ESPN: What we learned in Tampa

I’m going to tease with Bomani Jones’ second lesson first before delving into the real meat of this piece. Here is that second lesson:

The nation should be glad NC State didn’t make the NCAAs.”

Jones praises NC State and Sidney Lowe highly here:

My goodness, that team looked good. This wasn’t a charming Cinderella that got all the right breaks. This was a dangerous team.

The last thing anyone wants to face in the NCAA Tournament is a squad that has good athletes, two strong big men, a few capable ball handlers and a strong half-court game. After watching this team for four days, I couldn’t help but wonder how things would have been different if Engin Atsur, the player Gavin Grant referred to as their “general,” hadn’t missed 12 games with a bad hammy.

Also, consider what Grant said their approach was before the Duke game: “Don’t let anybody punk you.” A team with someone bold enough to say that from the dais of a postgame media session is a team to be reckoned with.

That’s great press, and Jones “got” it. Lowe’s team isn’t going to back down from a challenge. Lowe’s philosophy seems to be that shared by Patton and Frederick the Great: L’audace, l’audace, toujours l’audace! (Audacity, audacity, always audacity!) The red blazer is audacious. The up-tempo style is audacious. The declaration that the only goal for a 10th-seeded team is the championship or bust is audacious.

I’d like to take an aside and quote my favorite writer on Lowe’s audacity back when he was very sick with the flu and still donning the red blazer for a trip to Chapel Hill, because I think he was right in pointing out the foundation being laid for that leave-nothing-on-the-floor, 4-day effort that we saw this weekend and that Jones is praising now:

I want to underscore SFN’s point about Sid wearing the red jacket again. That’s just ballsy. It was ballsy enough at home. … Here Coach Lowe goes into Chapel Hill, with the frigging FLU, dons the red jacket again, and really gives everything he had. I doubt any of his guys will question him if he wants them to leave it all on the court. … [Further down] Mark my words, this will be a turning point on the season. Which way it turns I can’t say, but I’m optimistic.

Jimmy V’s “Dream” was audacious, too. But remember, a wise man once said, “Nothing can happen if not first a dream.”

Now back to Jones. His No. 1 will be a “shocker” to the Fowlers, Doyels, and the cultists:

1. Coaching is really important

NC State’s surprising run to the tournament championship game can be credited to many factors, but none more important than Sidney Lowe. …

This was all about the brilliant offense he runs, a motion scheme that still allows his players to use their individual talents to make plays. No team shoots 73 percent from the field (like the Pack did in the second half against Virginia) on luck and talent alone. The Wolfpack’s players were in great places at great times, and the reason for that was Lowe and his seemingly infinite reservoir of plays.

Let’s hit the highlights one more time: Coaching is really important — and — No team shoots 73 percent from the field on luck and talent alone. That means, by the way, that no team shoots 30 percent from the field on bad luck and lack of talent alone.

Wolfpack Nation is not so far removed from a time when we were told that the coach wasn’t to blame for players continually and reliably missing shots, game in and out (see Excuse No. 2). But I would like to point out that this year’s team shot 49.4 percent from the field, which was the highest shooting percentage since 1988-89.

That’s no accident. That’s coaching.

I like Horner because he’s a scrapper. He could become one of those “glue” players in the Brian Howard model.

    1) I don’t think Smith’s grades are quite as good as they were initially reported. I’d love to be wrong about that.

    2) I don’t think Mt. Zion has been accredited by the NCAA. (Parenthetical aisde…..I, for one, am glad the NCAA is cracking down on diploma mills. They do a horrible disservice to the kids (and the colleges) and they attract the absolute WORST kind of people into athletics.

This is just the 21st century version of street agents. You have a guy who is, for all intents and purposes, a con man looking to make a quick buck. Back in the day, he’d befriend the star athlete on the playground, offer him a little 10-cent wisdom, make sure he always had a $20 in his pocket. Then they take it on both ends during the college career. Want to recruit this kid? It’ll cost you. Want him to commit? It will cost you more. And then once the kid makes it to the NBA, there will be a nice kickback to the con man one more time.

Now, it’s the same kind of convict…only they are running “schools” and making sure their guy is academically qualified. End rant)

    We’ll find out…

“When we start to win on a regular basis, the opposition will turn Sidney’s red jacket into Chuck’s red shoes. You heard it here first.”

Let ’em. Just as with Chuck’s shoes and shades, nobody can say anything as long as you’re winning.

Sid could wear clown shoes and a floppy hat for all I care as long as we’re winning.

