NC State Beats UNC on Penalty Kicks to Advance in ACC Tourney!

#20 NC State won a crucial 1st round matchup versus #2 UNC in the first round of the ACC Men’s Soccer Championship in Cary, NC. In brutal weather conditions, the teams played two regulations and two sudden death overtimes without scoring a goal.

In the shootout, senior NC State goalkeeper Christopher Widman of Greensboro, NC saved the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th penalty shots in addition to scoring on the 3rd kick for NC State. Widman started and played every minute of every game this season for often criticized Head Coach George Tarantini’s resurgent program. The win moves the Pack to 13-6-1 and 3-5-1 in ACC play and in position for an NCAA tournament bid after a late season slide.

The ACC is the strongest conference in America in soccer with #2 Wake Forest, #4 UNC, #7 UVA, #12 Duke, #16 Maryland, #24 Boston College, and #25 NC State all ranked in college soccer’s version of the RPI.

This sets up a Friday night semi-final match against Boston College. In the regular season, NC State won a thriller by scoring in the 2nd sudden death overtime at NC State’s new soccer facility on campus. NC State controlled most of this game outshooting BC 19-7 and holding a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

The event is being held at WakeMed Soccer Park and the semi-final match is set for 8 pm on Friday night pending any changes due to weather.

If we lose, then an NCAA bid is totally up in the air. If we win, then we are in (with a great chance to advance).

    1-0 Pack.

Great win, I’m happy for our soccer team. A win over UNC is always especially great. Hopefully they will keep the momentum going and win a few more. =]

Akron is the #1 ranked mens soccer team???!?? Wow.

Counting UNCC and UNCW, 6 teams from NC in that poll. The ACC is to soccer as the Pac-10 is to Softball.

    Go Pack! Great win.

    Yeah. Go Seahawks!

The soccer team recorded a shutout? Can we borrow them for our defense against Clemson this Saturday?

Congrats to the Men’s Soccer team. Anytime in any sport, when you beat the #2 team, especially at tournament time, you’ve accomplished something. When that team is UNC then its even sweeter.

Go relax, get some good rest tomorrow, and go kick BC’s arse on Friday.

Be nice to get an ACC title in this. Real good year for Men’s Soccer anyways- they’re doing us proud. I remember when I was going to State the program was a complete joke, they’ve turned it around.

Cool! Tarantino has some success at last!

Now to beat Duke and claim that title

ON TO AKRON. They only build their program with nonqualifiers…

nice work. DU: did you sit in the monsoon to watch this? if so…equally impressive effort on your part.

Tarantini may be a horse’s ass, but he is a good coach. The problem for the last 15 years is that our soccer fuhcilities weren’t worthy of hosting a toddler league.

Man, would it be nice for a conference championship?

  18. Daily Update 11/12/2009 at 9:43 AM #

Gawolf: I did, but thankfully Sammy’s has a roof and huge garage door type windows to make their outdoor patio “inside”.

Dogbreath: I know an assistant coach for a university in the state that is also a strong program. He has told me a lot of things about Tarantini in terms of his reputation and work ethic. Maybe he is rejuvenated and has things going again.

The facility on campus is great. Surprisingly, the students seemed to have really embraced going to the games. Hopefully the program will maintain this level of success if not improve in the next several years.

Awesome!! Just have to get past BC and coach Kelly (thank God they took down Duke, lol!) as we did earlier in the season. Gratz to the Pack, lets keep it up!

Good win. Congrats to the team. Still scratching my head as to how this team lost to 9th seed Virginia Tech during the regular season…

  21. sockerne1 11/12/2009 at 12:44 PM #

Thanks for the updates DU !
    Big congrats to this team.

Dogbreath….i’m assuming your comments about “good coach / fuhcilities” was all tongue in cheek?

Sorry for being a complete joke in the past Broccoman.
(bummer that its a fairly true statement)

I used to live with two guys who played for Taratini. Said he was psycho.

Good job fellows, one more step.

    Survive and advance.

From an old post on our message boards from PackerinRussia:

The success by the soccer team may do more harm than good. Not as if he needed a reason, but now Lee Fowler has a concrete example of why keeping a coach around forever will pay off eventually:

I know times are tough now and have been for the past X number of years, but you give any guy 20 or so years and he’s bound to have success. Just like that time…
