They’re back! NCAA officials back in Chapel Hill

They’re back!

Chapelboro.com is reporting that the NCAA is back on campus. We’re going to take a wild guess that they’re not delivering helmet stickers to individuals for outstanding play in the Heels’ triumph over Rutgers.

CHAPEL HILL – WCHL News has heard unconfirmed reports that NCAA investigators are back on campus this week, following up on recent developments surrounding the UNC football team.

Last month, WCHL reported that UNC’s African Studies Department had hired Carl Carey, Jr., as an adjunct professor to teach a course called Foundations of Black Education. Carey had taught the class previously, but the hire raised eyebrows because he’s also an active NFL agent, whose clients include former Tar Heel Julius Peppers.

It’s the gift that keeps on giving, Clark.

If… and certainly that’s a huge speculative “if”… African American Studies is the focus of this new investigation, it’s reasonable to believe that whatever wagons remain will indeed be circled to protect the sacred cow.

I would say HOLD YOUR HORSES. Let’s be SENSIBLE and WAIT for the NCAA to make their own conclusions. After that, it’s completely fair to give judgement. Besides, we’re still WAITING a month and a half for UNC’s meeting with the NCAA.

    HaHa… good image grab, GAWolf.

Here is what is interesting about investigators coming BACK to UNC:

    1) The Notice of Allegations had no mention of LOIC.
    2) Other programs around the country are getting penalized for various infractions in a light-enough manner that UNC, and some NC State fans, feel they will get off easy.
    3) Since there has been no mention of LOIC, but there was mention of UNC’s failure to comply with tips that it failed to enforce NCAA regulations when it was tipped off, many are left not knowing what to expect.
    4) News has broken SINCE THE RELEASE OF THE NOA including some phone information and various academic information.

Since item #4 was AFTER the arrival of the NOA, some people wondered if the NCAA was going to do anything with those ethical violations. It appears that the NCAA isn’t inclined to “go ahead and get over with it so they can move on.” No, it looks like the NCAA is really trying to flush out the monster in Carolina.

Sounds like yet another prong has arrove.

Wonder if they will have the opporutnity to take a look around for the 216 records while they are there.

What was the date the 216 records were going to be released to the media????

Has Greg Barnes popped up on some pro-UNC radio program yet to field softball questions and say that this is no big deal and will all be over by Friday?

Because once that happens we will know for sure that UNC is, once again, “f’ed” eight ways to Sunday.

  6. STLPack01 09/14/2011 at 4:09 PM #

This will all be over by Friday.

Word is that the NCAA folks were last seen walking out of Kenan Stadium with a football. It had some writings in Swahili on it. Those rascals are always up to something fun over there!

Seems from the article like the NCAA is looking into UNC’s monkeyshines regarding their African Studies or whatever department. If so, the NCAA must be thrilled that UNC was still trying to pull that shit during a huge investigation — just shows how out of touch with reality UNC was/is. They really think they were/are doing nothing wrong.

Whatever is going on at UNC today – NCAA? Karaoke contest? – the relevant Sports Info people are conspicuously off the grid.

Seems like the right time for this one … “Were you surprised, Clark”? “Surprised? Eddie, if I woke up tomorrow morning with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn’t be more surprised than I am right now.” Had to flex my movie quote skills for a moment. In all seriousness, I wouldn’t expect this to add to or somehow worsen UNC’s penalty. Although it certainly reeks of the arrogance and ass-headed nature than pervades their fanbase, I think the NCAA has pretty much concluded its investigation and has already passed judgment on the transgressions that have made news. This one looks bad, but it can’t really top what’s already been reported and investigated. Hiring a douchebag to teach a class (even if that douche has ties to former UNC players) just looks like the whole Easley speaking deal to me.

  11. GAWolf 09/14/2011 at 4:28 PM #

Oh, Sacco. That’s just Chapelboro.com’s assumption as to why they might be there. They don’t really address the umpteen other things that have come to light since their last tour of duty on the Hill.

