Second Half Offensive Meltdown Dooms Pack

Stop me if you heard this one before – but after building a solid first half lead, the Wolfpack offense goes into a coma for the entire second half, losing 72-64. At least it was just shitty and braindead play, not effort (unlike the Maryland game).

State will be seeded 10th, and square off against Maryland unless VT wins tomorrow and the Terps lose later today. For the rest of the weekend, here’s what you should want as an NC State fan:

1) Maryland to beat Virginia. If the Cavs win, you are looking at 3 ACC teams projected to fall into the NIT (Maryland, Miami, Virginia Tech) ahead of NC State. Although there is no hard and fast rule, the only reason I saw for leaving Wake out of the NIT last year was that 3 ACC teams were already in the field.

2) UNC to beat Duke. From a “hoping for a miracle” matchup standpoint, we need to avoid UNC for as long as humanly possible. Perhaps someone else (I’m thinking FSU) can beat them for us.

3) Wake to beat Clemson. Coupled with a Duke loss, this would put the Deacs in the #2 slot, and Wake is by far NC State’s best possible Friday matchup.

I can’t believe they got such a good shot off full court with only 2.8 seconds left … Well designed play, but a great block to send it to double overtime.

    Great game.

If the unstable officiating was equal opportunity screwing, you could just shake your head and move along. But it’s not; not even remotely. In the “Foul Shots” today in the N&O, there was a small section to “prove” that each team get’s screwed by officiating. Duke’s example was a missed rebounding foul on Henderson late in the Wake game that was ultimately lost on a bad defense at the buzzer, Carolina’s (hillariously) was that Hansblow actually got called for a questionable fourth foul in a game they won, and ours was the crazy flagrant at VaT that started a multiple point reversal where the game was tied at the end of regulation. We probably have multiple calls every game that are more rediculous than anything either of those teams see all year.

But it’s not just Duke and Carolina. We are easy pickings whomever and wherever we play and Sid seems powerless to deal with it. I don’t necessarily want a raving idiot like Greenburg, but he doesn’t get referreed out of games against equal or lesser quality. The best we can ever hope for is an even game (home or away) and those are few and far between. I’m not blaming our ills on officiating, but a string of questionable calls at strategic times (say like @VaT and @WFU recently) can really impact a fragile team. I don’t recall (be my guest and help me remember) when we get such favors in return.

In my eyes, the inability to reasonably control the officiated flow of the game was one of Herb’s major downfalls. I don’t see Sid being one damn bit better, maybe worse. At times I want to see him throw a chair (figuratively speaking), but he just stands by and gives some goofy ass quizical look as his team is getting raped. I can’t imagine what it will take for that situation to change, but it surely makes a difference and it’s not an across the board issue.

Their ACC regular record is EXACTLY the same three years into their respective at NC State. We need to win 2 games in the tournament so Sid can at least equal HWSBN’s overall ACC record in the first 3 years.

    Wolfpack Nation,

I wanted to start off by saying that I am frustrated as much as every other NC State die hard fan is as well. Nothing justifies losing , I want to win as bad as anyone else does. In saying the above statement I feel it would be terribly wrong to not give Sidney Lowe the proper credit that he deserves this year. Earlier in the season if you would have told me that we would win 6 games in the ACC I would have laughed and put my house up on that but he did have a much better 2nd half to the year.
I am not making excuses or saying that 6-10 is acceptable because it is not !! What I am saying is Sidney has taken 3 years to develop mentally as a college basketball coach and he has coached well down the stretch and is very smart at calling sets and taking other teams out of their offense at times. What Sidney is installing is a tough in your face full court man to man with athletic guards and guys who can flat out beat you off the dribble not have to depend on running everything inside out. What we are forced to do is run everything through our big men and when they are not playing well our offense suffers.

Sidney Lowe has not had the available athletes to 100% run his type of system that he has started to trasfer into our team this year. He has done alot with very little as far as athletes. Our defense suffers at times because we have a 6’7 power forward playing small forward in Brandon Costner who simply is not athletic just a good spot up shooter. Our point guards even though Javi has stepped up with ALOT of heart these past 3 weeks is simply not a starting PG in the ACC.

