The Symmetry of Loserdom

I remember sitting in Carter-Finley on Philip Rivers’ Senior Day. State was choking against Maryland, and with under three minutes to play, the Terps missed what would have been the game tying extra point. I swear to God, I turned immediately to my family and said “Great, now we will lose in regulation.” Which we most certainly did.

State went on to beat a comically inept Kansas team in a meaningless minor bowl game, but what could have been a special (or at least very good) season had slipped away. And that was pretty much it for the Chuck Amato era. The window had slammed shut, and nothing epitomized the floundering to come better than that game against Maryland.

Flash forward to today. A game with the Atlantic Division title on the line for the Pack. A game that we only needed to win because of Tom O’Brien’s inexplicable decision to punt late against Clemson (after numerous blown opportunities to put the Tiggers away). A mediocre opponent with nothing to play for, whose spirit should have been crushed after finding themselves in an early 14-0 hole.

Of course our sphincters slammed shut. Of course we spit the bit. Of course we allowed Maryland to go on a 38-3 run and win the game. Of course we pissed away a “once in a generation” opportunity for a special season. We are NC State. That’s just how we roll.

Tom O’Brien proved his skeptics right. He can’t win the big one. He does get tight in pressure situations. He is a “football Sendek.” At least he probably won’t get a parade for matching Amato’s high water mark (5-3 in conference play). We’ve learned that much from past experience, one would hope.

Just like that chilly fall afternoon when Rivers threw his last home pass – Russell Wilson threw his last ACC pass today. And just like I strongly felt then, I feel it now – the window has slammed shut. It’s not going to happen for NC State under Tom O’Brien. Unless the “it” you are looking for is an 8-win season and a minor bowl bid. Blech.

^ the reason why most of us are upset at this lose is because we know this team could be so much better than it is. We were out-coached again and to conservative again (see clemson disaster) We did nothing to disrupt MD’s D in the second half. (no delayed counts, hurry up, etc. we continued to call the same BS plays and when continued to have RW drop back to pass instead of roll out options which worked better because MD’s line was kicking our ass. Isn’t TOB and Bible supposed to be these O line guru’s? I’ve scene several games where our O line is getting crushed up the middle and our backs still can’t block an f’n blizter. losing games because we play well is one thing and most fans can live with. losing beause you are to f’n conservative and being outscored the way we were in teh 2nd half is inexcusable. Miami said cya on their coach after another mediocre season. We shouldn’t have to settle for 8-4, but that’s what we do and why we haven’t won jack since 1979 in fball and the early 90’s in bball.

And Oklahoma runs the same play for another TD!

  3. wufpup76 11/28/2010 at 12:31 AM #

Draw play on 3rd and 6 with no timeouts and a minute to play … It’s no wonder they have ‘State’ in their name.

Wow, talk about terrible clock mgmt. OSU just called a running play down 9 to burn 30 secs off the clock before they kicked a FG.

How do coaches screw this up so much? Managing the clock should be easy, but coach after coach screws it up.

  5. MA Wolfpack 11/28/2010 at 12:32 AM #

Game over….Oklahoma wins. We understand how the OSU fans feel.

Sorry to completely derail this thread, but Arizona (future NC State) opponent and Kansas are tied in the 2nd half on Espn2.

  7. BJD95 11/28/2010 at 12:38 AM #

No idea. And they just finished relaying a conversation with the coach about how giving up playcalling duties allowed him to focus more on things like clock management. The mind boggles.

We’re upset, and we should be. We lost this game due to some gutsy calls from the Fridge, and some help from Tirantes Cherry. Is it just me, or was he the ref every game we lost this year?

8-4 is ok, but could have been 11-1 easy.

I am surprised that so many of you are bailing on TOB.
Have you forgotten how young this team is in so many positions? Particularly the defense.

