What Player Rotation Do You Want/Expect Next Year?

I’m done feeling sad/angry about the season being over. It’s time to look forward. Here’s what I envision for next year:

Starters: Javi/Degand (PG), Fells (SG), Costner (SF), McCauley (PF), Hickson (C)

First wave of reserves: Degand/Javi (PG), Horner (SG/SF), Grant (SF)

Second wave of reserves: Johnson (SG), Smith (SF/PF) or Thomas (SF)

Thoughts/Analysis:

– PG will be a true job battle. I ultimately expect the minutes to break down something like 25/15, and that Johnson will be the 3rd option. I have no idea which one will be better, short or long term. I do not expect to see Fells or Grant play PG except in an emergency.

– There will be a true rotation at the forward slots, with Grant (or possibly McCauley) essentially serving as the “sixth starter.” With 4 “starters” for 3 positions, that’s approximately 30 minutes per man, subject to adjustment for foul, health, and/or performance issues. Hickson will be the key to establishing a rebounding presence, and I don’t see any way he doesn’t start. Costner will be a legitimate conference POY candidate, and he will also start. McCauley might be better suited to bringing energy off the bench than Grant, if Grant as “sixth starter” doesn’t work out well.

– I am very hopeful that Horner has enough quickness to play at least a chunk of minutes at the 2. I think his handle is already good enough, and he is very smart with the basketball. Especially if Smith qualifies, this would be a much better opportunity for him than serving as the 5th or 6th forward. He could create hellish matchups as a 6’7″+ shooting guard. If this does pan out, then Fells had better work much harder and play much more consistently – or he will lose his starting slot.

– I alluded to it above – Smith’s qualifying is a major X factor. I think he could be an immediate presence on the glass, and really allow Sid to attack opposing frontcourts with waves of big, strong, skilled forwards. I would rather not have to count on Thomas fitting into the rotation right away – it would be better if he had to force himself into the mix with great play and practice work.

– From what I have been told, Johnson will be more of a 2 than a 1, although he could steal minutes at PG better than Fells or Grant. I could see him developing into a quasi-Ginyard role, where he is assigned to lock down the opponent’s best scoring guard.

– The best news – We will have at least a solid 8-man rotation. We could play as many as 11, if Smith qualifies, Johnson is in playing shape, and Thomas progresses quickly.

What kind of defense is everyone expecting now that the team shouldn’t have to worry as much about foul trouble?

  2. tractor57 03/21/2007 at 11:10 PM #

    E-RO,
I’m expecting a mix – hardnosed man to man, some zones and with Lowe’s experience under Valvano some “junk” as well – all depending on the situation. I see Lowe adjusting the defense to counter the strengths of the opponent.

  3. choppack1 03/21/2007 at 11:27 PM #

E-RO – That’s the $1 million question isn’t it? This year, we played a very conservative defense. To use a football analogy, we basically played prevent most of the year…our lack of depth, quickness and Atsur’s injury all required this.

Next year – we’ve addressed pretty much all of those issues – we’ll have all options on the table. This year, I think we got to see what Sid wanted to do offensively – next year, we see what he wants to do defensively.

Nice stats Mr. O… way to come strong with the numbers. Clearly my opinions are based on preconceived notions that are only partly based in reality. I’ve never been one to assume I’m always right. I would say I’m right only a little bit more than not of the times? Yep. Exactly.

The bottom line is this: We have an awful lot to be excited about. Costner should be the preseason favority for ACC Player of the Year with Hansbrough, and we have several guys who got forced into positions of responsibility this year early in their careers who should have gained a lot of invaluable experience as a result. Regardless of the lineup, I truly believe that with average contribution from the incoming players we should be a force to be reckoned with next year. That’s more than most of us reasonable fans believed Sid could do when he first accepted the job. There’s no doubt that he’s exceeded expectations at this point and that his incoming class… one that we all agree is impressive considering his lack of time on the recruiting trail… is a group that should do nothing but better the program. All in all, do we have anything to complain about or even debate? For the first time in a decade we have a coach who has proven himself worthy of our trust as a fan base. Wait…. am I saying that there is no need for blogs such as SFN since we have no real reason to second guess our current staff? Hmm. Perhaps.

I STILL NEED TO EMAIL SFN SOME PRETTY DECENT INSIDE INFO ON OUR FOOTBALL TEAM…. I’d like to not post the same for all to read, but I would like to share with one of the contributors…. thanks.

Whoever is most productive. If you go in a funk, then you ride the pine. I don’t expect that out of the individuals that we have, becuase they have been forged in steel this year. The sky is the limit with all of these guys and all of this depth.