We have a SOLID core coming in next year and we are weaving out the non athletic guys who simply are meant to play a princeton system like Ben,Courtney,Brandon. Lorenzo Brown is a very very good basketball player who will start and contribute from day 1 he has amazing speed and can beat you off the dribble anytime. He has a jump shot and more importantly he is a solid defender and scorer. Scott Wood is very UNDERRATED and will be very solid from day 1 because he can flat out shoot the basketball. I am not talking about a streaky shooter like Horner or Ferguson I am talking about simply can put the basketball in the hole from not only the 3 point line but is solid in traffic and can shoot the mid range jumped and can get to the rim with ease and is a great free throw shooter. Richard Howell is a 2nd coming of Tracy Smith but he is even more athletic and can defend and block shots in which Tracy is limited in. Richard Howell is very athletic long and has a mean streak in him around the basket he will rebound well and score he is a finisher!! Those 3 will be the best set of 3 that we have had come into this program in a very long time… if so happens we could pull John Wall or DeMarcus Cousins or hell both we would be NCAA Contenders next year from day 1. John Wall has it down to NC State or Memphis and I feel he will choose NC State because of his mom and also because he knows we need a true point guard and he will get the recognition and the television time here. Lastly John Wall will choose NC State because he has NBA on his mind and with Sidney here he knows Sidney has people in the NBA to where he can give John the best information about his chances and all of the inside information and Sidney had JJ Hickson and he is succeding quickly in the NBA.

Demarcus Cousins has narrowed his search down to 4 schools and NC State is 1 of them. I feel he is leaning towards NC State because he is looking for a father figure type HC to help him develop mentally and Sidney Lowe would be that for him. DeMarcus will be a 2 year college player not 1 because he needs to develop mentally and also his stamina. Sidney Lowe would be a great coach for him because he can teach him how to carry himself as a human being and how to work hard to succeed.

I know I will get some hate on this long letter I have wrote to all of my state fans but I am just trying to be honest and I am a sportswriter in Tarboro area so I had alot of insight. Sidney Lowe has not done nothing compared to what is coming in the next 5 years. We will be back in the NCAA Tournament next year and I feel we will compete with all acc teams for the future because Sidney Lowe is getting the correct type of guys to win in the ACC and transfer this team from a slow tempo set team who HAS to hold teams under 70 pts to have a chance to a upbeat team who will avg over 85 a game and will be hard to defend. If you ever notice UNC has the most trouble with athletic guards and the reason we can’t match up with those guys is because of the fact that we are very non-athletic in the guards or honestly in any position.

If we can all just swallow the season root our guys on in the ACC Tourney because I believe we can make a run to the championship of the ACC if we can get Courtney back healthy for depth reasons and to defend then we can beat MD , Wake, Duke,or whoever we have to go through to get to Sunday and we can just hope athletic FSU or someone can knock out the TarHeels so that we can make a miracle run. I am going to leave this post with the following quote from the late Jimmy Valvano

“Never give up! Failure and rejection are only the first step to succeeding.”

TJEVERETTE1984 – hope you are right

  16. choppack1 03/08/2009 at 4:41 AM #

TJ – I hope you are right.I’ve definitely seen improvement from our staff this year -but the facts thus far are pretty damning. Like I said, his record is currently equal to the man he replaced after 3 years. We were concerned w/ his start and I’m concerned w/ Sid’s start.

Don’t worry – Sid will have at least next year. However, w/ everything we lose, I’ll be shocked if we make the tournament next year. If we do, Sid will have done a great job.

  17. Wolfpack_1995 03/08/2009 at 7:09 AM #

Hope you are right TJ also. I think we end up in the College Basketball Invitational this year.

I love the optimism from TJEverette!

