Complete Meltdown for USF (No Wilson, No Irving)

Here’s the link – I have very little to say except are you f-ing kidding me?

Wilson, who threw three touchdown passes against the Pirates, suffered an undisclosed injury in the second half of the game but continued to play. He was evaluated on Sunday and O’Brien made the decision then to hold him out of this week’s game, which is slated to kick off at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU.

The coach also announced that starting sophomore linebacker Nate Irving, the team’s leading tackler, will also miss this weekend’s game with a lower leg injury. Irving suffered the injury in the first half of Saturday’s win over East Carolina. He attempted to return in the second half, but missed most of the rest of the game.

this is a great quote from TOB regarding H. Beck starting: “He can wing it around,” O’Brien said. “We just have to tell him that we’re wearing the red jerseys on Saturday night and we’ll be in good shape. “

who says he doesn’t have a sense of humor. . .

Well, we had a great weekend. Who says we can’t have another? Let’s see what happens and hope the guys can get healthy asap.

    Greywolf — good point.

I think blpack put it best just above when he says that “we had a great weekend. Who says we can’t have another?”

The coaches are telling the players that they can have a great weekend this weekend. They might be right.

After an afternoon to think on it, and winning at u7 soccer (though we don’t keep score, that’s two for us – my longest winning streak in 3 years) I am ready to believe our boys can step it up.

The D really did a great job on ECU in the second half – there were sever massive runs, but we held them for the most part on the goal line – especially in the 4th.

I think we build on that. I got a feeling we win. Hell, I believe it.
I hope so, I am getting ESPNU (who knew? DirecTV adds stuff all the time!) so I’ll get to see us play two weeks in a row!

in other news, Javi Gonzalez chopped off his feet and installed cheetahs, in order to no longer be called shorty..

I vote for an official name change to the site …

“INJURY-PRONE NATION” … (applies to all major revenue sports!!!)

    ***

Anyways, like others above – I think we have a shot Sat. night … Hopefully the team is keeping the positive feelings flowing … I should be well into the drinking by Sat. evening so I’ll be smiling and ready 😉 … I also said if “we beat Chapel Hole and/or ECU this season would be a resounding success to me” … Injuries be dam*ed, I’m already happy and proud of this team

Ohh, and another really good week for Philip in the National Football League … 3 TD’s / week isn’t too shabby

Oh old13 – please don’t be right about the baseball thing. Will we ever catch a break?? Well – on another note – I have heard UNX and Clemson fans alike saying that we ARE a total injured team. So it’s noted.

I about shit my pants when I heard about RW on the news tonight. Damnit.

I usually try to look at the bright side of things, but when I go to espn and read things like this “Beck will be NC State’s third starting quarterback in five games. That now makes 11 starters or key contributors who have missed at least one game for the Wolfpack this year.” it makes me want to cry.

i certainly dont think its acceptable for us or our coaches/players to start making excuses, which i admire the fact that they havnt at this point. but one would think that at this stage in the game, and for 2 years running the amount of adversity our team has faced with injuries,i`m surprised that it hasnt really been brought up in the media more. the types of injuries we have sustained and the number of players we have had miss games has to be worthy or some type of award….
ugh. i`m so frustrated, but numb
we cant enjoy one victory without being f-ed in the A. hell we cant even take a loss with out getting f-ed in the A

I’m not against this but how many highly ranked teams have we played so far? I can’t recall of SC was ranked but I know Clemson, ECU, and USF are nationally ranked. Basically, 3 of 5 or 4 of 5 with both hands tied behind our back. The Pack gets props for ambition and for these young kids to play tough talent will only make them better in the coming years. We just have to be patient.

I love the coach speak from Butch in a presser.

“Guys try to prepare to play when you are one injury for getting in a play, a game, a month, or year. This really got the attention and they will really take it serious now”

That is a paraphrase, but not at all taken out of context.

Are you kidding me? Is this HS? Do you really need to have an injury hit on you to get the guys ready for the opportunity?

TOB convinced Eugene to stay a State on this premise when he was buried in the depth chart and we had not been inflicted w/ a single injury to anyone.

Butch loves to hear himself speak so I’m sure this could have been in the bowels of bs stage.

Is there a problem or deficiency with our strength and conditioning program? The amount of season-ending injuries suffered by our program over the last few years is staggering. Just a thought.

  13. LKNpackfan 09/23/2008 at 8:12 AM #

UPDATE: Both Wilson and Irving are out indefinitely. (N&O)

  14. DFMo 09/23/2008 at 8:36 AM #

I know there is Caulton bashing here at times but I just read this and took it at face value and while there is still room to argue with him, up to the last 3 paragraphs, I think he was on the mark.

Tudor’s Take: No relief for Wolfpack
    http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/tudors-take-no-relief-for-wolfpack

    Of note:

“In fact, the injuries have been so extensive that second-year coach Tom O’Brien’s impact has become completely impossible to ascertain.

It’s obvious that O’Brien and his staff have a rare gift for keeping their players focused through a stretch of unreasonably bad fortune. The fact that he’s 2-2 this season and 7-9 overall is mildly amazing in view of the patchwork lineups that have been necessitated by so many injuries.”

