NCSU Official Denies Fowler Rumors

In an article on WRAL.com, Dane Huffman conveys word from Lee Fowler:

A rumor making the rounds this week had N.C. State on the brink of a major athletics department shakeup. But university spokesman Keith Nichols said there had been no special meeting of the Board of Trustees, and Fowler said he wasn’t on the brink of leaving the school.

“I’m still here,” he said. “I’ve got a contract through October of 2013.”

Fowler said he had heard the rumor, but assumed it was an April Fool’s joke that had taken off on the Internet.

Take from that what you will, but also take from it the source: Lee Fowler himself, and also a PR guy.  Those that are not speaking tells you as much as those that are: no high level University official such as the Chancellor, or anyone on the Board of Trustees, for example.

Further, read between the lines and it sounds like Lee Fowler is being defiant: “I have a contract through 2013.”  Not “The University is happy with the job I am doing and this is just a crazy rumor.”

Folks, this story has real legs, and this is not the end of it as far as we know.  There have been off-the-record comments by those that do know what they are talking about that indeed something is going on. What this isn’t is an April Fool’s joke, or a message board rumor that got out of control. It is not something that the writers at Statefans Nation or any other blog dreamt up, made up, misinterpreted or misconstrued.  If anything, many of the folks here are being very careful to only point out palpable facts.

The bottom line: too many people in authority, in the know and close the to the situation are indicating as much — level-headed people who most definitely do not fit the stereotype of a mouth-breathing fan sitting in his mama’s basement stirring up trouble.

My feeling is this: compare the situation to the Joe Alleva situation at Duke a couple years back.  Alleva was not fired, per se, but it was made clear to him that key people at Duke were deeply dissatisfied with the job he was doing over there — and that those key people would prefer that he not continue in his position.  Alleva left, of course, to take the AD job at LSU…more or less a lateral move.   Nonetheless, he was pushed out the door, quietly, but forcefully.  At the end of the day, Alleva got another job, a public pat on the back and everybody moved on happy — and without a messy public soap opera played out in the newspapers that ended up in recriminations, lawsuits or buyouts.

It is very possible that this is exactly what is happening behind the scenes at NCSU.  Note I said possible.  That’s just my personal theory and nothing more than that.  But I do think that if you put all of the pieces together as logically as possible that’s what you come up with as the most likely scenario.  I could be wrong, or not.  Only time will tell.

My free advice to you is to sit back, draw a deep breath and take a “wait and see” attitude — no matter how you feel about Lee Fowler or anyone else at NC State.

^Hahahaahahaahahahaha! State fans … “wait and see … patience” – what are these words?

And if this indeed is a prank it is pretty cruel toward Mr. Fowler (and his family) … and tough to swallow for State fans.

“stereotype of a mouth-breathing fan sitting in his mama’s basement stirring up trouble.”

^This hurts my feelings. Signed from mom’s basement (and endorsed by Bob Costas).

I think the guys here as SFN have proven their worth over the years. . . THEY are trusted by us for a good reason.

You, on the other hand, are a complete stranger whose agenda is completely unknown.

    Patience is a virtue.

i find it heartening that no REAL CONCRETE info has leaked out. such information can only hurt when you are trying to replace such a public figure (see” 2006 NC STATE mens head BBall coaching search). When information was flying all over the place (from Fowler, i might add) it hurt us more than it helped. Lets sit back and hope that the puzzle pieces are moving. Not only for a new AD, but a new Head BBall Coach. Yes, the silence is deafening at this point but look at it this way. If 2 weeks from today, Lee resigns to take over at Vandy and Sid resigns to go back to the NBA and we get Sean Miller as our new coach. I would rather be in the dark for the meantime.

I suspect the rumor was feelers for the BOT to check how dogone happy the alumni would be in this action. well, you have your answer!

^(Sorry the edit feature is not on for me.) I fully agree. I had also thought the if multiple changes are taking place, and a single announcement is desired, it could take awhile.

I will repeat: too many credible people are speaking off of the record.

I pray that this thing has legs.

Personally, I’m not getting the warm and fuzzies just because the administration is quiet.

When has anyone in our administration had a comment about ANYTHING?

While we are waiting for everything to unfold, I recommend you go buy some Tyson Any’tizers to snack on. 🙂

Change = bad. Status quo = good.

    ACHIEVE!

packalum, I clicked on that ad just for SFN 🙂

    Goooooo Tyson!

