Sid’s biggest challenge this year is getting the most out of CJL. I thought CJL played one good half in this tournament and that was the 2nd half on Friday night. He has to learn shot selection, when to give the ball to a guard and how to hustle on defense when his offense stinks. His biggest impact should be on the defensive side.

I think Lorenzo Brown is already our best player. Because he also plays defense.

The only thing that upset me about this game was Leslie. There will be other opportunities for significant OOC wins.

can you say “tale of 2 halves”…played great team ball and took great shots in the first half…….second half????????????? Looked like a pick up game down the street. No offensive sets….all give me the ball I’m shooting. pretty much bad shot themselves into a blowout for the other team…and Vanderberg is pointless…..can’t shoot, can’t dribble, can’t move hardly…and I think this is going to be what we see from this team all year….basically being able to run teams out of the gym, but also playing themselves into being run right out of the gym….at least its more exciting than the you know who years.

Can’t be mad after an awesome weekend of NC State sports! Hate losing, but to lose early to a very good team without Smith is not too bad. Also, as others have mentioned, great learning for the guards. BUT we must learn from this and improve so that if we meet these guys in March (optimistic? Haven’t been for 20 years or so!), we take them to the wood shed!

I’m not upset at this loss. Missing Tracy Smith is something not planned, this team has to grow up fast. Our youth and inexperience was exploited by GT. The upcoming schedule is a killer. Overall, it was one of the best weekends as State fan in years. Go Pack !

Well, mook21 has a damn good point. We are starting the season with nothing less than a loss to #21 ranked Georgetown, we got to watch #8 UNC lose twice to unranked teams, and most importantly we beat the Tar Babies in football yesterday. All-in-all, we can’t complain too much and we have a ton of gloating rights for at least a week.

  7. Wulfpack 11/21/2010 at 10:46 PM #

Ugly second half. Lowe’s challenge this year is to figure out how to get this team to play as a team – as a single unit. A lot of guys running around with little purpose tonight. Smith is out. That’s a big loss. But we could have showed better tonight. The interior defense, and rebounding, was expectedly poor.

  8. BSIE80 11/21/2010 at 10:49 PM #

Defense sucked. Sid has got to focus on defense.

Little surprised by how raw Leslie is. He’s a great athlete, no doubt, but needs to work on his game, particularly ballhandling and shot selection. Lo Brown and Harrow are very polished. Brown is a beast on offense, and defense, which is impressive for a freshman. Looking forward to the rest of this season. Those next three games are ridiculous, though. Be happy to win just one of those.

CJL and Ryan both 3-10 FG. Team had 9 assists. Wish I could have watched it, analysis would be easier. Seems like CJL might have been a little loose cannon. I was afraid we would see some of that.

  11. wolfy85 11/21/2010 at 10:53 PM #

I think a very good first half and a let-down second is about exactly what you would expect with our youth this early in the season. I think we’ll improve and learn to compete and play both halves. I’m just happy to know that we have the athletes to run and score points and compete with good teams, as we saw in the first half. Joseph Uchebo will be a tremendous help inside for rebounding next year. Go pack, get better and get ready for Wisconsin.

  12. choppack1 11/21/2010 at 10:54 PM #

Georgetown played like a good, veteran team – we played like a talented team that didn’t know what it takes to beat a real opponent.

There are a lot of red flags here – the biggest is that we just aren’t a very good team defensively. Our rebounding sucks – our footwork sucks – our help D sucks.

I didn’t like the line-up on the court as Georgetown pulled away – Javi, Brown, CJ Williams, Vandenberg/Painter and Leslie. I think a game like this you have to ride Howell – we needed his toughness and physical maturity.

Still – it’s early and we’re young. Lots of time for this team to improve and learn what kind of effort and execution it takes against good teams.

  13. 61Packer 11/21/2010 at 10:54 PM #

Georgetown is a lot better than #21; they could reach the Final Four. Our team so far is fun to watch and our talent is definitely going to win some games for us this season on offense, but they aren’t going to win anything with defense. Our weakness again is lack of team defense and poor rebounding. And unless you’ve got the kind of talent Kentucky had last year, you simply won’t win championships with great offense only.

But after UNC’s glorious showings this weekend- 2 losses for men’s basketball, elimination of women’s soccer in playoffs, title game field hockey loss, and a football loss to the Wolfpack, I’m not going to let this Charleston tournament upset me in the least. Bring on the Terps!

    My 2 cents…

We looked mentally and physically wooped 2nd half. Legs looked real shakey last 5 minutes. Freshmen making some bad decisions. We had some funky things going on. I remember when they started their run and we had Howell taking a 3??? Things just got out of wack and rhythm 2nd half. people in wrong places. Our big 3 freshmen, while I’m sure played several tournaments at high school level, are not accustom to playing 3 games of this magnitude in 4 days.

    The good news:

1-We were without Tracey Smith. Now, if this had been UNC without their senior leader the commentators would have plugged it every 5 minutes as an excuse. I don’t remember them mentioning it much at all. We will be better with him.

2-We played this tournament mainly with 3 freshmen and 4 sophmores, with a sprinkle of a junior and senior.

3-We will have other opportunities coming…soon, to make a splash ooc.

CJL is the least polished of the 3 freshmen. Harrow next and Brown is probably best all around playerwe have regardless of class. Leslie needs to stop shooting 3’s. He needs to work on his inside and mid-range this year and expand to 3 pt shooting once he has learned to play at this level. I hope if anything else, he is not getting mad about getting benched time to time, but instead should be thinking “I’m gonna need a couple of years to develop here”. I’m sure that will be hard to sink in when all you’ve heard is how tallented you are.

