NC State/FSU Live Blogging

I already spilled lots of virtual ink explaining how important I believe this game is. Rather than re-hash it, let’s just say I’m eager to see if we can finally have a signature win to be proud of. It’s ours for the taking tonight.

Now, TAKE it, damn it!

UPDATE – Consider it taken!!!!!!!!!!

Just got back from Wild Bill’s American Ribhouse in Auckland, NZ, was lone American in the bar, but did convert the bar tender to a Wolfpack fan. So glad the game was on ESPN (the only US sports channel received down here) and that I took the afternoon off to watch my Pack!

Promised my students @ NCSU that my being in the other hemispheres would lead to a good season. Too bad the sabbatical ends in the middle of basketball season…

Go Pack & Go to hell Carolina!

TOB calls out everyone who says the coaching staff doesn’t allow/want RW to run … says it’s “absurd” and that RW “always has the green light to run”.

    Interesting …

Were there any recruits at the game tonight?

  4. SouthernWolf 10/28/2010 at 11:43 PM #

“Ha! Bible was yelling at TOB when he sent the FG team on the field. LMAO.”

I was yelling at TOB too, per football commandment 5:
thou shalt not attempt to tie the game with a fg when thou be less than 6″ from pay dirt”

  5. wufpup76 10/28/2010 at 11:48 PM #

I think both Bud Foster and Mark Stoops now have more camera time in Carter Finley stadium than any other person … perhaps even Mike Vick (look! he’s walking up the steps!! O M G !)

Foster and Stoops were shown after literally EVERY SINGLE PLAY.

the words of the great Larry Munson (voice of the UGA bulldogs) kept playing in my head when they fumbled:

“We were gone. I gave up, you did too. We were out of it and gone. Miracle!”

  7. BJD95 10/28/2010 at 11:55 PM #

The way I look at “to kick or not to kick” decisions is thus. What do you hope your opponent would do? I sure as hell wanted FSU to kick the FG on 4th and 1 on our 10. Didn’t you?

That means the right call is to go for it. And I guarantee that the Seminole fans wanted us to kick for the tie.

One can also demonstrate this mathematically, but I’m too damned tired and doped up on pain meds. Again, Woohoo!!!!

I COULD HAVE BEEN AT THIS DAMN GAME!!1

    !@#$%^&@!#$#%$^^&*&(

BJD…great point. I think in this game it was no-brainer to go for it. 2 min to go…on 6-inch line. you won’t get a better shot.

  10. GAWolf 10/29/2010 at 12:08 AM #

No doubt… going for it… whether we made it or not… was the right call in that situation. They’re ranked, we’re not and also hindsight is 20/20 not only because we scored the TD but more importantly because had it been tied they would have been in easy field goal range for the win.

  11. BJD95 10/29/2010 at 12:08 AM #

Frankly, I’d almost rather have given them the ball on the 6″ line than to have made the FG. Hey, you put their offense in a dangerous situation, with a good chance to get the ball back on their side of the 50 with 2 minutes to go. If you can’t stop them there, how likely would it have been to keep them from getting into FG position and beating you anyway?

And maybe I’m just old (and/or a misanthrope), but I almost prefer watching at home in HD now. Less hassle, cheaper food and drink, and no kids needing me to take them down to the bathroom.

My phone battery died at the game, sometime during the 1st quarter. I’m just now reading the entries here…

Wow, some of you are really pathetic. Sad even.

Bench Russell? Ball game over? Season killed? Dumping on Dean? We’re just losers? Coaches need to retire? We’re out coached?

And this about a team that just played its best game in years, in which the players out played, and the coaches out coached (aside from 2 drives), a deeper and more talented team, favored, and highly ranked.

I hope recruits were not reading this. I hope our team doesn’t. I thank God our players have more fight, loyalty, and heart than you do.

  13. GAWolf 10/29/2010 at 12:13 AM #

    Exactly, BJD.

This is a great win… and what else is pretty cool about today?

The mainstream media has finally legally demanded the key to UNC’s Pandora’s box. We win/win today ladies and gentlemen.

  14. PackisRolling 10/29/2010 at 12:13 AM #

^ not sure your age but at only 35 i’ve realized (especially for thur night game) i’d rather watch at home. i am 3 hour away though. At halftime I was so glad i didn’t go…at end of game? still glad.

  15. GAWolf 10/29/2010 at 12:16 AM #

TJ: Don’t slam the fans about dumping on Dean until you get home and see TOB’s halftime comments. It thoroughly pissed me off that he called that kid out and basically said the fumble was the entire reason we were behind. That’s hardly true.

You cannot blame us for thinking this would end like so many games before. Especially for us lifelong State fans… we’ve seen way too many wheel-less wagons in the second half of football games to not be concerned when a first half shapes up like this one did at the end.

Huge win, though. But for my child’s very first birthday being today I would have been there, too.

What did the stands look like in the second half? Did most folks make it back in???

  16. GAWolf 10/29/2010 at 12:21 AM #

As dejected as some of us were, I think most of us realized pulling RW wasn’t the answer… unleashing him was. That first drive in the second half regained my hope. The turnover/TD was obviously huge. But for a lucky bounce or two down the stretch we lose that game. It’s nice, and our team certainly deserves a break for a change, to have luck on our side.

