Big Four Rivals UNC Scandal

The easiest way to view the schol situation is they are not allowed to carry more than 80 of them over the period of 3 years.

They may start this fall and run kids off, or defer until 2013 .

I don’t know why I allowed myself to entertain the thought that the NCAA would actually come down hard enough to deter any school from doing the same thing in the future. I left a little compartment in my brain reserved for disappointment and am using it now. 9 major violations. 1 year ban. From a Music City/Car Care-level bowel game. Wow. They still get their share of the ACC’s bowl revenue next year, right? Some punishment.

Can someone explain how a 3 year show cause on Blake punishes UNC?

5 schollys a year? OK, awesome. So, they won’t give out a few token schollys to super-wealthy boosters for their unathletic kid to never see the field of play for 3 years.

Want to send a meassage? 2 year ban, 1 year TV ban, 30 schollys. Now THAT might get someone’s attention.

All I hope is that the academic fraud stuff ends (the 400-level Swahili bullshit). That will actually GREATLY harm their recruiting, because if they aren’t basically garunteed a degree, why the hell go there?

    We can hope….

  3. AirWolf 03/12/2012 at 8:33 PM #

One thing is certain. UNC will not be able to continue to recruit the quality of athlete that Butch/Blake brought in. With a three year probation, a continued influx of B/B quality thugs will ensure a repeat violation of social media regs, parties, and assorted other no-nos.

That would be a problem for the Carolina Way. The NCAA would not be happy to see them again and vice versa.

It should be our job to monitor and listen for them to screw up again. 🙂

I know most will never look it up (if even possible) but literally the “Valvano era” was punished by ‘self/ncaa/acc’ for kids selling their free shoes and sideline tix for some spending cash. 20 plus yrs of hell (EVEN a nasty book written against us) for nothing really.

Holes were accused today and they just NOW plead guilty of (by not appealing) committing ACADEMIC fraud!…THE worst! NO?? And nothing of consequence? No bowl for next year’s 6-6 team. Really?

What is the worst thing an academic institution can do but allow cheating in class? Give free Tatoos? Shoes? Cheat to get Reggie Bush? Or give fake grades to kids in fake classes to keep them on the field?

I’m not even sure who could possibly wear Charles Shackleford’s shoes! But does it matter?

Remember the “48 Hours” show? Yes, I know you experts here remember, but they did a whole show on the State-Duke game. Somewhere along way they ACTUALLY showed Laettner et al STUDYING in the locker room as I recall! MY A$$$!

Back then WE kiddo fans were so pumped we saw ourselves on the front row of the game highlights we didn’t even think about it. I was one of the six idiots behind the announcers on tv that night….I missed the point at that time as a 19 year old idiot fan but THIS $hit now goes way back for me now dudes. 2 team league…even back in the 80’s it turns out…

I remember our guys were shown “giggling” about ‘going’ to class. Nice! Name of book is “Personal Fouls” if u ever wanna read how TERRIBLE we were. Valvano was first guy to EVER (that I heard loud and clear) say “just win”…because that was his instruction from his bosses. Just like EVERY coach is told of course.

Every coach including the “Dean” recruited and would have accepted the beast Chris Washburn. NOW we know it woulda been very easy for him to pass classes in Chapel Hell apparently.

Ready to move on just like all of you are…but this nonsense does go WAY back….Go Pack…Beat SDSU.

PS….To those who are SURE the “48 Hours” episode included the “amphibious” comment….YOU are wrong. It did not happen…

What was in the Yow letter and why was it taken down?

    +1 AirWolf.
“It should be our job to monitor and listen for them to screw up again.”

and we should be aware of others doing the same regarding us.

One spring in chapel hill with all that leg strutting around over there means football talent anytime.

You guys are such a bunch of losers and haters.

Life is too short to waste on those dolts. Look at me, I’m spending my time building a replica of Sadlacks out of toothpicks.

  9. tuckerdorm1983 03/12/2012 at 9:27 PM #

in the eighties every time I went in Sadlacks some fellow was always trying to sell me a dime bag of weed. That happen to anyone else? That fellow still around?

  10. vtpackfan 03/12/2012 at 9:34 PM #

    Thinking McCallum is that guy.

  11. Hungwolf 03/12/2012 at 9:38 PM #

Due to the bowl ban seniors are allowed to transfer with no penalty of having to sit out. Does anyone know if they allowed to transfer in conference? I would think so, but I bet Swofford will try and stop it. Maybe a few players like to come play linebacker for State and go to a bowl game this year?

Was talking to 2 friends that are tar heels and one of them stated UNC got hammered, other said they were not hammered like USC. Then they both agreed only cause UNC got nothing to take away like USC had. What do you take from an average football program? Both stated the bball program go down to if ever investigated, the bball players kings on that campus: don’t go to class, wear expensive clothes, drive expensive cars, see them at all the nice eating places, etc.

  12. redcanine 03/12/2012 at 9:46 PM #

WTF is that guy (McCallum) talking about?

The UNX football players like to go to strip bars in Miami. They could care less about the chicks on campus. Plus, the co-eds there can usually read and write. Way out of the football player’s league.

  13. Sweet jumper 03/12/2012 at 9:53 PM #

I saw Swoffia’s vanilla pudding statement on WRAL earlier this evening. I am waiting for Clemson and FSU to demand the conference add “extra” sanctions like the ACC did to them several years ago.

  14. turfpack 03/12/2012 at 10:30 PM #

Swoffart….said everythings over, move along you weaklings.
The lost of 5 schollys will hurt more than most people think. It really hurt your depth, but maybe more in practice with the good lack of players to practice against.

