Dienhart: ‘Expect a breakout this fall’

A couple of years ago we highlighted various media exercises where Tom O’Brien was garnering praise and high rankings. It may be worth some of your time to do a little surfing.

As you can see from some of the previous links, Tom Dienhart was writing for The Sporting News in the past. Today, Dienhart writes for SI.com and has reprised his rankings of ACC Coaches. (Link)

You have to give Dienhart major ‘props’ for exhibiting a trait with which that most media members struggle mightily – consistency. Two years ago, Dienhart ranked Tom O’Brien #3 in the ACC…and, without any reason to make a change…he does the same thing this year.

1. Jim Grobe, Wake Forest
2. Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech

3. Tom O’Brien, N.C. State

There are few better coaches in the nation than the perpetually underrated O’Brien, who thrives on running a smart, disciplined program. He was 75-45 at Boston College from 1997-2006. Unappreciated in Chestnut Hill, O’Brien is starting to turn around the Wolfpack, going 11-14 in his first two years. He was at his best last fall, when he rallied the Wolfpack from a 2-6 start to four consecutive victories and a bowl trip. Expect a breakout this fall.

4. Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech
5. Butch Davis, North Carolina
6. Bobby Bowden, Florida State
7. Al Groh, Virginia
8. Ralph Friedgen, Maryland
9. David Cutcliffe, Duke
10. Dabo Swinney, Clemson
11. Randy Shannon, Miami
12. Frank Spaziani, Boston College

Note that Dienhart – whose list includes some interesting tidbits and rationale for each coach – ranks David Cutcliffe in 9th position. This is a rationale departure from ESPN’s Heather Dinich’s love for Duke’s coach that we discussed in this related entry from last year that you should check out.

Hey, today is the 13th. Think we’ll be hearing anything interesting as soon as tomorrow???

Yes, I’m still holding my breath for some good news on LF.

  2. Rick 04/13/2009 at 1:11 PM #

I think/hope we will be good but my will has been broken so I expect us to find a way to not be good.

I sometimes wonder if we appreciate how lucky we are to have TOB. He is the one thing standing between us and total futility in the athletic dept at State.
Sure we might not win a championship this year (or next) but we are in so much better hands at CF than we are anywhere else. And I am not sure we did anything except be there at the right time and said yes. When is the last time we got that lucky? Well maybe when a young kid from Va was too “short” to play qb anywhere else.

I do have a little insight into the Spring Football practice situation. I didn’t get a lot but I will pass on what I’ve learned over Easter.
The Defense is ahead of the Offense. This is not all that surprising considering the fact the J. Eugene and D. Bowens are still MIA. The surprising part, to me, was that the O-line still looks like a ‘work-in-progress.’ R. Wilson is splitting duties with the Baseball team, so he isn’t getting all of the rep’s that he should. Glennon looks good. Really good. Will they run the spread option for him? I don’t know. But until the O-line is formidable, I would probably expect to see Wilson with the starting nod, unless something crazy happens like an injury or the fear of an injury (ie. picking baseball over football – which I don’t see happening). But, Glennon is definitely a ‘pro-style’ QB. He has all of the tools and is a quick study. And, don’t let him fool you, he is deceptively fast when he tucks it and runs. He’s just not going to lead anyone to believe that he is going one way, and then cut the other.
Sam Jones still looks like he has a lot to learn, but thank God, you can’t teach size. And on that front, I don’t think that TOB will EVER let a D. Morris situation happen here again. Not under his watch. It’s either pick it up, or get to packin’! Besides (and I may have posted this here before) I had a buddy drive by the Murphy Center two weeks ago, and he saw Sam walking to the practice fields. He was ‘scared to get out of the car!’ He said that S. Jones looked like a gigantic version of Mr. T, complete with mohawk and scowl! Give it time, and I think we are going to have a monster on our hands.
The Defense. It looks like the studs from last year’s scout team are stepping up (in practice anyway). I thought that the DB issues and attrition at LB were going to create a learning curve, but instead they seem to have created a head of steam while moving forward. Again, they may look better because of some of the Offense’s shortcomings, but I wouldn’t expect that anyone (other than Irving and possibly Morgan) have any job security behind the line. There has been too much talent waiting in the wings.
I hope this has helped to feed appetites until the Red/White game. I’ve got the cooker all ready to go. I am ready for Saturday, and September can’t get here fast enough! Go Pack!

