Pack/Holes Semi-Live Blog

I can’t commit to a full one, because I am sick, and also sick of being sick. So grumpier and more brain-dead than usual, which are two very sad things. So keep things going strong in the comments.

Simply put…tonight is a must win. We absolutely cannot lose tonight after the embarrassing loss to a pitiful Wake Forest team. Not at home, not when the Holes are mediocre and unranked, not when we host ESPN Gameday, not when the Holes have a 13-game win streak against us.

Let’s hope we not only win this one, but also win it with style. I could use a relaxing Saturday night. I bet MG feels the same way.

6:55 – Lots of ink has been spilled – and rightly so – about this Hole squad not measuring up to their usual standard of performance. But as the tunnel camera showed…fruity dance routines are in peak form.

7:01 – I learned a neat tip during last week’s Butler/Gonzaga tilt – if you set the volume level JUST right…you can just make out Shulman’s commentary but not that of the high-pitched Vitale. You’re welcome, America.

7:06 – CJL is aggressive early. Good.

7:09 – Haha. McAdoo sucks.

7:14 – Only some really good defense (yeah, who expected THAT?) is keeping the Holes from being run out of the gym completely. State has energy on both ends of the court, and Howell is a beast (even by his own beastly standards) on the glass. JUST SUSTAIN, damn it. And no matter how sick, I still adore the DirecTV Genie. She’s way to good to be banging Derek Jeter. Life is so unfair.

7:18 – Great officiating as well. Just perfect.

7:21 – Vandy sighting! 22-10. And it really would be 30+ if the Holes weren’t playing pretty solid interior defense.

7:23 – Nobody watching basketball gives half a shit about the X games.

7:25 – You could see that 3 second call coming a mile away.

7:27 – Love Zo’s intensity, but he may need to rein it in just a little. Will there be a Wee Baby Seamus sighting?

7:29 – Grudging credit where it’s due – they have showed poise weathering the initial flurry and staying in the game. Lead down to 6, offensive flow is ebbing.

7:31 – Shitty call #1, charge against CJL.

7:35 – Leslie’s revenge. A posterizing dunk. And one!!

7:38 – Wanna see a demoralizing run? How does 12-2 sound? 34-20 Pack at the last media break, and Zo will be on the line for two. Very important to keep the momentum going into the half.

7:43 – See Pack run. See Pack run. /endless loop (run up to 20-2).

7:46 – Such a heartbreaking week for Vitale. First he calls the Miami bombardment of Duke, now this. LMFAO

Halftime – NC State 45, Holes 26. Love it.

8:09 – That could be a HUGE turned ankle. Sluggish start, too.

8:11 – Neither team has scored…but I wish MG would call timeout.

8:13 – You simply can’t build a team around a player who is both lazy and stupid (McAdoo). Roy putting in some blue teamers.

8:15 – Really sloppy 4 minutes for the Pack, even though the lead is up to 20. MG is right to be annoyed.

8:21 – It’s remarkable how fluid our big men are. Just poetry to watch.

8:23 – Bullock has really embarrassed himself tonight. And it takes something to stand out like that when your team’s down 24.

8:25 – Good to get RP back out there – but the question is if/how badly he will favor the ankle in the next few days.

8:26 – WBS in in!!

8:29 – Smart time to get Zo a breather.

8:33 – VERY sloppy, if not for Buckets the Holes would really be back in this game. Still can cut it to 15 with these FTs. Me no likey.

8:38 – Down to ELEVEN. From 28. Every Hole shot is wide f-cking open.

8:40 – I am ready to murder someone. This is beyond irritating.

8:42 – Single digits.

8:43 – Finally, we get a couple of baskets. But the Holes are still wide open, every possession. Pathetic.

8:44 – Four point play from Woo should put this one to bed. But wow, what a lousy interval of basketball. Just can’t let up like that. Ever.

8:46 – If you want a silver lining for this second half malaise, this does provide a “teachable moment” and hopefully will keep us from being overconfident for our next game.

8:51 – Better on offense now…but broken record on D. Every Hole shot is virtually uncontested. Anybody can score if you don’t guard them. Even Wake (as we learned Tuesday).

8:54 – Just like that, it’s back down to 11. Ol’ Roy will make these guys finish the game, and there’s time for things to get annoyingly close again. Perhaps this is the worst part of having a short bench – can’t mass substitute to send a message.

8:56 – We simply can’t maintain the slightest bit of focus, since about the 11-minute mark. 85-75 with 1:11 left.

8:57 – Horrid, unforced turnover.

8:58 – Open three, and it’s down to SEVEN.

9:00 – Lots of one-and-ones to come.

9:01 – Warren bricks the first, and a follow-up dunk makes it FIVE.

9:02 – Here comes Woo. Makes two.

9:04 – Another wide open three, but the Holes miss. We will hang on, despite two long periods of brain dead, intensity free ball. Certainly takes some of the shine off the first 29 minutes of excellence.

Finally, your final score – NC State 91, Holes 83.

geez, these guys were about to kill me with their play the last 10-11 minutes but Great win! it should have never been this close though.

  2. Wufpacker 01/26/2013 at 8:37 PM #

Nice win. Held serve at home.