  6. shellnc 03/22/2007 at 12:48 AM #

I doubt anyone is going to play regular 30 minute games with all of this depth. That isn’t the norm. Look at crapolina’s rotation. the top minute players are less than 30 minutes. If I’m playing the gross speculation game, then i say.

PG – Degand/Gonzalez 25/15 depending on performance (Fells)
    SG – Fells 25 /Grant 15 (Ferguson) (Johnson)
SF – Costner 20/ Grant 10/ Horner 10 (Ferguson) (Thomas)
    PF – McCauley 13/ Costner 8 / Horner 8 / Smith 11
    C – Hickson 25/ Mccauley 15 (Lewandowski)

I think we are going to see everyone that shows anything play. Don’t fool yorselves into thinking that Ferguson won’t play. If we play Tenacious D, then guys are going to need more rest than they had this year.

I see full court presses and smothering man-to-man in our future.

I’m with Xphoenix on both Fells and Horner being better options on D and O than Gavin is at times. I would love for someone to be able to figure out how many unforced turnovers Gavin had this year, especially after Atsur came back. He was constantly picking up his dribble or fumbling the ball away with no pressure put on him by a defensive man and his slow, lazy, telegraphed passes took so long to get where they were going that the defense had all day to intercept them. And sometimes there was just no one where the passes went. Gavin made some great clutch shots to keep us in games and put us ahead at crucial moments, but some of the turnovers prior to those shots made games closer than they should have been. He really needs to work on his ball handling during the off-season. He seemed to get a bit worse as the season wore on.

As for Fells, I really do think he was our best defensive player as well. We weren’t playing a lot of tight D due to the possibility of foul problems but he was the closest thing we had to a shut-down defender and I thought he played well in that roll. I also had a lot more confidence in him at PG than Gavin. Fells rarely tried to force passes. I believe if he concentrated on developing more of an inside game he could dominate most of the defenders who will be put on him, but in that he’ll be taller and has a definite advantage in vertical leap. If he developes that inside game, he’ll get more open threes as well.

Dennis Horner really came on the last three or four games and with some work in the weight room he is going to be a very good player. His confidence really picked up at the end of the season and I sort of liked seeing him get that Tech against Marist–showed a feisty streak that wasn’t readily apparent. I like that.

But, unless Gavin really picks up his ball handling and decision making skills I, like Xphoenix, would rather see Fells and Horner playing at that spot. Gavin has the potential to be a game maker, but also a game breaker at times.

    Degand 1.
    Fells 2.
    Grant 3.
    Costner 4.
    McCauley 5.

Hickson – big time minutes right out of the gate, but he won’t take a starting position until the spring, probably a few games into the conference schedule.

Horner – has to wait for Grant to graduate to start, but he’ll get big minutes as well.

These are the only ‘certains’ IMHO for big time PT. I see it as 7 quality guys that can go. I’m not saying Javi, Smith, Thomas, or Johnson won’t get quality minutes, lord knows we will be MUCH better off with them, but it’s always a crap shoot with freshmen. Johnson probably logs more minutes being that he has had some more time in Raleigh than the rest.
It will be a lot more fun to have options next year.

  9. legacyman 03/22/2007 at 6:37 AM #

I was wondering recently, since Horner is still young, if he might add an inch or two in height which would put him about 6’9″. That would be nice, taller and with some weight room time, stronger. We could use all of the 6’9″ power types we can find. I want to mash some people next year and run their butts off like was tried against us this year.

  10. Evroccck 03/22/2007 at 7:10 AM #

Horner could present matchup issues like Matt Harpring IMO

  11. TNCSU 03/22/2007 at 7:37 AM #

    Evroccck,
That would be a GREAT comparison. I’ve been impressed with Horner’s tenacity (is he okay after that collision with GG?), and his shot is nice, but he needs to quicken his release. He looks like he was able to shoot OVER guys in HS and is unable to do that in college. That’s why he’s started doing his head fake, and driving to the hole (wonder if Sid influenced that?). But, that being said, we’ll need his outside shooting next year, and the next. I think he could be one of those Freshmen that blossoms into a really good player in 1 or 2 years. He likes crashing the boards, too! Courtney could definitely play the PG position at times next year. I definitely think he’ll be assigned as our “shut-down” defender. He really picked up his D at the end of the year. We may all be wrong about PG, as Johnson could do it, but like alot of posters are saying, we’ll have options. Each game, we can play match-ups and vary the line-up. I think we’ve got a lot to look forward to. Costner, Ben, and Hickson will be a formidable front line if we want to go big. If we want to go smaller, it could be GG, Costner, and Ben.

