NC State 27, Duke 17

Some quick thoughts and “good news” items:

– NC State WRs really stepped it up today. Jarvis Williams made 2 excellent “jumpball” catches on deep throws. Anthony Hill made a SportsCenter caliber catch on 3rd and long, setting up his TD catch on the next play. Darrell Davis made a nice catch on the sideline setting up the FG that iced the game.

– Russell Wilson made plays with his legs and arm. He’s getting better at using his mobility to buy time for receivers to break open, rather than always choosing to tuck and run. You may consider this heresy, but I believe he’s playing better and smarter than Philip Rivers in his freshman year (of course, he didn’t have the luxury of a redshirt).

– Mike Archer gets the last laugh (for once) regarding “bend but don’t break.” Today, it worked to perfection. The defense made big plays when it had to, ending drives at the State 10, 1, and 11.

– NC State provided about 30% of stadium capacity today. One hell of a showing for a team that was 2-6 (0-4) entering the game. Great volume on the WOLF-PACK cheer several times. Unlike the Devil boosters, our folks mostly stayed to the end, and gave the team a noce standing ovation at the end. The kids really seemed to appreciate it. “Bad fans,” my hairy ass!

– NC State will not go winless in ACC play.

– NC State will not lose 10 games in a season for the first time.

– NC State is 2-0 vs. NC’s other Division 1-A teams. Wake and the Holes are up next. 4-0 is a goal to play for.

Duke Notes:

– David Cutcliffe may be a good program builder, but he doesn’t know what he’s doing, strategically. Even after a false start penalty made it 4th and 8 from the State 18 (down 17 with 5 minutes to go), Cutcliffe passes up a very makeable field goal and turns the ball over on downs, effectively ending the game. Had Duke made it a 2 possession game, they only needed one onside kick to have a shot at OT (they had 3 timeouts left).

– The Duke campus is wholly unsuited (logistically) to host any kind of event. Traffic police sent us around in a long circle without passing one single parking lot or deck open to the public. Good thing we were an hour early.

– Calling Wallace Wade a podunk town high school stadium is an insult to podunk high schools everywhere.

Just got back from the game – I really can’t believe that for all the bookoos of private money that Duke has – that they have neglected Wallace Wade for so long. My friend’s 10 year old son wore his crocks into the mens room and ended up in a flood of god-knows-what.

Bend but don’t break did indeed work today – but boy, we’ve got to work on the screen. Duke ate us alive with essentially the same play that S. Florida did.

    R. Wilson is growing game by game, I REALLY liked his play today. Interestingly enough – a friend was telling me about a conversation he had with one of State’s assistant football coaches. My friend said to the coach that Glennon would have to be special to put the heat on Wilson for next year. Without missing a beat, the coach said – “Glennon IS special.” Which is farther than coaches typically go with such comments. Take that FWIW.

First time to Wallace Wade… had a great time tailgating and would definitely go back. Nice home game away from home. Certainly not a hostile environment.

Great win, now let’s get these next 3 to cap the regular season. Go Pack!

Jeez, they’ve still got those concrete urinals that they had in the 60’s(or earlier)! How disgusting!

4-0 against the NC opponents! Go get’um guys!!! Pack UP?????

Great win! Step one to the NC championship accomplished.

    Great win Pack!
Wallace Wade is a relic. that was state of the art for the 1929! All the other stadiums of its era are torn down or buried under huge additions.
Nice to beat dook the first time back. I was worried yesterday.
Going 4-0 in the state would make my season!
Well, that and Ole Miss beating LSU and going to the Cotton.

The tailgating was humorous at best. Maybe it was the 6 dudes (typical State stylee) that we were tailgating with, but all the dookies seemed to shy away from eye contact and seemed fearful. The stadium may have only had 30% red, but the tailgate was more in the ballpark of 60% red. Nice win, doesn’t really mean anything to the rest of the games. The only translation I can see coming from this game to any of the others would be Russel Wilson’s growth. The kid makes really good decisions.

