Wolfpack Week in Review

Last week’s results are a perfect microcosm of the athletic department’s ineptitude under “Coach” Fowler:

Baseball: 1-4 (defeated Wofford, lost to ECU, swept by FSU)

Softball: 0-4 (lost to ECU, swept by FSU)

Men’s Tennis: 1-1 (ACC Championships beat GT, lost to Miami)

Women’s Tennis: 0-1 (ACC Championships lost to FSU)

Men’s Golf: 4th of 11 teams at ACC Championships – Matt Hill co-individual winner

Women’s Golf: 4th of 9 teams at ACC Championships

Men’s Track and Field: 12th of 12 teams at ACC Championships

Women’s Track and Field: 7th of 12 teams at ACC Championships

Naturally, credit for the highlight of the week goes to NC State’s success-starved FANS, who packed Carter-Finley on Saturday to watch the football team practice. We are cautiously optimistic that the passion of Wolfpack nation will soon be rewarded.

If there is a God in heaven, this will be one of the last “Fowler Follies” update that SFN will have to make.

In fact… baseball is probably the easiest sport to turn pro in and get your degree. Many teams will let you go to school fall/spring; the normal terms. I believe the San Diego Padres and Trajan Langdon had this arrangement (I may be off on the team).

Right before I clicked on SFN for my daily Fowler update and saw this thread I recieved an email from UVa bragging about winning 2 ACC championships this weekend – men’s tennis and track and field. The fact that we can’t compete with them irks me no end. Not as much as UNC, but damn close.

The softball team is 3-12 in ACC play, I think. No idea what happened.

Wouldn’t you love to be a pro athlete and still get to come to a university setting in the off season to take a few classes, work out to stay in shape, and have some of that “you know what” chasing you while you have plenty of change in your pocket? Give me some of that.
Of course that’s easy to say after 30 plus years in the real world.

Assuming the total payroll outlay is $150,000, we paid around $21,000 per point scored at the conference meet.

There is not alot of real good financial information available for college athletics. However, there is one site that anyone that cares about this should know about….Google “Equity in Athletics”. Every school files an annual report with the government about their athletics program and this report includes some financial disclosures.

The bad news is that if you spend some time studing the numbers, you can easily conclude that there are inconsistencies between schools on how the numbers are reported. The numbers also appear to be “cooked” in some instances. The easiest way to prove my last claim is to look at Maryland’s numbers…..every year, total expenses exactly matches total revenue down to the last dollar.

So with those caveats, here is what State spent on Track & Field for the 07/08 school year:

    Men’s team (94 participants) Total Operating Expenses = $206k
    Women’s team (90 participants) – TOE = $438k

    Hope this link works:

I’m willing to give softball a break, they’ve recently actually won some hardware.

On one hand, I think it’s just a combination of a lot of programs rebuilding or reloading at the same time (which I’m willing to accept and handle), combined with some shitty coaching with a few other sports.

Bottom line is, however, that an athletics program (like ours) should never have a combined shittiness like we’re having, no matter what the excuse is. A competent, proactive Athletic Director and Administration should have the tools and checks/balances in place to prevent something like this from happening (particularly in year 8 of said AD’s tenure).

I think our ineptness is more than just a coincidence and a bunch of programs rebuilding at the same time and speaks more to way things are being run at NC State right now.

    Dr Bucky,

I don’t think Langdon signed, but I could have faulty memory chips. It was SD though.

You guys probably have nothing to fear regarding Wilson and MLB unless he has a stellar spring next yr.

The general line of demarcation with eligibilty remaining is at tops 5th round money.( Especially a 2 sporter. )

Unless of course ya just have to get out of Dodge ’cause it isn’t going to get any better the following yr.

I don’t see Wilson top 5 projected and I don’t see him needing to leave.

But, things can certainly change in a yr.

i would hope that if fowler is indeed on his way out as many think he is. that a replacement is already in place and there is only one press conference. We dont need to fire Jed and then spend 8 weeks looking for a new AD. Hopefuly part of this delay (in addition to buyout negotiations) is because the BOT is out there looking for and locking down Jeds replacement so he/she can be announced at the same time Jed is shown the door.

It’s not fair to say that NC State is bad at everything. We’re bad at a lot of things, we’re mediocre in a few more.

Here’s a question to Lee, Oblinger and our BOT:

Of the X sports that we have, how many are exceeding your expectations, how many are meeting your expectations, and how many are not?

Of those that are not – how long have they not been meeting your expectations?

If we have “X” # of scholarship sports, what % is an acceptable one of those sports not meeting expectations? Obviously, you can’t be first in everything, but would it concern you if we were really bad at more sports than we were really good at?

