Saturday Football Open Thread (Updated 1:45pm)

Naturally, when the Pack finally gets a coveted Saturday night home game…all the good TV matchups are late starts (Alabama at Georgia being the highlight). I suppose UNC/Miami is somewhat interesting, in that a loss would almost surely knock the Holes out of Coastal Division contention. And a loss really should be the end result – but keep your fingers crossed.

Duke is a full touchdown favorite against an ACC foe (Virginia) today. How long has it been since you could say that? The Cavs really, really suck. So, naturally, they are not on NC State’s schedule this year just as Duke has not been on the Wolfpack’s schedule the last four years.

The “Observers” had good ‘observations’ in today’s papers:

* ACC bounces back: The ACC is gaining momentum after a disastrous opening weekend. Wins against East Carolina, Mississippi State and Texas A&M helped the ACC’s stature climb while the Pac-10 plummeted. Entering this week, the ACC ranked fourth among BCS conferences behind the SEC, Big Ten and Big 12 at realtimerpi.com.

* Refereeing stellar: We’re one-third of the way, and the ACC hasn’t had an officiating controversy yet. The refs usually only get mentioned when there’s a complaint. Let’s give them credit.

* ‘This ain’t intramurals, brother’: Colorado is 3-0 and coming off a big win against West Virginia under coach Dan Hawkins, who’s famous for his rant urging malcontents to play intramurals. The Buffaloes will be formidable for a Florida State team that looked awful on offense in a 12-3 loss to Wake Forest.

* Rivalries cooling?: Michael Jordan Nissan is advertising on Tom O’Brien’s N.C. State coach’s show. What’s happening to the rivalries? Next thing you know, the Tar Heel Radio Network will be running Mike Krzyzewski’s Duke Sports Medicine ads.

SFN always promotes that Wolfpack fans need to ‘get out there’ and experience other schools – as it relates to both athletics and general campus experiences – as often and as much as possible. In the following video about Georgia you get to hear about Vince Dooley boning some hot chick. You also learn that Georgia has 65 bars around campus. I don’t think all of Raleigh has 65 bars.

    Sorry…BEST case is OT.

    Nevermind, Carolina touchdown.

    Miami’s defense is the suck.

  2. packbackr04 09/27/2008 at 2:01 PM #

    touchdown UNC

  3. RBCRowdy 09/27/2008 at 2:02 PM #

I was really hoping Miami will stomp out UNC’s ACC season. Thanks for nothing Randy Shannon.

  4. Noah 09/27/2008 at 2:03 PM #

0:46 left and UNC is up 28-24.

The 23 Miami fans in the stands “are stunned.” This has been about as bad a fourth-quarter performance as I’ve ever seen. Miami has done EVERYTHING wrong. Coaches, players, everything. They absolutely shat themselves.

  5. Noah 09/27/2008 at 2:03 PM #

Someone is going to have to remind me why Randy Shannon is considered such a great coach.

    Good lord this team sucks.

the Rebel defense is looking great, first INT against Fla this year. Ole Miss offense is sputtering but we just went up 24-17 as they start the 4th Q. So go REBELS!!

  7. Noah 09/27/2008 at 2:05 PM #

Miami has now burned about 20 seconds of clock to pick up five yards.

Have these guys ever played football before?

  8. RBCRowdy 09/27/2008 at 2:06 PM #

He got 8 players from a Miami High School that beat everyone last year. I think that is the basis for his hype.

LOL @ Andre Ware saying everyone is on their feet. He could count the people in that stadium using his hands and toes.

  9. Noah 09/27/2008 at 2:07 PM #

Miami manages to get down to the UNC 25 with about 16 seconds left.

So at least when they throw this INT, it will be in the endzone.

Whahahahahhahahhaha Clemson just choked on a big one. Tommy B is done, they should have let him go to ArKANSAS.