  12. PapaJohn 03/22/2007 at 8:11 AM #

I’m not going to even make a guess on the lineups, I think almost every reasonable variation has been suggested above.
But everybody stop a second and thing, “ISN’T THIS FUN???”

  13. PapaJohn 03/22/2007 at 8:12 AM #

whoops, “think” not “thing” – need caffeine

  14. Dan 03/22/2007 at 8:20 AM #

I seem to remember Marvin Williams coming off the bench at UNC. JJ Hickson could be used like that. I say ‘could be’. I want a shot blocker and rebounder on the floor.

  15. KChill 03/22/2007 at 10:07 AM #

Grant will start. Anyone who thinks he won’t simply doesn’t know the game of basketball, they merely watch it. The difference is, next year if Grant makes a bad play he will sit.

  16. lush 03/22/2007 at 10:22 AM #

    degand
    fells
    grant
    costner
    mccauley

there is no way gavin doesnt start if he is here. i think jj, horner, johnson, and smith are the main subs with javi, fergi, and thomas getting the junk minutes, unless one of them outshines the main subs.

and for everyone complementing fells ability to handle the point, were you watching the wvu game?! how many times did he give them fast breaks with his lazy passes, he is no better or worse than gavin. they both make terrible decisions with the ball and get passes picked off all the time.

  17. CedarGroveWolf 03/22/2007 at 11:24 AM #

“Why worry so much about Costner guarding a smaller, quicker opposing 3, instead of looking at the flip side – how in the world would such an opposing player guard COSTNER?”

Think about it this way, Costner trying to guard Grant or Fells. Not happening. BC is a perfect 4, can score inside/rebound & step out for a 3. Ben/BC/JJ will share time at the 4/5. Horner a few minutes at the 4. I don’t think he’s quick enough for the 3 spot. A lot of PF on this team, esp if TS qualifies.

  18. jbwbubba 03/22/2007 at 12:53 PM #

Yep, Sidney might actually wish for the old days of not having enough people to play. If Hickerson is good as advertised, then he starts and you must start Costner, and Ben. That moves Grant or Fells to the bench, assuming Grant doesn’t have other issues. Ferguson still is in the guard mix, along with three backcourt new comers. Throw a qualified Smith into the front court and you suddenly have a very deep team, that can play big, small, fast, and slow.

  19. vtpackfan 03/22/2007 at 2:16 PM #

With all the variations we could throw out on the court next year it will be more interesting to see who ENDS the game rather than STARTS it (in close games).

Another factor will be practice. I’m less intriqued by the match ups we will have on the court and more interested with what Coach Lowe and his staff will be able to get out of practice with 13 schollies + Harris. What we saw this year was the ability of the team to get focused against some really big opponents (VT, UNX, ACC tourney, ect.) and lose its edge going against “lesser” opponents (Clemson, FSU, ECU, UNCG, ect.). THe spirit of competion mixed with the repetitions of running different sets SId uses in game situations will bring out the best in the team on a more consistent basis, IMO.

Anyways, here’s my rotation for what it’s worth.
    PG: Degand
    SG: Fells
    SF: GG
    PF: Costner
C: Hickson (toss up between he and McCauley, but Ben can never win the toss up at the tip off).

sixth man: McCauley. He will be better off the bench because the staff will see what the defense wants to do in terms of doubling the block, insert Ben and know right away where the open men are. Best case scenario is that McCauley is a sixth man that actually forces teams to rework the defense when he comes in.

Back up point: Javy. We start him on training wheels at the beggining, spliting time with Trevor Fergueson (50/50 back up minutes. When MJ becomes eligible then the back up minutes go 60/40 in Javy’s direction. Trevor may become lost in the void at this point unless he really breaks out or the injury bug attacks.

Bangin’ down low: Horner will add muscle to his frame and get alot of minutes at the any position not required to dribble much or guard mighty mouse. He is our glue player who looks like he has a better upside then any of us could have imagined. Besides early foul trouble I expect to see this team give the fist a bunch more if we are hustling out tails off. Hornerwill be weaving in and out of the line up wearing out the tacking shoe pad in front of the scorers table.