Now go get the next two please.

But party in Raleigh tonight. 😀

  3. wufpup76 01/26/2013 at 8:37 PM #

Thank God! No need to be negative, I’m sure they’re embarrassed by the last 11 minutes … And in all fairness, we expended a huge amount of energy in the first 30 minutes.

  4. WeAreCured 01/26/2013 at 8:37 PM #

About time, boys! Thank you so much!

  5. St8Fan 01/26/2013 at 8:37 PM #

Now, let’s not get to high…take care of business!!!

  6. MrPlywood 01/26/2013 at 8:38 PM #

We clearly need another body or two. Fatigue surely played a part in that.

  7. highstick 01/26/2013 at 8:40 PM #

Fatigue? These are young athletes! No excuse. They tried to turn this into a “slamma jamma” and almost got bit in the buttocks!

Need to focus and not “bofus”!

  8. MrPlywood 01/26/2013 at 8:42 PM #

    Haha – fair enough ‘stick.

  9. bill.onthebeach 01/26/2013 at 8:42 PM #

    ^mental fatigue Mr. Stick…

  10. Alpha Wolf 01/26/2013 at 8:44 PM #

Yeah, fatigue happens when young athletes are playing other young athletes whose team affords them more in-game rest.

But this is a helluva good win, and it is a great day to be a Wolfpacker. Monday morning at work is going to be sue-weet!

  11. Wufpacker 01/26/2013 at 8:45 PM #

Well, they certainly mentally fatigued me in that last 10ish minutes, that’s for sure.

  12. ILPackfan 01/26/2013 at 8:46 PM #

Way to hang in there, Pack. Despite making the last six minutes interesting, this was a great win.

  13. wolffpride 01/26/2013 at 8:46 PM #

When we hungry, we eat!!! We have done well on the big stage so far this year. I hope we can continue this!

  14. Pack Mentality 01/26/2013 at 8:51 PM #

Nice win Pack. The better team won. Even though we gave up the major lead, the outcome of the game was never in question starting about midway through the first half.

When Leslie one handed dunked it over that that weak white b*** and then stared him down the game was over.

Even though I wish we had won by 50, compiling a lead of 28 points in the 2nd half gives you the luxury of playing like crap for a long stretch with NO CHANCE that you might lose. This game wasn’t close.

GREAT win”! Always love beating the Cheaters – especially when beating Duke, too!

This, however, and the WF game to me make a very strong case against Gott’s seven-man rotation. It does not provide enough margin for foul problems and, especially, fatigue, which we saw tonight. At least an eight-man, and preferably a nine-man rotation is necessary. As demanding as the ACC is, the bigger rotation is almost a necessity to combat the affects of the grind. And the non-starters need to be able to contribute at least 10-12 minutes of quality playing time.

The live blog works. Thanks for taking one for the team BJD.

  17. Wulfpack 01/26/2013 at 8:56 PM #

We played well. I am very happy with the win. We have to find a way to tighten it up with a lead. UNC is not a good team.

  18. JeremyH 01/26/2013 at 8:58 PM #

I agree old13. If you’re up by mid-twenties then you can afford to play Lewis and Vandenberg longer, but we didn’t. And we have a short turnaround for an upcoming away game. We’ve seen this pattern before.

  19. vtpackfan 01/26/2013 at 8:58 PM #

Sick win you guys. That was an up and down frenetic pace game the masses want. We came out victorious and this one is going to matter BIG to the Wolfpack faithful.

This is a team with a destiny. People lose sight of that, but the players and coaches in the PNC home locker are full aware.

  20. Wolf74 01/26/2013 at 8:58 PM #

Great win. What makes it even better is it was against one of the biggest cheaters in college athletics the last 30 years or more. Go Pack!

  21. TheCOWDOG 01/26/2013 at 8:59 PM #

Oh yeah, they got fatigued alright. Fatigued of jackin’ up stat shots.

Man, if you didn’t see that…

Hey wonderful runs that killed UNx , but damned if they didn’t get caught up in …whatever. Purvis has a very long way to go.

  22. choppack1 01/26/2013 at 9:02 PM #

Lorenzo brown showed just how good he can be when focused…this team showed what they can do when they d up.

  23. wufpup76 01/26/2013 at 9:04 PM #

Haha Lorenzo just admitted to being tired down the stretch …

“I’m not gonna lie – I was tired!”

Certainly doesn’t excuse those last 11 minutes, but wow – they really played close to 30 minutes of all-out high level basketball … That is tiring for sure.

  24. wpakgirl 01/26/2013 at 9:04 PM #

Howling! Great win at PNC. AWESOME!

  25. vtpackfan 01/26/2013 at 9:08 PM #

Totally disagree with folks who want to see more from the bench. There are so many TV timeouts that it is inexcusable to take your core players out unless you are a Shaka Un. Smart team that presses for 40 minutes.

We thew some errant passes when UNC went zone three quarter press. We tried to take the fabulous full court break instead of the steady, get it past the the ten second line. Credit Williams and cred to some nice play by the Cheats in the second half, but don’t kid yourself into thinking bench play factored into it

UNC never tied the game after 0-0. Wrap your head around that.
