Yes, we know it is early, but Joe Lunardi has NC State as a #2 seed in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

Wonder how Lunardi did in his March Madness brackets pool this past year?

I think NC State will be, next year, a five to seven seed in the NCAAs. Now I don’t claim to be an expert, but that’s where I generally think they’ll end up. It would be surprising to see a two or three seed. That would be a tremendous jump: tenth place in the conference to very high seed in the NCAAs.

Heck — I’d settle for a #2 seed in the ACC.

  7. PapaJohn 04/10/2007 at 9:50 AM #

GOOD GREIF!!! I REALLY OVERSLEPT!!! IS IT FEBRUARY ALREADY???

David Glenn on 620 The Bull this morning says that Tracey Smith will sign with us during the April signing period.

I’m a State fan and therefore cynical, high expectations based on an okay year and an okay recruiting class gives me the willies. We’re getting lots of recognition only because we were expected to be last in the league, and we weren’t.

I’m hoping for the best, and excited about the future, but that seems a little much to me. UCLA and Georgetown were #2 seeds! That’s a pretty big leap from two wins in the NIT and 10th place in the league.

I’ve got to go buy that red jacket …

How can you guys be wary of something we haven’t had in a long time? It’s not likely we’ve got a lot of experience blowing #2 seeds lately…..let’s take ownership of the fact that people with a lot of basketball knowledge are seeing our program on the rise, and learn how to deal with high expectations.

i hope tracy smith i a quality guy. nothing i have heard seems to contradict that, just the fact of what school he attends is causing some to think he may not be a character kid. But until Sid leads me to believe diferently then i am extremely excited. If smith is as good as it sounds like he is, we are stacked next year and we will go as far as degand and javi can take us. one or both of them need to step up and make some noise for us to make a run in the ACC/ NCAA tournies. But again, if his SATs are good and he gets into State then we want him right? Sid is on fire and needs to bust out the plaid jacket next year

If you think this class is simply “okay” you do not understand how important filling needs is.

Not only did Lowe get great players, he got them at positions we need them.

It is not like he is stock piling 6’7″ “interchangable” players.

  12. ToddKeune 04/10/2007 at 2:52 PM #

Rick, I could disagree more. Yes, we have a couple great guys comming in. But, ‘not stock piling 6’7″ guys’? That’s exactly what we have. Most say JJ is a 4. Other than Lew, (does he count?) we don’t have a true 5. I’ve read 100 people write (and I fully agree) about concerns at the point. We’re loaded w/ 6’5″ – 6’10” guys who can play 2 and/or3 and/or 4. We could use a good 5, and NEED a good point. Why does everybody get excited thinking about Beasley comming here? We NEED a top point. Sid needs to put the big push for Jai Lucas. With all starters (except point) returning, an already good bench, and JJ and Smith comming, the missing piece is a solid point. Would Beasly make us a better team? Probably. But just by adding depth to an already deep stable of 3s and 4s. Would Lucas make us a better team? ABSOLUTELY!! We are just a solid point away from being a legit. top ten team. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. This team will go as far as our point guard(s) will take us. If Javi, Degand et.al. (Lucas?) can step up, we will go far!!

  13. CedarGroveWolf 04/10/2007 at 3:14 PM #

JJ is a 5 in college.

    Javi & Farnold are PGs.

Jai wasn’t recruited heavily here for a reason. trust the staff.

  14. ToddKeune 04/10/2007 at 4:15 PM #

I will be the first to admit, Sid knows more than me!!

Not really worried about the 5. BIG guys excell in 1/2 court and can be a waste of space in up-tempo ACC, unless athletic (ie Duncan). We are fine with JJ, Mac, BC or whoever at the 5.

Like everybody else, my main concern is point. Who will run the show? Javi is 3 star recruit, Farnold 2 star, (Mays kid from IN comming in ’08 is 3 star). Fells may have to run point if nobody else steps up – 5 star, but not at point.

