The Symmetry of Loserdom

I remember sitting in Carter-Finley on Philip Rivers’ Senior Day. State was choking against Maryland, and with under three minutes to play, the Terps missed what would have been the game tying extra point. I swear to God, I turned immediately to my family and said “Great, now we will lose in regulation.” Which we most certainly did.

State went on to beat a comically inept Kansas team in a meaningless minor bowl game, but what could have been a special (or at least very good) season had slipped away. And that was pretty much it for the Chuck Amato era. The window had slammed shut, and nothing epitomized the floundering to come better than that game against Maryland.

Flash forward to today. A game with the Atlantic Division title on the line for the Pack. A game that we only needed to win because of Tom O’Brien’s inexplicable decision to punt late against Clemson (after numerous blown opportunities to put the Tiggers away). A mediocre opponent with nothing to play for, whose spirit should have been crushed after finding themselves in an early 14-0 hole.

Of course our sphincters slammed shut. Of course we spit the bit. Of course we allowed Maryland to go on a 38-3 run and win the game. Of course we pissed away a “once in a generation” opportunity for a special season. We are NC State. That’s just how we roll.

Tom O’Brien proved his skeptics right. He can’t win the big one. He does get tight in pressure situations. He is a “football Sendek.” At least he probably won’t get a parade for matching Amato’s high water mark (5-3 in conference play). We’ve learned that much from past experience, one would hope.

Just like that chilly fall afternoon when Rivers threw his last home pass – Russell Wilson threw his last ACC pass today. And just like I strongly felt then, I feel it now – the window has slammed shut. It’s not going to happen for NC State under Tom O’Brien. Unless the “it” you are looking for is an 8-win season and a minor bowl bid. Blech.

Is Bryan really ready to go pro early? He doesn’t look like an NFL player to me.

I think Sweezy is the #2 guy on our D this year after Irving.

Agreed about Lemon – DE situation for next year is frightening.

“The fact that we lost a must win to Maryland doesn’t mean that this coaching staff can’t win the big win any more than the wins over FSU and UNC were proof that they are championship coaches.”

Every time we got ranked we laid a TOB.
Every time we had a chance to cement the title game we laid a TOB.

There is a reason BC fans got sick of nine win seasons.

“For the record, I would have been happy with just winning the Atlantic this year. We had multiple opportunities, and have only ourselves to blame for not getting it done.”

We had virtually NO injuries playing a very down ACC.
This was the prime opportunity to get it done.
I would have been happy with the title game even if we lost out because it would have proven he could win that big game.
    But we did not.

“What I wanted/expected when TOB was hired were 2 or 3 Atlantic titles, with at least one ACC championship.”

BJD – did you not have access to his record at BC or something? He was there 10 years and never closed the deal.

This site supported hiring TOB over PJ in spite of this glaring issue.

And hey – if he manage to go 5-3 3 of his next 4 or 2 of his next 3, I’ll consider the TOB era an unmitigated success with the predictable pitfalls of hiring this coach. TOB is what he is.

As for the game itself, I don’t know why anyone expected to easily win this game. Granted, we had more to play for than UMd, but UMd wasn’t going to be a dormat.

We did the things we did the last 2 years when we lost – our receivers dropped passes, we turned it over more than our opponent, and secondary was abused.

By the #s – this was a pretty even match up – especially if you bothered to notice how UMd’s offense had been improving while ours had been struggling. You also should have noticed how QBs could pick apart our D. This D became excellent against the run, but really sucked against the pass.

I’d suggest viewing the TOB era for what you should have viewed it as when he was hired, a chance for NC State to build a solid foundation in terms of winning football, fan support and talent, but probably one missing the “brass ring.”

And I’m OK w/ that – but I want the consistency. Most programs have to walk before they run – and NC State certainly isn’t a program that has the history behind that most other schools do who can execute those quick turnarounds.

Hopefully, TOB builds something similar to what he built at BC – where even a skitzo AD hasn’t been able to stop the program from winning.

Chop, I agree to a point with what you’re saying and that it takes time to change a culture. Crap, we’re only months from Fowler and I don’t think we’re anywhere ready to change the culture..

