NCSU Official Denies Fowler Rumors

In an article on WRAL.com, Dane Huffman conveys word from Lee Fowler:

A rumor making the rounds this week had N.C. State on the brink of a major athletics department shakeup. But university spokesman Keith Nichols said there had been no special meeting of the Board of Trustees, and Fowler said he wasn’t on the brink of leaving the school.

“I’m still here,” he said. “I’ve got a contract through October of 2013.”

Fowler said he had heard the rumor, but assumed it was an April Fool’s joke that had taken off on the Internet.

Take from that what you will, but also take from it the source: Lee Fowler himself, and also a PR guy.  Those that are not speaking tells you as much as those that are: no high level University official such as the Chancellor, or anyone on the Board of Trustees, for example.

Further, read between the lines and it sounds like Lee Fowler is being defiant: “I have a contract through 2013.”  Not “The University is happy with the job I am doing and this is just a crazy rumor.”

Folks, this story has real legs, and this is not the end of it as far as we know.  There have been off-the-record comments by those that do know what they are talking about that indeed something is going on. What this isn’t is an April Fool’s joke, or a message board rumor that got out of control. It is not something that the writers at Statefans Nation or any other blog dreamt up, made up, misinterpreted or misconstrued.  If anything, many of the folks here are being very careful to only point out palpable facts.

The bottom line: too many people in authority, in the know and close the to the situation are indicating as much — level-headed people who most definitely do not fit the stereotype of a mouth-breathing fan sitting in his mama’s basement stirring up trouble.

My feeling is this: compare the situation to the Joe Alleva situation at Duke a couple years back.  Alleva was not fired, per se, but it was made clear to him that key people at Duke were deeply dissatisfied with the job he was doing over there — and that those key people would prefer that he not continue in his position.  Alleva left, of course, to take the AD job at LSU…more or less a lateral move.   Nonetheless, he was pushed out the door, quietly, but forcefully.  At the end of the day, Alleva got another job, a public pat on the back and everybody moved on happy — and without a messy public soap opera played out in the newspapers that ended up in recriminations, lawsuits or buyouts.

It is very possible that this is exactly what is happening behind the scenes at NCSU.  Note I said possible.  That’s just my personal theory and nothing more than that.  But I do think that if you put all of the pieces together as logically as possible that’s what you come up with as the most likely scenario.  I could be wrong, or not.  Only time will tell.

My free advice to you is to sit back, draw a deep breath and take a “wait and see” attitude — no matter how you feel about Lee Fowler or anyone else at NC State.

I just read the article and as someone trained to read between the lines, these were my thoughts:

    1) This screams of damage control (as others have adequately pointed out above in detail).

    2) Fowler’s self-made nemesis is clearly the “internet”. He will look back on his career, I believe, and be as attached to it as Al Gore’s infamous quote about inventing it. And we all know that’s not a good thing, regardless of one’s political affiliation.

    3) “I have a contract until 2013.” That sounds like a jab to me. It certainly sounds, at best, indignant. I agree with whoever pointed out that it says nothing about a vote of confidence from the BOT or anyone above him. That comment sounds more like a little kid saying: “but…but…but…” as he’s getting bad news.

    4) Of all the things that rubbed me wrong was this in regards to the WBB coach “search”: “I have interviewed Stephanie and interviewed some other candidates,” Fowler said. “The process has begun.” God rest her soul, Coach Yow passed away on January 24, 2009. That’s over two months ago. And it’s no secret that for a good while prior to her passing there was little doubt that she was fighting a losing battle. “The process has begun?” Are you kidding me?

    5) The piece ends with: “I’m looking for the best possible coach for NC State.” “I’m”. And there’s the problem. Can anyone get a list of all the coaches hired on his watch at NC State? Of the three most public searches he’s 0 for 2 in a bad, bad way. That assumes he had nothing to do with TOB coming to Raleigh, and all signs point to that being true. I’m curious the time line on the others. In this day of recruiting, time is always of the essence.

All this Fouler stuff on here the last 24 hours, plus today’s Final Four (which to spite State fans will wind up UNC-YouCon and then UNC Monday night), just screams one thing at me: WAIT ‘TIL NEXT YEAR!!!!!!

  3. Avid109 04/04/2009 at 7:45 AM #

I wonder if the state of the economy is also a factor in the situation. After the less-than-stellar basketball season we just had, I’m sure that the BOT has heard from several donors who are threatening to cut their donations if some changes aren’t made.

  4. ChemPack82 04/04/2009 at 7:57 AM #

We can only hope – and wait. Like a kid in a candy store waiting for the goodies. I’ll try not to drool…

Hope is far better than despair.

