The Fall Guys

After a busy weekend of college football, we are a week closer to the cranking up of the coaching carousel. The Wiz of Odds has an interesting entry this morning on college football coaches and their coordinators.

Jon Solomon of the Birmingham News surveyed 120 I-A teams for the number of coordinators since 1999, when Tommy Tuberville, above, made his debut at Auburn. Of the 15 coaches who have held the same job since 1999, Tuberville and Troy’s Larry Blakeney have each burned through 10 coordinators, tops in the land.

On average, the 15 coaches have employed only 5.6 coordinators in 10 years.

Check out the following coaches’ records over last 10 years from the Wiz’s interesting table:

Tommy Tuberville: 84-37
Phillip Fulmer: 83-38
Bobby Bowden: 86-35

It is pretty hard to imagine that all three of these coaches are so firmly attached to the hot seat that many experts expect two of the three of them to be fired. In fact, Tony Barnhardt ran fantastic article on Phil Fulmer this weekend that can be seen by clicking here.

But it appears Phillip Fulmer’s dream, which was so good for so long, may soon be coming to an end. There was no other conclusion to draw late Saturday night after the Volunteers fell to No. 2 Alabama 29-9 before a crowd of 106,138 that cascaded boos onto the field for most of the third and fourth quarters. Tennessee fell to 3-5 (1-4 in the SEC) and could be headed to its second losing record in the past four seasons.

Fulmer left the field with his wife and daughters by his side. When he met with reporters, he looked like a man who was running out of answers.

Fulmer, in his 16th full season as head coach, was in the SEC Championship Game a year ago, losing to LSU, the eventual national champion. But the fall of the Volunteers this season has been so steep and so dramatic that even his strongest defenders are now having a hard time making their case.

If this turns out to be Fulmer’s last season at Tennessee, he will leave with an average record of 9-3. He won a national championship in 1998 and has taken teams to five SEC Championship Games — only Steve Spurrier has been to more. He has won 100 more games (150-50) than he has lost. Those numbers are decidedly in Fulmer’s favor.

But there are other numbers which have been circulated by a disgruntled Tennessee fan base that is convinced the Volunteers program, despite last year’s trip to Atlanta, has been slipping for several years while its biggest rivals — Alabama, Florida and Georgia — have been moving forward. Fulmer is 0-4 vs. Florida’s Urban Meyer, 3-5 versus Georgia’s Mark Richt and 1-4 versus Saban, who also coached LSU.

Fulmer won back-to-back SEC championships in 1997 and 1998 but has not won a title since. No coach in Tennessee history has ever gone 10 years without winning an SEC championship.

And then there is the issue of David Cutcliffe, Fulmer’s longtime offensive coordinator who is now the head coach at Duke. With Cutcliffe calling the plays, Fulmer’s teams were 85-19. In the years that Cutcliffe was gone, first at Ole Miss and now at Duke, Tennessee’s teams are 65-31.

Could it be that the heart and soul of that Tennessee team was David Cutcliffe now at Duke? With Duke doing well and TN slumping you have to think the next Coach at TN may come from Durham.

I know that the N&O speculated recently that UT could be wooing Cutcliffe in the event that Fulmer is fired while many think the chief will be their #1 target. Could be interesting to follow. I hope UT opens up a sizable wampum pouch for chief and he moves west ASAP.

Tuberville went and installed that idiotic option-spread I-AA ridicula-crap offense. That’s his problem.

Bowden, Rich Rodriguez and Tubberville all deserve to be thrown into I-AA coaching hell for their sins.

You guys have all seen the “We Are Marshall” movie, yes? Remember when their talking about what kind of offense to install and the OC suggests the veer? It was a 60s and 70s option offense for folks that didn’t have a good OL and were constantly being outmanned. It puts the few good athletes that you do have out on an island where you can exploit their speed. Instead of having your 11 guys beat their 11 guys, you have your one or two guys beat their one or two guys.

THAT is the option-spread that Clemson and Michigan and WVU employ. If you’re talent-deficient, it makes sense to run it. We run a variation of it and since we’re outmanned, it makes sense. If you’re Clemson or Michigan or Auburn and have superior personnel, it’s absolutely ridiculous.

It will be interesting to see what sort of route each of the big boys go. I’ve heard a couple of people say that Bobby Johnson will be a candidate within the SEC for both jobs. I’m still hopeful that they try to woo Butch Davis.

