The Fall Guys

After a busy weekend of college football, we are a week closer to the cranking up of the coaching carousel. The Wiz of Odds has an interesting entry this morning on college football coaches and their coordinators.

Jon Solomon of the Birmingham News surveyed 120 I-A teams for the number of coordinators since 1999, when Tommy Tuberville, above, made his debut at Auburn. Of the 15 coaches who have held the same job since 1999, Tuberville and Troy’s Larry Blakeney have each burned through 10 coordinators, tops in the land.

On average, the 15 coaches have employed only 5.6 coordinators in 10 years.

Check out the following coaches’ records over last 10 years from the Wiz’s interesting table:

Tommy Tuberville: 84-37
Phillip Fulmer: 83-38
Bobby Bowden: 86-35

It is pretty hard to imagine that all three of these coaches are so firmly attached to the hot seat that many experts expect two of the three of them to be fired. In fact, Tony Barnhardt ran fantastic article on Phil Fulmer this weekend that can be seen by clicking here.

But it appears Phillip Fulmer’s dream, which was so good for so long, may soon be coming to an end. There was no other conclusion to draw late Saturday night after the Volunteers fell to No. 2 Alabama 29-9 before a crowd of 106,138 that cascaded boos onto the field for most of the third and fourth quarters. Tennessee fell to 3-5 (1-4 in the SEC) and could be headed to its second losing record in the past four seasons.

Fulmer left the field with his wife and daughters by his side. When he met with reporters, he looked like a man who was running out of answers.

Fulmer, in his 16th full season as head coach, was in the SEC Championship Game a year ago, losing to LSU, the eventual national champion. But the fall of the Volunteers this season has been so steep and so dramatic that even his strongest defenders are now having a hard time making their case.

If this turns out to be Fulmer’s last season at Tennessee, he will leave with an average record of 9-3. He won a national championship in 1998 and has taken teams to five SEC Championship Games — only Steve Spurrier has been to more. He has won 100 more games (150-50) than he has lost. Those numbers are decidedly in Fulmer’s favor.

But there are other numbers which have been circulated by a disgruntled Tennessee fan base that is convinced the Volunteers program, despite last year’s trip to Atlanta, has been slipping for several years while its biggest rivals — Alabama, Florida and Georgia — have been moving forward. Fulmer is 0-4 vs. Florida’s Urban Meyer, 3-5 versus Georgia’s Mark Richt and 1-4 versus Saban, who also coached LSU.

Fulmer won back-to-back SEC championships in 1997 and 1998 but has not won a title since. No coach in Tennessee history has ever gone 10 years without winning an SEC championship.

And then there is the issue of David Cutcliffe, Fulmer’s longtime offensive coordinator who is now the head coach at Duke. With Cutcliffe calling the plays, Fulmer’s teams were 85-19. In the years that Cutcliffe was gone, first at Ole Miss and now at Duke, Tennessee’s teams are 65-31.

^There is no substitute for a balanced attack. If you can’t pass enough to keep a defense honest it doesn’t matter what system you try to run whether it is the “I”, veer, wishbone or spread.

Noah, Michigan has talent but they don’t have the speed/talent to run the spread, especially at QB. And it’s funny that Meyer can run the spread no matter where he’s been, and he’s had dynamic offenses at every stop. But at UF he has the ultimate luxury of selecting talent from a state loaded with speed and talent that fits his system to a tee.

And what did Michigan do w/ that talent the last few years?

Won a bunch of big ten titles? Went to the Rose Bowl several times? Won a national title in the last ten years? Beat the living crap out of Florida last year in the bowl game?

BTW, someone asked about the Dolphins — no, they don’t run the spread. They run the wildcat-formation sometimes (as do the Panthers). That’s not the same thing.

“There sure as heck were not that many (not even half) in chapel hole to watch a decent football team beat up BC”

UNC is a fun team to watch, they’re winning,…. and the seats were about 60% full for the BC game. UNC fans don’t care about football. I believe that’s one of the bigger challenges in them keeping a good coach.

Have they won a bunch the last 5 years? I know they’ve lost to Ohio State the last 4 years in a row. That win over Florida was the only bowl game win they’ve had in the last 5 years.

It’s not about ten years ago – if it was – Phillip Fulmer – who runs a good, old-fashioned offense – wouldn’t be on the hotseat either.

It’s about the last 5 – and make no mistake about it – Michigan was being left in the dust by Ohio State. Time will tell if Rich Rodriguez is the answer or not. But it’s foolish to judge him after one year – unless that’s the way you judge all coaches.

How could you possibly draw any other conclusion? Fulmer has a great overall record but has not kept step with the other top programs in the SEC.

Great job on the number of assistant that Tuberville has gone through. I am not at all surprised that he leads the nation in fired coordinators. It seems like he is always throwing one assistant or another under the bus to keep his job.

^smile, you just summed up why unx fans are such an elitist bunch of pricks. And why, IMHO, ol butch slap would be a FOOL to stay there when he could in fact be packing them in Neyland – for somewhere close to what Saban is making. Kenan at 60% full is a joke. Time will tell.

The TN coach gets this nice mansion on the river just a mile or so from Neylan Stadium. Who could turn down that? Along with all the money that they will lay on top of you and 102,000 fans in the stadium at every game.

Wolf dog…I think Richt & Amato were great Asst’s at FSU..both were the heart so to speak. They both left in 2000 and you see what has happened there. Richt has said that he will stay at UGA as long as they will have him and he seems to be genuine. I don’t see him coaching again once he is done there.

In response to smile up there I have to take the heels back on this one. My daughter (unfortunately) is a student there) and a bunch of students had registration times for classes during the game AND it was pouring before the game and even into halftime. I agree with some of the crap that we give the heels about not attending games but that was an exception to the packed stadium kenan has had this year to the point that they are gonna close in the stadium once the season is over to allow more tickets.