  5. jwrenn29 04/04/2009 at 7:58 AM #

I’ll have to wait and see, so I don’t get my hopes up only to have them dashed to the ground.

  6. Scooter 04/04/2009 at 8:27 AM #

We have to keep Fouler until 2013! How else will we realize the need for the facility updgrades that will surely make the difference in the success or failure of Wolfpack Sports?

I just got back from a week long business trip to California and was hoping to see some really great news last night/this morning. Oh well – guess I’ll have to be patient. While going through the mail last night, I openned the big envelope from the WPC to see LF’s grinning mug on the 1st page. More BS about facilities and not a word about our lack of success accross the board on the field (excepting the progress made in football). I can hardly stand to read that drivel. I sure hope this thing pans out and he is totally gone from NCSU. I also found it curious that in this day of electronic records that the 2009 membership figures were unavailable at printing time. Are you kidding me? I’m guessing the numbers took a significant dip after the steller 2007 membership campaigne that was helped immeasurably by the unexpected BB run in the ACCT and NIT. I’d be real curious to know where they stand now and if they still count all the members like myself who did’nt renew their memberships this past year. If anyone has the current number, could you please post it? I for one will not only renew as soon as Fowler is gone but will up my initial pledge by 100%.

the scary thing is that the BOT has wasted too much time getting Fowler out to make any moves on a bball coach this year. Was it not obvious 2-3 weeks ago that “Coach” couldnt even find a womens bball coach? i mean, all he has to do is walk to the building over and ask Glance if she’ll take the job? jebus, if Lee cant handle that simple task, i bet someone has to go to the bathroom with him.

Another classic example of the “non-denial denial” that politicians and celebrities who are in trouble engage in all the time. Make two carefully chosen true statements in sequence (in this case “I’m still here” and “my contract runs through 2013”) and hope that unwitting or unattentive listeners (about 90% of the American public) combine the two to reach a conclusion that the original speaker never said or intended to say (in this case, “I’m going to be here through 2013, when my contract ends”).
The fact that he in fact didn’t ACTUALLY say that, as pointed out above, speaks volumes.

This is “Media Relations 101” strategy for what to do where the rumors circulating are in fact true or partially true and you are trying to keep the story from growing legs.

  10. noblepack 04/04/2009 at 8:47 AM #

“I will repeat: too many credible people are speaking off of the record.”

I want LF gone as much as anyone, but why can’t those who are close to the situation keep their damned mouths shut? Is it so freakin’ hard to keep this quiet to avoid embarrassing the university any more then we already have? For god’s sakes this has now hit the mainstream media as an “internet rumor”. None of this was known until these so-called “sources” started talking and people starting posting.

Final 4 weekend is the perfect opportunity to execute hirings / firings as there’s so much else going on that we’d be flying under the radar, but we can’t even get that right. I hope that I wake up tomorrow to find we have a new AD and basketball coach, but it just all sounds too simple.

These sorts of leaks make me wonder if the BOT didn’t have as much culpability in our head basketball search as LF did.

And SFN.com, I love this site, it’s my favorite NC State blog and I agree with most of what’s posted here, but so help you if this ends up being nothing. Might as well shut the sight down.

  11. SMD 04/04/2009 at 8:53 AM #

^Huh? Why should they shut the site down? Are you suggesting some culpability in SFN reporting? I hope you were being tongue in cheek.

  12. Bubba 04/04/2009 at 8:55 AM #

I would imagine the BOT is trying to figure out how to come up with the nearly 1 million dollars needed to buyout LF.Then add another 400,000.00+ to hire a quality replacement unless we continue to go the cheap route.

As to the WBB search, its a lose/lose situation for any AD. Do you make the safe hire and piss off a large portion of fanbase or go out and hire a top coach and piss off all that were close to Coach Yow?

  13. noblepack 04/04/2009 at 9:06 AM #

SMD – I’m saying that if this appears to be a planted story and SFN chose to run with it, then they lose quite a bit of credibility with most people who rely on this site for news. As I said, I hope to god that the entire story is true and we have new leadership in the AD office, at a minimum. I’ll hold the “wait and see” attitude they want me to for now.

Bubba – I hope your analysis isn’t the case because then the BOT looks like an even bigger group of rubes then I’d ever imagined. For something like this to leak out without the basic tenants such as buyouts being figured out beforehand is beyond comprehension. Before “word one” gets out this sort of stuff should be figured out.

  14. graywolf 04/04/2009 at 9:11 AM #

I have been patient this long, I can be patient a little longer but, I hope that this is fact and not fiction. Maybe we are on the right track after all. We need someone that is willing to find coaches that have the desire and knowhow to WIN. I have a feeling that the BOT is beginning to understand that NC State is getting NEGATIVE press over its athletic program and that hurts them more than loosing.