  11. packbackr04 04/20/2009 at 2:04 PM #

chop^ that sounds like a yearly review at my job. i think those happen at every freaking job in america outside of the NC State Athletics Dept.

  12. Alpha Wolf 04/20/2009 at 2:06 PM #

    Chop,

You can ask the question, but be prepared for a political-speak non-answer answer that says nothing concrete and probably relies on misdirection or deflection to avoid the issue.

In other words, these guys will try to baffle you with BS. As in the old line “if you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, then baffle them with BS.”

  13. old13 04/20/2009 at 2:10 PM #

And the only way around that, Alpha, is to have a very effective AD who builds things up whether the administration demands it or not. This is why I think there is little hope for NCSU athletics under the current administration – the BOT/Chancellor will not want an AD who keeps pushing them for support. That is, unless there is enough pressure from alumni and other contributors to have a very effective AD, and I have no feel about that.

  14. whitefang 04/20/2009 at 2:20 PM #

You are correct Alfa. When you talk to these kind of people you get pure “government talk” where when they are finished talking you just go “WTF did he just say?”. Unless you know them personally (and/or write big checks) and can get them off the record it is a waste of time.

  15. choppack1 04/20/2009 at 2:44 PM #

Here’s what I’m thinking the response will be:

*In some sports, we can’t really judge the results because our facilities are so far behind.

*In other sports, we just got those facilities, so we haven’t had time to fairly judge them.

*In other sports, we feel we are heading the right direction, and those that we are confident are not, we have made personnel decisions to expedite it.

    That’s what I’m thinking they’d say 🙂

  16. Wolf Dog 04/20/2009 at 3:08 PM #

Redfred2 How about Wilson sticking around all 4 years.

I got your point Redfred2. Unlike others who seemed more interested in attacking it/you than discussing your point. I understood you meant get his degree BEFORE he went pro. A Phillip Rivers type move you could say.

Family issues may ultimately determine the fate of Wilson. He keeps playing like he has and he may move into the NFL draft. If the play on the diamond equals a well paying MLB pick, he may go early to help his family. Either way I hope the best for the young man.

  17. choppack1 04/20/2009 at 3:22 PM #

Wolf – I’d also wager that RW will have at least one degree after 4 years, if not 3.

Now, if he wants stay and start on another I’m fine w/ that. I’m also fine w/ him leaving early if it’s in his best interest and that’s what he wants to do.

  18. Noah 04/20/2009 at 3:54 PM #

I’m also fine w/ him leaving early if it’s in his best interest and that’s what he wants to do.

If a MLB team is offering him a six-figure signing bonus, it’s definitely in his best interests to take it.

Take it while it’s in front of you because it isn’t going to be there later. The opportunity to come back and finish? That will always be here.

That said, Wilson probably needs to turn it up a notch before he’s faced with that decision.

  19. TomPack 04/20/2009 at 4:42 PM #

    Alpha,
You are dead on about there being no chance in heck of getting a straight answer to any direct questions considering the horrible condition of our sports teams right now. What I would love would be to have someone make a video of Foulup non-answers to questions intermixed with clips of Richard Gere singing “Razzle Dazzle” from the courtroom scene from Chicago. Somehow it just seems like it fits right now…

  20. Wolf Dog 04/20/2009 at 5:22 PM #

Wilson is such a great kid. I hope he is faced with a six figure decision one day.

  21. old13 04/20/2009 at 5:23 PM #

^^ Except that Foulup has no Razzle Dazzle, only Fizzle.

  22. Noah 04/20/2009 at 5:57 PM #

Except that Foulup has no Razzle Dazzle, only Fizzle.

He’ll be someone else’s problem soon.

  23. john of sparta 04/20/2009 at 6:33 PM #

    Glennon is Good.
    RW can bank on MLB.
    it’s that simple.

  24. 61Packer 04/20/2009 at 7:00 PM #

Fouler out anytime soon? No way. We need him to help sweep up our baseball/softball, tennis needs his love, he needs to keep outdoor field sports on track, and he needs to keep golf from going into the hole.

    I love you Jed!

  25. TheCOWDOG 04/20/2009 at 7:07 PM #

Why do most of ya’ll see Wilson as such a sure thing on the diamond?

For Pete’s sake don’t throw a bucket of Sherwin on me and paint it negative, but give me some criteria here boys.

Hoping like hell the boy will someday hit with some real consistency, but projecting him into a career in pro baseball right now is a bit pre mature.

I’m for letting it play out. Speed kills on the basepath, but he’s got a long way to go.