I really enjoyed the first half and anticipate some good fun to watch basketball this year.

  15. wolfy85 11/21/2010 at 10:56 PM #

By the way, I would hate to be a coach. Sid needed to bench CJL about 5 times in the second half but I guess he wants him to get these games out before the ACC schedule. So it’s a darned if you do, darned if you don’t kind of scenario, IMO.

  16. Wulfpack 11/21/2010 at 10:58 PM #

I am most impressed with Brown. He knows how to play the game. He can shoot. He can pass. He’s explosive. He got burned a few times back door, but so did everyone else, and he’s a freshman.

Harrow has all the skills to be great but he needs to play within himself. Too much, too fast. I also think he will wear down in ACC play, so we are fortunate to have Javi another year. He’s tiny.

CJL has a LOT of work to do. Several WTF moments tonight. And he was pretty much dominated down low tonight by the G’town bigs. And I don’t need to see he, nor Painter, nor Howell shooting 20 footers.

  17. Sweet jumper 11/21/2010 at 11:00 PM #

I am very proud of this team. They made it to the finals without our all-ACC stud lowpost player. We could have played better, but I think we will learn from this experience. I agree that Brown is our best, most consistent player.

  18. coach13 11/21/2010 at 11:00 PM #

Agree completely 61. Been a good weekend for Pack fans. Alot to look foward to. At least we lost to a ranked opponent. Let’s see. UNX lost 2 games, they were 9th. Should drop them down to…11th? (Sarcasm).

  19. Reynolds-camp-out 11/21/2010 at 11:08 PM #

The frustrating thing so far are simple fundamentals: on defense they are not switching well in the man2man & on offense poor, poor shot selection – somewhat ironic to get our a$$ handed to us by a princeton offense – maybe they can pull it out w/ a few minutes left…

  20. JeremyH 11/21/2010 at 11:19 PM #

So we finally find out the crap we were pulling in the last few games will not win us games against solid competition. We hit a drought in the 2nd half, and then sort of fell apart from there. I thought that our defense was stronger in the first half, but we just lost focus and fell into bad habits in the second.

CJ Leslie played terrible, and does not know how to play within the offense. Harrow was good, but made his freshman mistakes. The bottom line is many of those moves that make them look great in those highlight videos result in swatted shots at the college level. Still, Leslie did show flashes and Harrow is very skilled with the ball and with his array of shots. He is much better than Chris Wright when he was a freshman. I agree with the 5 Lorenzo Brown’s comment.

I saw improvement in defense and rebounding, but it still needs a lot of work. And our three point shooting is poor across games (today 25%). Is Scott Wood just going to jack up 3s all season? Show us something more, kid.

These are the growing pains, we will be a lot better in February then we are now.

    Agree J

So I live in Georgetown. I went to a local bar to watch the game. I assumed there would be lots of fans. Wrong. The bartender looked at me like I had two heads when I asked him if they were going to play it. There were ZERO G-Town fans. I could throw a stone at the campus. No fans. As I walked home I passed a few students and told them what a good game they just had. Blank stares. They had no idea what I was talking about. Georgetown sucks. I have no idea why someone would choose G-town over a Tobacco Road school.

I don’t mind losing but what hurts is we got blown out. We have more talent than them. They played great team b-ball in the second half. More importantly, every ball bounced their way. That tends to happen to veteran teams. They are not as good as the final score indicates. We missed Tracy big time tonight.

  23. ncsu_kappa 11/21/2010 at 11:29 PM #

Lorenzo is definitely as skilled as you could expect any freshman guard offensively and defensively. Am I the only one that has noticed that he never looks to set up teammates for easy buckets on fast breaks.

Correct if I’m wrong I’ve only seen two of our 4 games but he has attempted to finish on almost all of the fast breaks that ended up with anyone taking a shot in the paint. Where as Javi and Harrow look to set up somebody for an easy dunk unless you play off of them, then of course they score.

just to add another win to our weekend, NC State defeated Duke, UNC, and UNCG in the Triangle Quidditch Cup. Any win is a good win. GO PACK

I am in Charleston and was at all three games. We lost tonight to an experienced, fundamentally sound and GOOD (not great–Wofford gave them problems) team. Our inexperience was apparent, but it should have been, because at times we had on the floor three freshmen and one or two sophommores who played very little last year. I like this team. When they see an opening, they aggressively take it with a drive to the basket or an (attempted) pass to an open, or at least closer-to-the- basket, teammate. Some of the passes resulted in turnovers, but they were close to being great plays. At least the guys are looking for the opportunity. As they gain experience, they will make better decisions and they will be in better position to receive the EXPECTED pass. Our rebounding has improved, and I am impressed with Painter’s rebounding and defense, both of which are byproducts of his athleticism, in spite of his lack of experience. As for Leslie, I am disappoined in his game, or lack thereof. He seems to have no mid-range jump shot, and he appears to have no desire to practice same in pregame warmups. Yes, he’s athletic, and he has the potential to be a very effective player for us. He moves well and has had moments of really good man defense. However, in a number of stretches he has been a net negative on the court. A lottery pick…the way he’s playing now? Of course not. But I look forward to his development. Our shooting needs to improve, of course, including free throws, as does our defense. There is still the problem of giving too many open three-point shots. We seem to be trying really hard to fight our way around screens, but we need to be more effective at it. So…much work to do, but we have the players, and hopefully the coaches, to be successful.