I was hoping for a 2 year ban – but this isn’t the proverbial wrist-slap.

If you look at it this way – UConn had similar infractions and didn’t get a post-season ban.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions here – the 216 records, the parking tickets and various license plates and the allegations claimed by the DL who signed with UT.

In other words – I don’t think a lot of stones were overturned. I do think that UNC sat a lot of guys out – and they were aggressive doing so. However, they continued and even in the bowl game – continue to take a very light approach to illegal benefits and that fine line high-profile athletes walk between the minor free stuff any big-name athlete would get at any school and the Reggie Bush treatment.

Simply put, I believe UNC-Ch will be back in a bowl game in the 2013 season. Institutions/”leaders” of this pathetic state have proven that THEY ARE NOT MEN/WOMEN OF INTEGRITY. You will not see similar academic and recruiting restrictions placed on UNC-Ch by the UNC Board of Governors.(even though, contrary to what happened at NC State, academics were very much a part of this scandal.)

William Friday and Erskine Bowles – you have proven yourselves no to be no better than copper-stealing meth-heads (those are your peers). Remember, it’s easy to be a “man of integrity” when you are making a conscious decision to damage an individual or institution you care nothing about. The mark of a man of integrity is when he treats those that he loves the same as those he does not love – or at least has the decency to say, “I cannot be part of this thing, my heart is too close to it.”

Ladies and gentlemen, those are the leaders if the North Carolina Public College institution – and they have no true moral compass. If they did – they would have apologized to NC State a long time ago OR they would have gone after Chapel Hill with the same vigor that they went after NC State.

The biggest penalty is the exposure of the carolina way to be a myth, a fraud, smoke and mirrors, a facade, a house of cards, anything you want to call it. They can be called liars and cheats and it will not be opinion.

As far as I am concerned, anything that the holes have ever won is legitimately suspect now.

It is in black and white now. uncheat!

My main problem is that it seems like UNC should be crippled by what they did. They were not. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if this somehow gets their program going. By the way, how does the loss of scholarships work any way? That keeps being tossed around, but I haven’t completely understood how that works.

  18. wolfonthehill 03/13/2012 at 5:34 AM #

The most laughable part is the NCAA talking about the high level of cooperation from unc-ch, and unc-ch talking about the high level of cooperation from BFMD. If they say it enough, some folks start believing it…

  19. MattN 03/13/2012 at 6:37 AM #

None of those penalties will serve as a determent to other schools. Good job NCAA.

The only thing I really hope happens is the academic bull$#!t. No more As in 400-level Swahili classes for functionally illiterate people (Austin). THAT will hurt their recruiting because they can no longer garuntee a diploma to the dumbest jock on the planet.

  20. tuckerdorm1983 03/13/2012 at 7:01 AM #

Winning is all that matters. UNC should have know better than to hire Davis. All my UNC friends said “Oh Davis Cleaned up Miami”. One carolina fan and very close friend said very early on in the BMFD tenure that “UNC football has turned into thugs. Hitting out of bounds and unsportsman like penalties is not the carolina way”.

As I watched UNC-State game several years back there was many UNC unsportsman like behavior
“The Slap after we beat them”
“Beat down in the endzone by the Carolina Player after the play ended”
“The constant taunting of the field”
“Greg Little’s punting the ball out of the endzone after scoring a TD”
and BMFD did nothing about it

UNC was in denial just like Kentucky Fans are in denial that Calamari is dirty and if they win the NCAAT they better put the banners up with Velcro.

  21. McCallum 03/13/2012 at 7:11 AM #

    My points are:

    1) Sadlacks actually had some decent sandwiches back in the day. No, I’ve never done drugs much less sell them. In addition, Sadlacks was the only place that sold the Mickey’s Big Mouth back in the day.

    2) unc was never going to “get hammered”. When you have that many influential alumni, when you have that many friends of the university in the press, the media, and in state government and so forth………..then there is no way in hell that you’ll get in trouble. Add to the aforementioned FACTS that the conference commish is one of yours then how could one expect anything to take place?

So thinking they were going to get hammered was less productive than building a replica of Sadlacks out of toothpicks. At least my effort would come to something.

Now it’s more important than ever to blow the whistle on them violating probation. I’m just disappointed the timing of the sanctions doesn’t affect recruiting. I’m hoping they don’t transition to Fedora’s system well, experienced kids get pushed out for scholarships, kids defect to ECU, the donors are unhappy and the Blue Zone donors sue.

  23. vtpackfan 03/13/2012 at 8:10 AM #

I think their reputation took a hammering-NCAA means nothing to me. They print out clearinghouse forms for future athletes and pass out little trophies to winners. People who work for them probably couldnt earn a decent living doing something legit. Kinda like the BoG.

  24. Tau837 03/13/2012 at 1:10 PM #

Read this at N&O: “Scott Kennedy, the national football recruiting analyst for scout.com, said the reduction in scholarships is manageable.

“With a cap of 85 scholarships per year, signing 20 a year won’t have any effect at all,” he said. “UNC will be able to manage those sanctions as if they didn’t even exist.””

COWDOG said above that they would be capped at 80 scholarships per year, which makes sense if the penalty is 15 one year scholarships at 5 per year (as opposed to 15 four year scholarships).

If they can still hold 85 scholarships per year, they can take transfers to make up the difference. What is the point of the punishment then? Maybe it’s not as easy to get quality transfers as quality recruits, but still…

I heard today that Fedora mentioned on David Glenn that they have been contacting Juniors. Oops. Can’t do that.