  15. EverettBeez 09/23/2008 at 8:41 AM #

Sweet jumper, I was wondering the same thing. The TV crew went on about our great facilities, better then some pro-teams was the quote, like the indoor running pools, yet we keep getting injured. Now its just as likely its all bad luck, fate and great hits, but at what point to do we reevaluate the entire athletic training/sports medicine department?

Or is the word “reevaluate” banned under LF’s Athletic dept.

  16. SuperStuff 09/23/2008 at 8:51 AM #

Beck is a Florida kid that I’m sure wants to win this game against USF bad. He’ll be fine.

  17. SEAT.5.F.2 09/23/2008 at 9:06 AM #

I can’t beleive that anyone with eyes could question NI and RW strength and conditioning. They look like they are in peak condition.

Maybe if Amato was still here and we actually boxed could Clem had a chance to prevent a jaw injury.

Florida lost FOUR to kness before the season starts. Insert ridiculous depth, problem goes away.

  18. ChiefJoJo 09/23/2008 at 9:06 AM #

DFMo, yes. It is incredible what we have achieved (7-9, 2-2 this year) given the level of talent we have (below ACC avg), and the numbers of starters out. Yet, some of our fans last week were openly questioning the coaches; Bible, in particular.

We all understand the $ donors have put into the program in the last 8 years, and no one wants to lose, but people need to understand the reality we are dealing with here. If we can beat USF, it will be icing on the cake, and further confirmation that our staff is one of the best around.

  19. EverettBeez 09/23/2008 at 9:13 AM #

Seat.5.F.2 – Clearly these young men on the football team are in top shape – and yet they keep getting hurt. RW & NI’s injuries have nothing to do with their training, stretching, conditioning – those were honest on the field injuries. Indeed, it seems like many of our injuries are thus. But there are so many over so long a period – does it hurt to look and see if the trainers can do something different?

  20. SEAT.5.F.2 09/23/2008 at 9:29 AM #

    Ev-

I wasn’t discounting your notion, contrary it makes sense to throw out notions here on this site because you get alot of sensible reactions.

My guess, though meaning squat, is that TOB is willing to accept nothing, question everything as is concerns of what he and his staff can do better.

Look at the bye week last year.

Look at the offense put into over the offseason.

If there is a way to combat these injuries they will seek it out. My gut tells me that our luck has just got to get better.

  21. Ismael 09/23/2008 at 9:37 AM #

Let’s stop bashing the Strength and Conditiong Program. Shea McKeen fell on NI’s leg, it happens, let’s get over the over-analyzing. Similar thing happened to Kushner.

The reasons i like our chances in this game:

1)USF has struggled against teams it should have put away
2)The way we played last week along the OL and at the skill positions
    3)Dwayne Maddox
    4) (main reason) All of the Florida kids on our team.

Point #4 should not be overlooked. As much as Andre Brown wanted to run the ball down the throats of EZU JUST because he was from Greenville. So will Eugene, Beck(props to superstuff), Jarvis Williams, Willie Young, Ray Michel. Remember how we used to beat FSU and inexplicably lose to some nobody the next week. Florida rivalries. These kids want to emasculate each other.

  22. ITwolf 09/23/2008 at 9:43 AM #

    Folks,

Strange deal on Wilson. If he did hurt his arm then it wasn’t during the game. Look at this video posted on Youtube. Having been an athletic trainer, I can tell you that if he had a shoulder separation or rotator cuff problems he WOULD NOT have been grapping hands up high after the game. And what’s the deal with Wright? I mean a pectoral muscle strain (and I didn’t see it at USC, was at the game). There’s something else going on. And Irving, remember he tweaked his ankle during William and Mary in the first half. If it’s the same ankle, it’s an old injury that got worse. Here’s the link for Wilson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiKg9j1FIIk

  23. Mark_Wolfpacker 09/23/2008 at 9:43 AM #

    From News and Observer:

In 10 career games, Beck has four touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. All four of his touchdown passes came against non-BCS conference foe Central Florida and FCS team William & Mary.

“He can wing it around,” O’Brien said. “We’re just going to have to tell him that we’re wearing the red jerseys on Saturday night, and we’ll be in good shape.”

  24. Mike 09/23/2008 at 9:50 AM #

This is unbelievable. I guess we fans need to do all we can to help the team.

BJD- your task this week is to make sure Beck gets his dozen Krispy Kreme’s each day.

VAWolf – you have the task of showing Maddox the Irving films.

RAWFS – find us a kicker – we dont need a punter this week. Either long TD’s or long INT’s.

Noah – your task is simple. You just have th remind us all how our 1 star players have developed into NFLers and choose which walk ons this week will rise to the occasion.

Fans – wear WHITE to the game – dont want Beck seeing red shirts in the stands and thinking its ok to throw to them.

  25. EverettBeez 09/23/2008 at 10:44 AM #

Mike – that last point for the Fans is too funny.
Seat.5 – point taken. Its nice to throw things out and have them intelligently discussed. Especially when folks who comment are actually reading the thread, and not just spouting off.
