Yow is in Houston for the Final Four. Virginia Commonwealth coach Shaka Smart, Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall and Cincinnati’s Mick Cronin are believed to be among Yow’s top targets.

Mick Cronin’s bio.

If you will remember, then earlier in the week JP Giglio made these tweets:

Those aren’t the only two options, just where the search is at …. both coaches still have games left

Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall, as he has been all along, and VCU’s Shaka Smart, are the main targets

Also, Dave Glenn made this report stating that Shaka Smart and two additional candidates were under consideration:

According to multiple sources, Wolfpack officials also are considering at least two additional candidates for the job. One of those candidates already has given preliminary approval of the basic framework of an agreement with NCSU.

Could Smart, Marshall, and Cronin mentioned by Giglio be the same three coaches from Glenn’s report?

Of the three main mid-majors mention, I think Shaka Smart would be the best choice. He has all the major requirement of a good coach except not much head coach experience and continued recruiting success. He seems to be a good motivator, has a good game plan, able to make changes during the game, and backs down from no one . Usually a trip to the Final Four jump start a school recruiting for the next year, it should follow him where goes. At NC State the new coach already has good building blocks in place. Even if Smart loses in the semi final game to Bulter, I think that carry more impressive than winning the NIT. Marshall has made to the NCAA tournament but never very deep.
    Please no Cronin

WAC conference champs, sweet 16 last year, 9 of 10 twenty plus win seasons, conference champs this year, no superstar players either. Only 49 years old. That would be what Randy Bennett has accomplished at Saint Marys, with one of the nation’s top offenses, won over St Johns, and lost by a 2 or 3 points to BYU, this year. What more could we ask for, he has the resume we want? Definitely could go for a high octane offense. If it is a battle with Smart, or Marshall, I think Bennett takes home the trophy.

Actually checked the score and Saint Marys lost by one point to BYU.

I can’t wait for this search to be over. Between these irritating shock “journalists” that I have never heard of and some of our self-loathing fans, the sooner we get a new coach, the better. I am just tired of it all. Make it go away DY!

this search has been much successful so far then the one with ole uncle Lee F-up. we havent had any coaches turn down an offer cause the hasnt been an offer yet. i for one was really wishing for a big name coach, but unfortunately they arent showing much interest in any prelim talks, and mak i was def looking deep into Randy Bennett and Chris Mack, thoses are the two i was hoping to hear more about. PLEASE DEAR GOD NO CRONIN!!!! i would love to beat UNX every year in more than one way but we dont need a coach that would recruit a rapist. we also dont need those big name coaches. i know that we should expect to beat the piss outta duke and carowhina every year but lets face it in acc b-ball were in the everybody else group. we dont have the shine around our name, we do have comparable facilities, a great history, an awesome arena, at the end of we have nothing to hang our heads about. we also have a ad that wont screw us. she isnt gonna hire any body that is mediocre or that has a problem playing against duke and UNX. We all need to relax and chill is it killing us because we havent heard anything yet? yes. but should we worry. NO!!! now lets all watch some baseball. go Yanks!!

A post from earlier in this thread….

” So we go from Barnes,Donovan, all these big name coaches and now we are talking Cronin and Smart and Marshall? Pastner turns us down and we are offering Smart 2.5?
I am extremely happy we have hired a search committee together. All of you DY supporters who are telling all calm down she knows what she is doing? Help me understand why I should remain confident? ”

With all due respect, you’re believing everything the rumor mongers are saying, and then running with it to an unsupported conclusion. We don’t know who, if anyone, has received offers, nor who has turned any offer down (if there were any). We don’t know who was on DY’s original wish list, nor who on that list remains a viable candidate.

DY has been catching a lot of flack, as have the folks that are taking a wait and see attitude before lynching her. A good deal of the reason for that is because people have gone into this thing with unreasonable expectations, and anything short of reaching those expectations is going to be viewed as failure.

DY has been impressive since she has taken over as AD, and NO, it is not ONLY because her predecessor was a (poorly) trained chimp. She is smart, observant and seems to really get “it”, “it” being the unique situation that is NC State.

While I don’t have “blind faith” that she can do no wrong, I do have confidence that she will make the best hire she possibly can and that the basketball program will be in good hands.

“Question – who’s a better coach Jim Larranga or Shaka Smart?

What if this was 2006, would everyone be all excited if we were looking at Jim Larranga (George Mason’s coach who went to Final 4 that year). Yes. Does that mean he’d be a great coach at NC State? not sure.”

Big difference in Smart and Larranaga. Larranaga was in his 21st year of head coaching (9th at GM) and to that point had 2 NCAA appearances and a few NIT flameouts. Smart is in his 2nd year as a head coach. Larranaga wasn’t viewed by anyone as a potential up-and-comer, but rather a long-time mid-major coach who was finally seeing some big-time success. People were congratulatory of a guy who’d worked hard and been around a while, but no one thought of his run as a stepping stone to a bigger job.

O.K. fine it is all speculation at this point, and it is, just wish I was 100% sure moving away from Sidney was a good move going foward (sounds crazy I know). Love the pack but seems like it will still be the old blah, blah, blah. Again we have to give kids a reason to come to Raleigh, I wouldn’t be sold…..I’d move out west, maybe Arizona. But whomever we hire I’ll still despise the heels with every ounce in me.5

    Great points PackerinRussia.

I’m just scared to death of Shaka’s short head coach resume. I’m thinking that’s who we end up with. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get him and he does great, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if he did poorly either.

Personally, I’d prefer Marshall. I see the same upside, but much less downside.

People who wants to compare this coaching search to the last have mentioned a lot of reasons this one is different – timing. Last search we were beginning to look for a coach after the final four. This time we will be hiring a coach at that time. Big difference.

Some point to the coaches that were hired at Ga. Tech and Tennessee. Are those two coaches anyone we wanted? If not, then it has no effect and is irrelevant to our search.

Finally, DY said it wouldn’t be fast because the coaches we targeted are still playing. Why is it so hard for some to pay attention to what we were told? She looks like a prophet to me.

  13. kyjelly 04/02/2011 at 10:58 AM #

Larranaga is this years Smart both stepped in it. As far as the tech and vols coaches go if it were down to Smart and Marshall I wouldhave rathered have the guy from Dayton or Martin.

Bennett actually owns Austrailia recruiting wise he actually did not even try to recruit Vandeberg so , thats already a plus!

  15. MISTA WOLF 04/02/2011 at 1:24 PM #

Yall need to get off Bennett’s lap. Not happening. Marshall is coming to coach us and its going to be all good. He’s got Calipari’s swagger without all the BS violations.

Smart first blamed his players, then the refs calls for his loss. Not the kind of coach we need at State. Let him go back to VA in his cave and stay away from Raleigh!!