The business with Nyang’oro and Carey seems like the biggest thing that happened since they left. The letter of the rule doesn’t restrict steering athletes into cupcake classes but the spirit of the rules certainly suggest it’s preferential treatment. (Seems I remember something about breaking “the spirit of the rule.”)

If that’s the primary reason they’re back and they get the records for all students in the questioned department’s classes(to compare grades of student-athletes with other students), could this be the piece that implicates other sports in academic scandal? Can the NCAA even request those records? Will they draw the ire of the NCAA if they deny the request, again, for “student privacy” and take it to court? Is it not the job of some other party in the state to investigate academic wrongdoing, not the NCAA? If the NCAA is unwilling to check the classroom, can they publicly request the Board of Trustees, Board of Governors or whoever form a committee to do it?

If indeed it’s an overall look at African American Studies, we need a new picture up top. You’re welcome, kids.

Now let’s go find your sister

  15. SaccoV 09/14/2011 at 4:44 PM #

GAWolf, I would absolutely be THRILLED if an academic department received this type of industrial-strength scrutiny from the NCAA, but I can’t personally recall a time that it has ever happened. Even when Barry Switzer was coaching football at Oklahoma (as some of his players never once found their way to campus four miles from the practice facility). It’s intriguing to say the least, but the NCAA won’t dare dive into the classroom of any of its members. I might be completely wrong, and in some ways, I hope this becomes a huge national prong. I just don’t see it happening.

JasonP, “You see the plate runs right underneath my part, here, see? And if this gets dented, my hair just ain’t gonna look right.”

Can we refer to unx’ October date with the NCAA COI as FRYday?

  17. cWOhLFrPAiCKs 09/14/2011 at 5:00 PM #

Well I remember wondering if the NCAA would look into anything that was going on since their last visit or if that was all information they already had and UNX was just trying to keep it from seeing the public spotlight. Now I have my answer. No matter what they are doing on campus this time around, it can’t be good for UNX. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for this information to leak.

Let’s hope they are investigating the African Studies class to see how many basketball players have taken it in the last decade or so…..hope Roy’s sweating bullets right now.
This would make my decade if true.

NCStatePride Wrote “No, it looks like the NCAA is really trying to flush out the monster in Carolina.”

This is like trying to flush a monster turd at your in-laws house; watching the water rise ever so closely to the rim, that little bit of panic as it reaches the top and then finally, at the last second, it all goes down. Unfortunateley, in UNX’s case, the water is already on the floor.

Barnes: ” Relax GAWolf, it’s just a follow up. ”

GAWolf: ” A follow up to what, Greg? ”

Barnes: ” A follow up to the Review. Routine. ”

GAWolf: ” What about the stealth visits we just got wind of? ”

Barnes: ” Just routine follow ups to the follow ups of the Review. ”

GAWolf: ” Nothing new to follow up? ”

Barnes: ” Just a follow up, but I’ll follow up with Dickie. ”

    GAWolf: ” Dickie’s a lame duck. ”

Barnes: ” I’ll follow up with Thorp, too.”

GAWolf: ” You’re gonna follow up with Thorp? ”

Barnes: ” I’m gonna follow up with Thorp. After he follows up with Dickie. “

Old Mac, that’s because the Flagship sets its own standards. How dare the lowly among us question them.

According to the PP monkey board sources, a new prong has arrove – recruiting violations!

  23. Ashman87 09/14/2011 at 7:22 PM #

I don’t think Roy’s sweating that much. If he is, it’s not because of anything his basketball players did wrong when it comes to academics. (now when it comes to smoking weed on the other hand….) I know that he follows Dean Smith when it comes to academics, and as a result, I don’t think there’s that much in that direction at all. Sorry graywolf.

  24. Hungwolf 09/14/2011 at 7:27 PM #

Interesting in the press release by Thorpe/UNC it was mentioned that the NCAA had been notified when the African studies department head was demoted. No mention of what was reported (No surprise) Most likely NCAA following up on that.