  11. Noah 09/27/2008 at 2:08 PM #

10 seconds left. Carolina only rushes three and still almost sacks the Miami QB

  12. RBCRowdy 09/27/2008 at 2:09 PM #

Noah, do you have Monday’s winning lottery numbers too?

  13. Noah 09/27/2008 at 2:09 PM #

Miami had a receiver in the endzone and hit him in the hands. But he dropped it and UNC caught it. Interception. UNC wins.

Miami is the very much suckage.

Did Maryland hang on and win? Man, one more time…Tommy Bowden needs to go coach Tulane again. Maybe he can take Rich Rodriguez with him.

That spread option bulls**t that they run is the stupidest damn thing I’ve ever seen in my life. And yeah, I’m talking about you too, Urban Meyer. You got your *** whipped by Michigan last year and Ole Miss is beating you right now.

These teams that have 85 future NFL players and spend the whole day trying to tapdance around the field make me sick.

  15. RBCRowdy 09/27/2008 at 2:14 PM #

    Maryland won.

I agree, the spread became popular so less dominant teams could dink and dunk around the big defenses and score some points. The top teams with NFL talent should stick to the pro style offenses.

  16. Noah 09/27/2008 at 2:20 PM #

It’s the Princeton offense of football. It makes sense if you’re talent-deficient. It keeps you in games and evens the spread against superior teams.

But why would a school like Carolina or Dook run it?? It’s why it was so stupid for Dean Smith to run the four-corners. You’ve got a team full of All-Americans. Blow the other guy away. Why are you purposefully keeping them around?

If you’re Tommy Bowden, you’ve got a great QB, huge and fast WRs, and two NFL backs. Why are you trying to finesse the other team?? They can’t cover you, they can’t stop your ground attack. Why are you trying to rely on misdirection and trick plays?

Fla drives easily and scores to tie it up again. Ole Miss goes three and out, but now we’ve got Fla 3rd & 17. Ole Miss has sacked Tebow 3 times, Fla had only 3 sacks this season. 8 min’s left in this game.

  18. EverettBeez 09/27/2008 at 2:30 PM #

85 yard pass/run TD for Ole Miss puts us up by 7 in the 4th.
    Hotty Toddy Y’all!!

  19. StateFans 09/27/2008 at 2:31 PM #

Ole Miss just pulled off a bomb. This game is really good.

    Tommy Bowden is toast.

    Skip Holtz to Clemson

  20. timswar 09/27/2008 at 2:34 PM #

I’m playing “Spot The Chest” on ABC right now. I’ve spotted him twice so far.

  21. StateFans 09/27/2008 at 2:37 PM #

In case you didn’t know…Clemson fans are booing

CLEMSON, S.C. — It’s official. Clemson has laid two eggs this season, losing 20-17 to Maryland on Saturday. At home. And, yes, Clemson fans are booing.

Maryland’s defense was the difference in the second half, finally shutting down Clemson’s playmakers. This marks the second time in the Terps’ past two trips to Death Valley they have come away with a win. Neither team looked all that impressive, and both made costly mistakes, but Maryland somehow got this win.

The Clemson fans are booing as they file out. More later … heading down to the locker rooms now.

Florida just has its extra point BLOCKED and trails Ole Miss at 34-33 with 3:28 in the game.

  22. EverettBeez 09/27/2008 at 2:38 PM #

Fla is driving at will now. 1st down after 1st down until the TD. It was like Ole Miss defense didn’t even come out this drive.
    BUT
    BLOCK PAT!!!!!
Ole Miss up by 1 with 3:28
Myer though is yelling that a guy jumped or something.

  23. EverettBeez 09/27/2008 at 2:39 PM #

Thought I heard Florida fans booing, turned out they were yelling Mooooooody – one of their backs, lol.

  24. RBCRowdy 09/27/2008 at 2:40 PM #

Looks like last year wasnt an isolated incident. Big teams either losing or struggling weekly now,

  25. Noah 09/27/2008 at 2:44 PM #

What channel is the Ole Miss game on? I can’t find it.