And if Wilson really wants to play in the NFL this year’s stats probably won’t help him as much as returning in ’11 with the majority of the O line coming back. Even if he leaves Glennon is not chopped liver.

Hey look the punt at Clemson pissed me off too but our improvement this year with lots of young players means only more experience with players who had enough taste of success to whet their appetite.

Your doom and gloom ignores the reality of the returning players & good coaches like Bible & Tenuta.
I doubt any of you really want to lose those coaches.

FWIW, I wrote this yesterday to a friend-

Of course we will lose tomorrow. We are NC State, this is what we do. The problem is, not only do I know it, but the players do as well. They will not be ready to play a complete game, they will either come out hot and fizzle at the first sign of adversity, or will not show up at all. Every NC State fan knows this in their heart, yet we keep alive the glimmer of hope that maybe one day things will change. Most will put the blame on TOB but I don’t feel that way, he’s battling the “we’re not winners” mentality that the entire NC State family of players and fans have let take root. As fans we have coddled and embraced the mediocrity that is NC State athletics to such a degree that even the players of the game expect nothing great of themselves. Making the leap from perennial loser to perennial contender takes time, it’s like trying to turn a nerd into the BMOC. Tomorrow will sting, but once the dust settles an 8-win season is like taking off the glasses and getting a hip haircut. That HAS to be followed up by an 8 or 9-win season next year so we can remove the pocket protector and stop snorting when we laugh. A few years of those type seasons and maybe we can start believing in excellence again instead of crossing our fingers and hoping for it.

    Ty chick Chan, I concur.

“but all is not lost. It was still a good season, and 4 in a row over the Holes is sweet.”

And therein lies the problem. We tend to think beating the heels and getting 8 wins is a good season – mediocrity at its best. If these are our expectations, then we get what we deserve and should not expect to do any better.

  13. wufpup76 11/28/2010 at 12:55 AM #

    ^Fair enough, chickenchan.

It’s the way we lost the games we lost this season … utterly painful.

But you can’t complain without also giving credit … the staff does deserve credit. It doesn’t absolve them of criticism though for stuff like we saw today. Ultimately, they are getting paid to change that culture and attitude.

  14. moose8865 11/28/2010 at 12:57 AM #

I would trade a win over maryland today fir 4 straight losses to the heels

  15. gcpack 11/28/2010 at 1:01 AM #

Mediocre is 5 & 6 win seasons, not 8. A .667 win percentage is entirely acceptable for this young team when you look at our overall historical percentage that is barely over .500.

It hurts but you guys need to take a deep breath & step back to realize what a step forward this season is.

I swear some of you sound like closet baby blues if I didn’t know better.

  16. BJD95 11/28/2010 at 1:04 AM #

So very many things broke right to put us in this position – THAT is what I don’t see repeating itself anytime soon.

Guys, Tom O’Brien is not 45 years old. He is not laying the foundation for his next 10-15 years here – he will be at his beach house then. We simply can’t give away opportunities like we received in 2010. This was the year. This was the “perfect storm.”

And we shat the bed against Maryland. Maryland!!!!

  17. chickenchan 11/28/2010 at 1:10 AM #

” Ultimately, they are getting paid to change that culture and attitude.”

I agree totally wufpup, my point is that multiple 8 or 9-win seasons in a row, which is what I think most of us were hoping for w/ the TOB hire, would begin to do that. This season should be viewed as a success and a step in the right direction. Let’s hope this becomes the norm and not another QB-inspired anomaly.

  18. BJD95 11/28/2010 at 1:17 AM #

This is an interesting point. I was very excited to bring in Tom O’Brien, but I viewed the 8-9 win season thing as his “floor” not his ceiling. But I liked the hire because I believed when the opportunity presented itself, he could provide the leadership to win a championship.

And I do feel that “QB-inspired anomaly” is something to be concerned about. I don’t believe NC State has the requisite talent base (or ever will) to be a dominant “smash mouth” kind of team. We have to have very good QB play to have a shot at a championship.

