Wolfpack Week in Review

Last week’s results are a perfect microcosm of the athletic department’s ineptitude under “Coach” Fowler:

Baseball: 1-4 (defeated Wofford, lost to ECU, swept by FSU)

Softball: 0-4 (lost to ECU, swept by FSU)

Men’s Tennis: 1-1 (ACC Championships beat GT, lost to Miami)

Women’s Tennis: 0-1 (ACC Championships lost to FSU)

Men’s Golf: 4th of 11 teams at ACC Championships – Matt Hill co-individual winner

Women’s Golf: 4th of 9 teams at ACC Championships

Men’s Track and Field: 12th of 12 teams at ACC Championships

Women’s Track and Field: 7th of 12 teams at ACC Championships

Naturally, credit for the highlight of the week goes to NC State’s success-starved FANS, who packed Carter-Finley on Saturday to watch the football team practice. We are cautiously optimistic that the passion of Wolfpack nation will soon be rewarded.

If there is a God in heaven, this will be one of the last “Fowler Follies” update that SFN will have to make.

And what do you think the real chances of this being the last “Fowler Follies” update? When is the next scheduled NC State sporting event : )

Congrats to Matt Hill for sharing medalist honors in the ACC Championships.

ACC Golf is very good again this year

“Hopefully, this will be the last “Fowler Follies” update that SFN will have to make.”

Yeah right. Heard that before. I hope I am wrong but I would be more surpised to see “Fowler out as AD” than see “Fowler given a 5 yr extension as AD”.

Time for Oblinger to break out another “Award for Excellence” for Fowler.

Why are we so piss-poor in Track & Field? We obviously have distance runners. Do we have no sprinters or field event guys at all? Are none of the football players (TJ Graham) participating in track like the Clemson guys do? We used to have great sprinters off the football team like Danny Peebles and Alvis Whitted.

Ok, I know the goal for Russell was to play baseball for a good NC State club. But he is in the worst possible position.

    1. He’s not playing for a good state club.
    2. He’s not playing for a bad state club.
    3. He’s not sitting the bench for a good state club.

He is IN FACT sitting the bench for a BAD state club…and that has got to be frustrating for Russell AND both coaching staffs. I know he identifies himself as a two sport athlete but something has got to give. Pat White will go in the first two rounds of the NFL draft…why couldn’t Russell? Plus…baseball teams are STILL looking at Pat White.

Thinkpack, I raised the same RW issue on another thread. It appears that Avent is really down on him. Furthermore, Glennon is chasing him. Here’s the article I cited:

    http://www.charlotteobserver.com/423/story/672771.html

I don’t know how good his pro baseball prospects really are at this stage as that is certainly not an area of expertise. But I can tell you if he has another year on the gridiron like he exhibited last year, he’s got a future in football.

If Wilson does not fulfill his pro aspirations in baseball then he will likely remain with the football team until he graduates. Sounds good on the surface but I am worried that if Glennon sees that Wilson is going to stay with fb he will then xfer to another program where he can start.
I really feel the best thing for our fb team would have been for Wilson to stay one more season with the fb team, go pro in baseball, and turn the reigns over to Glennon for the next two.

Same here…I don’t know much about the MLB draft, but I know there are like 800 rounds. And if you are ever on their draft board you rarely fall all the way off.

And as far as Glennon transferring…I don’t know if that would be the smartest thing for him. I mean he already redshirted, to transfer and waste another year would be risky. Especially in Football.

    “WHY…WHY? We used to have…” ^ ^ ^ ^ ^

If you aren’t drafted in the first 10-15 rounds, unless you just REALLY want to start playing pro ball, you probably don’t sign.

You want to sign your top dozen draft picks. After that, if you get ANYTHING at all out of ’em, you’re ahead of the game.

Look on the bright side – Men’s & Women’s golf is only 1 spot away from Lee’s goal.

  13. PackMan97 04/20/2009 at 11:36 AM #

I wouldn’t worry about a Glennon/Wilson controversy yet. Let’s just see how this year plays out. If Wilson is as injury prone this year as he was last, things will likely work themselves out.

Its really not possible to overstate how bad our track program is today. That team would have scored about 40 points at the NCHSAA 3A meet and finished way down the standings. 3:30 in the 4×400…well I just don’t know what to say. Its not like the ACC is even great in track, anymore. 11.09 earned all conference in the 100m.

I have no idea what is going on, but I know we have at least 3 paid assistants. Assuming the total payroll outlay is $150,000, we paid around $21,000 per point scored at the conference meet.

We did not field a single entrant in the 100m, 200m, 800m, 3000m steeple, 4x100r, pole vault or decathlon.

    Absolutely horrible.

  15. Noah 04/20/2009 at 11:38 AM #

We went from having no QBs to having two good ones and now we’re fretting losing both of them?

  16. Thinkpack17 04/20/2009 at 11:48 AM #

“If Wilson is as injury prone this year as he was last, things will likely work themselves out.”

Nah TOB has the slip and slide out…I’m sure he’ll teach Russell how to get down. If you are a 190 pound QB forget about that last yard and a half, go down and let one of our 4 RBs pick it up.

Uh, how about IF, Russell Wilson, being the well rounded and extremely intelligent young man that he is, does something as silly as sticking around for all four years at NC State University, and gets his degree?

I mean, something insane like that isn’t going to offend anyone around here is it?

I am at a point where I can be patient a bit with getting rid of Fowler now.
Ether Fowler or someone above him realizes he is too inept at his job to hire anyone, so he has used committees and/or agencies for the last two hires he has had to make. So, at least that hole is plugged for now.
However, if we want to actually improve the performances of some of these teams or, goodness forbid, fire a coach for constantly finishing near the bottom of the ACC, well, someone had better get moving on getting Fowler out of here.

Is Rollie Geiger still coaching outdoor track? If so, you can understand why we are horrible–Geiger treats spring track as a practice season for his beloved distance runners. Would you want to come to NC State as a sprinter or field event athlete and be coached by the Cross-Country coach?

We’re doing track on the cheap. We won multiple ACC championships in the 1970s and 1980s. Another proud program that has settled to the bottom of the ACC… Why not go hire the guy from St. Augs?

  20. Noah 04/20/2009 at 12:12 PM #

Pup Williams? That guy is never leaving. He’s the AD over there and loves it.

What part of playing professional sports prevents someone from getting a degree??

  23. IMFletcherWolf 04/20/2009 at 12:49 PM #

What has happened to the softball program? Didn’t they win the ACC a few seasons ago? Now I see them being swept by ECU. Guess the new stadium isn’t helping much.

Seems like when I was in school 85-89, we had a really good track and field program.

    What the hell happened?

“Seems like when I was in school 85-89, we had a really good track and field program.

That was 20 years ago. Half the kids on the team weren’t even born yet. We also had a good bb team 20 years ago but look at that now.
