Dave Glenn addresses Billy Donovan rumor(10 am updated)

Dave Glenn’s twitter feed:

From DG – “Sources at Florida and N.C. State not only deny the Billy Donovan-NCSU rumor, they mock the ridiculous, illogical, completely baseless and fundamentally insane nature of the whole thing.”

————————————————————————————
It was a wild day on the Internet this afternoon as apparently erroneous rumors broke that Billy Donovan was in Raleigh visiting/interviewing for the NC State basketball position. The rumors picked up steam shortly before 5:00 pm and then reached fever pitch with this report on twitter:

979ESPNRadio 97.9 ESPN Radio

Reliable source within ESPN tells us Billy Donovan is in Raleigh interviewing for N.C. State Job. Wow.

Additionally, Mike Lederer reported:

Breaking News: Florida Gators head coach Billy Donovan is currently in Raleigh, North Carolina interviewing for the vacant N.C. State head coaching position sources say.

Two sources have confirmed that Donovan is in fact in Raleigh and has likely already spoken with Athletic Director Debbie Yow.

Here is a link to Mike’s background. We have no clue if he is credible or not.

This was quickly shot down by Dave Telep of ESPN with this series of tweets(read from the bottom up):

Billy Donovan was in Crescent Beach, Fla., most of the day today. If you pass him driving home on HWY 301, shoot him a wave!

Regarding Donovan: two titles in Fla, helped build a church, he’s rich, well paid. Come on people, use your brains a little here.

I’m not home in Raleighwood but I know this much: Billy Donovan isn’t in Raleighwood either. He’s most definitely not a candidate at NCSU

So where does the search stand? J.P. Giglio gave us some updates tonight as well(read from the bottom up):

Those aren’t the only two options, just where the search is at …. both coaches still have games left

Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall, as he has been all along, and VCU’s Shaka Smart, are the main targets

N.C. State search unlikely to end this week

At this point, it appears all big name candidates are off the board and the focus has turned to up and comers and other mid-majors. Gregg Marshall is a name that is familiar to a lot of NC State fans from his success at Winthrop and his flirtation with our job 5 years ago. So it isn’t a surprise that he would be on Yow’s list after doing a very respectable rebuilding job at Wichita St. If you weren’t watching, then Wichita St. pounded Washington St. by 30+ points tonight in the NIT semi-finals.

When Marshall’s name comes up, immediately it will draw comments about personality issues. Regardless, he has built two programs from the ground up, been to the NCAA tournament 7 times, and is making a great run in this year’s NIT. Essentially, he has done nothing but win at a high level his entire career.

There has been a trend in recent years with successful mid-majors turning down major conference opportunities. Brad Stevens stayed at Butler after the run to the finals last year. Chris Mack turned down a $2 million per year, 8 year deal from Tennessee to stay at Xavier(NCAA issues at UT might have been a concern) this weekend. Richmond’s Chris Mooney turned down Georgia Tech although it has been speculated that it may not have even been an increase in pay.

So would Marshall take our job? Opinions vary:

TheBigLead Jason Mcintyre
As of today, i heard Marshall isnt an option at NCSU. okl or stays RT @GottliebShow: My guess is NC State gets Shaka, Marshall the back-up

Fortunately for NC State, another mid-major has emerged with VCU’s amazing run to the Final Four led by Shaka Smart. Smart is charismatic, intelligent, has a chip on his shoulder, has pedigree having worked for Oliver Purnell and Billy Donovan, recruiting experience throughout NC State’s geographic region, national recruiting experience at Florida, and a style of play that will attract players and sell lots of tickets.

In terms of fit for our job, the only thing he lacks is a long track record. However, his potential and room for growth appears almost unlimited. I have said for years that the easiest way for NC State to hire an elite coach is to hire them before they establish themselves at an Arizona(Miller) or a Texas(Barnes) when hiring them away is near impossible. He is a much more attractive candidate than Sean Miller was five years ago. Miller had only been at Xavier for 2 years and his results were average relative to Thad Matta, Skip Prosser and Pete Gillen previously. Should we have hired Sean Miller?

From Smart’s perspective, the NC State job appears to be right in his sweet spot. He and his wife reside in Richmond, so Raleigh is similar enough where the move makes sense(despite three moves recently to Clemson, to Gainesville and then to Richmond). At Clemson, he recruited NC, SC, and GA. At Florida, he recruited Florida and nationally. At VCU, he surely has built connections in Richmond, Tidewater, and the DC metro area. With the buzz from the Final Four run, he should be able to keep the roster and recruiting class together to give himself a chance to win immediately.