State did a better job with Duke on the road than either Miami or Wake did on their home fields. I know this type of speculation is dangerous, but I believe Wake is ripe and Miami makes too many mistakes. This a building block win, and just in time to rejuvenate our “horrible” fans for an in-state rivalry game in C-F.

Seriously – at some point does the ACC step in and force Duke to construct a real stadium, or start stripping it of home games? I don’t think a single BCS school plays in anything remotely as bad as Wallace Wade.

On the plus side, Duke football fans are very relaxed and pleasant. Big difference from the hoops crowd.

The bathrooms are a total embarassment to Duke. Must be 1940 style, similar to all the references to the rose bowl in the stadium.

They basicaly don’t want you to be able to get close to the stadium. But it is a nice change of pace from big time college football games.

We have won every game I have been to at Wade, and that has been quite a few.

BJD, I completely agree. WV Wolf and I were talking about that today at the game. I know it is Duke, but it is a big disadvantage that there isn’t a visitor locking room. If it is raining or very cold or snowing, that is a huge advantage for Dook. I don’t know how the ACC allows them to get away with this.

If Cutcliffe gets them winning, I wonder when an ACC coach will publicly say that this disadvantage is pathetic.

Also, we drove around for about 30 minutes trying to find somewhere to park. All parking lots were private “Towing strictly enforced” areas. We had NO idea where we were going and wound up parking about 25 minutes from the stadium.

The Neal kickoff return was #8 on sportscenter top 10 plays!

I’m happy to hear that about Glennon, but I for one would be mighty upset if Russell Wilson isn’t the clear #1 going into next season … Aside from the W/L (which he’s missed 3 and the D is awful), it’s tough to top a freshman season like Wilson is having … Very impressive

Duke has a very nice color coded parking map on their website for non-permit lots. Definitely suggest bring something like that when going to an away game. I was going to post it here Friday night along with other suggestions, but just didn’t have time. I will definitely do an entry with details as far as the best options for going to Chapel Hill.

The bathrooms on the visitors side were a joke. It was like you were going down into a dungeon. However other than that I really enjoy games at Wallace Wade. We got there later than expected(12:00) and most of the lots were 75% full. Good tailgating(even the Duke folks seemed to get into it). Great weather too.

When is the last time against a division 1 opponent where we got out to a lead and held it without the game ever becoming in doubt? I could stand a lot more games like yesterdays.

So has the bottoming out of the program stopped now? Obviously we have fallen a long ways, but not losing to Duke signals to me that we have hit the floor and are definitely bouncing back now. So the official bottom was the ass kicking against South Florida.

Lots of good things came out of yesterday…even the defense has to feel good about themselves. As far Glennon, he is going to have to be Philip Rivers/Matt Ryan good to get snaps as long as Russell Wilson is here. Wilson is such an athlete, he has a great arm, he is accurate, and he makes great decisions.

What could have been had we been healthy this season? I was predicting 4-8 before the rash of injuries and considered that optimistic by 1 win. There was no point in predicting 6+ wins until any of us saw a good QB in an NC State uniform again. Considering Russell Wilson is actually better than good and one of the best in the conference, then IMO we could have won 6+ games this year.

Wish the season was starting now…

I know it’s Duke, but solid win saturday. If you look at their roster with veteran players & on their home field it was a good win. Three more tough games to go. Hopefully with Nate Irving back the defensive unit will keep it going.

Duke athletic dept. employee ran into my 13 year old neice with his golf cart before the game yesterday. Her crowd was given free food vouchers and they upgraded their seats. Really nice about the whole thing. He asked her if she was Duke fan, told him she was a State fan. He said they like State fans.

My brother -n- law said, our defense still weak. Looked more like the defense he saw at the beginning of the year.

  16. Trip 11/09/2008 at 10:19 AM #

Something tells me that Glennon may be on the sideline for one more year… Wilson is just incredible and I don’t think our O-line will improve enough that a slower Glennon can be protected every down.