    From the si.com article:

“The layout of the sheet illustrates just how the committee uses the RPI — as an organizational tool, not a ranking system. ”

Then it must be a pure coincedence that past tournaments show that 75% of the teams are seeded with one position of what you would calculate using only RPI.

Interesting stuff, Noah. I’d heard some of the same things. While I do want some quality players, I don’t really want to go back to the Washburn days — is it true on 3 players graduated during Valvano’s tenure? I loved Jimmy V, but I find it hard to believe only 3 graduated…

  6. branjawn 03/13/2007 at 2:49 PM #

How’s everyones stock portfolios doing today? :o\

Can someone tell me why Mejia left NCSU for Drexel? Was it PT?

And why did Degand leave Iowa State. Oh, he was eligible to play since the end of the fall semester I believe. Not to second guess, but couldn’t we have used him?!?!? I know it would get messy having him have to play only a half year again sometime, but it’s interesting that he was available technically speaking. It’s not a long shot to think we might be dancing with a true backup PG to help us through some tough games.

“Sid could wear clown shoes and a floppy hat for all I care as long as we’re winning.”

exactly. all this crap about the jacket, chuck’s shoes, Herb’s personality is bs. Winning solves everything. None of those things would have mattered if Herb & Chuck won more. If Sid loses a lot of games, then the jacket means nothing. It’s all about the W’s. That’s a big part the media’s criticism of NCSU fans, some talk too much about the crap (personality, appearence, etc..) & the media thinks that’s a big deal, it isn’t, winning is.

Ok…Back from Tampa. Drove back in MH convoy yesterday…unfortunately MOST of the folks wore the light blue of UNX. However, they ALL were complimentary of Sid and the guys. They recognized that UNX almost lost…a call here…a shot there…etc.

As to the Herb Shrine and debate….I checked and I think that Herb’s record at ASU this year is 7 & 21….Here is the link to the page…NOTICE….THERE ARE NO UPCOMING EVENTS…

    http://thesundevils.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/sched/asu-m-baskbl-sched.html

I was NEVER a Herb Basher…he decided (I suppose) to leave and my only frustration was how Mr. IKB handled the hiring….Once Sid was the Candidate, I was a HAPPY camper again…

As to the Red Blazer and it use….I think Sid has it down….After reading about his wardrobe, I hope he has special riders on his Homeowners…that Blazer probably cost MORE than everything in MY side of the closet…

Someone brought up CTC…Quit KNOCKING HIM…he brought us spirit and we believed. We set near some FSU fans, well heeled as we were in the AFS area (equiv to the RBC Champion’s Club…except the food was BETTER and the booze was FREE….WHAT A CONCEPT). FSU is ELATED that CTC is back…and, I LIKE TOB, we will PROBABLY regret CTC’s going back to FSU. He will be Bowden’s confidence builder. FSU will prosper and the WPC will NOT be on the line for as big a settlement compared to CTC working out at Gold’s daily and collecting his WPC unemployment.

The glasses and shoes worked…Sid’s jacket worked…Valvano wore (in his words) something that some clowns would NOT be seen in public in. Sloan had that used car salesman’s plaid jacket…Sid’s CUSTOM TAILORED coat is high class and is NOT garnished with plaid pants…BUT…It the PLAID pants would have secured the win over UNX, then Sid would have had them on and the team would have been in plaid warm-up’s.

Good Luck to Sid and the guys tonight….this is the FIFTH game in 6 days….It will be TOUGH TONIGHT…gotta be tired. I’m tired…four days was a LOT of BB and the drive down and back was also long…logged 1400 miles in a MH convoy…

    GO PACK

  9. branjawn 03/13/2007 at 2:53 PM #

The jacket and shoes aren’t BS Cedar. Especially when Sid wore it to Chapel Hill. It says “we are not afraid to come into your house… bitches!”

  10. beowolf 03/13/2007 at 3:04 PM #

Roy Williams wore a blue blazer Sunday. For him and for Lowe, the symbolism of the special team-color attire is like when Clemson puts on the purple uniforms — it means the game is more than a mere game; it is a signature game that is key to the program.

Lowe didn’t wear the jacket every game. He wore it for only key games: (a) against our archrival, and (b) in the ACC Tournament. The blazer isn’t HIS signature style — it’s not his houndstooth hat like Bear Bryant, red sweater like Bobby Knight, or black-frame glasses like Joe Paterno. It’s his signal to his team and Wolfpack fans that he knows and agrees that those games are important. It’s solidarity, outreach.

It’s also a signal to the media, and a dare and a challenge to the other team. It’s audacity not for the sake of being audacious, but in that he’s stepping out on a limb. If it’s not just another game, then it’s not just another win — or not just another loss.

