Pack/Holes Semi-Live Blog

I can’t commit to a full one, because I am sick, and also sick of being sick. So grumpier and more brain-dead than usual, which are two very sad things. So keep things going strong in the comments.

Simply put…tonight is a must win. We absolutely cannot lose tonight after the embarrassing loss to a pitiful Wake Forest team. Not at home, not when the Holes are mediocre and unranked, not when we host ESPN Gameday, not when the Holes have a 13-game win streak against us.

Let’s hope we not only win this one, but also win it with style. I could use a relaxing Saturday night. I bet MG feels the same way.

6:55 – Lots of ink has been spilled – and rightly so – about this Hole squad not measuring up to their usual standard of performance. But as the tunnel camera showed…fruity dance routines are in peak form.

7:01 – I learned a neat tip during last week’s Butler/Gonzaga tilt – if you set the volume level JUST right…you can just make out Shulman’s commentary but not that of the high-pitched Vitale. You’re welcome, America.

7:06 – CJL is aggressive early. Good.

7:09 – Haha. McAdoo sucks.

7:14 – Only some really good defense (yeah, who expected THAT?) is keeping the Holes from being run out of the gym completely. State has energy on both ends of the court, and Howell is a beast (even by his own beastly standards) on the glass. JUST SUSTAIN, damn it. And no matter how sick, I still adore the DirecTV Genie. She’s way to good to be banging Derek Jeter. Life is so unfair.

7:18 – Great officiating as well. Just perfect.

7:21 – Vandy sighting! 22-10. And it really would be 30+ if the Holes weren’t playing pretty solid interior defense.

7:23 – Nobody watching basketball gives half a shit about the X games.

7:25 – You could see that 3 second call coming a mile away.

7:27 – Love Zo’s intensity, but he may need to rein it in just a little. Will there be a Wee Baby Seamus sighting?

7:29 – Grudging credit where it’s due – they have showed poise weathering the initial flurry and staying in the game. Lead down to 6, offensive flow is ebbing.

7:31 – Shitty call #1, charge against CJL.

7:35 – Leslie’s revenge. A posterizing dunk. And one!!

7:38 – Wanna see a demoralizing run? How does 12-2 sound? 34-20 Pack at the last media break, and Zo will be on the line for two. Very important to keep the momentum going into the half.

7:43 – See Pack run. See Pack run. /endless loop (run up to 20-2).

7:46 – Such a heartbreaking week for Vitale. First he calls the Miami bombardment of Duke, now this. LMFAO

Halftime – NC State 45, Holes 26. Love it.

8:09 – That could be a HUGE turned ankle. Sluggish start, too.

8:11 – Neither team has scored…but I wish MG would call timeout.

8:13 – You simply can’t build a team around a player who is both lazy and stupid (McAdoo). Roy putting in some blue teamers.

8:15 – Really sloppy 4 minutes for the Pack, even though the lead is up to 20. MG is right to be annoyed.

8:21 – It’s remarkable how fluid our big men are. Just poetry to watch.

8:23 – Bullock has really embarrassed himself tonight. And it takes something to stand out like that when your team’s down 24.

8:25 – Good to get RP back out there – but the question is if/how badly he will favor the ankle in the next few days.

8:26 – WBS in in!!

8:29 – Smart time to get Zo a breather.

8:33 – VERY sloppy, if not for Buckets the Holes would really be back in this game. Still can cut it to 15 with these FTs. Me no likey.

8:38 – Down to ELEVEN. From 28. Every Hole shot is wide f-cking open.

8:40 – I am ready to murder someone. This is beyond irritating.

8:42 – Single digits.

8:43 – Finally, we get a couple of baskets. But the Holes are still wide open, every possession. Pathetic.

8:44 – Four point play from Woo should put this one to bed. But wow, what a lousy interval of basketball. Just can’t let up like that. Ever.

8:46 – If you want a silver lining for this second half malaise, this does provide a “teachable moment” and hopefully will keep us from being overconfident for our next game.

8:51 – Better on offense now…but broken record on D. Every Hole shot is virtually uncontested. Anybody can score if you don’t guard them. Even Wake (as we learned Tuesday).

8:54 – Just like that, it’s back down to 11. Ol’ Roy will make these guys finish the game, and there’s time for things to get annoyingly close again. Perhaps this is the worst part of having a short bench – can’t mass substitute to send a message.

8:56 – We simply can’t maintain the slightest bit of focus, since about the 11-minute mark. 85-75 with 1:11 left.

8:57 – Horrid, unforced turnover.

8:58 – Open three, and it’s down to SEVEN.

9:00 – Lots of one-and-ones to come.

9:01 – Warren bricks the first, and a follow-up dunk makes it FIVE.

9:02 – Here comes Woo. Makes two.

9:04 – Another wide open three, but the Holes miss. We will hang on, despite two long periods of brain dead, intensity free ball. Certainly takes some of the shine off the first 29 minutes of excellence.

Finally, your final score – NC State 91, Holes 83.

“I’m not into this ‘pansy’ kinda crap … We STUNK.”

    – Roy Williams

Hahaha … Gotta give him credit – he doesn’t pull any punches.

Roy Boy: That was a butt kicking. Could not have said it better.

  3. tractor57 01/26/2013 at 9:10 PM #

And also showed what can happen when the focus is lost for whatever reason. Short bench, fast paced game and some inattention in the second half made things much more interesting than they should have been. I think Old13 is spot on with his concern over the short bench but this year there really is no other option. As Gott builds depth with recruiting he will have to adjust his rotation.

Once again this team showed what they can do but also showed some weaknesses. Maybe those weaknesses are related to fatigue or maybe not. I think in most cases they are not since in other games they have started very slowly.