Just glad to see that next year we’re going to have 2 talented QB’s fighting for the starting position… and IF (I certainly hope not) one of them gets injured, atleast we know that our backup is good enough to win the game.

It was my first trip to Wallace Wade for football, man what a joke for restrooms, if you can find one. I saw the Stones concert @ WW, thought the huge crowd overwhelmed Dook, but it was much better at concert cause they had a few porta johns set up. Gameday you were hard pissed to find one.

Overall, it was a fun day, started out tailgating, parked right in on a section of Dookies, our group spread out a table, popped up our red NCSU tent, fired up the grill and you would have thought we smelled or something, all the Dook trunkgaters, (I say that if you call sitting in a chair behind an open trunk tailgating) started moving further and further from us. One group did come over in amazement of our pop up tent like it was a NCSU engineering marvel. And whats up with the Dook students dress code, never saw so many guy students wearing 2-tos, leggings, costumes, even a group who had red undies over their pants. And the female Dook students were just as strange, Halloween a week long event over there?

The stadium was more like a 4A high school, but after so many years at Carter, loved the throw back intimate atmosphere. Agree, it was surprising to see a visiting team have to go behind the scoreboard at half, heck my 3A high school has visiting locker room. I’d say there was atleast 30 percent red or more. I sat below the IronDuke section which was surrounded by red, and held their heads down during “Wolf–Pack” chants.

Great Day, Great Game, Great Win.

I’m expecting a heavy dose of misdirection from Wake this week. They think they are back to contender form. I also expect cheap shots on Nate’s sore ankle — all part of their intricate blocking scheme, of course.

“So the official bottom was the ass kicking against South Florida.”

I agree with this statement with an asterisk – Wilson, Cash and Irving all missed the USF game. Take these three out the next three weeks and we’ll get our ass kicked in again.

We are the healthiest we’ve been all year and that makes us average. Average gives you a chance in the ACC.

That’s back from the days when men were men, back when every single tree provided an opportunity to relieve yourself. Stop being such a pansy Highstick. 😉

You’ve got to figure that the Wilson-Glennon transition will have something to do with Wilson going pro in baseball…no? I’ve always felt that Wilson was the transition guy and would probably leave early for baseball, and Glennon would step in.

    Re- Duke Student Fans

Its funny reading how they dressed in the above post. As the years go on… the Duke student fans are much more concerned about there “wild” than cheering for their teams. There student fans are a narcistic bunch

  23. redfred2 11/09/2008 at 11:36 AM #

Cameron Indoor/Wallace Wade, one has seen all kinds of success over the years, the other has not. Either way, the two kind of seem to go together at Duke University.

Cameron Indoor is further proof that fancy fuhcilities must come first.

I agree with the last two points of the post. I can’t understand why I couldn’t turn right or left on Towerview off of Erwin but folks wanting to go straight across could. Then, when I finally did get to the parking lot with my group, the parking Nazi out front was adamant about the lot being full despite us telling her our friends were saving a spot. Even after the guy walked up there to talk to her she was still not wanting to let us in. Finally, after some coaxing, she relented. Then we drive through the lot and count 5 or so spots that are open Wtf?

The bathroom situation was really eye opening for me. I expected quite a bit more out of Duke. I can understand that their football program hasn’t brought in much money lately, but surely their donors and the folks pouring cash into the bball program can come up with a few hundred thousand to bring the toilets up to 1980 standards. It wasn’t so much that the male bathroom on the visitor side was trough style with no real sink anywhere to wash your hands, it was the standing pisswater that got splashed up onto my jeans that really got me. Then, they didn’t even take the time to clean the steps leading to the restroom. One side of them looked like mud had washed down from the hillside and just settled there.

Otherwise, WW is a decent place to catch a football game on a Saturday afternoon.

Wallace Wade and Kenan are the two stadiums in the ACC that I absolutely despise going to. The traffic and parking are as bad as anything you could imagine.

I am very pleased by the advances we’ve seen on both offense and defense this year. I can’t imagine why anyone would still be bitching about it.