Any Bowl destination speculation that anyone would like to throw out there ?……I do not want to visit Charlotte for the Meineke Bowl…would have definitely there on the front row Atlantic side for the ACC Championship……………

I don’t think we can or will ever have a football dynasty at NC State, which is why I focus on Atlantic Division and ACC titles.

Sorry if I screwed up re Bryan. Thought he was a senior.

As to chop’s point, I thought what TOB did at BC was equivalent to what Sheridan did here. As such, I thought it represented TOB’s floor at NC State. I do think you should be able to get better athletes here, which is why TOB took the job and why I thought he could get over the hump here, at least once.

Still don’t want PJ. You will never, ever convince me that you could recruit players to play a triple option offense to NC State.

I sat on the first row of the 30 yard line right behind our bench. There was no emotion. No spirit. Stoic. Nothing there.

Russell sucked. If he’s our second best QB ever….that says alot. He peaked last year, possibly even his freshman year. I’d take Danny O’Brien any day.

RW is brilliant at times and then not so brilliant. Come on fellows that pass in the endzone against the heels was a prayer. He tried it against MD and nothing. The MD players know better than to tip the ball back into the field of play.

BJD, you’ve got to think “way outside the box”. And I mean “way outside”…If you’ll remember a few months ago, we were wondering if the ACC would survive…I can promise you that “the game isn’t over yet”!

  11. highstick 11/28/2010 at 3:32 PM #

I shall never be mad about an 8 win season, a bowl game, and a continuance of the winning streak against the Tar Heels. Yea, I want more, but “more does not come without growing pains”!

  12. packalum44 11/28/2010 at 3:34 PM #

There was no excuse to lose last night. None.

  13. MrPlywood 11/28/2010 at 3:52 PM #

“I don’t think we can or will ever have a football dynasty at NC State, which is why I focus on Atlantic Division and ACC titles.”

That is very similar in tone to TOB’s locker room interview. If the Atlantic Division and/or ACC is your ceiling, then “getting close” will be deemed acceptable… I think you need to aim higher.

8-9 wins a year will put us in the hunt for the acc every year. This is the acc not the sec.

  15. lush 11/28/2010 at 4:07 PM #

This team could have run the table. We gave away every loss this year. That can be fixed. Hopefully

  16. lush 11/28/2010 at 4:11 PM #

Russell gave away vt and ecu. Tob gave away Clemson. The whole team blew Maryland.

The chances of that happening again are slim

I recall a famous basketball coach who talked about getting his teams in a position to win games. This year’s football team was in a position to win every game this year. Can TOB and his staff build a program that converts those opportunities into consistent wins? That is the question.

  18. ADVENTUROO 11/28/2010 at 4:35 PM #

I’m not about to argue with all the Sunday Morning Coaches here. I watched the game on the Champions Club’s TV yesterday, but they were not allowed to play the audio….go figure….about as dumb as the NCAA rules on letting players use a football during the winter drills (see Ralph F. Article – Washington Post).

It seemed to me, just watching the cold video that several things happened….

We had the momentum….then it shifted. Old MO is a fickle soul.

Ref Cherry was a lottery pick. We have NOT had him this year. He gets “confused”. The calls were equally bad for both sides. The final spot at the end was a POOR call. We have gotten a LOT of great calls this year….sometimes you go to the well, once too often. I did NOT get the straight of the Official Review, but from what I saw, the spot was missed by at least a foot….maybe two. TOB thought we had a FD….and his reaction said it all. He KNEW that we got shafted. I personally hope that he sends in the “critique” that singes the ACC Chief Ref’s eyebrows….would we have tied the game if we had the first down…..DOUBTFUL, but we will never know….

RW did not have a Phillip Rivers game….and Phillip never had PR games, week in and week out….not at CF nor at SD. If you watch him, he seems to thrive on being behind and plays better when he needs to excite the fans. He is great to watch and there is probably NO coach that would turn him down….but he DOES cause his coach’s heart rate to “elevate” a bit. I do NOT think that you can blame any one game on one player….except maybe a FG kicker who should be perfect from 45 yards and misses five straight….that did NOT happen….it was an EXAMPLE of how ONE player COULD be the deciding factor.