  19. chickenchan 11/28/2010 at 1:28 AM #

^^That almost sounds like you’re backing away from the ledge BJD. I thought that wouldn’t happen until Tuesday at least…

  20. codebrown 11/28/2010 at 1:31 AM #

We are who we thought we were.

  21. Tau837 11/28/2010 at 1:48 AM #

I understand venting on O’Brien and the coaching staff. In every one of our losses this season, I felt we could/should have won.

However, we won some games that could have gone the other way. We also have one of the youngest teams in the BCS conferences, and inexperience was frequently a factor. I see people bashing an 8-9 win season this year when before the season we all generally would have thought 8-9 wins would be this team’s ceiling.

Furthermore, as disappointed as I was today and after our other losses, I’ll gladly take a few seasons of 8-9 wins before O’Brien retires, if he can indeed deliver that.

All of those are reasons that I think with time (and hopefully a bowl win) our fans will come to better appreciate this season.

All that said, I get as frustrated as anyone by our coaching staff’s predictable playcalling and lack of adjustments. I definitely feel that State has largely wasted Russell Wilson’s career, similar to how it largely wasted Rivers’ career. In both cases, we could and should have had better results.

Here’s hoping the Glennon era will be more successful…

  22. chickenchan 11/28/2010 at 2:48 AM #

I, and maybe I’m the only one, think this coaching staff is better than any coaching staff since I’ve been a fan at making game-time adjustments. But unfortunately the other team is allowed to do the same thing, and you can’t blame the coaches for all the dropped passes I saw today.
Big boy Fridge and company are good enough to realize that the route through our defense does not go through Nate Irving, and they avoided him like the plague today. Let’s just hope that whomever we play next doesn’t get that memo.

  23. ncsuallday 11/28/2010 at 2:54 AM #

As much as I hate to see us lose and I agree that TOB is a mediocre coach at best, I don’t blame this particular loss on him. Our receivers (TJ Graham especially) couldn’t catch and this includes Spencer and Bryan who are usually on point. Our special teams struggled and we just couldn’t find holes in a very tough Maryland pass defense. In the long run I hope we find a better coach that will utilize the option, screen passes, tosses, and other misdirection plays. I have NO idea why we haven’t tried any of that, especially with the speed and talent of RW.

  24. McPete 11/28/2010 at 3:08 AM #

It would not have mattered if we won today; VT was going to curb stomp our faces next week if we made it. They are a much better team; they’ve been getting better throughout the season and we have been going in the opposite direction. TOB just saved everyone the expense of getting to Charlotte.

I am as pissed as anyone about the loss today, but not because I thought we could win the ACC. I just don’t understand why this team, and offense in particular, is getting worse. Our experienced players are screwing up as much as the younger guys. Spencer, Bryan, Smith, etc., were all off today at such a critical moment. And i KNOW we aren’t getting better at WR next year.

  25. travelwolf 11/28/2010 at 3:44 AM #

I don’t believe that you can blame the staff… It was an all around losing effort… everyone didn’t do their job. The whole team was off today – must have been a tough flight/bus ride up there. Wilson kept on overthrowing, and when he didn’t the receivers couldn’t catch. The defense couldn’t get to their QB. Our secondary couldn’t stop their one main receiver and didn’t bother looking over their shoulders to pick a ball off. The special teams let a field goal get blocked. The staff didn’t adjust well at halftime, etc. IT’S LIKE SOMEONE SPIKED THE GATORADE!

AND we still were in the game until the last minute… that says a lot! This has been a great season so far… Thanks TOB – I don’t care what these impatient morons on this chat room scribble. Jeez, grow up guys.

Maybe until we get better overall recruits, we won’t be able to win big. That might be the limiting factor. Who knows… TOB couldn’t recruit well at BC, so let’s hope that this season helps kickstart recruiting (and that recruits don’t read these web pages).
