Updated “State of the Program” Thoughts

wilee

OK, dark side – you win. Last night’s disastrous effort pushed me over the edge. Taking a cue from Sidney Lowe’s motivational techniques and substitution patterns, I will not order my thoughts logically and just throw crap against the wall to see what sticks:

– Sidney Lowe has clearly lost this team, for the second year in a row. That’s completely unacceptable, and could be a program destroyer.

– Sidney Lowe not only put a shell-shocked Javi Gonzalez into a tie game cold midway through the second half, but also did so without a secondary ballhandler on the court with him. Gee, who could have predicted three straight turnovers (though somehow the boxscore only lists two) in that situation? I was mildly surprised that no crazed fans charged the court to set themselves on fire in protest.

– Julius Mays kept State in the game during the second half, but don’t read too much into it. Against a more disciplined opponent, he won’t be able to run around for 30 seconds, then get an open lane or pull-up jumper. And he still finished the game with no assists.

– The “effort” lineup that worked against FSU for about 10 minutes in the second half will not be able to stand against better competition. Even against the Noles, it was weak defensively and on the glass.

– By the “consecutive ACC losses” measure, Sidney Lowe is now the losingest coach in NC State history (hat tip, SFN commenters)! That’s saying alot from an institution that once employed Les Robinson for six long years. Congratulations, Coach!

– I’ve said this many times privately, and nobody has ever contradicted it – the only staff member that seems to have any clue about “nuts and bolts” college coaching is #3 assistant Pete Strickland. That’s just pathetic.

– When Lowe was hired, I told numerous friends that the great thing was that “limbo hell” was over – Sid would likely be a smashing success, or an abject failure. Looks like I was right.

– Fellow Hindenburg program Georgia Tech comes to town on Saturday. One team has to win, the other starts worrying about a Bob Wade-like season. State would actually be lucky if the crowd is small – otherwise, the ESA will be full of very angry people.

– I watched last night’s game late on DVR (my wife and kids claimed the HDTV that was recording the game for that awful American Idol show). I sent an e-mail to fellow SFN bloggers with about 9:30 to go and State down 1, saying that even if State comes back to win, this was one of the most poorly coached games I had ever seen. I apologize for not being there live with you on the blog – misery loves company.

– Want to feel even worse? In bad economic times, I think it’s fair to assume that the purse strings of the big money donors are much tighter. I’m not sure the money is there to chase off Fowler and Lowe, much less to throw money at a decent coach for what looks like a very major rebuilding job. Thus, I don’t see any rational reason to have so much as a scintilla of hope.

“Didn’t Sendek resign on April Fools Day?”

    ^I think that’s right, Noah 🙂

And Capel Sr. did have some very good years at ODU, but like you can’t quite recall who that big upset came against – though G’Town sounds right

I’d buy Capel’s stock, but am also interested in seeing what happens once the Griffins leave (assuming Capel is still there)

^^^Other than Hodge, I can’t think of a top recruit who lived up to billing.

J.J. Hickson — only thing is, he was TOO good.

WTNY – our starting lineup will be: Wall, Brown, Wood, Smith, Cousins.

Ga. Tech will be a very telling game. Sid needs another year or two, but he has to “coach” what he’s got this year.

Oh yeah, Capel probably has the Nat’l POY on his team (Griffin). Coaches love to have POY’s or even All-conference caliber players. We’ll be lucky if we have a 3rd team All-ACC player…think about it. Let Coach Lowe bring in Wall and Favors/Cousins with next year’s class, and we will see some changes. If he does not get those two, it will be tough, but not impossible.

Someone answer the question: “This is the ACC. You look down the list of rosters in the ACC and show me another starting PG worse than our best PG AND over the last 3 years.”

I think we all know the answer. Don’t over-analyze it.

Most of you know that over the course of the last four weeks I’ve plastered this site with damn near everything I knew about athletic competion and used it to evolve a picture of what was happening on the court with this team, again. And again and again….ad nauseum.

I can’t bare to belabour my takes on those I’ve come to refer to as the 3 any more than you’d care to read it again. As far back as Davidson, I started to see something or thought I saw something in Lowe’s substitution patterns. I believe he instituted the “Red” team because of the inevitable. Study someone he could count on while phasing out the 3.

Judging by the takes after this recent debacle, more than half of us and curiously many outsiders, have now seen enough of our upperclassmen’s act. Good, you’re paying attention. However, I don’t see where and why there are folks ready to ship Lowe out, other than YING and YANG or PUSHME-PULLME or EQUAL but OPPOSITE.

I’m big on recycling bottles, cans, and players not HEAD coaches.
Assistants, that’s a completely different consumable.
Fowler? I’ve got what is going to be construed as an unpopular opinion. I’ll just ask the question…Who does he work for?

I am one of those fans that pays $500+ for each season ticket. My family has lost interest in going. The OOC schedule sucks and so the season boils down to 8 ACC home games and 2 decent OOC games. Just not worth the cash.

Unfortunately, Sid has very little talent on the team. No one could even remotely come close to starting for 8+ other ACC teams. That is a significant statement.

However, it is clear we don’t have much thinking power in the coaches we have. How they could have recruited Javi is beyond me. A slow short PG when there are plenty of fast even super quick short PGs out there. Our brilliant coaches brought in Degand, Johnson (since departed).

Plus they can’t teach our players how to play. Sid should have been told last year to fire 1-2 assistants and bring in someone that can evaluate talent and help coach the team.

What is nervewracking is watching Sid wave his arms and shift around on the sideline like he is trying to play or point out what the players should be doing. However, the players aren’t looking at him and it comes across really silly for this continuous motion for 40 minutes. It simply isn’t effetive at all.

Lee should be fired this year and a new AD try to raise up our sports program.

Gonzales or Fergy should not play another minute this year. Sidney has no players and unfortunately is not a good enough coach to make filet mignon out of stale hamburger.

Sid lowe doesn’t put us in the best possible position to win games….this far into his college coaching career he should be able to do this..atleast better than what he is doing now…

I said at the end of last year that we were in for more of the same this year. My reasoning was that all the factors that contributed to last years debacle were going to be present this year. Now just a few games into this season we have the same old schydt piling up. I don’t know what goes on in practice but i would guess it has little to do with the fundamentals of basketball. I have coached 6th and 7th grades the have more basketball insticts than any of our starting five! I’m not joking about this. Our guys are painful to watch!! The same mistakes every game, where the coaching? if they are being coached and not absorbing and using that knowledge in games, SIT THEIR ASS!! I can’t watch anymore it’s just more than i can bear!!

I actually turned down free tickets to see the Pack in Cameron Indoor. This team is tough to watch and it all boils down to coaching.

Quote from Noah “The cure is going to suck. It starts with turning in your LTRs and walking away. Seriously, you want to shake things up? Get a couple of thousand people to hand in the LTRs that they paid a lot for and say, “That’s it. I’m out.” ”

You’ll see a change very quickly.

Bingo! I have been saying this for a long time. Money drives the athletic program and when it dries up then changes will be made. LTR was a pretty package designed to get you to support the university for a very long time no matter what happens during competition. I feel sorry for those that spend their hard earned money to watch the last 11 ACC games.