It’s also nice for a change to hold our fate in our own hands. It’s been a long, long time since we could say that in football. Our team and staff should certainly be commended for that. There’s been tons of improvement, but with just a little bit more this will likely be a special season.

Some of you guys just don’t need to be reading liveblogs or open game threads. The beauty of it (for those of us who DO enjoy them) is the real time, kneejerk reactions and gallows humor. Reflection and sober analysis can come later. 🙂

Agreed, GAWolf. Fate in our hands. In November. Good feeling.

  18. wufpup76 10/29/2010 at 12:28 AM #

Whatever do you mean? Kneejerk reactions from State fans?

    Surely you jest …

  19. GAWolf 10/29/2010 at 12:30 AM #

Exactly… we have to delete most of the comments:

YEAH F*CK THAT REF! THAT CALL IS BULLSH!T!!!!

(THROWS STADIUM CUP FULL OF ICE ACROSS THE LIVING ROOM — ONE YEAR OLD KID WAKES UP AND STARTS SCREAMING IN CRIB UPSTAIRS)

    I kid.

  20. tjfoose1 10/29/2010 at 12:42 AM #

“It thoroughly pissed me off that he called that kid out and basically said the fumble was the entire reason we were behind.”

Haven’t cue’d up the DVR, but wow… I share your sentiment. Completely wrong on TOB’s part. Haynes does not deserve that, no player deserves that.

GAWOLF – my comments were not directed toward you… I can’t argue with general lamenting and such, but some of the comments I read were , IMO, out of line, misplaced, and disparaging. Several demerits on fan cards should have been issued tonight.

However, as a former player with a little coaching experience, I can admit that my history and perspective may at times make me slightly thin skinned when it comes to such things, at least in the eyes of some. If anything, I was always over protective of my teammates and players.

Great freak’n awesome win tonight! Looking forward to cuing up the DVR later… just wish I had a copy of the coaches tape…. Politics, History, computer nerd, and coaches tape? Seriously?… Sometimes I wish I wasn’t such a geek.

  21. tjfoose1 10/29/2010 at 12:46 AM #

“What did the stands look like in the second half? Did most folks make it back in???:

Not really. Not any more or less than usual. But I did find the atmosphere a little strange. It was quiet, but focused. Almost business like. For perspective, I’m at mid field, pretty close to the NC State bench.

The fans seemed on edge… reserved, watching intently, but waiting, wanting something to cheer about… Think they were holding their emotional involvement back until they saw something that deserved it…

Then we drove right down the field.. and BAM! Game on from there, team and fans alike.

  22. tjfoose1 10/29/2010 at 12:48 AM #

“Some of you guys just don’t need to be reading liveblogs or open game threads.”

Point taken. It does provide an outlet.

Somewhat apologies from me. I’ll keep the sentiment, but let up on the tone and harshness.

  23. GAWolf 10/29/2010 at 12:59 AM #

Any news on Haynes? He was in street clothes and the announcers mentioned a possible concussion. Hope he’s okay. Other than that no injuries to speak of other than Nate’s thumb?

  24. tjfoose1 10/29/2010 at 1:02 AM #

I watch the game more analytically than most… It takes effort, but it’s a habit.

From the outset, it appeared to me that the NC State coaches had specific schemes and game plans in place to attack FSU, using their strengths against them. Aside from the last drives of each half, I give them huge kudos. Best job they’ve done, that I can remember anyway.

I find what GAWOLF referred to about TOB’s comments regarding Hayne’s fumble abhorrent. Terrible. I think TOB owes an apology. I think, however, that it was caused by utter frustration and the ‘heat of the moment’. The game plan was working perfectly, then we make a boneheaded, simple mistake like that, and BAM… the mojo is lost.

FWIW, though most will probably disagree with me, I was in favor of the general scheme of our corners giving the cushion to the outside receivers. I had mentioned here several times that it drives me nuts when the defensive coaches try to cover everything and end up covering nothing.

It appeared to me we were backing off our corners so as to free up our safeties somewhat to give greater attention to the run game. Sometimes when facing a superior opponent you give up something to concentrate on strengths and tendencies.

We did that perfectly. Sure, they broke a few long runs, but FSU was not able to consistently run the ball all game. With their talent, they should have been able to do that. They have the best line in the conference, one of the best in the country. We,as a fan base, I don’t think, fully appreciate the magnitude of what our defense was able to do. Heck, same goes for our OL too… but that could be an entire posting by itself.

All that said, however… why the heck would we maintain that strategy in the closing minutes of the first half, of the game? Who cares if they run up the middle for 5-6 yards when there’s only 2 minutes to go and they have to drive the length of the field? Why give them 10-15 yards, AND the sideline to stop the clock? Why?

Put in the 5th DB, roll up the corners, and blitz Cole, Manning, or Nate to accentuate the pass rush of the 3 DL.

That’s my only complaint of the entire game.

My ears are ringing. When we wanted to, Carter Finley was rocking tonight. It was pandemonium in the 4th quarter. Excellent atmosphere. Easy top 5 game I’ve ever attended anywhere.
