NC State 27, Duke 17

Some quick thoughts and “good news” items:

– NC State WRs really stepped it up today. Jarvis Williams made 2 excellent “jumpball” catches on deep throws. Anthony Hill made a SportsCenter caliber catch on 3rd and long, setting up his TD catch on the next play. Darrell Davis made a nice catch on the sideline setting up the FG that iced the game.

– Russell Wilson made plays with his legs and arm. He’s getting better at using his mobility to buy time for receivers to break open, rather than always choosing to tuck and run. You may consider this heresy, but I believe he’s playing better and smarter than Philip Rivers in his freshman year (of course, he didn’t have the luxury of a redshirt).

– Mike Archer gets the last laugh (for once) regarding “bend but don’t break.” Today, it worked to perfection. The defense made big plays when it had to, ending drives at the State 10, 1, and 11.

– NC State provided about 30% of stadium capacity today. One hell of a showing for a team that was 2-6 (0-4) entering the game. Great volume on the WOLF-PACK cheer several times. Unlike the Devil boosters, our folks mostly stayed to the end, and gave the team a noce standing ovation at the end. The kids really seemed to appreciate it. “Bad fans,” my hairy ass!

– NC State will not go winless in ACC play.

– NC State will not lose 10 games in a season for the first time.

– NC State is 2-0 vs. NC’s other Division 1-A teams. Wake and the Holes are up next. 4-0 is a goal to play for.

Duke Notes:

– David Cutcliffe may be a good program builder, but he doesn’t know what he’s doing, strategically. Even after a false start penalty made it 4th and 8 from the State 18 (down 17 with 5 minutes to go), Cutcliffe passes up a very makeable field goal and turns the ball over on downs, effectively ending the game. Had Duke made it a 2 possession game, they only needed one onside kick to have a shot at OT (they had 3 timeouts left).

– The Duke campus is wholly unsuited (logistically) to host any kind of event. Traffic police sent us around in a long circle without passing one single parking lot or deck open to the public. Good thing we were an hour early.

– Calling Wallace Wade a podunk town high school stadium is an insult to podunk high schools everywhere.

    Guys,

Please keep the stories from your youth comin’! It’s awesome to imagine NCSU at the time you were attending. I’ve spent many a day thinking about my Grandfather’s time at NCSU. This was even further back…. not certain of the years he attended, I need to check on that. He didn’t graduate, as he had to return home to help run the family business (hog farming, and eventually a mill (river valley brand cornmeal)). But times must have been unbelievably different. My father attended campbell, and appalachian (masters), but my mother did attend meredith. I grew up in RAleigh, and spent a great deal of time on campus during my youth…. especially if you pretend that carter finley is a part of campus on saturdays. I attended, and graduated in 2000, or aught aught as I like to refer to it. I’m one of the guys that wears ncsu gear that refers to the academics instead of just athletics. Even though I graduated from lowly CHASS, I was lucky enough to have about 6, maybe 7 professors that changed my life. I was magnetically drawn to a lot of hidden conservatives! I have gone on to do pretty well, after a divergence into somewhat unsuccessful endeavors after the dotcom meltdown.

Again, LOVE the stories about our great university!!!!!

Uh oh, it appears that Greywolf and Coach Fowler have a little more in common than I was led to believe.

“Roger Moore was the fullback. Also punted and played some Linebacker.”

Yeah, I think I remember hearing about him. As the QB, didn’t he wear the number 007? Ran a lot of fancy gadget plays and stuff like that. Heard he had a way with ladies off of the field too.

I’m just kidding. I’m with surfingwolf, I love reading about that kind of stuff. I was around then, but I can’t remember back that far. I do remember hearing some of those names though, Roman Gabriel of course, but even some of the others.

Jim Rossi was the QB!! Gosh, that might have been the easiest one. Little Joe Scarpatti(sp?) was the only one who played in the NFL though(as far as I know). Played defensive back for the Eagles.

Ron W? I know who you are talking about, but will have to look up the name. Rossi was the starting QB in the fall of 63, but the other fellow did play some.

There was a lot of Italian/Pennsylvania connections on that team and prior to. Rosario Amato, Chuck’s older brother, was a junior or senior that year. I used to play and ref some of the IM BBall game in the “open league” so I met some of them doing the same. We were playing one of the football team groups one night and Scarpatti and I got hung up and I ended up on the floor and then Don Montgomery, one of the ends, fell on top of me with my arm under me. Didn’t break it, but it took a couple of days before I could move it again.

Highstick, nobody but us is reading this thread LOL Roman busted my ass a few times in Frank Thompson gym. That place had the smell of a gym you can’t get today. Wasn’t bad, just had a unique odor. The aroma of Atomic Bomb or something like that.

BTW I was almost positive Roman played in the 63 season.

I used to hang with some big ass tackle from PA (best I remember) named Maravich or something like that. I can see faces but the names just escape me.

I was taking LifeSaving with a great swimmer named Pete Fogarosy(SP). I had him in a “death grip” which the instructor was teaching us how to get out of. Pete grabbed me by the balls and I let go quicker than a cat could like his ass. I considered it to be the “universal” escape move. Used it more than once. Nobody ever complained. Wasn’t that the smallest pool in the country?

Hmmm, I don’t know, and I can’t speak for surfingwolf, but about these stories, they seem to be lacking a little of the grandeur that I was expecting from that time period. 🙂

Gabe was there the 62-63 season, Rossi was the 63-64, but remember football starts in the fall. Donnan and I were in the same freshman class.

Fred, when you get this old, you feel good that you can remember anything!!

Another bit of trivia, Nellie Cooper, long time ACC official was my soccer PE instructor. Had Art Hoch for several PE courses(Scott’s Dad who had glasses thicker than coke bottles).

Honestly don’t think I ever went in Frank Thompson gym unless it was something during freshman orientation week. Carmichael was there my freshman year and had an 8 o’clock swimming class during the second half of the fall semester, then had to hoof it with wet hair to Harrellson or Winston. Either way, we didn’t have hair dryers and it was cold “back then” before global warming.

    You still in Raleigh?

  8. Greywolf 11/14/2008 at 11:44 AM #

    I’m Phil, not Fred. 😉
And yes I remember Nellie Cooper but not as well as Art. I just happened to get in a foursome with Art last spring at Wildwood. We rode together and talked about Scott, the old days and of course getting old ourselves. Art still teed ’em up on the men’s tees. Me too. I might play the “old folks tees” in the Club Championships but not when I play other times.

You missed an experience not playing in Old Frank Thompsom Gym. LOL

I’m live in Raleigh in Wildwood Green, the poor man’s golf club. My email is [email protected]. Shoot me a line.

I also sit in Section 216, Row R, Seats 13 and 14. If you go to the games, look me up. Roger goes as my “date.” What I mean is my wife gives up her seat to Roger. We have a blast with the game and keeping an eye on the dance team down below. 😉
