NCAAT Saturday Round of 32 Open Thread (Geaux Tigers!)

Great games late last night – in terms of excitement. Not so great for the ACC, as Wake and BC got demolished and Florida State (much like Clemson) played half asleep for most of the game, and paid the price. 3-4 in the First Round for the “mighty” ACC – with 2 of the 3 wins against Radford and Binghamton. Gruesome stuff.

Your stat of the day is zero – the number of teams that NC State beat whose seasons are still alive today.

Back to ACC suckage – Miami got blown out at Florida last night, and Baylor demolished the Hokies in Blacksburg today. Even in the NIT, the league couldn’t do squat.

Challenge for the SFN community – come up with some bed shitting collapses to rival that of Wake Forest, who spent most of the year in the Top Ten, but got spanked in the first round of both the ACCT and NCAAT. The best I could come up with NC State in 1989 losing to a 1-13 Maryland team in the ACCT quarters. But that team rebounded to make the Sweet Sixteen before getting screwed on a bogus travelling call against Georgetown. So, I think Wake still wins.

I’m watching delayed, so my comment was about an hour late.
It was at about 16:00 in the first half… oh well.

I refuse to watch anymore of the Duke game. Pisses me off too much.

Fred, I’m still wondering if your earlier comment was directed at me. I am genuinely curious.

NJpack: I don’t think I like your tone about Kenny Inge. He has connections at the next level that matters to recruits. In his first year there were some bad apples; he just needs to get his own guys in there, and a “run the show” type of point guard.

I think Texas should fire Rick B.

Letting HWSNBN leave and not matching ASU’s offer was not a mistake. The subsequent coaching search by Jed was a cluster****! I agree with the prior comment that HWSNBN and NCSU both needed fresh starts–HWSNBN made more of his opportunity than we did. Why can’t the media understand this and just leave it alone. I can only hope that someone with some stones on the BOT will realize that the NY Times has called out our athletic director and administration as inept and challenge his/her contemporaries to do something about it. Probably just dreaming but I’ll still hope!

Fred: “Ok alpha, I just checked back up there to read your response to my post. Fair enough. Mark that up as another really, CHEAP shot by THE artist around here, that gets totally implanted into everyone’s brains without any resistance. “

    Sweet Jumper,

Not having three names of coaches that we could easily get was the mistake, not letting Herb go. The atmosphere here had gotten toxic and everyone needed a change. The coaching search couldn’t have been any worse if the Abbott and Costello had been the search committee.

How can anyone like DUKE???? I know the refs do. How did James get the foul with 47 secs left after Henderson’s miss?? He had position and if anything Zoubek was over his back. Or the foul on Johnson with 11.5 secs left. James had position, and it was a bogus call. The other (Johnson’s) was not a push, it was two guys going for the ball. I think Duke players take acting class 1st semester Freshman year. Another 2 examples of the refs getting the chance to decide the game in the last minute. Duke had missed the shot, and both times, it would have given Texas a chance to tie or take the lead…..but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, there’s a FOUL.

You would know the only two games all day are the last two games.

If you want to see an up-and-coming coach, check out the young coach for WKU, Ken McDonald. I see him coaching at a major w/in 5 years. Just my opinion though.

too many of you would eat your young. Couple of thoughts. Sendek is an OK coach, we have the right to want a better program same as UNC letting the national coach of the year go! But remember we didn’t fire Sendek, he left on his own. We happy, he happy! End of Story!

Todays Game involving UNC was a refreshing fairly officiated game to watch. The better team won, but the officials called a fair game. Hand Checking, traveling calls, over the back, and an offensive player jumping into a defensive player was not called as a foul, as it should be! Damn refreshing!

I hope the ACC schools and their leaders were watching today. Leading the conference back to the top involves changing the face of our conference and that begins with the way our conference officiates the games. We got to get big men to want to come to the ACC and we have to change the way our officials call the game in order to do that.

Too many ACC teams stand around compared to the energy that I have seen from teams in the tournament. The well coached teams play with energy and a purpose. Our team looks like a bunch of grannys combared to what I have seen the last three days.

