NCAAT Selection Thread

Naturally, UNC and Duke get cushy draws. Duke won’t play a good team before the Elite Eight. The other teams in their way? All are very weak relative to seed – #3 Xavier, #6 Purdue, #7 West Virginia, #10 Arizona. UNC doesn’t fare quite as well, despite their #1 overall seed. Still, only one decent opponent in their half of the regional bracket, #4 Washington State. I said “decent”, not good.

Our valiant Tigers’ path to the Sweet Sixteen goes through Villanova and Vandy. Kansas would be very tough to beat if OP’s Tigers are to top Rick Barnes’ best run at Clemson.

The only injustice I see is the omission of Virginia Tech. You will never convince me that any of Baylor, Soth Alabama, St. Joseph’s, Villanova, Arizona, or Oregon is as good as the Hokies. It;s certainly indisputable if you evaluate how each team is playing right now.

Any good columns out on the web analyzing the brackets? Can anyone post them if so?

    “Taking Miami over Virginia Tech?”

You mean, taking a team that that finished with three more total wins, a team that beat Duke and Clemson, over a team like the Hokies that beat absolutely no one?

  3. PAPacker 03/16/2008 at 7:38 PM #

    yes, and?

  4. wufpup76 03/16/2008 at 7:39 PM #

Wow, I haven’t thought about that Chapel Hill vs. OU game in a long time … the Stanford game I remember well though

I am an ardent Heel hater, but that ’99-’00 Heel team was one of my all time most hated teams (even more so than the Laettner Duke teams) … One name is all I need to think of … Mhaktar N’Diaye (spelling?)

Sorry for taking this post a little off topic …

    ^highstick,

I hear ya. I don’t know if it’s really dangerous or not, but I don’t think I’d be pointing it out if I was you.

Plus, please don’t start typing like me, your posts are generally legible right now.

The committee chair just came out and flatly said that Arizona State’s non-conference SOS is the primary reason they are out of the field …

Bilas and Vitale are having conniption fits … Vitale: “How do you justify it?!? How???”

By correctly pointing out that their non-conference schedule was s*it, Vitale … that’s how

It amazes me how these coaches keep coming back to the same arguments each year …

    wufpup,

I don’t know who this makhtar n’diaye you speak of is. I don’t think he played at UNC.

btw, if’n he did play (which he didn’t), his last year was 1998.

The 99-00 heels had Easy Ed Cota, Jason Capel, Joe Forte, Kris Lang, JP, Ron Curry

^To ASU’s defense, the fact that Arizona got in over them is a joke. They finished below the Devils in the conference, same # of wins, and ASU swept them. That’s just wrong. But I don’t think either deserved a bid.

  9. JeremyH 03/16/2008 at 7:49 PM #

why Kris Lang did not make it in the nba is beyond me. also he and hansjobrough have very similar games.

Bilas: “They give the mid-majors a break” … No, they don’t, Jay … Way to s*it on an entire subset of teams Jay while giving them zero credit for being any good at all

Pretty blatant power conference bias by Bilas there …

UGa probably did take Va Tech’s bid, but the Hokies still shoulda been an at large…somewhere, somehow. The SEC was low rated in the Sagarin and RPI and yet get 6 teams in (even 5 is a sretch given UGA’s miracle run) — and look at Kentucky with their weak OOC and somehow 11-4 record within!?!?!? And what a joke with the Big East and 8 teams, what with all of those bottom feeders the middle teams fed off of.

It’s seems the unbalanced scheduling does the ACC in while other conferences use it to their advantage. Swofford and the ACC need to do a better job of protecting their own (instead of just the two media darlings, Duke and UNC).

3 more wins? So what. VT beat Miami on Friday by 14 then lost to UNC, the number one team in america at the buzzer. My whole point is that VT should get much stronger consideration as opposed to what Miami may have done in two or three games earlier in the year. And oh by the way, many of those wins were against Florida Southern, Alabama State, Morgan State, Florida International, North Florida, NC A & T, UPenn(13-18) among others.

“btw, if’n he did play (which he didn’t), his last year was 1998. ”

ooops, pretty poor memory by me … I know (or thought) an N’diaye team went to the Final Four but apparently got the years mixed up …

  14. BJD95 03/16/2008 at 7:53 PM #

ASU would have been the lowest RPI team to get an at-large bid EVER. I’m glad that the committee put their foot down over nonconference SOS. They did the same thing to Alabama about 5 years ago. About time for a refresher lesson.

Illinois and Nebraska were bad OOC losses, too. I think Bilas is just mad that he can’t take another shot at NC State re Sendek. Fuck him.

“why Kris Lang did not make it in the nba is beyond me. also he and hansjobrough have very similar games.”

Well, other than tyler being quicker, stronger, more athletic, a better shooter, a better defender, and about 10X the heart, they are very similar ;>

Seriously, Lang had some injury problems that really took away his athleticism. He was a better player as a freshman than he was as a senior.

Wow … Pittsburgh is Bob Knight’s pick for National Champion … I’ll give him credit for going out on the limb a bit

  17. highstick 03/16/2008 at 8:00 PM #

First thing I got from our golf pro(former UNC golf team member)
yesterday morning was “I’ll bet you guys wish you had Sendek back”. My response was “I rather drop the basketball program than to accept him as our savior”!

  18. BJD95 03/16/2008 at 8:00 PM #

Chris – I think that Vitale picks Duke’s matchups, not Katan. Even Katan would blush at asking for a draw as easy as they got.

The strength of UNC’s region could help them, if somebody else knocks off Tennessee. That’s the matchup the Holes need to avoid (they are a better shooting version of Clemson).

Indiana has rolled over and played dead since Sampson left. No reason for that to chane now. Plus, every team in the Big Ten sucks. The ACC proved that in the fall.

  19. Wulfpack 03/16/2008 at 8:02 PM #

“VT beat Miami on Friday by 14 then lost to UNC, the number one team in america at the buzzer.”

And VT beat who? And they lost to Richmond? Old Dominion? Penn State? VT and Miami split this year — a wash. The Hokies also lost to UNC by 39…That counts, too.

  20. PAPacker 03/16/2008 at 8:04 PM #

    Pittsburgh is very good.

  21. PAPacker 03/16/2008 at 8:05 PM #

By the way, some good news, Julius Mays and Scott Wood are playing in the Indiana state championship. Mays had around 27 in the semi’s. Wood had 13.

  22. chris92heel 03/16/2008 at 8:06 PM #

BJD, the tennessee team i’ve seen since the memphis game has little chance against UNC, provided that tywon is reasonably healthy. They like to run and they don’t defend. They got sliced by a terrible USuCk team and Arkansas in the SEC tourney. I can’t remember the last team that tried to run with Carolina that didn’t eventually get run out the gym.

    Anybody watching ESPN2?

    It’s >>>THE NIT<<< selections!!!

    WOW!!!

  24. wufpup76 03/16/2008 at 8:29 PM #

^That top 300 nonconference SOS got Arizona St. a coveted #1 seed in the NIT tournament

    🙂

Texas in the Houston Regional will at least give me some cause for interest. Teams that might have deserved to be left out – Baylor & UK.
