NCSU Official Denies Fowler Rumors

In an article on WRAL.com, Dane Huffman conveys word from Lee Fowler:

A rumor making the rounds this week had N.C. State on the brink of a major athletics department shakeup. But university spokesman Keith Nichols said there had been no special meeting of the Board of Trustees, and Fowler said he wasn’t on the brink of leaving the school.

“I’m still here,” he said. “I’ve got a contract through October of 2013.”

Fowler said he had heard the rumor, but assumed it was an April Fool’s joke that had taken off on the Internet.

Take from that what you will, but also take from it the source: Lee Fowler himself, and also a PR guy.  Those that are not speaking tells you as much as those that are: no high level University official such as the Chancellor, or anyone on the Board of Trustees, for example.

Further, read between the lines and it sounds like Lee Fowler is being defiant: “I have a contract through 2013.”  Not “The University is happy with the job I am doing and this is just a crazy rumor.”

Folks, this story has real legs, and this is not the end of it as far as we know.  There have been off-the-record comments by those that do know what they are talking about that indeed something is going on. What this isn’t is an April Fool’s joke, or a message board rumor that got out of control. It is not something that the writers at Statefans Nation or any other blog dreamt up, made up, misinterpreted or misconstrued.  If anything, many of the folks here are being very careful to only point out palpable facts.

The bottom line: too many people in authority, in the know and close the to the situation are indicating as much — level-headed people who most definitely do not fit the stereotype of a mouth-breathing fan sitting in his mama’s basement stirring up trouble.

My feeling is this: compare the situation to the Joe Alleva situation at Duke a couple years back.  Alleva was not fired, per se, but it was made clear to him that key people at Duke were deeply dissatisfied with the job he was doing over there — and that those key people would prefer that he not continue in his position.  Alleva left, of course, to take the AD job at LSU…more or less a lateral move.   Nonetheless, he was pushed out the door, quietly, but forcefully.  At the end of the day, Alleva got another job, a public pat on the back and everybody moved on happy — and without a messy public soap opera played out in the newspapers that ended up in recriminations, lawsuits or buyouts.

It is very possible that this is exactly what is happening behind the scenes at NCSU.  Note I said possible.  That’s just my personal theory and nothing more than that.  But I do think that if you put all of the pieces together as logically as possible that’s what you come up with as the most likely scenario.  I could be wrong, or not.  Only time will tell.

My free advice to you is to sit back, draw a deep breath and take a “wait and see” attitude — no matter how you feel about Lee Fowler or anyone else at NC State.

Latest rumor du jour: A buyout is being negotiated right now…

If these were simply just internet rumors, then I doubt that Fowler would have addressed them publicly or payed them much mind. I’m continuing to wait and see.

I’ll take my usual “Hope for the best (LF goes to Vandy and SL goes to NBA to assist Vinny), but expect the worse (both stay and we continue to be stuck to the mediocre tarbaby)…

My personal opinion is that since the BOT can’t see Uncle Jed’s incompetence with the WBB coach search AND the WPC equate expensive facilities with nothing to show for it as a GOOD JOB by the AD, then not much will change…

…and LF had nothing to do with TOB coming to us. TOB made the first overture to NCSU and expressed interest in the job before Uncle Jed got out of his outhouse…er…lakehouse.

Can’t fire Fowler!…. Then who would we have to blame everything on? (Gasp)

    ;^)

Fowler said his contract goes until 2013. Ha! Sucker! If he knew anything, he’d know that the end of the world is in 2012. Oh shit… we really need to get someone else in there at A.D., and quick!

I’m glad you said “take a deep breath”, not “hold your breath”!

If there’s any truth to this, it might inspire me to continue on. These past two weeks of watching the UNC love fest has been more than I could handle and I’ve just about abandoned caring and started working on my golf game.

The WPC has their Charlotte area caravan traveling dog and pony show tomorrow night, I think. I thought about going, but decided I might show my butt if Foulup was there. It might be interesting if anyone going would report what transpires.

Obviously this is in the “far too good to be true” category, at least to those of us who lack inside information.

It’s long been a mystery (well, more of a deep disappointment) to me how someone who combines arrogance, a tin ear for the fan base, and mediocre to awful results has stayed around as long as he has. I’ve said before that the probable reason for that is a combination of (a) institutional inferiority complex on the part of much of our big donor base, which Fowler cleverly encourages, and (b) Fowler’s Sendekian skills at kissing big money ass and making excuses (the now-tired “facilities” claims).

Like most of you, I’ve been hearing for a year or so now multiple rumors that Fowler’s show is no longer playing to rave reviews. This started with his very public rolling on the Amato firing issue (and let’s not forget the subsequent faculty senate endorsement, a sure sign that Jed is getting heat from some quarters). Maybe, just maybe, things have hit or are nearing a point of critical mass. Maybe, just maybe, running a program that doesn’t lose tons of money and whose personnel generally stay out of prison isn’t enough any more. Maybe the excuse-making has finally worn thin.

It’s an interesting aside that PackPride appears to have gone into full Stasi-style lockdown on the Fowler rumor, at least on the free board (a depressingly familiar PackPride event of late, pace the Eve Carson issue).

    We shall see.

Are we still supposed to be patient here? Is this supposed to happen after the charity golf tournament? I reeallllly want this rumor to be true, but if not I’ve got some anonymous source rumors I can also post here as well.

    Yes, be patient.

Personally, and I’m one of those people with a “connection”, I’m giving this until the end of next week (April 17th). If nothing has happened by then (I mean OFFICIALLY and PUBLICLY), I will stop worrying about it and look forward to the Spring game on the 18th, and then the REAL football season in August.

Fowler’s golf tournament is Monday. It’s for charity. If we were firing him, is it really such a stretch to imagine that the BOT would wait an extra week, for charity purposes? IF something is going down, this is how I believe it WOULD go down. Let Fowler have his last hurrah (for charity) on Monday, then do the deed. Plus, they did that survey to learn what makes the WPC members donate, and a lot of people used it as a chance to crucify Fowler. I think they were building up ammunition to use when turning him loose.

Just be patient. Like Alpha says, good things come to those who wait.

And if they don’t, we only spent a week or so hoping and praying. And there’s always football season just around the corner!

And remember, it’s not like we’re firing a burger flipper here. These things take time. We may even be making calls right now to find a prospective replacement before making the formal announcement.

Just sit tight. I still have a good feeling about this.
