What Player Rotation Do You Want/Expect Next Year?

I’m done feeling sad/angry about the season being over. It’s time to look forward. Here’s what I envision for next year:

Starters: Javi/Degand (PG), Fells (SG), Costner (SF), McCauley (PF), Hickson (C)

First wave of reserves: Degand/Javi (PG), Horner (SG/SF), Grant (SF)

Second wave of reserves: Johnson (SG), Smith (SF/PF) or Thomas (SF)

Thoughts/Analysis:

– PG will be a true job battle. I ultimately expect the minutes to break down something like 25/15, and that Johnson will be the 3rd option. I have no idea which one will be better, short or long term. I do not expect to see Fells or Grant play PG except in an emergency.

– There will be a true rotation at the forward slots, with Grant (or possibly McCauley) essentially serving as the “sixth starter.” With 4 “starters” for 3 positions, that’s approximately 30 minutes per man, subject to adjustment for foul, health, and/or performance issues. Hickson will be the key to establishing a rebounding presence, and I don’t see any way he doesn’t start. Costner will be a legitimate conference POY candidate, and he will also start. McCauley might be better suited to bringing energy off the bench than Grant, if Grant as “sixth starter” doesn’t work out well.

– I am very hopeful that Horner has enough quickness to play at least a chunk of minutes at the 2. I think his handle is already good enough, and he is very smart with the basketball. Especially if Smith qualifies, this would be a much better opportunity for him than serving as the 5th or 6th forward. He could create hellish matchups as a 6’7″+ shooting guard. If this does pan out, then Fells had better work much harder and play much more consistently – or he will lose his starting slot.

– I alluded to it above – Smith’s qualifying is a major X factor. I think he could be an immediate presence on the glass, and really allow Sid to attack opposing frontcourts with waves of big, strong, skilled forwards. I would rather not have to count on Thomas fitting into the rotation right away – it would be better if he had to force himself into the mix with great play and practice work.

– From what I have been told, Johnson will be more of a 2 than a 1, although he could steal minutes at PG better than Fells or Grant. I could see him developing into a quasi-Ginyard role, where he is assigned to lock down the opponent’s best scoring guard.

– The best news – We will have at least a solid 8-man rotation. We could play as many as 11, if Smith qualifies, Johnson is in playing shape, and Thomas progresses quickly.

    O

I agree on Fells cutting back on some mistakes, and better than GG did, but Fells doesn’t push like he should. I think Fells has possibly the biggest physical upside of all of them, but if he’s not going to want the ball when it matters, or pretty much anytime, then let someone play who can either improve and/or possibly make a difference as they are.

By mid-season, I like jj starting and Ben coming off the bench for sustained spark. I think he could mentally handle it better and i think he would be most effective in that role. I think Sid values rebounding and if jj is anywhere near his clippings, then he should help with that in spades.

I see GG starting at 2 or 3 depending on the match up. I see Fells starting at 2 unless grant does. Costner does not sit.

I’m kind of wondering where the idea of Gavin Grant as a good defender came from. Were you guys watching the same guy I was all year? He’s lazy on defense and is one of the feew players I’ve ever seen at this level who does not bend his knees on defense. He’s always standing straight up, and it gets him killed on penetration by anyone even remotely quicker than him. I’ll admit, Fells had a lot of the same problems, but he improved by leaps and bounds, and by the end of he was pretty clearly the best perimeter defender on the team IMO (It was only once he went to the bench in the second half that Jared Jordan really started carving us up in the Marist game). Fells is streaky, but he’s shown marked improvement over the course of the year, and he has the potential to become an incredible player. I’d love to say the same thing about Gavin, but honestly he’s very much the same player he was at the beginning of the season. He makes the same stupid mistakes he’s made for his entire career (I watched him single-handedly kill 3 consecutive plays during the marist game because of poor passing, shot selection, and floor spacing, and don’t get me started on the last shot against WVU which was contested with 6-7 seconds still left), he’s a poor defensive player, and he’s a sub-par perimeter shooter. I know he’s a great penetrator and a good rebounder, but I’d really like to see him come off the bench next year unless he makes HUGE improvement in his decision-making (I’d love to think he will, but we’ve seen nothing to suggest this will be the case).

As for Costner at the 3, I think it would definitely be possible against a lot of teams to run him at the 3 and play a 2-3 or 2-1-2 zone to hide his lack of quickness. With what I’ve seen of Hickson, he would be a monster anchoring the bottom of a 2-3 or being the middle of a 2-1-2, and with the kind of length this team has, a zone defense could be all kinds of hell for the opposition.

This is what I’d like to see as our lineup.

1 – one of the points, can’t tell until I’ve seen them play. I think this will probably end up being Degand though.
    2- Fells
    3 – Costner
    4 – McCauley
    5 – Hickson

or, against teams that are too quick for that lineup.