I’d love to see Butch gone too, but if it’s just about the money, I don’t think there is a college athletics program outside of maybe Texas that could outbid the deep pockets of the Rams Club…now they may get a huge amount of criticism for doing it from the nerds on the faculty and people like Bill Friday, but they no doubt have the money to keep Butch if they want to…

TOB better hope Davis leaves, because Wolfpack nation isn’t too kind to coaches that lose consistently to UNC (see O’Cain, Mike and Amato, Chuck), no matter their other accomplishments, and if Davis builds a perennial top-10 team at Chapel Hill and Grobe stays at Wake, we are going to be suckling from the hind teat in NC recruiting for years to come, and we cannot be successful on a long term basis without recruiting well in NC…

  5. Pack92 10/27/2008 at 8:50 AM #

The rams club WOULD NOT outbid TN if TN really want ‘ol butch slap. The rams club would go to war over keepng ‘ol roy but not for a football coach. I am quite sure they could make it interesting for Butch. Butch knows he will never be “big chief” in chapel hole like he would in Knoxville or Auburn. Why not make Saban money AND be big man on campus? The holes aren’t going to start an internal bidding war with ‘ol Roy. I also wouldn’t underestimate how much money Auburn would spend for Butch. They know what they’re up against in Saban.

  6. Wulfpack 10/27/2008 at 8:53 AM #

I think UT will certainly talk to Cutcliffe but he is very loyal to Fulmer, and I just don’t see it. What UT needs is a good young go-at-em coach that isn’t going to bow down to the likes of Meyer, Richt, Saban and Miles. Look at what Meyer and Richt have brought to their respective programs. It may or might not work given the huge advantages those schools now have over UT but Cutcliffe is an older guy and many UT fans weren’t thrilled with the guy when he was running the O. Muschamp at Texas will have a big-time gig in a matter of weeks…

Too bad for Phil Fulmer that his name is not HWSNBN or that his AD is not Lee Fowler …

The media just isn’t going to berate fans or build faux gold statues in your honor unless you have those two things in your favor … if only 😉

why do you people desire for acc teams to lose good coaches . I want to see ncsu beating good acc teams with good coaches rather than beating bad acc teams.if you only wnat wins then schedule more IIA teams or conf usa .

Noah – isn’t Miami of the NFL running the spread? Aren’t they doing pretty darn good?

Tubberville’s problem is he is Tubberville. He brought in a new OC with a totally different plan, but Franklin wasn’t allowed to bring any of his coaches with him. ALL the assistants are Tubberville’s buddies and they have been with him through ALL the OC changes. These guys who were suppose to work for Franklin never even once asked him over to eat. How is that for welcoming him. The spread that failed at Auburn because it never had a chance, still born from day one. You might not like the spread, but Auburn is not example of its failure.

Franklin said on the radio last week that he thought he could be successful where so many failed before him. He couldn’t. The “system” is unchanging.

I love how Tubby said he fully supported Franklin and then fired him less the 24 hrs later. Its that sort of duplicitous, back-stabbing, in ability to tell the truth that makes Tubby a perfect fit for Auburn. They are idea for each other. I hope he can pull off two wins so the school can’t fire him and they can all wallow in their misery together next year too.

I cant beleive they boo’d Fulmer. How classless is that? LOL

  11. choppack1 10/27/2008 at 10:28 AM #

Noah – Are you talking about the veer or it’s little brother – the spread?

I think the spread is a solid offense to run when you have a QB who is capable of running AND throwing the ball…force the D to defend every inch of the field.

Of course, Michigan and Clemson won w/ conservative offenses, but in spite of their talent superiority, they stopped contending for national championships w/ the coaches who won them when the best players didn’t want to play in those offenses any more. You can win w/ a national championship w/ a pro style offense, but most teams – w/ the exception of USC – have had trouble installing a pro style offense recently.

“and Grobe stays at Wake, we are going to be suckling from the hind teat in NC recruiting for years to come”

I respectfully disagree with this comment. In my opinion, the Grobe era is about to run out of steam – it has been a remarkable run fueled somewhat by the following factors:

Duke, NC State & UNC all had incompetent head coaches during his start up at Wake. This is no longer true.

In Ryan Plackemeier and Sam Swank, Grobe has enjoyed an NFL level punter and kicker during his entire tenure at Wake. This is an incredible advantage to any program but even more so with the conservative game approach taken by Grobe. Swank has been hurt the last couple of games and it has cost them dearly.