I do worry that Forty2tweleve on PP did say he made this up. He was the first person I read about this from. He has been reliable on some things in the past.
Fowler had been looking for another job for a long time. I’m not sure if he still is, but hopefully he ends up at another school soon.
I would like to have Sid around for another year. At the very least to keep what recruits we have.
Ah, the never ended stress of being a Wolfpack fan.

  15. leewolf 04/03/2009 at 10:28 PM #

I’m hoping all of this comes to fruition and I’m willing to be patient to see Fowler hit the road. We’ve waited this long what would a few more weeks mean?

    that’s funny.

Just to give a different perspective; ask yourself a question … Why would Lee Fowler call a press conference ONLY to say that in TWO WEEKS, a new Women’s basketball coach will be announced? I made sure to ask a few people who I know could care less about the situation or my hopes for the university (the chief feeler here was my father-in-law who is a rabid hockey fan and couldn’t give two craps about the ACC). When asked WHY an athletics director would do this, he responded “I don’t know. I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t call a press conference unless I had someone else to introduce as THE Women’s basketball coach, and then I would let him/her speak.” I know that I’m basing this argument on some deep conjecture here, but still. It’s puzzling to me that an aged man like Fowler (who I believe earned a degree from such an august institute like Vanderbilt–it says so in his bio) knows that press conferences that only tease the audience cause much more confusion than relieve suspicion. Does Lee need more people paying attention to him when our rival has a Saturday tip-off at the Final Four? Does Lee have a loneliness complex, and does he fill that void with reporters from local television and radio stations on sparse occasions? Does Lee not understand that public appearances ARE NOT his strong suit as AD? Doesn’t Lee understand that this type of behavior is of a kind that re-emphasizes the absence of a connection between the athletics administration and the AVERAGE NC State fan? Above all else, the final question must be this: Are we (the internet bloggers) responsible for your own (Lee’s) lack of self-image? If (and only Lee can answer this) the answer to this last question is “Yes,” then apparently you ARE the incompetent child many of us have believed you to be. If you are in any way removed from our administration over the next several days, you have only yourself to blame.

I can add, in the vein of “off-the-record” comments, I have spoken with some people who have a greater awareness of the situation than myself and the VAST majority of other Wolfpack fans that the BOT and some higher-ranking officials in the Wolfpack Club have started to voice much more dissatisfaction with “Coach” Fowler and the job he has done as our AD. Coupled with these reports–I would definitely say this story has legs.

But, as has been said above, as fans all we can really do is “wait and see”.

my guess is this whole issue was about the length of time it is taking to name the womens bb coach.

With Kentucky filling their position quickly, the powers at be probably met with Lee to speed up the process, so he doesn’t look like a dumb ass taking his time, etc.

Unless they are going after one of the coaches that are still in the NCAAT, he should have filled it by now. Hell Yow wanted Gleason, so i am good with that. He should just give it to her and be done with it.

  20. BSIE80 04/03/2009 at 11:00 PM #

I meant glance not gleason. Shows you how much i follow it.

This should be like Dean passing the team to Guthrie. We all knew it was a short term affair.

We should do the same for Glance. Give her a 3 yr contract and tell her to make plans on replacing herself at the end of the contract….

Just when Arizona was starting to steal the Pack’s dubious thunder with their futile Floyd fiasco. Whatever this is, I hope it’s quick, painless, and professional.

I hope it’s true for sure and finally the people that make such decisions are showing some stones. I contacted the Wolfpack Club about a month ago and let them know my “Red White & You” contribution would be half of what it was last year, as I didn’t see a real commitment that our overall athletics program wanted to be successful. My fingers are crossed, and if and when he does go, the other half of my contribution will be quickly on it’s way to the WPC.

    Also,
It really sucks that Wall now could easily just say “I am going to NCSU” and the guy is f**k around talking with Dook and Unx.

For all practical purposes, this guy is planning on playing 1 yr and then going pro. So really, what is the big deal, pick a program and go with it.

I bet Haith gets him at Miami when it is all said and done. He has a visit he is making and Haith will have him step in to M’s spot and “South Beach” etc…

I really, really hope that the major players and decision makers in this process took note of the overwhelmingly positive reaction that news of Fowler’s possible departure got from such a vast majority of the fanbase. I especially hope that Fowler himself took note and finally came to the realization that if that many people can see that you’re not very good at your job, maybe it’s time for some introspection. Who am I kidding, though? It will probably simply be dismissed and attributed to “that internet fad”.

I like SaccoV perspective, today Fowler held a presser to address the lunatic fringe! If only we had Ashley Judd.
