Yow is in Houston for the Final Four. Virginia Commonwealth coach Shaka Smart, Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall and Cincinnati’s Mick Cronin are believed to be among Yow’s top targets.

If you will remember, then earlier in the week JP Giglio made these tweets:

Those aren’t the only two options, just where the search is at …. both coaches still have games left

Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall, as he has been all along, and VCU’s Shaka Smart, are the main targets

Also, Dave Glenn made this report stating that Shaka Smart and two additional candidates were under consideration:

According to multiple sources, Wolfpack officials also are considering at least two additional candidates for the job. One of those candidates already has given preliminary approval of the basic framework of an agreement with NCSU.

Could Smart, Marshall, and Cronin mentioned by Giglio be the same three coaches from Glenn’s report?

All along I have thought we would take another shot at Rick Barnes (and fail), then take a shot at Miller (also fail) then end up with Marshall. He has won everywhere with minimal talent. Not sure why anyone would complain if we end up with him. We need to end this and pick him up now that his team is done playing. He will be a great coach for us.

  2. packman12 04/01/2011 at 12:16 PM #

RickJ..Don’t blame Cronin for the Degand injury. He was hurt at the end of the Davidson game. Also, agree on the upside on Marshall. He is a winner, a good recruiter, and he has ties with the south and now the midwest.

  3. ykuntz 04/01/2011 at 12:19 PM #

Cronin! Say it aint so please

  4. eas 04/01/2011 at 12:26 PM #

PLEASE let the Cronin talk be an April Fools joke!!! This would be a horrible hire for us. Sorry but I have never been a very big fan of Cronin. I sure hope DY turns out to be the AD we all think she is (this does not mean she has to land a big name but a SOLID coach that can be very well respected/liked by the University/Fans).

DY has been truly professional thus far and I continue to be impressed. However, if she pulls out a Fowler type hire I will be pissed. Especially since she has had months to prepare for it (she knew what the deal was) and she was practically hired to make these big changes.

Anyway, I just hope all the secrets turn out a solid coach. I also hope we have not used the search firm to contact 20 people only to be given the cold shoulder. No good coach likes being the “safety” hire regardless of money and the word spreads fast between coaches. I doubt this has occurred like the media thinks but you have to wonder a little bit.

  5. kyjelly 04/01/2011 at 12:31 PM #

So we go from Barnes,Donovan, all these big name coaches and now we are talking Cronin and Smart and Marshall? Pastner turns us down and we are offering Smart 2.5?
I am extremely happy we have hired a search committee together. All of you DY supporters who are telling all calm down she knows what she is doing? Help me understand why I should remain confident? She had to know Sid was done when she took over here and why were no successors lined up?

  6. eas 04/01/2011 at 12:41 PM #

I have to agree that she knew the SID situation by January (well truthfully it was probably known before that). Anyway, I also think with that much prep time and money on the table I am suprised we haven’t landed a solid coach yet.

I support DY for her performance TO DATE on the job. She is 2k X better than the clown we had before. I will also say that she better land us a good coach or she will instantly being put on the Sh** list of many. We all make mistakes but this one would be tough to come back from being that everyone knew this day was coming…..everyone (that includes coaching prospects).

Anyway, I just hope she gets it right and we don’t have to be divided much on the hire.

  7. tvp1 04/01/2011 at 12:44 PM #

Marshall or Smart would be very good hires. Someone talk me away from the ledge if its Cronin.

The reason DY didn’t have someone “lined up” is that it wasn’t possible, IMO. I have to face facts and recognize that “we are who they thought we were” – our job at this time is essentially no different that Clemson, Georgia, Texas A&M, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, etc. When we need a new coach we end up hiring a mid-major from whom our job represents a clear promotion. That’s totally fine as long as we hire the right guy.

  8. kyjelly 04/01/2011 at 12:47 PM #

I agree she is better than what we had but what is that saying?

  9. eas 04/01/2011 at 12:51 PM #

    ^ Excellent point.

I just hope she has something going on that will make us all fairly happy. She does handle the media well, lets hope she can handle a good hire.

  10. CannonballJunior 04/01/2011 at 12:53 PM #

I feel very good about either Marshall or Smart (slightly favor Marshall).

    Not sold on Cronin.

  11. Wolfman 9806 04/01/2011 at 12:55 PM #

Well stated, eas. We will learn a lot about DY and the attractiveness of our job, probably in the upcoming week.

I’m hoping for Geno (just kidding)

  12. sjmac11 04/01/2011 at 12:59 PM #

Shaka Smart…O.K., but seriously, WHO????. Head coach of Wichita State….wow, really? Can we not have a better plan going foward when we decide to dismiss a coach? We HAVE to have a “big” name to compete with UNC, Duke and Wake as far as recruiting is concerned. Whatever, I must take a breath and realize what I’m talking about. I know we don’t exactly have our pick of the litter as far as coaches are concerned but come on. Actively pursue “big” names before we get excited about guys who are in the N.I.T. with their school or ones who have had moderate sucess at mid majors. OUR NEW COACH MUST BE “SEXY” TO THE BIG TIME RECRUIT OR WE’LL FOREVER BE STUCK AT #3,4 IN THE STATE!!!!

