Heads don’t nod off with Lowe speaking

State #35

Coach Lowe speaks at the Raleigh Sports Club and Dane Huffman has the coverage at this link. There are so many good nuggets in this piece that we aren’t going to share any of them.

Noah, whatever happened with the Raleigh police and our assistant coach??? Has that gone away or still in process????

    PackerIn Russia,

Sto etta? Etta El Sid!!!!!!! Or something like that, my little bit of knowledge of the Russian language is better spoken rather than trying to write it in English.

“We just need a few breaks. No more injuries this year and a top tier recruit from the 2009 class and we should be sitting in good position for the next few years. 2010 is off to a great start with CJ Leslie already.”

Wall, Kelly, Favors, Johnson, Hibbert ….. a few of these in ’09 would be nice. Especially Wall & Kelly since they are in Raleigh

  5. TNCSU 10/12/2007 at 12:53 PM #

There’s a couple of impressive ’09 prospects that are not “listed” that we are looking at also — I’ll leave it at that. Scout.com is about 60% correct….

    Man, I’m psyched!

  6. EverettBeez 10/12/2007 at 12:54 PM #

thanks Noah, as always a font of knowledge. the wheels of justice turn very slowly, which is often a good thing when you think about it.
I’d too would like to know what happen with the police officer & the Coach.

  7. McPete 10/12/2007 at 1:10 PM #

    TNCSU,
don’t leave it at that. Who else are they looking at? It couldn’t be a secret forever, for obvious reasons. while i realize the coaching staff can’t name names, there’s nothing wrong with a little fan speculation.

“There’s a couple of impressive ‘09 prospects that are not “listed” that we are looking at also”

Howell, Ross, Hamilton, Nixon, Richardson… who else?

  9. McPete 10/12/2007 at 1:18 PM #

is richardson DJ Richardson, the guy already committed to Illinois?

  10. PamlicoPack 10/12/2007 at 1:45 PM #

I believe the altercation between the cop and Coach Harris was quietly disposed of by RPD and the DA after it came out in the paper that this cop had some, er, anger management issues as well as prior complaints against him, but I have no first hand information…

  11. PamlicoPack 10/12/2007 at 1:51 PM #

on another note, was I asleep when they announced Justin Gainey was going to join our staff?

I LOVE it that five of the seven people on staff played basketball at NC State…and one of the two that didn’t (Coach Harris) is THE senior guy on the staff, and the last guy (Strickland) coached High School here…and is a part of the legendary DeMatha connection…

Sid’s son is looking at serious time.

  13. MadWolf92 10/12/2007 at 2:55 PM #

Actually, I think Monte is the senior guy on staff, but Larry’s certainly been around here the longest.

  14. RedTerror29 10/12/2007 at 3:21 PM #

Monte is the associate head coach and #2 man. It says something that Larry Harris was willing to take a demotion (on paper) to return.

This is the first time in a long time that I’ve entered a season thinking ‘something big could happen.’ For so long it was scrambling for 20 wins, a mid finish in the ACC then a 7-10 seed in the NCAA. After Hodge’s soph year I thought the same thing, then Powell went pro and it was back to the usual.

Not to be Debbie Downer here, but how is Sid’s rhetoric any different than Chuck’s from the early days? The proof is in the W-L column and most of us were thinking like this about Chuck in 2001. He’s one of us too. I get into this debate with buddies all the time — just chill. This is why the Wolfpack Nation is perceived to have such a persecution complex. We let our emotions race at the first sign of success, then get crushed when it falls apart and blame everyone but ourselves for buying the BS.

Nothing gets my blood up like watching a State game. But this whole “yay we’re good” followed by “oh no, we suck again” cycle is numbing. The team is very talented, but very young. There will be a collapse or two and an upset or two. But talking Final Four and putting that kind of pressure on a young team is a mistake that we will watch play out, I’m afraid, in excruciating fashion.

i dont recall anyone saying that or thinking that before hearing the comments from gg and t. smith. it would be different if we the fans were putting that pressure on the team. but it is the young team who is putting that kind of pressure on themselves, so — just chill.

Many more pieces are required for a top 10 football program than a top 10 basketball program. There are only and handful of great football programs and they have been that way for 50 years or more. The idea that State, Carolina, Wake or just about any other ACC school to consistently be a top football program is more or less a pipe dream. This doesn’t mean ACC schools can’t have a couple of great season from time-to-time but to think NC State will ever be a ‘football school’ is ridiculous.

On the other hand there is absolutely nothing that can prevent State from being one of the best basketball schools in the country… Again.

  18. MadWolf92 10/12/2007 at 5:59 PM #

Except of course that *anyone* can just about do it. Yes, it’s harder on an absolute scale to construct a great football program. But you can add a great player to just about *any* basketball team, and they can become a great basketball team.

If you manage to create a great football program, the thing just about (just about) runs itself.

If you manage to create a great basketball program, you CANNOT sleep. It requires constant, constant, constant vigilance to keep bringing the players in, keep the excitement up, keep the machine going. They fell asleep at Carolina (at *Carolina*) for a few years, and they won 8 games in a season. Them being Carolina, they were able to turn it back up with relatively little effort.

  19. MadWolf92 10/12/2007 at 6:05 PM #

I guess what I’m saying is that the *entry* to being a great basketball program is lower than being a great football program, but the *maintenance* is much higher, because the competition is so great.

Football is cars. Ford, BMW, Toyota. Great stability on the industry leaders.

Basketball is e-commerce. Google, Pets.com, Amazon, WorldCom. Things can (and do) change quickly and often.

PacknSack, there are many reasons to be excited, but mainly we’re excited because we have already seen LEGITIMATE improvement in the same bunch of kids that too many Wolfpack fans had already written off prior to the start of season last year.

  21. golf76 10/12/2007 at 6:25 PM #

Having sat on the sidelines in 1974 when State broke UCLA’s streak, and having lived in Houston in 1983 when we went all the way, I have to say that these times make me smile. I haven’t been this charged about Wolfpack B-ball since I saw David Thompson take a quarter off the top of the back board and leave two dimes and a nickel in change. Mark my words — Great things to come!

Yes, the easier it is to rise, the easier it is to fall.

    McPete,
Sorry, can’t really name names or be more specific. Yes, Richardson committed to Illinois, but I don’t think we were going that hard after him. There are some top tier players in ’09 that we’re after, and have good chances with. I think a good season will help recruiting some of those top players. Yes, some of those players we are interested in are listed on Scout and/or Rivals, but some — for different reasons — are not.

  24. redfred2 10/12/2007 at 6:49 PM #

Astral, just keep on going, I’ll gladly remind you of these posts later on.

Big news from the N&O: Tyler Hansbrough is going to add a new element to his game: talking. Yes an entire article devoted to how Godzilla is going to try to talk when he is playing. Captain America quoted as saying “It’s going to be one of the more difficult challenges that I’ve had.” Hey, big guy, we all remember that important part of our lives and how hard it was. Of course for most of us it happened while we were closer to 2 years old, but we’re talking pure basketball genius here. Who has time to talk? Talk about player development–first walking, now talking. I hear chewing gum is up next. If Ol’ Roy can get potty training knocked out before graduation, not only should he be up for Coach of the Year, but he should also replace K in those American Express commercials.