With the other 4 starters returning, an already strong bench, and two other top 50 recruits comming in, why can’t we land a top point. All the talent around him would make his job easy and make him look good! The final piece to the puzzle of what would be a top ten team.

But, like I said, Sid know best! As a former point, NCAA champ, NBA player, NBA coach, he is probably a better scout than the so-called experts. Maybe in Sids view, Javi and/or Mays are 4/5 star recruits. Let’s hope so.

Yes, I am excited about next season.

  15. lush 04/10/2007 at 4:17 PM #

    Todd,

The difference is that Beasley has expressed interest, Lucas has not. You cant just decide you need a player and then expect him to show up. We have a chance at landing Beasley, we should go for it

  16. packbackr04 04/10/2007 at 4:19 PM #

wow Cedar.did someone steal your IP address ?… nice post. i totally agree with you…..if Sid and towe and harris wanted jai. we would have targeted him and most assuredly we would not have offered javi like we did. i think sid is taking the V approach to the PG next year. He is gonna throw them all in there and let them show HIM who is best. competition. survival of the fittest. whatever you want to call it. the strongest player will reveal himself…. i would also say that Ben Mcauley is a 5 in college. i know he can AND DOES play some 4. but he isnt quick enough to guard some of the 4’s in the acc. just my take. some may disagree

  17. ToddKeune 04/10/2007 at 4:20 PM #

Looks like we wont wait long to get a look at Beasley…

This just in.. State will play in the Old Spice Classic over Thanksgiving weekend in Orlando.

Others include K-State, ‘Nova, S. Carolina, G. Mason, Central Fla, Penn State and Rider.

  18. PapaJohn 04/10/2007 at 4:48 PM #

I think we have to assume that Farnold will play point, at least to start with. He practiced with the team this year so knows the system which should give him a significant advantage over Javi. And Sid says he’s fast.

    (from gopack)
“Farnold [Degand], the point guard who was here this year and will be eligible, is an up and down guy; he can get the ball up the court as fast as anyone in the country I think. We’re going to need to take advantage of that, and we’re going to need guys to be in shape and be ready to run with him.”

  19. PapaJohn 04/10/2007 at 4:51 PM #

BTW, what’s the nickname for a guy named Farnold? We’ve got to come up with something.

  20. ToddKeune 04/10/2007 at 5:44 PM #

    Farley?

  21. redfred2 04/10/2007 at 6:35 PM #

    Todd,

You may be right, or maybe the coaches have seen they like already in Degand. I also believe that Johnson was promised before leaving UT and is expecting to see some early time at the point guard slot too. Then there is Javi to consider also. I know one thing though, either way, it’s a hell of a lot more fun to have options while trying to decide which is the right player for the position. It’ll be very interesting to track that development and see how it all shakes out as we drool over the start of next season.

  22. ToddKeune 04/10/2007 at 6:50 PM #

Papa – thanks! Like to hear Sid talk like that!

FYI – Farley is listed at 6-4

    Johnson – 6-5, 3 star recruit, #130 Rivals class of ’06

Pretty TALL points, whatever that’s worth.

  23. redfred2 04/10/2007 at 7:49 PM #

^Yeah, they are both tall for the collegiate level. I mainly want to see a competent ball handler who knows when to give it up. If he can take it to the basketball and put even more pressure on the defense that way, or has a decent outside shot, then even better. But a sure handed and confident ball handler is a must have.

  24. highstick 04/10/2007 at 9:59 PM #

Maybe it’s “He who hops while he travels”! “HWHWHT!

By the way, I broke out my new red blazer for Easter! Pissed off all the Tarhole fans at church. That is, if any of them showed up!

  25. CedarGroveWolf 04/11/2007 at 9:20 AM #

“wow Cedar.did someone steal your IP address ?… ”

I’ll always defend NCSU coaches. They know more than anyone on here.
Not worried about not getting a 5* for PG. We’ll have 3 options this season & 4 for next with Mayes ( who I think will rise inthe rankings). I’m more concerned if JJ & Ben leave at the same time & no other 5 in place (Lew doesn’t count IMO).
