NC State Beats UNC on Penalty Kicks to Advance in ACC Tourney!

#20 NC State won a crucial 1st round matchup versus #2 UNC in the first round of the ACC Men’s Soccer Championship in Cary, NC. In brutal weather conditions, the teams played two regulations and two sudden death overtimes without scoring a goal.

In the shootout, senior NC State goalkeeper Christopher Widman of Greensboro, NC saved the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th penalty shots in addition to scoring on the 3rd kick for NC State. Widman started and played every minute of every game this season for often criticized Head Coach George Tarantini’s resurgent program. The win moves the Pack to 13-6-1 and 3-5-1 in ACC play and in position for an NCAA tournament bid after a late season slide.

The ACC is the strongest conference in America in soccer with #2 Wake Forest, #4 UNC, #7 UVA, #12 Duke, #16 Maryland, #24 Boston College, and #25 NC State all ranked in college soccer’s version of the RPI.

This sets up a Friday night semi-final match against Boston College. In the regular season, NC State won a thriller by scoring in the 2nd sudden death overtime at NC State’s new soccer facility on campus. NC State controlled most of this game outshooting BC 19-7 and holding a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

The event is being held at WakeMed Soccer Park and the semi-final match is set for 8 pm on Friday night pending any changes due to weather.

I wonder about this “rejuvenation” that occurs at the same time that we get what appears to be a top shelf womens soccer coach. Competition perhaps?

And I thought no one listened to me 😉
It is interesting that this is occurring at the same time as the whole “loyalty” conversation in the thread concerning Lee’s latest fan comments.
When it comes down to it, as a fan, I’m certainly happy for the soccer team’s success this season. I did not keep up with each game, but took note of the several big wins this year. I was a little surprised to see the conference record of 3-5-1. I guess that attests to the strength of the conference since they are still ranked in the top 25. Good luck tomorrow!

On Topic: Amen Alpha, survive and advance.

Off Topic: Wow SFN… five 300×250 flash ads on a single page? Besides the 728×90 banner, really? At least tell DoubleClick to eliminate duplicate creatives/advertisers so we don’t see the same Sprint creative 4 times… yeesh.

Its been so long since we beat them at something I don’t know how to feel.

^ Perhaps rather than having to see the ads you’d prefer that SFN just charged each one of us a membership fee?

But I do have to agree that five 300×250’s exactly the same, especially when stacked on top of one another, seems like a less than efficient used of their advertising dollars. But, what do I know?

Also, some of you folks might be too young to remember, but there was a time (80’s) when NCSU Soccer was very relevant, both in the conference and nationally. To get a feel for the quality level of player the program was able to attract/recruit at the time, do a wiki search on “Tab Ramos”. He’s kind of the DT or PR of the Soccer program, and yet he isn’t even listed as a “notable former athlete” on the NCSU Athletics wiki page. Tragic.

If we are ranked 20th in the nation, you can bet that UNC-CH is ranked in the top 10!

Roy Lassiter wasn’t a scrub, either.

Wolfpack beat BC tonight 1-0 to advance to the ACC Final for the first time since 1990. I added more on the relevant forum thread.