  11. LRM 03/13/2007 at 3:10 PM #

I think there’s A LOT of confusion about Costner setting the ACC Tournament scoring record, because he DIDN’T.

There’s a BIG TIME asterisk beside it that needs to read: “*Four-game scoring record”

Randolph Childress owns the ACC Tourney scoring record with 107 points in 1995; 40 (Duke); 30 (UVa); and 37 (UNC). For those of you that remember, that was an incredible tournament that Wake won in OT.

  12. CedarGroveWolf 03/13/2007 at 3:13 PM #

“The jacket and shoes aren’t BS Cedar.”

doesn’t mean anything if we lose. the man could wear blue every game if he won all of them

  13. Rochester 03/13/2007 at 3:14 PM #

    Branjawn,

I’m pretty sure Degand wasn’t eligible at all this year. Unlike Ferguson he didn’t transfer until then end of the school year last year, so his full year to sit out hasn’t ended yet.

I thought Mejia left because he didn’t play much as a freshman and probably figured he wasn’t going to get more PT. He came in as part of the Bennerman, Adam Simons, Justin Flatt class. At least Bennerman made it.

  14. tractor57 03/13/2007 at 3:15 PM #

I think the red jacket is great symbolism as is Roy Boy’s blue blazer. It is nice to once again have a coach who thinks any game with Carolina is special.
    Go pack!
And I’m sure TOB will also have a way to express similar emotions.

  15. TNCSU 03/13/2007 at 3:24 PM #

    Rochester,
You are correct about Degand, and probably Mejia!

  16. beowolf 03/13/2007 at 3:24 PM #

Cedar, everyone else who understands the symbolism disagrees with you.

But obviously “getting it” with respect to NC State tradition isn’t your forte. Read the other comments here. Absorb them. Put them in a something-or-other compartment and mentally chop wood till the idea forms a special relationship with your brain or something.

  17. redfred2 03/13/2007 at 3:27 PM #

    LRM

I thought Childress had that record but I never bothered to look it up. 26.75 per game, that’s tough.

  18. LRM 03/13/2007 at 3:31 PM #

    Three games. 35.7 ppg.

  19. cedarblockhead 03/13/2007 at 3:33 PM #

If Herb had worn a reb blazer he would have been hung by it.

He could do nothing wrong. All he did was WIN WIN WIN. And then leave.

You boys need to lay off the Herbivore. When he gets his players at ASU, he will once gain rule the first round of the NCAA tourney.

I bet he wears a SunDevil’s tie because that is so GQ.

  20. tractor57 03/13/2007 at 3:41 PM #

    cedar – BS

  21. Gene 03/13/2007 at 3:45 PM #

And why did Degand leave Iowa State.

Cyclones fired the coach, who recruited Farnold at the end of last season, so he was looking to transfer.

  22. lush 03/13/2007 at 3:46 PM #

i just wrote this to bomani jones:

I just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed your latest column about the acc tournament. Especially the praise that C-Lowe and the wolfpack rightfully deserve. It is refreshing to see some media about NC State that doesn’t include comments like “state fans shouldn’t expect to compete with duke and carolina” or “wolfpack fans are crazy, they ran off their last coach with their wildly unfathomable expectations.” Thank you for writing a piece that was thoughtful and insightful and most importantly, gave the wolfpack some love. It has been a long time since we have had any, but like you said, we’re back, and we will be for a while. Go Pack!

and he wrote back quite quickly. he said that he used to be one of those media types i was referring to but it all changed after seeing the spirit and dedication of the state fans this weekend.

and at the risk of being booted he also said that he “never understood why we kept herb so long. state wasnt getting any better and it was time for a change. this isnt some mid-major program, yanno?”

he’s just passed bill simmons for my favorite writer on espn.com

  23. branjawn 03/13/2007 at 3:46 PM #

So firing the coach isn’t terms for transferring without having to sit out a year? That’s messed up.

  24. choppack1 03/13/2007 at 3:49 PM #

Cedar – The red jacket thing will NOT go out of style. It’s not a good luck charm, it’s Tiger Woods wearing red on the final day of a golf tournament…it’s a way of stating out loud how much this game means.

When Sid wore that in Chapel Hill, I thought – now that takes balls. This is before I knew he was sick as a dog. That he wore it again after he ended up in the hospital that night, shows it’s not a superstitious thing. That he didn’t wear it in the other games shows that it’s not a regular part of his gameday outfit.

It’s like the FSU turfgame, the purple jerseys of Clemson, or the ALL RED our football team would sometime wear.

  25. lush 03/13/2007 at 3:50 PM #

correction he never understood the desire to keep herb, not why we kept him so long