  15. Wulfpack 04/04/2009 at 9:11 AM #

    I have a contract until 2013.

He’s just trying to piss off his superiors. Taking all of this into consideration, my opinion is Lee Fowler will be gone very soon.

  16. VaWolf82 04/04/2009 at 10:05 AM #

You need to reread the comments from BJD and JB. Nothing was posted as cold hard fact….rumors were reported as such. And nothing they posted was based on something written on a bathroom wall….or an internet message board which is about the same thing.

  17. CarnifeX 04/04/2009 at 10:08 AM #

This sounds a lot like the time in 2006 when Fowler publicly noted that Chuck Amato was our coach and would be for a long time…and then fired him 3 weeks later.

  18. Pack1998 04/04/2009 at 10:21 AM #

I don’t think SFN would post this if nothing was going on, and they would certainly pull it down or position the news differently if they felt it had no legs.

    Great stuff!

Does anyone have Lee Fowler’s stats over his career? With the exception of Sendek finishing 2nd one time and tied for 3rd another year, I don’t think any of Fowler’s big sports teams ever cracked the top 3 in the regular season. For NC State, with our facilities and over that long of a duration, that is very poor.

  19. Classof89 04/04/2009 at 10:59 AM #

THe most damning statistic in my book: No ACC Championships in Football, Womens/Mens Hoops, or Baseball during his tenure. I believe we may be the only ACC team to claim that dubious distinction…

wonder where we rank in “# of teams finishing in bottom 25% of league” the last 5 years?

I’m tired of “participation in post-season play” being the success criteria.

This is exactly right. Yesterday – or even on Monday – would be the perfect time to do this. Firing Fowler would barely make the front of the sports page of the News and Disturber. Nationally this would be no more than a blurb.

The thing that scares me though is I basically have zero confidence in leadership positions within the university – you know – the folks that would choose his successor. Could we do better than Fowler? Hell yeah – I’m sure we could. But I suppose it could be worse too. We might get stuck with Todd Turner v2.0.

Sounds like you’ve got a fundamental misunderstanding of blogs. If you ‘rely on this site for news’ it sounds like a personal problem to me, this is a great place for opinion, analysis, rumor, and scoops. They’ve had a pretty decent track record for this stuff but back in the day Calipari was close to being a ‘sure thing’ and the rumors were reported as such, so sounds like you should find yourself a grain of salt before you start throwing stones at a BLOG.

If you want to read news just stick to WRAL and GoPack.com

So what if SFN is wrong. I don’t stop watching the weather report because they got something wrong. Last week the weather men in Colorado claimed that we were going to get 4-8 inches. I woke up the next morning to 8 inches and the damn storm dropped 18 inches. SFN more accurate than most weather reports-I can live with a few misses and furthermore, they’ve been careful to “point out palpable facts.”

    Keep it coming SFN!

^^I can’t for the life of me find a way to edit that comment and put in the one ‘/’ I forgot to close out the blockquote

the first part was the quote and the second my response fyi, and no comment editing? really now?

If editing hasn’t “fixed itself” by Monday, then make a comment to Alpha and he will get to it as soon as he can. So just don’t any more mistakes this weekend. 🙂

There were a couple of early comments on this thread last night (that have since been deleted) suggesting that this was just a prank and that SFN, among others, had fallen for it …

BJD: I deleted them because they are nonsense. One should never, ever believe anything said on Pack Pride.

First, I don’t think they’ve fallen for anything here – they’ve only suggested that there are RUMORS about a shake-up of some kind involving N.C. State athletics and that there APPEARS to be something to these rumors. There’s nothing really for them to be wrong about … there *may* be something to it, and there may not be.

Second, even if it were the case that it is/was a prank then … so what. It got a whole bunch of us to buy in and contribute to stoking it. Nice job whoever (but damn you!)

It’s been strongly suggested that this has legs and where there’s smoke there’s fire etc. – and I believe those who have said it. Even if nothing happens it won’t lessen my opinion of this site or those who contribute here. They have a track record, and they’ve merely suggested that something is happening (has happened). Maybe one of the more facetious comments actually got it right and the BOT happened to throw together an impromptu poker game or devised a way to create another award of excellence for Fowler and the Sports Info Dept. Who knows? Whatever it turns out to be it appears we won’t know anything definitive for a little while.

    “Patience Luke. Use the Force!”

^ Some folks need to read http://www.rif.org.

We’ve only reported rumors and that there is a backstory that is so off the record it cannot be reported.

    Yet.

    If it happens.

    And again, wait and see.