Go pack had article today. It sounds like Julian Williams hurt his knee – no specifics on the extent of the injury.

Oh yeah – ppack3 – thanks for sharing.

^^^S. Jones is a bouncer at a local music venue known for metal shows. I was up there Saturday for a metal show, and let me tell you, he is scary in person (the Mr. T mohawk is a nice touch). My friend who was there with me said “if he gets in the pit, you want to get out” and I said “if he gets in the pit, i’m running out of the building!”

  8. ppack3 04/13/2009 at 3:31 PM #

That’s hilarious (S. Jones). I think he and Crisp are going to start the trend on our O-line. Those guys will become the norm rather than the exception.
Looks like the News and Disturber is reporting Sid’s interest in a Senior, Point Guard. Not looking good for Wall (and Farnold or Javi for that matter) if Towe is headed down to Florida on the 22nd to look at this kid. Who, BTW is being recruited by the likes of Georgia, and Oklahoma (Chirp, chirp…tumbleweed exit left).

Is NC State just CURSED with the injury bug? I swear, it’s uncanny how many injuries we sustain. I keep telling myself that the law of averages WILL catch up and we’ll have some good luck for a change. But it never seems to happen.

  10. packalum44 04/13/2009 at 3:45 PM #

And I am not sure we did anything except be there at the right time and said yes. When is the last time we got that lucky?

We didn’t get lucky with TOB. Our (the fans) passion and generosity made him interested in our school. Our efforts as fans aren’t totally fruitless. 🙂

We got lucky that Lee didn’t eff it up!

  11. ppack3 04/13/2009 at 3:47 PM #

Depth…depth is what kills us with the injuries! Everyone gets them. Not everyone has to pull their grandmother out of the stands to play middle linebacker when the starter goes down! Now, granted, there have been years that we have had more than our share of injuries at pretty rotten positions on the field, but TOB says %$#@ a curse! If the curse don’t cooperate, it can hit the bricks too! The man.

“Kellie Harper is the new head coach. She had been the head coach at Western Carolina for the past 5 seasons, accumulating a 97-65 record over that time. ”

Lee loves him some Tennessee home cooking. this is “Kelly Jolly” from the mid 90’s tennessee Volunteer teams.

  13. nav 04/13/2009 at 4:45 PM #

^Has this been reported somewhere or is this “inside” knowledge?

  14. GAWolf 04/13/2009 at 4:46 PM #

Reading about Kellie Jolly Harper, I have to say that I like the hire. She has a heck of a resume. And if she’s half as demanding as the special I saw on Pat Summit depicts, we will win with her as our coach.

LF is out Friday. I talked to someone on the BOT and they will give Oblinger the same choice he got for Amato. You do it or we will.

“7 years with Welsh at Navy coaching tackles and tight ends. Went with Welsh to UVa in 1982 for 15 years. Coached OL for about 9 years IIRC and then became OC in his last six.”
    `
This kind of staying at one school as a assistant is unheard of — well almost. Judging from his record and what he has had to say about coming here to coach, we will be set in football for as long as TOB wants to coach. BC really effed up running TOB off IMNSHO. DeFilibrator is one AD we don’t need to replace LF.
    `
Speaking of the AD (and without cursing too) I was reading about Nora Lynn Finch going to the ACC and there was a table listing some of the coaches and other employees in the athletics department and their number of years coaching here. A lot of those dudes and dudettes have been coaching here since before some of you were born. :eyeroll
    `
Richard Sykes has been here for at least 34 years. “Richard, it’s been great having you here at NC State. We owe you a real debt of gratitude for your years of service but you just didn’t win enough ACC championships. As a way of showing our appreciation, we are going to provide you all the help you need cleaning out your desk and office. It’s the least we can do, given you have so many momentos of your time here. Don’t be a stranger. Stop in anytime. We’re not going to let you go empty handed either. Here’s a lifetime pass to play on our new golf course. Too bad it wasn’t built in time to help you recruit.”
    `
Question. Who hires the women coaches? Is it the Senior Associate AD for Women’s sports? I have to wonder if the minor sports coaches have “tenure?” Nora Lynn for all here 31 years here was not mentioned in the search or preparation of plans for a search for a new women’s coach.

