Complete Meltdown for USF (No Wilson, No Irving)

Here’s the link – I have very little to say except are you f-ing kidding me?

Wilson, who threw three touchdown passes against the Pirates, suffered an undisclosed injury in the second half of the game but continued to play. He was evaluated on Sunday and O’Brien made the decision then to hold him out of this week’s game, which is slated to kick off at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU.

The coach also announced that starting sophomore linebacker Nate Irving, the team’s leading tackler, will also miss this weekend’s game with a lower leg injury. Irving suffered the injury in the first half of Saturday’s win over East Carolina. He attempted to return in the second half, but missed most of the rest of the game.

    Unbelievable

    has to be concussion related…….
that is the only thing that could be bad enough to go ahead and pull him out for saturday, but be something you couldnt see this past saturday after it happened.

Unless TOB is pulling a fast one and saving him for conference games and not wanting him to get beat up.

probably a little of both dbo, i saw him hit his head on that 4th and 1 run, but he hopped up pretty quick. But no reason to risk him in a non-conference game. With Beck getting a full week of reps hopefully he will be able to keep it close. Expect a heavy dose of running game to reduce the number of potential interceptions.

    Wow. Just wow.

This is NC State Athletics at its finest. Big victory with the promise of many more, followed by the rug being pulled out whilst the house collapses. I don’t know why God hates us…but he sure does.

I’m shaking my head like everyone else …

We know HB is potential high reward but high risk. I’m glad he has played some this year and this is at home. We know his mentality is
“Coach … I AM going to throw it downfield.”

ECU wasn’t supposed to end the way it did and that’s why you play em. Its gonna be mighty tough but I’ll be behind HB looking to shock the world and I won’t be booing regardless of outcome.

(back to shaking my head about RW …)

I sure hope its not concussion related. That would not be a good thing for this young, not good at all.

    I feel totally deflated.
Plenty of time to rally though.

gopack is it’s usual self in reporting the correct score of the William & Mary game. The score was 34-24 not 38-28.

Clearly hate to see Russell and Irving out for the USF game, but much better to hope for speedy recoveries and the long-term health of these young men. Hopefully, both will be ready to answer the bell for the next conference game. With the improved offensive line play and a week of reps, perhaps HB can avoid throwing any to the opponents.

    Son of a….

Look, somebody has to know of a decent witch doctor. Get him on the next damn plane into Raleigh, STAT!

  11. CStanley 09/22/2008 at 1:55 PM #

The two main guys we needed to beat USF, and now they’re gone.

Irving to keep Grothe in check, Wilson to keep USF’s athletic D in check.

    God-dammit.

  12. CStanley 09/22/2008 at 1:56 PM #

On a serious note, and of more concern…what is the prognosis for Irving & Wilson’s future?

  13. Rick 09/22/2008 at 2:03 PM #

What is the world? Pretty soon we will not be able ot field a team

  14. primacyone 09/22/2008 at 2:04 PM #

The Bulls only have 3 interceptions through their first 4 games!!!!!

I’ll be satsified with the outcome of the game if we throw less than 3 interceptions. Give’em hell HB!

Get well real soon boys, sure was fun seeing everyone playing as a team.

Beck would make a great Arena Football QB, IMO. Would love for us put this game on at the RBC.

  16. BJD95 09/22/2008 at 2:09 PM #

Best case scenario – TOB is just being extra cautious with the BC game in mind. It’s a winnable game, and one that we really need. I am fine strategically writing off USF in order to push all in against those jerks.

Note that I have no inside info suggesting this to be the case. I’m just hoping. If it’s a second concussion, then I think we have to shut Wilson down for the year (and pray for 1 ACC win).

If Beck goes down, the back up plan should be direct snaps to Brown, Eugene, and/or Graham. Or just punting on 1st down.

The good news is that per WRAL RW has a shoulder injury… NOT CONCUSSION RELATED!!! 🙂

I too think maybe there is a little gamesmanship going on. We should know more Thursday. Until then we won’t know much.

“The good news is that per WRAL RW has a shoulder injury… NOT CONCUSSION RELATED!!!”

That’s GOOD news? I mean, yes, it’s good that it’s not concussion-related. But a shoulder injury to a QB is not something I would call good news. Here’s hoping it is minor, and not on his throwing arm.

  19. ChiefJoJo 09/22/2008 at 2:18 PM #

Am I suprised? Yes… but I’m over it at this point. We could lose the entire starting 22 and I wouldn’t blink. There’s nothing to be done about it anyway. It’s not the end of the world.

At least we can prepare with Beck getting all the #1 reps in practice this week. You never know. As much as Wilson directed the ECU victory, all lot of other guys stepped it up on Sat: G. Bryan, TJ Graham, Jarvis Williams, Andre, the OL, McKeen, Eugene, etc. We might be able to keep it close vs USF, and then hopefully guys get healthy for the remainder of conference play.

    *sigh*

  21. DFMo 09/22/2008 at 2:22 PM #

Glad to hear it could be shoulder over concussion (lesser of 2 evils). Direct snaps worked exceedingly well for Miami yesterday and can be effective. And I just would never agree that TOB or the coaching staff would choose not to play someone and save them for the conference games. You need 6 wins, not the conference championship. Would you rather say you beat USF or BC (but hey, it was a conference game). If a kid is ready to play and can help the team, he plays.

So the thought crossed my mind … who would I rather have this week?

Beck at home against USF or Paulus on the road at Miami?

    Discuss amongst yourselves …

  22. sf59 09/22/2008 at 2:27 PM #

another concussion injury could be the end of football for RW… so yes bradelyb that is good news

RW injured the shoulder in the 2nd Qt and played the rest of the game FWIW

  23. bradleyb123 09/22/2008 at 2:30 PM #

I’ll take Beck over Paulus any day. We looked pretty good at receiver against ECU. With some newfound confidence, they can do a lot to make Beck look like a hero!

I don’t think the coaches would sit a healthy kid out just to save him for conference games. But if he is SLIGHTLY injured, and the next game is a non-conference game, I could see benching him to let him make a full recovery for the more important conference games.

Irving has a high ankle sprain. Not good.

  24. ChiefJoJo 09/22/2008 at 2:35 PM #

Hey, just an idea… what about a “wild hog” type spread option with Eugene and Andre this week vs USF? Andre takes the snap and Eugene is the sweep man. This week is the first time we will have both Andre and Eugene but not Wilson, and the Dolphins did it yesterday with R Brown and R Williams. Even a few times would be interesting. IMO we should run the spread option VERY minimally with Beck–mainly shotgun and I formation.

DFMo, I take Beck at home if given the choice, although the odds are against both. Beck has some experience, and IIRC, Paulus has little to none. I think Miami has a chip on their shoulder this year. They have plenty of talent, just young. I worry about playing them the last game of the season when all those frosh are essentially sophs.

  25. Trip 09/22/2008 at 2:47 PM #

This is the good lord telling us “No, you can’t have nice things.”

It HAS to be his non-throwing shoulder or there’s no way he would have stayed in. Whatever injury it is, it was good enough to play with, but not good enough to risk additional injury. I’m willing to bet this is to preserve his baseball career as ultimately he has a much better chance hitting the MLB than the NFL.

With Beck atleast we won’t get shutout… even if the score is 40-16 with 4 interceptions. I’m going to cheer “FUCK IT GO DEEP!” the entire game though.

What’s really going to hurt is Irving… gahhh. When Horner got his high ankle sprain he was out for a good 2-3 weeks.
