NCAAT Selection Thread

Naturally, UNC and Duke get cushy draws. Duke won’t play a good team before the Elite Eight. The other teams in their way? All are very weak relative to seed – #3 Xavier, #6 Purdue, #7 West Virginia, #10 Arizona. UNC doesn’t fare quite as well, despite their #1 overall seed. Still, only one decent opponent in their half of the regional bracket, #4 Washington State. I said “decent”, not good.

Our valiant Tigers’ path to the Sweet Sixteen goes through Villanova and Vandy. Kansas would be very tough to beat if OP’s Tigers are to top Rick Barnes’ best run at Clemson.

The only injustice I see is the omission of Virginia Tech. You will never convince me that any of Baylor, Soth Alabama, St. Joseph’s, Villanova, Arizona, or Oregon is as good as the Hokies. It;s certainly indisputable if you evaluate how each team is playing right now.

    Repost of what I put in the other thread since it was closed right after 😛

    Damn, Vtech missed out on the bid. But so did ASU, so I guess there is justice somewhere.

    Duke has an extremely easy path to the round of 16, while UNC probably has the hardest overall bracket with Indiana, Louisville and our other Orange team Tennessee in their way to the elite 8. I could see any of those 3 teams knocking them out and it would be an extremely high-tempo exciting matchup with UNC/Tenn.

    I think Clemson can make it to the round of 16, and they do match up well with Kansas so here’s hoping.

    Poor Davidson… they can pull out the first matchup with Gonzaga but I don’t see them doing the upset on Georgetown, Hibbert is going to have a field day with them.

    Not only did Oregon get in, they got a #9 seed … surprising

    If Clemson can get there and they face Kansas I actually think they may have a decent shot … Would be a great match-up if it came to fruition

    Fact is Va Tech didn’t prove that they belonged. They had many opportunites and lost. The ACC only got 4 bids. If you are debating whether it should have been VT or Miami, Miami wins that debate hands down.

    As far as the overall picture, I think UNC and Duke have very easy paths to the Regional Final, but UCLA could be a bit much for the Devils. UNC will be making the Final Four. Tennessee is very overrrated and Hansbrough will have his way down low.

    It really should not make a hoot in hell, but Seth Greenberg didn’t help his own cause.

    Come on Bilas, how can ASU, losing 10 of their LAST fifteen when they’re supposed to be at their best, an RPI of 83, be more deserving than VT?

  5. wufpup76 03/16/2008 at 6:04 PM #

    I know why EVERY analyst says Arizona St. should be in, but it’s as if they ignore the non-conference SOS of OVER 300 and the BAD losses … get off Herbert’s jock please

    Bob Knight stumping for a field of 128 teams … Please God no

    Must. Stop. Rewarding. Crappy. Mediocre. Power Conference teams

  6. turfpack 03/16/2008 at 6:05 PM #

    Greenburg pissed off the commmitee yesterday by calling them out-NOT A GOOD IDEA-YES THEY ARE BETTER- SOMETIMES IT IS BEST TO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT.

  7. BJD95 03/16/2008 at 6:05 PM #

    Clemson/Kansas and Carolina/Tennessee would be awesome basketball games.

    Indiana has mailed it in for the year. UNC would beat them like a rented mule. The good teams in that regional are in UT’s half of the draw (exact opposite of Duke’s lucky-assed situation).

    “Naturally, UNC and Duke get cushy draws.”

    So the selection committee is part of the UNC/Duke conspiracy along w/ the media and the refs?

  9. BJD95 03/16/2008 at 6:09 PM #

    The pansy-assed scheduling finally did Sendek in on selection Sunday. Was bound to happen sooner or later. I would take out Baylor or St. Joe’s and put in VT.

    Who is the chairman saying was the last team left out? I really think VT is the only team with a legit gripe.

  10. wufpup76 03/16/2008 at 6:09 PM #

    Seth Greenburg on Espn doing some more crying and saying “Expand the tournament!”

    uggghhhhhhhhhhh

    We don’t need anymore Jim Boeheims … Play good teams and beat some of them … pretty simple

  11. redfred2 03/16/2008 at 6:10 PM #

    Seth Greenberg, no doubt that you are very good coach but I hope you learned a little something today.