Grobe is graded on an overly generous curve because he is at Wake Forest. He is a very good coach but the talk you hear about him being the best coach in the country is nonsense. Amato won 45% of his ACC games during his seven year run at State – Grobe’s current winning percentage in ACC games – 44%.

Super crappy thing is even with Clemson and Tenn. coaching future is disarray our recruiting is still looking on par with Duke this season. Just about any star DE,DT,S,FB could come in, enroll for fall scrimmage/practice and be on the two deep. So far the positions named above have been recruited sparsely and with “under the radar” types.

My opinion is that TOB didn’t come down here to recruit the same way as they did at BC, but so far this summer/fall has been showing little momentum. We won’t have an excuse that Clemson and Tenn. keeping stealing our recruits when we can’t compete with them on years like this.

  14. choppack1 10/27/2008 at 10:51 AM #

Seat 5 – with TOB – I am only concerned about him recruiting properly enough to build up depth. I think you can win by doing things the right way w/ the right athleticism. But a guy like TOB needs his pieces in place. They simply aren’t there yet.

RickJ – I have to agree w/ you. One of the things missing in the analysis of the last couple of years is how many close games Wake has won. In spite of having the “best coach in the ACC” – they’ve barely eaked out wins over Duke, State and UNC. When they’ve met a team w/ talent that actually executes, the results are usually a one-sided loss. Granted, I think that Grobe does an excellent job at preparing his team and teaching fundamentals, but I think he’s an average game-day coach – and his offense tends to become too conservative inside the 20.

I was in Knoxville this weekend for the UT-Bama game. I didn’t hear one person cheering when they announced the starting lineups and ended it with “Coached by Phillip Fulmer.” There were at least 15,000-17,000 Alabama fans at the game. It is easily the most opponent fans I have ever seen in Neyland Stadium, and I have probably been to about 75 games there.

In listening to the talk after the game and then on Sunday morning, even the hosts of the shows don’t see how there is a way that Fulmer will be able to stay. Watching this team does make you wonder how much Cutcliffe controlled that offense. The offense returned 10 starters this year…only having to replace the quarterback, Eric Ainge. The OL gave up 5 snaps in 14 games last year, by far the best in the nation. This year, the OLine can’t run or pass block. Out of Tennessee’s first 9 possessions against a very good Bama defense, playing without its best players, the Vols had 7 3 and outs. Ouch.

I don’t see Cutcliffe even interviewing for an opening position in Knoxville. He is too good of a friend of Fulmer’s to make that situation not completely awkward. And, he has only been at Duke for 1 year. I didn’t hear Chief Bruce Davis’s name mentioned at all this weekend. The interesting name I did hear was Jon Gruden, as his wife was a UT cheerleader and they are building a house in Knoxville. It reminded me of hearing how Roy was building a house in Chapel Hill even when he was the coach at Kansas.

  16. wufpup76 10/27/2008 at 11:48 AM #

^Interesting stuff, ruffles … I’d be really surprised though if they got Gruden, but you never know

  17. Pack92 10/27/2008 at 12:32 PM #

Ruffles, I could give you 3 phone numbers (2 of which were at Neyland Sat.) of folks SCREAMING for CHief Davis. Interesting thing about TN – we assume the rivalry is Bama/Auburn. It is, but a close second and maybe even on par is the Bama/TN rivalry. TN views Davis as the only real option to compete with Saban who has a manageable buy-out (no accident there). TN wants to pay the money and get instant results just like Bama. If this continues to play out there could be a real bidding war between Auburn and TN. Neither school is going to coninue to accept the level of play displayed so far. TN was absolutely pathetic on Saturday and Auburn was no better last Thursday. Stay tuned folks!

  18. Wulfpack 10/27/2008 at 12:44 PM #

I have also heard that Gruden is many Vol faithful’s top choice. I agree he’d look great in orange and has that fire to go head-to-head with the best. If he or Butch end up there, talk about a power conference of top coaches!

Noah, square your argument on the spread with UF’s program. Are they stupid and out-manned too? Here in Florida they are selecting, rather than recruiting, the very best talent and speed in one of the two or three most talent rich areas in the country. I think you need to rethink your ridiculous bias against the spread.

As for Rodriguez, once he gets his type of talent in Ann Arbor he will be fine, but right now he doesn’t have the speed or talent to run his system. And from what I’ve seen his team doesn’t seem to have bought in to his system either. In Tuberville’s case, he has jumped all around with different systems and is finally paying a heavy cost for doing so.