One point about our offensive meltdowns. If you notice almost all of them occur in the 2nd half of games. And this isn’t unique to Sid’s teams. Herb’s teams were masters of the 2nd half meltdown. I think that has a lot to do with the defense that other teams play against us. In the first half teams tend to come out a bit passive and soft. In the 2nd half, whether it is due to defensive adjustments or just playing harder teams tend to play much better defense.

So why don’t other teams have offensive meltdowns? Because they have players that can create with the ball. Our offense has been better than everage against soft man and passive zone defenses for the last 7-8 years. That’s because we have guys that can knock down open shots at a lot of positions, and we have a lot of guys that are good passers.

I’ve been on the fence about John Wall but this is ultimately why I do want him to come here. Coupled with a finisher like Tracy Smith and maybe Richard Howell, I think he would go a long way toward ending 10 minute scoring droughts.

  20. choppack1 03/08/2009 at 8:21 AM #

Here’s something to think about w/ Wall. On a team w/ the No 1 player in the country, another highly rated one for next year and at least 1 or 2 other D1 scholarship recipients – what was their record for the 2009 year?

  21. 61Packer 03/08/2009 at 8:35 AM #

    Dear TJ,

Thank you for your long and kind letter. I especially liked the part where you said that if we can just all swallow the season and get Fells back, we’ll make a strong run for the ACC championship.

Coach Lowe is indeed building the kind of defense that wins championships, and is recruiting the kind of players we need to accomplish that, like JJ Hickson. Like you, his mom and I can’t imagine why John Wall would not see that and go somewhere else, like Duke, Memphis or Baylor, of all places. With Wall, Cousins and the SOLID core of players we will have coming in the next 5 years, the future under Coach Lowe looks bright for Wolfpack basketball.

It is sad indeed that some of our lunatic fringe fans still refuse to give Coach Lowe the proper credit he deserves this season for the remarkable turnaround we’ve had over last season. His overall ACC record shows that Wolfpack basketball is back and cannot be taken lightly any longer by the Virginias and Georgia Techs of the world.

See you in Atlanta next Sunday!

    Sincerely,
    Jed

Point guard woes are certainly a problem for the pack. But, even if we get a serviceable point guard rotation next year, who will they dish the ball to besides Tracy Smith.

We will have serious front court issues next year. With so many new faces, I am afraid that next year will be another “learning experience” for everyone. How many more years of “learning experiences” can we have without killing the program entirely?

We have seen some improvement this year. But remember that last year is the benchmark we are using for comparison. Last year was an unmitigated disaster. So winning 2 more league games constitutes improvement?

We can only hope that the departure of certain players will result in less loafing and taking time off during games. It still looks like to me that some undercurrent exists on this team. These guys just have not played as hard as they did two years ago. Something is going on we don’t know about.

At any rate, WTNY is getting mighty damn old for this 79 graduate. Twenty plus years of it leaves a hollow feeling in your gut.

  23. redfred2 03/08/2009 at 9:56 AM #

    …and the beat goes on.

I thought it was you guys who were begging all of us to stop bringing up Herb Sendek???

Now, in every other post, there is a comparison to Herb’s first three season’s at NC State. On top of that there is no mention of the fact that Sidney is trying to install a more competitive system/philosophy while still having to depend heavily on a nucleous of players that were recruited to play in an entirely different format.

Since there is so much discussion about trying to be like Herb, let me ask you this, right here at the end of year three, does anyone feel that we have any more or less of a chance in the ACCT then we did in the LATE years with “you know who” at the helm?

With everything that has and hasn’t happened this season, I feel our chances in the ACCT are still on equal footing with anything that we had to look forward to at the END of that entire decade of coaching.

  24. wolfpackbball 03/08/2009 at 10:00 AM #

    TJ +1

Don’t think anybody saw more than 6-7 wins coming this year if they were realistic. Sid is no longer behind the 8 ball in recruiting like he was his first year and a half, so I do expect him to continue to recruit high quality players. I think the train is rolling in the right direction, now to pick up a little speed and build on improvement.

I would like to hear some analysis of how we can win more league games next year.