The recivers were doing WORSE than RW. There were a LOT of catchable balls that were just DROPPED. Maybe it was the cold, maybe it was thier timing due to the fickle wind, maybe the officials greased OUR game ball….who knows, but the receivers were a MAJOR issue yesterday.

The OL was not totally up to the task. RW got sacked, hurried, scrambled, etc. He was NOT just back there on break, waiting for a receiver to open up.

The DS was NOT that sharp…..when a rookie QB sets a new school record, then our D was not the best. Maybe that is lack of experience, lack of coaching preparation, lack of desire, being TOO COLD, not getting a good night’s sleep, worrying about how they would look on TV against VT in the ACCCG, who knows….but SOMETHING got into their heads.

When you get three scores down, then you rarely WIN (remember ECU?)…so the game is over.

Maybe we will luck out and go to the Chicken Bowl in Atlanta. I have about had it with trips to Orlando….did that on Amato’s watch….that stadium SUCKS….you have to cover the little un’s eyes on the way to the stadium as the “ladies” that are on the street corner’s are NOT out asking for Salvation Army donations from the passing cars….
TOB KNEW that the gig was up, about towards the end of the 3rd quarter. We were behind, but not THAT far behind. You could see it in his demeanor. He knew that only a miracle or a rabbit could pull this one out….

  19. smile102 11/28/2010 at 4:42 PM #

“Russell sucked. If he’s our second best QB ever….that says a lot.”

    Third (perhaps); remember Roman Gabriel.

Strivers and climbers schedule a challenging outside opponent instead of 4 OK teams where the upside is a win, but not a meaningful game or a fun fan game like a ND. You get nothing except a padded record. 8 wins gets you 4-4 or 5-3 league, which is the only meaningful yardstick of success, at least for now.

  20. Skeeball 11/28/2010 at 5:13 PM #

I am disappointed with yesterdays game, BUT we have alot to look forward to. 8 wins with all but one OL are soph., the whole secondary is young. A young FR stud running back and two great returning LB. Quit bitching remember you could be a Carolina Fan; what do they have to look forward to?

A lot of post keep saying we dont have the right coach to go to the next level, should Alabama, Boise, LSU or even Florida fire their coach cause they didnt compete (not win) for a national championship this year. If you think we should be competing for a National Championship or even go to a BCS bowl after the crap we have produced the last 30 years you really arent much of a fan of NCSU because you have had your head in the sand or you just got on the band wagon this year. Either way, put your head back in the sand our get off my band wagon!

  21. Wulfpack 11/28/2010 at 5:29 PM #

I hope I’m wrong, but TOB doesn’t sniff the opportunity he had yesterday in College Park. Everything in the world lined up perfectly well for us to go to Charlotte. We blew it. Next year we’ll win 6 or 7 games and the natives will be restless.

  22. lush 11/28/2010 at 6:05 PM #

what logic goes into predicting a worse record next year? 15 starters returning? Harder schedule? We got blown out of so many games this year?

More experience leads to more close wins. Instead of choking 4 times we choke twice. That’s 10 wins and a trip to the championship.

Which, by the way, is what everyone wanted with tob.

  23. newt 11/28/2010 at 6:28 PM #

We exceeded my expectations by one game this year – I predicted 7-5. Some of you predicted we’d win 3 or 4 games and now are disappointed enough with last night’s loss to condemn the whole program. What a joke.

p.s. I bet Joe Ovies rubbed one off when that ball was called a first down…

  24. highstick 11/28/2010 at 7:06 PM #

“But we have to walk before we can run.”

Agreed, and we have to listen to fans moan and groan in the process…If we go backwards next year, I’m concerned…If we do as well and win more convincingly, I’m happy..cause we’re taking those baby steps…

We won games that we shouldn’t(Fl. State and UNC) and lost games that we should have won(VT, Clempson, and ECU).

Is TOB the one to take us to the “promised land”, probably not, but you gotta stabilize and keep moving forward.

  25. highstick 11/28/2010 at 7:11 PM #

“This is the acc not the sec. Get off the ledge looney tunes.”

You’re missing my point as has everyone else on here so far.