    Yes Seth, and also Bobby Knight, why don’t we just eliminate the regular season altogether, and just let everybody in the NCAAT.

  12. BJD95 03/16/2008 at 6:10 PM #

    Duke gets an easy draw. Every. F-ing. Year.

    To be fair, UNC earned a favorable draw by winning the ACC regular season and tourney. I just hate Carolina.

  13. Wulfpack 03/16/2008 at 6:12 PM #

    Greenberg needs to shut his mouth. Let me put it simply to you – you did not beat anybody. You came close, but you did not win.

    Conference NCAA Tournament Current Streaks:

    Clemson – 1;
    Miami – 1;
    UNC – 5; and
    Duke – 13.

    Conference NCAA Tournament Last Appearance:

    BC -2007;
    Georgia Tech – 2007;
    Maryland – 2007;
    Virginia – 2007;
    Virginia Tech – 2007;
    NC State – 2006;
    Wake Forest – 2005; and
    Florida State – 1998.

    Duke and UNC were dead set against expansion because they thought it would hurt basketball. The early returns are that they were somewhat correct in their belief – it has hurt everyone except Duke & UNC. Try to make a case for a Top 35 program for any of the other 10 teams based on the last few years and looking to the future.

    We have two great programs in the ACC and another ten that might as well be collectively called the Washington Generals.

  15. BJD95 03/16/2008 at 6:13 PM #

    The tourney doesn’t need expanding. I listed six teams who could easily have been left out with no rational basis to complain.

    Having watched VT play the past few weeks, it was clear that they were peaking and dance-worthy. At the same time, they did have a poor performance against very weak OOC slate. You can’t do that.

  16. wufpup76 03/16/2008 at 6:13 PM #

    “So the selection committee is part of the UNC/Duke conspiracy along w/ the media and the refs?”

    Of course they are!!! What’s wrong with you?? Don’t you know anything?!?! 🙂

  17. turfpack 03/16/2008 at 6:14 PM #

    UNX will make it to the final four-Duke will have a hard time and want make it-Clemson has alot of confidence and will make it to the sweet 16 maybe final 8-just a opinion for what it’s worth.

  18. highstick 03/16/2008 at 6:14 PM #

    But, but IC says the Heels got “screwed”! Like I said, “no signs of intelligent life over there”!

    I was really pulling for VT. One of my little buddies who was an Asst with Odom is now up there.

  19. BJD95 03/16/2008 at 6:15 PM #

    Ultimately, I think the lousy performance by ACC teams last year was the nail in the Hokie coffin.

  20. highstick 03/16/2008 at 6:16 PM #

    From the previos thread, Fred…I think you and think alike. Is that dangerous?

    Gosh, maybe we need to get Obama as the Chancellor so we can get some real change.

  21. LRM 03/16/2008 at 6:21 PM #

    This discussion about expanding the tournament to 128 teams is absolutely ridiculous. Unless you let everyone in, then you’ll always have a bubble. All you’ll accomplish is to water-down the best tournament format in sports. Do we really want teams with .500 records — or worse, losing records — on the bubble?

    And Arizona State didn’t get in. That’s hilarious. Steve Lavin will need to be sedated.

  22. turfpack 03/16/2008 at 6:21 PM #

    THE big east got 8 teams-Acc got 4 teams -YEA that’s about right.

  23. wufpup76 03/16/2008 at 6:23 PM #

    “And Arizona State didn’t get in. That’s hilarious. Steve Lavin will need to be sedated.”

    I wanted to st*angle Steve Lavin w/ his Arizona State / Pac-10 bias

  24. JeremyH 03/16/2008 at 6:23 PM #

    UNC is playing their regional games in Raleigh, does that mean the RBC? how messed up is that.

  25. Trip 03/16/2008 at 6:25 PM #

    I’m gonna say UT or Louisville knock out Carolina.

    UCLA will knock out Duke. There’s no way Duke can handle Love.

    While our Tigers will probably get knocked out by Kansas, but if not by them, then without a doubt to Georgetown. I don’t think they can take out both of those teams back to back.

    Miami will lose to Texas… although it should be a fiery matchup between Mcclinton and Augustine.