  20. Wolf Dog 10/27/2008 at 1:10 PM #

Good Article for discussion. The rumors will be flying in full swing soon. You never know what might happen. Duke coach could have been heart and soul at Tenn. and good chance he might go back. Could say Mark Richt was heart and soul at FSU? They not been the same since he went to Ga.? I believe Richt is Miami Alum, could he end up at Miami or back at FSU one day? Certainly more fertile recruiting ground than at Ga.? I am surprised we not hearing more about Miami, that guy is not Head Coach materail!

Grobe may leave Wake one day but I only see him going to Nebraska or a Big Ten school most likely where his style of football has a better chance for success.

I think the coach most likely to leave the ACC is Davis from UNC-Ch. I think most that know him expect it. He certainly aware he can garnish a huge pay check with his next move and got a better chance at winning a national championship at other schools such as Auburn/UCLA/Tenn etc than at Basketball school Chapel Hill. And no the Rams Club does not have the money to match what other schools have. Football does not generate near the revenue that many other Div. I programs do and the Rams Club spends so much on basketball. Plus the Dean Dome has been a very expensive building to maintain.

Now that the reporters will be covering Roy and the boys for B-Ball and a preseason Number 1 ranking lets see if Davis’ ego makes him leave like Brown’s did.

Meyer will be fine. Provided that every QB he recruits is as good as Tim Tebow. That shouldn’t be too hard, should it?

Florida won a few years ago when their defense was the best in the country. They didn’t beat Ohio State because of their offense. They beat them because their defense absolutely suffocated the Buckeyes.

And if you Rodriguez doesn’t have GOBS of talent right now, you haven’t watched Michigan play this year. They’ve got four RBs who are capable of running for 1,500 yards in a traditional offense. They’ve got tons of WRs, about eleventeen TEs and one of the better FBs in the country.

The spread works…provided your team sucks. It’s the Princeton offense for football. It requires incredible precision and the margin for error is incredibly small. Provided you can get a team to operate like a swiss watch, you’ll be fine.

  22. ruffles31 10/27/2008 at 3:10 PM #

Pack92, I don’t doubt it, but I guess I was in the wrong section. But as a Vols fan as well as a State grad, I just don’t want to see Chief Davis as the next Vols coach. It would make me feel dirty. But that is just me.

It will be an interesting few weeks in Knoxville though. I would like to see the Vols go for someone like Mike Leach (Texas Tech —doubtful that would happen), Mike Kelly (Cincinnati), Chris Peterson (Boise State), or even Muschamp (Texas DC).

I think Tuberville is still safe. UT would definitely be the best job on the market this year.

Speaking of Fall Guys, am I the only one thinking about this: ?

“I might fall from a tall building
I might roll a brand new car
    ‘Cause I’m the unknown stuntman
That makes Redford such a star”

    LEE MAJORS, The Fall Guy

If I had to pick between Lee’s, MAJORS triumphs over FOWLER

  24. Pack92 10/27/2008 at 3:26 PM #

I agree ruffles. UT would HAVE to be the prime job when you can pack in 105,000+ to watch a team that stinks. There sure as heck were not that many (not even half) in chapel hole to watch a decent football team beat up BC. I have also heard some things about Muschamp but folks are afraid of his experience level.

Noah, I think 1 team proves your point. Pitt lost to a Meyer-coached Utah team big time in a BCS bowl (3 yrs ago?) because the athletes did not match up. Alex Smith did whatever he wanted in that game. However, against a Rodriguez WVU spread last year, Pitt did a good job stopping the run up the middle and made WVU go out side more. Pitt then simply made good open-field tackles on small ball carriers and won the game. Pat White is nowhere near the passer Smith was or Tebow is and it just shut WVU down. There just is no substitute for a quality “I” running game offset with 1-2 good wideouts and a pass-catching tight end.

  25. choppack1 10/27/2008 at 3:52 PM #

And what did Michigan do w/ that talent the last few years?

And that statement shouldn’t be interpretted that “type A” of offense can never win – I’m just saying it’s just as silly to write off Rodriguez off after one year at Michigan as it is to say, “you can’t win w/ a vanilla offense.”

As for the Florida game – their defense was good, but their offense did a solid job and kept the ball almost 40 minutes. I’d also say that the Tim Tebow who won that game was nowhere near the same player as the Tebow who has played the last 2 years.