  13. tann84 04/01/2011 at 1:04 PM #

So because she can’t brain wash a coach to change his mind to leave their school and coach at state, shes an awful AD? Do you realize what you are saying?

  14. patientwuf 04/01/2011 at 1:05 PM #

The only truth to Joe’s clarification is that Yow is in Houston.

  15. eas 04/01/2011 at 1:08 PM #

I still can’t believe how in the world Cronin is an option (Speculation by the media that may not be true). However, if it is true we have to be getting close to the bottom of the barrel and I could find it logical we have been turned down by many. I would rather have Towe step in for a year than Cronin any day.

Man I hope this thing doesn’t end up like before (MINUS the Clown and the media blitz from before). Meaning we end up with a hire that was really a last minute effort to save face for LF.

  16. eas 04/01/2011 at 1:12 PM #

I still have faith DY will make an excellent hire but if she doesn’t……man I don’t even want to talk about it.

She is professional and smart. I think she will put something together because she knows what it means for her own job.

  17. anonimus 04/01/2011 at 1:25 PM #

Again, why is everyone assuming a hire would be made by now? Is there some golden rule on successful coaching fire to hire times being X days or less? Many apparently had an imagined deadline of their own creation by which in their vast experience hiring Div I basketball coaches they know whether DY and co. are competently executing the hiring process. I don’t recall her saying, “If I don’t announce Rick Barnes as the coach by sundown Friday, March 25th, then run around like a bunch of crying nancy’s thinking the sky is falling.” Maybe some stats on fire to hire for Div I revenue sports programs might help some put their big boy pants back on and please stop this pathetic defeatist moaning based on the tweets and posts of those paid to fill the pages and airwaves with noise.

I’m really surprised that the buzz about Brad Stevens has been basically non-existent on here lately. Is he out for sure?
Personally I think the smoke screens are working perfectly and that we are just waiting for Butler’s season to be over before throwing the big bucks his way.

  19. RickJ 04/01/2011 at 1:45 PM #

“RickJ..Don’t blame Cronin for the Degand injury. He was hurt at the end of the Davidson game.”

Packman12 – You are mistaken. The Davidson game was on 12/21/07 and we won when Curry barely missed a half court shot at the buzzer. DeGand played in the Cincy game on 12/23/07 and was hurt at the end. Javi came in off the bench and hit the 2 free throws for Degand.

    Folks,

As I and many others have stated previously….and what the “offical” release said….there is absolutely NO verification, except for Sean Miller’s dad, that we have even extended or discussed an offer.

SO, don’t get your thongs in a bind. This thing is FAR from over. When I threw out my original list with the Fill in the Blank space, I assumed that Brad Stevens was not a viable candidate…and that he will stay at Butler. That is based on what the general consensus is…but he too, for the right opportunity and financial arrangement COULD be enticed to leave.

All this negativity about what SHOULD have been done is pure BS. Was DY supposed to make a midnight trip to Austin in December and try to seduce Rick Barnes? When did Herbie take notice of all the bitching and complaining…it was PROBABLY after he was bashed for losing again in the first round and floated a balloon and ASU grabbed it.

These things happen quickly….re-read the Roy Courtship and the decision. Re-read the Cremmins to USC tale….remember the old joke that USC meant “You Seen Cremmins?”…

When Smart and Stevens are THROUGH playing, or maybe they have already been approached by the “recruiter”, if they are interested, then she will be there to talk. I have a feeling that her dance card is filled for the weekend and maybe Tuesday..

It will NOT surprise me if we do NOT have an annoucement until NEXT Wednsday. Now remember, if you are good little boys (and girls), then say your prayers, brush your teeth and get the F in bed, otherwise Santy will leave you a lump of environmentally UNFRIENDLY COAL and the Obama police will charge you with high EPA crimes against the country.

“When we need a new coach we end up hiring a mid-major from whom our job represents a clear promotion. That’s totally fine as long as we hire the right guy.”

Yup. I’m sure it’s been said about Barnes before, but it would have been nice to have him come, build the program, and finish his career at State. Then when he retired the job search would be about stepping into a thriving program and not a rebuild – a step up, not sideways or down.

That’s not to say that one of the mid-major guys can’t succeed…

Question – who’s a better coach Jim Larranga or Shaka Smart?

What if this was 2006, would everyone be all excited if we were looking at Jim Larranga (George Mason’s coach who went to Final 4 that year). Yes. Does that mean he’d be a great coach at NC State? not sure.

So Adventuroo you go to bed at 2:04pm?

  25. ryebread 04/01/2011 at 6:23 PM #

I want no part of Cronin. I’d rather have Monte drink beer, play golf and lose 20 games next year as an interim than have Cronin. His teams play dirty, ugly basketball and it WAS against Cincy that Degand got hurt (on what was a very dirty play).
