State #35

Coach Lowe speaks at the Raleigh Sports Club and Dane Huffman has the coverage at this link. There are so many good nuggets in this piece that we aren’t going to share any of them.

    Awesome, just awesome.

Sendek won games and recruited good players, but he never stirred the fan base’s emotion the way Lowe can.

That’s one man’s opinion, but here’s a more accurate summary:

Sendek won bunches of C-level games and a good many B-level ones, but you could count the A-plus wins he had on one hand.

    Scott Fowler, Charlotte Observer

Racking up 20 wins against mostly weak opponents with a poor record against good opponents doesn’t get me excited. Based on the many reports that I’ve seen in print concerning what it takes to get State fans excited, I must have been the only State fan that got excited when Dick Sheridan was coaching at State.

Valvano used to say that people only laugh at a coach’s jokes when he is winning. Style rarely wins out over substance for long.

Man, this guy makes me giddy. This team makes me giddy. I can’t stand it, it feels so wrong.

I hadn’t noticed that Dane Huffman was back in the area. I always liked his reporting when he was with the N&O.

Last I heard of him, he had been shipped off to the hell hole that is Augusta, GA.

Depth doesn’t only come in the form of the next class of new basketball players, it also sums up what was gained in the new head coach. His feelings for NC State probably revolve mainly around basketball, but they also run much deeper. I’m warning some of you younger folks out there, this is THE COACH who will turn a lot of you into stubborn and sentiment Wolfpack fans who will not settle for second best. Kinda like me.

If Lowe takes the nation by storm, or not, this is what NC STATE basketball is all about.

Coach Lowe “gets it”. He really understands what Wolfpack basketball was and can be once again.

Examples of this are the comments from his players and his recruits.

Liked the bit at the end at looking for games with UCLA Kentucky and Florida.

    Hopefully those get nailed.

I hope it continues because Lowe appears to bring both style and substance. Maybe people will figure Coach Lowe out in the next several years, but IMO we went from having a bottom-tier to mid-tier game coach to one that can manage a game and his players as well as anyone in the ACC. He has a very strong staff and it appears that his staff is strong than any Herb ever had at NC State(and he had some good assistants over the years).

We just need a few breaks. No more injuries this year and a top tier recruit from the 2009 class and we should be sitting in good position for the next few years. 2010 is off to a great start with CJ Leslie already.

If you believe the 6-10 weeks to be true than that would mean we get Javi & MJ around December 18th (last day of exams) so both could be ready for the Davidson game on December 21st.

We would have 5 games to get them ready for the start of the conference schedule (UNC).

I was trying to avoid responding so that I wouldn’t end up with the Tarhole blue background, but I decided…what is better than typing about NC State hoops and the Tarholes being relegated to the background.

Coach Lowe has us on the pathway to success. I am excited about the upcoming season and seeing our talent on display.

I don’t know if any of you noticed, but CJ Leslie has transferred to Word of God Academy and will be playing with our top recruiting target for 2009 John Wall. I hope they become best friends.

    The excitement continues to build.

Best news is that Sid is losing some weight. The events at half time of the UNC game scared me last year.

I was shocked w/ well our offense looked at times last year. It will be interesting to see how we play D this year.

Wow! Just Wow!! My question is wonder what Fowler’s response was to him when he asked the question?

Not 5 minutes ago, I made a comment to my wife about how the Baby Blue fans are going to handle getting beat on a regular basis by the Pack! It’s going to “destroy their world”!

  14. rkw 10/11/2007 at 10:17 PM #

    highstick says:

My question is wonder what Fowler’s response was to him when he asked the question?

FWIW, according to the article, quoting Sid, it was Fowler that asked the question:

“Then one day we were talking and Lee said, ‘What about you? What’s your situation?’ I said, ‘Oh … Let me check.’”

