball to end it so DBP is smiling probably.

    11-6 final.

  19. Wufpacker 06/09/2013 at 4:37 PM #

Two out walk to Armstrong, two on two away…

Ratledge flies out to end it, Pack strands two.

    Still 1-0 middle 2nd.

  20. Gowolves 06/09/2013 at 4:38 PM #

I don’t get the sac bunt call. Early in the game. No outs. Got two on. The guy is struggling with control. Go after him! Get a big inning. They are close to screwing themselves out of a good inning.

  21. Gowolves 06/09/2013 at 4:39 PM #

They should have scored at least one run there.

  22. BJD95 06/09/2013 at 4:40 PM #

I’m not opposed to bunting in the correct situation (though as a saberist, I do think it’s done too much), but that was the dumbest situation ever.

  23. TheAliasTroll 06/09/2013 at 4:41 PM #

Giving away outs in the 2nd, wished we wouldn’t have fiddled when we had the pitcher on the ropes.

  24. Wufpacker 06/09/2013 at 4:42 PM #

Rice gets the leadoff man Byrd aboard via HBP…

Confession – I didn’t care at all for “Bull Durham.”