I know I am new to all this here at StateFans so I feel the need to say one thing. Living in the middle of all the people who jump on the UNC/Duke bandwagon, it is amazing to see that there are really passionate and loyal NCSU fans like myself out there.

Alpha, I did not say letting HWSNBN go was a mistake. I just want to be clear on that. The coaching search by Jed was the mistake, not refusing to match ASU’s offer. I think that’s what my last post said. Sorry if I wasn’t clear.

I was saying that about the person who was/always is, IMPLYING some kind of UNFOUNDED, overtly negative, something in regards to Sidney Lowe.

I wasn’t implying anything. I was directly repeating that which I’ve heard from someone who has a sterling record on these things.

Listen…I *get* that Sidney Lowe is your boyfriend. I just don’t give a crap.

You’re like one of those people in the middle ages who walked around flogging themselves and telling everyone that the plague was god’s punishment for man’s wickedness.

No. James Oblinger is not the reason that we SUCK. Lee Fowler isn’t even the direct reason for it.

It’s the rat with fleas. That’s it. There is no grand conspiracy. The UNC Board of Governors doesn’t give two shits about NC State’s basketball team.

We just have a terrible coach.

If we hire a GOOD coach, that record will improve.

    STOP.

  22. Wolfpack_1995 03/22/2009 at 10:48 AM #

Can we hire Sean Miller Please!

  23. TheCOWDOG 03/22/2009 at 11:24 AM #

    ” It’s the rat with fleas. ”

And who’s ignorance allowed the infestation around Raleigh? The serfs? Or the lords?

I contend the sanctimonious, aloof lords, as in the days of yore.

  24. Greywolf 03/22/2009 at 11:28 AM #

“No. James Oblinger is not the reason that we SUCK. Lee Fowler isn’t even the direct reason for it. It’s the rat with fleas. That’s it. There is no grand conspiracy. Our BOT wants to win another NC — with a coach being paid perhaps a little more than tenured professors but less than the Chancellor. It’s ironic that we share an arena with the Carolina Hurricanes, who are expected to win another Stanley Cup with a self-imposed salary cap that keeps the Canes about one superstar short of having that happening — unless we can get enough reclamation projects to turn out to compensate for not having the money to sign a sure thing. Our AD is operating with an imposed salary cap that has NCSU rely on hiring coaches that are less than the “sure thing” our sister university hires. Like Roy Williams or Butch Davis or their baseball coach or …

“If we hire a GOOD coach, that record will improve.” True enough, but how will we know? Everett Case, prior to coming to North Carolina State College, was a high school coach but certainly not a sure thing. Jimmy Valvano owned a college, (at least I heard him say, “I on a College.”) not unlike Herb Sendek. Was Valvano a sure thing? Earl Edwards was an assistant at Penn State without head coach experience like Chuck Amato. Lou Holtz coached at the College of William and Mary, not unlike Tom Reed, and was not a sure thing. I’m sure that NCSU has hired a “sure thing” in the past — TOB is as close to a sure thing as I can remember — but the nearest to a sure thing that we come to is hiring a Mid-major coach who beat us in a particular sport. And please remember that Reed, Kiffin, etc., men who were fired after 3 years, came when the AD had the power to hire and fire — before institutional controls hand-cuffed the AD.
    `
If it was as simple as saying “Hire a GOOD coach,” EVERY member of the NCAA would field a championship team.
    `
Sidney Lowe was a good gamble. He had passion for NCSU, he came highly recommended by his bosses, he had coaching experience in the pro’s if not in college, he hired experienced assistants, he has the ethics, and gentlemanly manner required at NCSU. Unfortunately he has a fan base that undermines his efforts with public ridicule of him, his staff, the athletic department, and the Athletic Director, the Chancellor, the Board of Governors and the University.
    `
The only game NCSU can currently claim to be a champion in is, “Can you top this?” as we daily invent new ways to piss on the coach, the athletic department, and the Athletic Director, the Chancellor, the Board of Governors. The Ununiversity we claim to love is covered and stained with the splatter.
    `
    Let the righteous replies begin.