  15. highstick 10/11/2007 at 10:34 PM #

Sorry I misread that. I’m obsessing over South Carolina’s potential for beating the goat crap out of the Tarholes Saturday. My “so called” Tar Heel friend who invited me says I can’t say anything to offend his “whine and cheese” fans. I went to work today and all I heard was Spurrier bashing and how he was going to try to run the score up on them. Funny, when they are running up and down the court dunking on other basketball teams, it’s cute to them. But, put the shoe on the other goat’s foot and it’s a different story.

Sorry for that tirade, but…..! Hopefully it’s going to be fun to be a State alum and a Gamecock fan in Kenan on Saturday! Last time I was there was when they pulled the TA fumble trick and I’m ready to get even!

  16. OwenDorm83 10/11/2007 at 10:59 PM #

To repeat what someone said earlier – Sid gets it.

  17. packwolf90 10/11/2007 at 11:21 PM #

highstick i’ll be up there pullin of the gamecocks too. We’ll be the ones in the hardhats and State RED. if anyone else is going wear your state gear. it would be awsome if we could get a good amount of red in there. carolina’s lucky they play the cocks this year cuz without the state game they don’t have a game to extremely inflate their attendance…..they’d probably do it anyway though.

the JJ HIckson interview was awesome. I like that kid, he said things like “i’d love to graduate from NCState and make my grandmom proud”…(homer simpson drooling sounds of ‘4 years of JJ Hickson’.)

The best thing he said was…”we’ve been looking at the schedule and we can’t wait for the UNC game…” that’s what i like to hear, not that crap from the unmentionable coach who said things like “this is just another game” (gag)

  19. mafpack 10/12/2007 at 9:44 AM #

When Sid referenced JJ Hickson with this comment, I actually laughed out loud here at my desk. I love it!

“You’re really going to like him. I really like him,” Lowe said as the room chuckled. “He did a move yesterday at practice. I said, ‘Did you all see that move?’ Coach [Quentin] Jackson said, ‘No, did you see your face drop?’”

  20. highstick 10/12/2007 at 10:10 AM #

Packwolf, fantastic that you’re going. My Tarhole friend is actually taking me in to the Carolina Club for lunch. I’ll also probably wear some garnet and red. I made a stop in Columbia the other day to buy me a Gamecock t shirt and may wear my NC State visor(for Spurrier).

The media has really been blowing up the 1989 game to tick off the Heel fans. They are expecting him to try to run up the score. Based on the Kentucky game, I don’t think he’ll do that if he gets the opportunity, unless the Tarholes do something to make him mad on Saturday. Actually, I hope he gets the opportunity and does it. It could get really ugly with their fans though.

Aren’t they claiming “sell outs” for the last 3 games though???

  21. noah 10/12/2007 at 10:27 AM #

Does anyone remember….was the 1989 UNC-Dook game on TV? Our game with Dook was and the Clemson game was as well (that was the one that “won” the ACC title for Dook). But I’m trying to remember if the Dook-UNC game was.

I remember the picture. I remember reading about the game in the paper. And I SEEM to recall watching it on TV…but I might be confusing it another game.

  22. EverettBeez 10/12/2007 at 10:41 AM #

What I love about El Sid is that his enthusiasm is relatively restrained and deep – not wild. After a year its gone great. I really hope it goes well for him, both of our school, but also for him personally.

VaWolf – your points about style over substance, and only laughing when the coach is winning are spot on. No better example of that then Coach Amato.

I hear there is a a rib cook off saturday at Kennon as well.
I did read they’d sold out all their home games thus far, and this is a sell-out too – how ever that is defined. (All the cheese platers are reserved Sir.)

Hey – I need everyone’s prayers and good vibs as my Old Miss Rebels take on the Carolina SEC, Alabama. We are on regional at noon, est. We took them to over time last year, and I believe we’ve got a good, but hard shot. I’ll drink a beer for everyone of ya’ll if we win!

  23. EverettBeez 10/12/2007 at 10:41 AM #

On a side note – how did things turn out with Sid’s son?

  24. noah 10/12/2007 at 10:47 AM #

He’s out on bond and presumably, waiting for trial.

  25. PackerInRussia 10/12/2007 at 11:32 AM #

Sid doesn’t “get it”; he is “it”