Essentially, it is a match made in heaven from both sides and the timing is perfect. He is the hottest young coach in the country, we have a job that suits him, and we have the money to pay what he is going to command. In my opinion, he would recruit at a higher level than either Herb Sendek or Sidney Lowe who combined to bring a top 15 recruiting haul since 1998. His predecessor at VCU, Anthony Grant, got $1.8 million per year from Alabama to give you a ballpark idea of what it will take to land Smart. In my opinion, it could end up taking more than $2 million to get Shaka to Raleigh. His team is built around 4 seniors so there is a reason to cash in now. But if he wins a national title this weekend, then can he really leave?

For those holding out hope that Yow is sending smoke screens to Giglio and his pals, then one NC State website(PackInsider) has stuck to its guns that something is going on regarding Billy Donovan:

Our sources come from people involved in coaching circles. From people who are not being swayed by the Parker Search Firm and by media hype. Could we be wrong? Absolutely, we could have been wrong on every breaking story we’ve ever released, but we haven’t been. Why think that those same people are giving us bad information now? We don’t and we trust what we’ve been told

Check the link and read the whole post from Pack Insider Staff.

As far as the Donovan rumors, various authors have heard Donovan rumors for a month+ from lots of different places. However, it just never made sense to us. I did do some research into Yow’s and Donovan’s background looking for a connection or something that would give us reason to believe the rumors. I stumbled across this old article detailing how Donovan built Florida and his confrontations with South Carolina coach Eddie Fogler and then Kansas coach Roy Williams:

Similarly, Miller’s decision to forgo Lexington and, especially, Lawrence, for sunny Gainesville sent such a shock wave through college basketball that an enraged Kansas coach Roy Williams sicced the NCAA on Florida—and didn’t care who knew it. “I don’t care who Skinny signs with,” said Williams, after his final visit to Miller’s hometown last fall, “I’m turning Florida in.

Never mind that a 10-month NCAA investigation, completed in August, cleared Donovan’s staff of the five allegations made by Kansas. In the murky, rumor-fueled world of recruiting, the mere fact that Williams, a squeaky-clean figure whose public acts and words are usually about as dry as grain dust, openly went after the Gators was tantamount to releasing the Starr report.

I was vague in that entry, but it should be obvious now why that entry was posted. Might the issues with Roy/UNC be a motivating factor to take the NC State job in addition to taking on a new opportunity at a basketball school with a fan base starving for success?

In the end, it doesn’t appear likely. But things can always change.

I really don’t know what to think at this point. With Shaka and Marshall as the leading candidates???? Shaka is a hot coach right now and has the swagger, so I would be OK with that hire.

I am just saying that with a good team in place, ACC, great facilities, PLENTY of money to spend and these 2 mid majors are the top options? Just seems strange that more experienced coaches are not in the mix. Marshall has experience but most fans are divided down the middle with his personality.

I would not mind a Shaka hire by no means but I got to be honest here and say I was expecting some bigger options from DY.

I mean this is really not a bad gig and it will pay very well……

With the big fat caveat that I think the only realistic outcome of this search, like any other search, is to catch a rising star and offer a hug step up, I will put forth a couple of observations about BD that make it not batazz crazy that he would give us a look, as the media would have you believe:

    1) Florida is a football school and plays in a crappy, small arena. BD played us in the RBC where UF won on a last-second 75-foot shot. The RBC was crazy that day. Perhaps BD had the same impression that TOB had, that this was a crowd he wouldn’t mind playing for in a building he wouldn’t mind playing in.

    2) Just making the NCAAs would satisfy NC State for probably 4 years. After winning 2 NCs, UF is not excited that they made the Elite Eight.

    3) Prestige. If BD won two National Championships at NC State, he would be in the Hall of Fame while still coaching. Those games would be milestones, in the CBS highlight reel, just like 74 and 83, instead of sort of forgettable wins like whenever UF won.

    4) We know that St Johns offered BD the job last year. You don’t make that offer if the dude has showed no inclination towards leaving.

All that said, NC State is a natural top-15 program, as evidenced by our recruiting across a number of coaches with varying success and backgrounds. A Shaka Smart or Gregg Marshall should do just fine. There are lots of coaches that could take NC State to regular top-15 status.

Something came out last week on the lst 11 hires of mid-majors that made the s16. 4 of 11 ended up being elite coaches.

That is pretty good odds IMO. We just have to make a good hire.

We don’t want Smart, not even for $1 a year. If he is selected all my State stuff goes in the basement. Another Lowe look-alike. Hell Fire, Damn. Why do we always settle for stupid, nobody-else-wants (big time that is) coaches. If Yow hires Smart she is more dumb than most any AD we have had!!!

I’m withholding judgment until at least Friday. the media guysare speculating as much as the apes on the monkey board. There’s enough chatter to hold tight for the start of the FInal Four. we get there and these candidates are likely the best options.

DU – what changed from Sunday when SFN was posting that things are heating up this week and that 2 big time coaches were promised an interview that just got done coaching the tournament? If they turned us down then why not say so? That way we can digest the disappointment and move on.