So how many wins does the football team need this year to call it a success?

  18. RagingWolf 04/13/2009 at 6:27 PM #

    5 ACC wins

  19. Alpha Wolf 04/13/2009 at 6:27 PM #

“So how many wins does the football team need this year to call it a success?”

8-4, basement. That’s assuming good helth and from the sounds of spring practice, there’s some banged up players that won’t be on the field Saturday.

Quality depth. That’s why it takes so long to build a consistent winner. You have to be at least two deep with good players in every position and some three.

  20. BJD95 04/13/2009 at 6:44 PM #

7-5 or 8-4 would represent solid progress. Think we can do even better.

“LF is out Friday. I talked to someone on the BOT and they will give Oblinger the same choice he got for Amato. You do it or we will.”

So, assuming this is true, who replaces Jed? Purcell? Amato? Cowher? ASU AD?

  22. 61Packer 04/13/2009 at 7:35 PM #

Fouler is out Friday? Will Todd Turner be his replacement?

Anyway, back to the real world. It does indeed look hopeful for football, given that we have 8 home games and were making progress late last season.

  23. choppack1 04/13/2009 at 8:05 PM #

It’s hard to say what will constitute a success for this year. Assuming we don’t have a slew of awful injuries, I’d say 8-4 and 5-3 would be a “success”.

Of course, we could have that record and be disappointed or ecstatic depending on how things turn out. I do think that Wolfpack fans should be optimistic though. This team has the best chance at success we’ve had since 2003. We return some things we haven’t had since then – some solid defensive starters, a successful QB, and some promising OLs.

  24. blpack 04/13/2009 at 8:16 PM #

I’ve got in my head 8-4 as a basement too. 8 home games and I just don’t think our division, though much better than the Coastal, is loaded with BCS teams. Win our share of home games and then find a way to win 4 challenging games on the road. We can get this done. We have to stay healthy, get some breaks and make plays. The biggest thing for this team may be starting off 1-0.

  25. Greywolf 04/13/2009 at 8:49 PM #

Out Friday? Will it be announced Friday, 3 days before the ALS Association Charity golf tournament? I guess it really won’t matter. The checks are already in, etc. Maybe Chairman of the BOT will step up and host.
    `
Will the BOT have his replacement ready to step in right away? We busted LF’s chops enough for not having “plans” for coaching changes.
    `
I’d laugh my ass off if Obie grew a set of cahones and told the BOT, “I’m not firing him, go ahead and do it yourself.” I just don’t see that bunch of wusses doing it. If they do, wouldn’t it be a hoot for the BOG to intercede and say, “Hold on there boys, you may have overstepped your boundaries. WE like LF being the AD in Raleigh. Heh, heh, heh.”
    `
Will we have business as usual at UNC at Raleigh? UNC-R is the way the Board of Governors would really like for it to be — and would be were it not for the shit storm when it was first proposed. Too young to remember? It was scary for us older folk, I can tell you that.
    `
I can hardly wait for the circus to come to town. INO No sane, self-respecting, successful AD capable of running the show here, would come to NCSU for the dog’s dinner salary we pay. We wouldn’t have a football coach or men’s basketball coach if those guys had the controls on them the AD has. I can see it now. “Mr. AD, Sir, I’m thinking about putting in full time, full court pressure. You know basketball, what do you think about that?”
“I don’t know Dex, I think the boys would have to work too hard if we did that and their parents would complain like they did about ole Matt over at the flagship campus. Dexter! Poindexter!! Come back here. Where are you going?”