Emerge from the end of the bench. It always happens at some point of the season where an unexpected player hits his stride and pushes the incumbents for playing time. This season was crazy so it serves more as the exception than the rule, but Brian Nieman and Justin Clarke were these type of players. Next year its easy to like the chances of Tracy Smith if he signs his LOI and gets through the qulifications guanlet. Those are kind of “ify”, so I’ll tip my hat toward Johnny Thomas. He’s going to work hard in practice and soak in alot of Sid’s teachings at practice. I think against deeper, pressing teams, and near the end of the season when alot of players and banged up from the toils of ACC play, he will emerge as a factor.

Lewandowski and Harris may be joined by Fergueson after the semester break and if no one gets scratched from the line up, then there PT looks like blow out time. Stay strong guys, anything can happen.

This is the most pointless thread I’ve ever seen. This is a talk you have while consuming beer. Picking the starting line-up for State next year will be like filling out a NCAAT bracket. Hmmm, SFN, make a pool for that! That’d be interesting. I don’t think anyone can say with 100% certainty that any player from this year will be a starter next year. My guess would be McCauley if I had to choose someone. Crap, I’m taking part in the discussion!! Better go get that beer…

  21. kool k 03/22/2007 at 3:01 PM #

In a twist of irony, Horner pulls a McCauley and studs his way into the starting 5, ultimately replacing…McCauley…just have that Googs, Brian Howard, Chucky Brown feeling about the guy…just thinking out loud…really thinking about that beer…yep, I’m going home, gonna sit on the deck with a cold one and think of my favorite phrase of all time: “3…for Migjen Bakali!!!” Whenever I hear “Ben Mccauley”…I think “Migjen Bakali”…I love being a State Fan!

  22. Luke12321 03/22/2007 at 3:01 PM #

    Here is my 2 cents-
PG- Degand: Been in the system longer than anyone else. Sid talks about how quick he is…I think it is his job to lose.

SG- Fells:Lots of raw talent and I think he will improve over the summer. I have a great feeling that Sidney has the respect of his players and the knowledge to actually make kids better. Sid has said many times how Fells can be the best player on the court and he will be a strong defender out front.

SF- Grant: I know he makes some DUMB plays but he has lots of ablilty like Fells. I would say he needs to improve his shot but it may be too late for that? Only time will tell but I do think he will be starting for us next year as our only senior.

    PF- Costner- Enough said…

C- I would of said Ben but recently he was struggling. He plays with the most heart of anyone but that can only take you so far. JJ SHOULD be a better shot blocker and rebounder who knows…I will get back to you after I see the McDonalds AA game.

    Bench

Either Ben or JJ coming off first for the inside guys.

Javi coming off for Farnold but may be Johnson if Javi is not ready.

Johnson will come in for Fells at the 2 spot.

Tracy Smith /Horner will be coming in for Grant. Smith has way more potential than Horner but can not shoot the ball as well as Horner and shooting is something I feel we will need next year. I have a feeling though that Smith could play the 3 better than Horner on defense. Horner is too slow to be playing the 3.

Speaking of playing the 3…Costner is not a 3 and will not play the 3 (Just as Horner will not.) IMO

Ferg./Thomas/Lew/Harris good luck guys…..prove me wrong!

  23. newt 03/22/2007 at 3:06 PM #

I think our depth chart looks something like this:

    PG – Degand/Gonzo
    SG – Fells/Johnson/Ferguson
    SF – Grant/Horner/Thomas
    PF – Costner/McCauley/Hickson/Smith
    C – McCauley/Hickson

When asked about replacing Atsur on his radio show, Sid replied with Degand and a freshman coming in next year (Javi G.).

    – I’ll be very surprised if Javi beats out Degand for starting and primary PG.

    – Johnson could compete with Fells for starts.

    – Horner could compete with Gavin for starts.

    – McCauley could be the first guy off the bench for Costner or Hickson at PF or C, or McCauley could start at C and Hickson come in. Basically, I think by the end of the year McCauley, Hickson, and Costner all get about the same amount of minutes.

You have to be concerned about our guard play and hope for the best.

  24. branjawn 03/22/2007 at 3:51 PM #

Engin earned his way, Gavin didn’t. I don’t think many fans will care if Grant starts or not next year. He has some of “The Jules” attitude, but not that killer instinct… I’m not sure if Grant has any instinct, other than dribbling balls off his foot.

Costner just looks disinterested sometimes to me. I’d rather see McCauley out there fighting and mannin’ up than Costner playing D with his arms and throwing up NBA 3s. Don’t get me wrong, I really like BC, I’d choose Big Mc though.

  25. Tau837 03/22/2007 at 8:50 PM #

Great discussion. I love these kinds of discussions. So much better than our offseason talk in the past 5 years.