  7. Daily Update 03/29/2011 at 11:19 PM #

  9. AtariWolf 03/29/2011 at 11:21 PM #

SFN any reason you guys are changing your stance in regard to giving credibility to media knowing what is going on with our search. Seemed like you guys were pretty positive at start of week that big names were still in play and media had it wrong that we had moved on to mid major type names. Now you seem to be leaning more to giving media credibility regarding us having missed on big names, even though PI still feels confident in their sources regarding BD being in Raleigh.

Just trying to figure out what changed tonight to make the media more reliable?

Excellent summation and update of today’s whirlwind. I like Smart personally. I just hope he can work with freshmen instead of only upperclassmen. He would need to establish complete control from the beginning as his step up in recruiting would likely see lots of young teams with AAU attitudes. Not as big as a concern with Marshall because of his age and rumored demeanor.

In the end, I agree that both would be good hires. If for some reason we can’t land either and have to go to a “C” list type guy such as I’ll be really bummed and ready to give in. I hardly watched any hoops this year anyway and I used to be a DIE HARD. In fact, I’ve watched way more NCAA tourney than Wolfpack hoops this year. Sad!

  11. newt 03/29/2011 at 11:23 PM #

    A couple of other notes because I can’t edit…

I believe our team got a standing ovation of gratitude after the Florida loss as the players left the court.

If you don’t believe winning an NC at State leaves more of a legacy than winning 2 at UF, please reference the Sporting News poll on the greatest teams of all time and note the 74 State team’s dominance and note the annual recognition of the 83 win as arguably the greatest tournament victory.

Lastly, preexisting relationship between BD and Yow.

Again, I’m not saying there’s any credence to the BD rumors or that a major big name hire is a necessity; it’s not. I’m just flipping the bird at the media who think it’s a joke to imagine that a BD would have any interest. No it’s not.

I’m hoping against hope that this article turns out to be (or is) a “running interference” article.

I know it’s (probably) not … but still.

  15. newt 03/29/2011 at 11:33 PM #

Going to the Final Four gets you name recognition, which would get you into living rooms. Based on his rep, once in the living room, Shaka might could close the deal. There are no guarantees, but the recognition Shaka is getting counts as a big Pro for him for good reason.

    A general comment:

As far what has previously written, I can only comment on things I write and information that other authors share with me. We all have sources and sometimes there is information or details that we can’t(and don’t) share with each other.

My role is sort of “expert” on deciphering facts from fiction on twitter, message boards, blogs, etc…like my UNC message board pieced that showed the scope of the UNC scandal was known within hours of the 1st post about it on a UNC message boards.

  17. Daily Update 03/29/2011 at 11:39 PM #

Marshall’s personality? How many of our fans have personal contacts with Marshall to judge his personality? I am cool and happy with mid-major upshoots. The is the route to take. I will be happy with Marshall or Shaka. Shaka just reminds of the young Valvano. He act goofy but his team plays fearless bball.

  19. wolfpackattack89 03/29/2011 at 11:55 PM #

heard that the head of the wake county wolfpack club section or whatever you call it (I’m still a student so I don’t really know how the wolfpack club works yet) is saying donovan is a done deal and that we’re just waiting on yow to make it official tomorrow. heard that the deal is 6 years for 24 million or something like this. I hope that it is true!!!!

@DU . . . dude, no offense, but this is exactly what J.P. said on the radio today. And he did not say it with conviction, sort of that “no one has been offered and no one has officially interviewed.” I didn’t perceive J.P. had any inside information from his tone. I think he even stated that in the interview.

J.P. has always liked Marshall, which is fine. Marshall is a very good coach. Probably has tremendous upside at NC State since he’ll be able to recruit talent. We’ll be okay if it does become Marshall.

There are still plenty of twists and turns out there.

And last point, if it does come down to a Brey, Turgeon, Marshall, Smar, Martin we’ll be doing better than the last 20 years . . . that is some perspective.

And I love to go back to the FACTUAL evidence — coaches have greater upside at State. That data point on “top 15 recruiting” is unbelievable.

Easy buddy. What is that about? Really? How does Shaka a Lowe look-alike? Graduated with summa cum laude? Didn't Lowe take thirty something years to finished his online degree? This sort of emotional, baseless type of statements is what the term "lunatic fringe" is really coined for. How will you know for sure that Shaka will fail here to make call DY dumb if she hires him?

Shaka Smart has more experience now than Valvano or coach K had when they were hired in 1980. Yes there is a risk, but the potential reward is worth it. If the Donovan rumors are not true, I hope Shaka gets the job.

    * Gregg Marshall, Wichita State: Did an exceptional job in a steppingstone job at Winthrop, leading the team to seven NCAA Tournaments in nine years. Had to rebuild Wichita State and is four years in; finished second in each of the last two seasons. Kind of a quirky personality, which is a polite way to put it. OK, let me be more direct: the guy can be a real jerk. (Then again, so can I.)
