Yes, we know it is early, but Joe Lunardi has NC State as a #2 seed in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

When is the last time NC State was projected pre-season as a top 3 finisher in the ACC and a #2 NCAA tournament seed? The 70s?

Granted, I don’t put much stock in the bracketology thing, but Dave Glenn has been going around saying we’ll be competing for the top of the conference.

We still lost Brackman, Simmons, 2/3rds of a recruiting class, and our senior PG, but yet after one season …

people believe in NC State right now.

nice article on Mays on PP

  3. Rick 04/11/2007 at 11:50 AM #

“That’s exactly what we have. ”

This statement shows me how little you know about the players coming in.

We are bringing in TWO point guards (a third combo guard) and TWO power/post players.

That is more than you know who brought in ten years.

We address our biggest needs. PG play, inside play and depth.

If you think height is the only thing that determines a center then you know even less about basketball than I thought possible.

“That is more than you know who brought in ten years.”

    why go there?

  5. ToddKeune 04/11/2007 at 2:33 PM #

Wow, have I been insulted? I’m sorry, should have said “I ‘respectfully’ disagree” with you Rick. I didn’t mean to be insulting! ALL of us on here are just speculating about things. None of us now for sure what will happen. Not ME, not YOU, or anybody. We all agree we SHOULD be a better team next year. We are ALL fans and hope for the best. We’re all on the same team. I respect that everybody here has an opinion, and we may disagree. I might disagree, but I don’t disrespect anybodys opinion.

So, what am I missing? TWO points? Who besides Javi?

JJ, and Tracy are both listed as PF on everything I have seen.
Thomas is SF. What am I missing?

Yes, we will have DEPTH at point. I’m just saying none of them were TOP 100 recruits. We have quantity, but what about quality? Believe me, I hope as much as everybody that one of them will step up and lead us to the top. As I said, Sid know more than the rest of us, and maybe a better scout of point than the ‘experts’. Maybe Javi is THE MAN?! Sounds like Sid has faith in Farley! We all have our fingers crossed.

Center- No, you don’t need to be 7′ to play 5. Heck. you don’t even need a 5. All you REALLY need is a good point. you can play with any combo of guards and forwards w/o a center. (basically what we do) I’m just saying ‘officially’ Lew is the only player listed on the roster as ‘c’. BC and Mac are both listed as ‘f’, but can and do play some 5. Horner and Gavin are both listed as ‘g/f’. I’ve only seen JJ listed as ‘pf’, but will likely end up doing some time at 5 also. Looks to me like several interchangeable players who can play 3 and/or 4 and/or 5.

Just my opinion. You can have yours, and I respect that.

Yes, we are adding good inside play, and we’ll be one of the deepest teams in the country. FULLY agreed.

We’re on the same team man! If you think I’m missing something, please respectfully expain what I’m missing. Insults not needed. Even if I disagree I’ll respect your opinion.

^^Pretty TALL points, whatever that’s worth.

Isn’t Crittendon at GT about 6’4″ or 6’5″? I really think at PG (offensively) you can be effective at just about any height (Spud and Mugsy did okay). It’s on the defensive side that smaller PG’s can be exposed.

BTW, CedarGrove, what did the article on PP mention about Mays?

  7. packbackr04 04/11/2007 at 2:43 PM #

yeah that article on Mays was great… its not premium mat’l so anyone can check it out. he is gonna be good.. it said he is shooting like 47% fg pct.

todd^ i would add marques Johnson to our list of possible points… he is also 6’5″ and sounds MORE like a shooiting guard than a PG but it sounds like he can do both…. one thing is for sure. he will turn it over less than Gavin did. no dig on Gavin as i have nothing but respect for the job he did this year but damn man. take care of the ball.

  8. CedarGroveWolf 04/11/2007 at 2:53 PM #

“So, what am I missing? TWO points? Who besides Javi?”

    Farnold & Javi are PG
    Johnson is a combo

“I’ve only seen JJ listed as ‘pf’, but will likely end up doing some time at 5 also.”

have you seen him play? He is a 5 in college & 4/5 in the NBA. Think beg Ced.

“what did the article on PP mention about Mays?”

    some tidbits:

“Mays was one of the most productive prep players in the state of Indiana during his junior season. The 6-foot-2 point guard averaged 19.6 points and 4.6 assists while shooting 46% from the field, 42% from 3-point range, and 82% from the foul line.

he verbaled to NC State over early offers from Indiana and Xavier. Cincinnati, Purdue, Notre Dame, and Penn State were expressing heavy interest. “

  9. Rick 04/11/2007 at 3:04 PM #

    Todd,
I was being unneedfully harsh. I am sorry.

I just have a problem with our recruiting class being labled as only Okay or good when it is one of the best we have had in decades from a numbers perspecitve but also from a “need” perspecitve.