Roy Williams stinks. My nephew who went to a UNC basketball camp years ago remarked that Dean reaked of stale smoke and fish. It’s the Carolina Way!

I honestly think if Painter hadn’t transferred we’d be 7-0 in ACC play. And we would have won by at least 15 tonight, maybe 20. To the posters who take the “young men don’t get tired” attitude, remember how much of our game is predicated on out-running the other team. We did that relentlessly for the first half. That has to catch up with these guys after awhile, and they rested on defense late, which is why Carolina got back in the game.

Great win. It would have been nice to blow them out by 30 (or 34 to top FSU’s demolition last year), but I’ll take the win by 8. The streak is over.

Oh, and Dexter Strickland can go F*ck himself. He sucks anyway. He’s the last guy on that bench that should be talking.

  6. wolffpride 01/26/2013 at 9:25 PM #

The conversation going on over on ESPN is great. Carolina fans seem to really hate Strickland. I wonder why?

  7. freshmanin83 01/26/2013 at 9:25 PM #

Glad for the win. I hoped it helped them learn they have to push through and be disciplined even when tired even after a half of superior play you cant let up.

  8. wolfpackdawg 01/26/2013 at 9:29 PM #

Great win. Still 1-13 against them.

  9. Avid109 01/26/2013 at 9:33 PM #

Happy with the win, but not happy with the premature celebration when they went up by 20+ points. I do think that the team could have gotten a few more minutes from the bench to give the starters a bit more of a break. That said, I think most of the problem was that they took their foot off of the accelerator when they thought they had the game wrapped up. You can’t do that against good teams.

Alright, great win. Painter is gone and happily jacking up shots for a team that might not win 5 games all year. Great Win. What there is there to say. NCAA team within striking distance as a #1 of ACC-a team doing things the student body hasn’t seen in two decades plus-c’mon let’s rally here ( no matter if your a 57 or a 61).

  11. primacyone 01/26/2013 at 9:42 PM #

    Great game.

  12. dallas-pack 01/26/2013 at 9:48 PM #

Great game – love beating the holes. Way too many Walmart Heel fans out here in DFW. I need to “run into” J. Randle out here and ask about his trip – lobby for my Pack.

  13. WV Wolf 01/26/2013 at 10:01 PM #

Thought the boys spend a lot of energy building that big lead and you could tell they were on fumes down the stretch. Glad they had enough left in the tank to hold on.

  14. ldr of the pk 75 01/26/2013 at 10:03 PM #

Great game, but we have to learn how to put people away, close the deal. From about the 7 or 8 minute mark, we became very sloppy on inbounding the ball and passing off the inbound.

But, we’re still young, we haven’t beaten the Heels in years, and with the smack talking going into the game, we probably found it easy to gloat when up by 28. We’ll learn.

Glad the students didn’t storm the court, even as much as they might have wanted. We’re ranked, they’re not, and we’re ahead of them in the conference, so no real reason to.
Not impressed with the unis. Looked like some sweat suit issued at PE in the Gym. Names were impossible to read, At least on TV.

All in all a good day though.

  15. MrPlywood 01/26/2013 at 10:09 PM #

TJ scored 19… he is stealth.

  16. WV Wolf 01/26/2013 at 10:18 PM #

I agree, it really is pretty impressive game after game how we rarely run any halfcourt sets to get Warren a shot and you look up at the scoreboard and somehow he has 19 points.

  17. eas 01/26/2013 at 10:28 PM #

Any win over the Holes makes for a great day/night. We have to utilize more bench time to rest our main rotation down the stretch. They were exhausted and took the foot off the gas for 10 minutes off play. Then to have nearly completely loose a 28 point lead is just awful. We played 30 minutes of balls to wall effort. We have to figure out a way to hold a lead or we are going to have a tough season/tourney.

Regardless I am nothing but happy with a good win! Great job Pack and keep improving! We are still night and day better than we were 2.5 years ago. For that matter better than we have been since V was pushed out. This was a good night for recruiting as well!

  18. coach13 01/26/2013 at 10:34 PM #

As hard as we run/ran the first half, maybe some type of 45 minute energy bar is needed for our guys at half time since we mostly only play 6.

  19. Wufpacker 01/26/2013 at 10:57 PM #

Maybe that 5 Hour Energy crap would like to become a sponsor.

  20. JohnGalt78 01/26/2013 at 10:59 PM #

PNC was rocking! GREAT win! 1 and 0 now against the Cheaters

  21. WolftownVA81 01/26/2013 at 11:01 PM #

Great win even if a little sloppy down the stretch. I liked the new uniforms but agree the names were hard to read – but perhaps that was the point. We need more team and less individual. It appears the team meeting may have helped.

  22. JohnGalt78 01/26/2013 at 11:11 PM #

think maybe Roy should bench Strickland and play the manager…what’s his name, Tokoto? his line was much better than our punk Strickland.

  23. JohnGalt78 01/26/2013 at 11:18 PM #

Hey Dexter, I know you are reading this. You looked really sad after being called for the foul on Wood as he drained a 3 over your head. A rare 4 point play….priceless as that was…..your sad face was even more so. Thanks for everything you do for us punk.

  24. Alpha Wolf 01/26/2013 at 11:38 PM #

I’ve seen a Carolina fan saying that we showed Julius Randle on the Jumbotron…did that happen? Or was it that ESPN showed the kid, and he thought it was on the scoreboard?

  25. fullmoon1 01/27/2013 at 1:38 AM #

I think the names on the u I’d were supposed to be obscured. I suppose it adds to the team mentality. I thought they looked pretty sharp, almost totally red save for the white outlines.