JJ is a center. You can say he is only 6’9″ or that he is listed as a PF all you want but he will be a center. He will not play against anyone taller than him in the ACC. He has the inside game that makes him a center.

And we have two PGs Degand and Javi as well as a third option.

You must have extremely high expectations of recruiting to call this only a good class. This is a great class.

  10. TNCSU 04/11/2007 at 3:06 PM #

Thanks CGW, I actually went over to PP and didn’t need the premium to read that one!

  11. CedarGroveWolf 04/11/2007 at 3:10 PM #

“when it is one of the best we have had in decades from a numbers perspecitve but also from a “need” perspecitve”

we’ve had very good/great classes over the years, they just didn’t pan out for various reasons.

  12. Rick 04/11/2007 at 3:44 PM #

For the love of all that is holy.
Will you friggin drop it Cedar?

Saying a class is great is not bashing your diety. Accept the fact that no one on this site shares your adoration for the cacti one and you will be much happier in life.

  13. ToddKeune 04/11/2007 at 3:57 PM #

Oh Rick, I’m not the one who called it only an okay class of recruits, (i.e. ” cynical, (of) high expectations based on an okay year and an okay recruiting class gives me the willies” – that was PapaJohn. ) I agree w you, it is DARN GOOD!!!

I miss understood you about 2+ points. I thought you were refering to the incomming recruiting class as having two points. We just missunderstood eachother there. Maybe when you said “we are bringing in TWO points and a combo”, you were also including Farley and Johnson since they didn’t play last year? If nothing else, we have depth at point! Hopefully atleast one can step up and get er done.

    Peace Man!

  14. Rick 04/11/2007 at 4:20 PM #

It seems as if we are arguing about agreeing.

And yes I am including Johnson and Fegand in this class.

  15. ToddKeune 04/11/2007 at 4:43 PM #

^Cool, we’re on the same page.

  16. CedarGroveWolf 04/12/2007 at 11:40 AM #

“Saying a class is great is not bashing ”

saying it’s one of the best in decades is

  17. Cedarblockhead 04/12/2007 at 12:36 PM #

Herb brought NCSU to greatness. His classes were the best NCSU has ever recruited. Expect a drop off now.

  18. ToddKeune 04/12/2007 at 12:41 PM #

Your right Cedar. Not the first great class we’ve had in rescent memory.

Like Rick said, it really fills needs. We already had a great front line, now will have great depth. Even though they are already here, Rick counts Johnson and Farley as part of this recruiting class (thats why he is SOOO excited about the incomming class) – ‘technically’ not, but they will be ‘new commers’ as far as playing. Along w Javi, we have three guys fighting for the only spot w/o a returning starter. Johnson can also ad depth at 2.

Everybody is excited!! But I can also understand that history gives you reason to be ‘cautiously’ optimistic.

However, the more I think about it, the more excited I get!

  19. ToddKeune 04/12/2007 at 12:46 PM #

^my last post was to CGW, not blockhead.

Are you being serious blockhead, or jokeing? Yes, the Great One did bring in talent. I think Sid will do as well or better. W only one SR next year, don’t expect much right away, due to lack of open spots, unless others go early or transfer.

  20. CedarGroveWolf 04/12/2007 at 12:49 PM #

blockhead is a jokester. what a guy.

  21. ToddKeune 04/12/2007 at 1:11 PM #

I hoped the ‘brought us to greatness’ was a joke. But he did a fair job recruiting. Sid will do as well or better.

  22. Cedarblockhead 04/12/2007 at 2:53 PM #

5 years in the NCAA tournament = greatness

This despite the fact he could not keep his players here. Imagine how good we would have been with all the players that left. The great one was not even playing with a full deck.

  23. redfred2 04/13/2007 at 12:37 AM #

    “why go there?”

Again cedar, it’s about the “ten years” that Rick mentioned. We’ve heard from folks like you that NC State was maxing out and getting better than it could have ever hoped for with every player that your idol brought into the program. Sorry, that wasn’t any more the truth than the maxing out of their talent on the basketball court when they arrived.

But like all of us have said before, we’ve already heard your side for a decade. We’re just wondering if we are going to have to continue to hear it for another?

  24. CedarGroveWolf 04/13/2007 at 8:32 AM #

“We’ve heard from folks like you that NC State was maxing out and getting better than it could have ever hoped for with every player that your idol brought into the program.”

huh? Bringing in talent wasn’t a problem. Keeping it at NCSU & healthy was.

  25. Cedarblockhead 04/13/2007 at 9:53 AM #

“The Great One” brought in some of the best players to ever put on an NCSU uniform. They just did not have the gumption to stick with it when it got tough.

Can you imagine how good Adam Simmons would have been if he had stayed? He was the next Dirk Novitski. He cannot make players stay. They would get confused by the brilliance of the Princeton O and run like scalded dogs.