    1 – ditto
    2 – Fells
    3 – Horner
    4 – Costner
    5 – McCauley/Hickson

I’d much rather see Horner start than Gavin. He makes better decisions, he’s a better shooter, and he has a great mid-range game that’s a rarity in hoops these days. I’ll admit, my initial impression of him was that he was 2-3 years away from being a legit ACC player, but he’s made huge progress this year, and was one of my favorite players to watch in the NIT.

If ANYBODY comes off the bench next year of the starting 4 left assuming all things equal beginning next year as they ended this year… it damn well better be Grant. And that has absolutely nothing to do with the last shot of the WVU game. Ben makes way less knuckleheaded mistakes than Grant….

  5. PurplePeopleEaters 03/21/2007 at 5:47 PM #

To me it all depends on matchups. The great thing is that Lowe is a great matchup guy with his NBA experience.

As i’ve stated before I see Horner coming off the bench as a Lee Melchionni type player. Someone who can crash the boards hard, play good D, and shoot the three when we need it.

The two biggest dilemmas right now are Who will start at PG and How do Hickson and Grant fit into the rotation.

If we’re going with a standard starting lineup I see it going something like this-

    Farnold Degand
    Courtney Fells
    Gavin Grant
    Brandon Costner
    Ben McCauley
    Reserves-
    6. Hickson
    7. Gonzalez
    8. Horner
    9. Smith
    10. Johnson
    11. Thomas
    12. Lewandowski
    13. Ferguson

Now if we’re going big I see us going with

    Degand
    Fells
    Costner
    McCauley
    Hickson

and if we’re going quick/small i see us going with

    Javi gonzalez
    Fells
    Horner
    Tracy Smith
    JJ Hickson

Only problem with the quick is that it’s very young with the most experienced player being Fells.

The thing is that it doesn’t matter. We’re so used to having so little depth that this is a big deal. We’re going to be able to switch out as many players as we want just as UNC has this year. Each player has their strengths and we’ll see which player play better together later on in the season. I personally see this team as an NCAA tournament team and a top 4 team in the ACC but it all hinges on the point guard as we’ve learned this year.

Depth is never a bad thing. Player will emerge as clear starters early in the season like with UNC.

Horner won me over during the last few weeks.

I’m not in the know, but I’d guess that Degand is further along getting to the PG we need (compared to Javi) just because of how much longer he would have been with the team and Coach Lowe.

    My guess:
    1 – Degand
    2 – Fells
    3 – Grant
    4 – Costner
    5 – Hickson/McCauley

I don’t know how ready Hickson is either, so maybe work him in as a “6th Starter” for a while until he shows that he will sink or swim. Which ever isn’t starting (between Hickson and McCauley) will be the first sub in for a big guy.

I don’t like the idea of Grant at the 2 for anything more than spot play. Horner would IMO be a better fit for the 2. I’d work him in as first sub for 2/3.

Costner as a 3 doesn’t appeal to me defensively. He’s big enough to be able to go inside with ease, has decent handles, and a nice outside game. However, I don’t like his speed if you have more of a 2/3 player for him to guard.

And Fells has to be the 2 IMO. I see him as a breakout player. He plays perimeter defense better than anyone returning. He’s the most explosive player on the team (that I’ve seen play). He’s got a good touch, and better handles than people will give him credit for. Yes he’s a little inconsistent, but he was basically a redshirt freshman last year with the tag of a sophmore. He was jobbed in the whole Sendek not playing freshman much, but enough for them to not be redshirted.

  7. TNCSU 03/21/2007 at 6:34 PM #

    Okay, here’s my 2 cents:
I think the line-up will definitely look different at the end of the year vs. the beginning. During Nov/Dec, I can see:
    1. Degand — Javi
    2. Fells — Grant/Fergie
    3. Grant — Horner
    4. Costner — Smith
    5. McCauley — Hickson

Toward Jan/Feb, I see it looking more like:
    1. Javi — Degand/Johnson
    2. Fells — Johnson/Thomas/Fergie
    3. Grant — Horner
    4. Costner — Smith
    5. Hickson — McCauley

The line-ups will definitely vary, so Sid can play match-ups, and it is alot tougher for teams to prepare for us because we’d have a lot of flexibility in our game plan. As you can see, we will easily have 9-10 players getting time. This will definitely help during the conference schedule, and especially against the deeper teams — Carowhina. Overall, a great position to be in. I still can’t WTNY! When does the schedule come out? I haven’t been this excited about Pack basketball in a long while.

As far as a top 4 ACC finish, and a top 5 seed in the NCAA tourney, I know it is “optimistic”, but confidence breeds success, and I think these guys are confident. Like the announcer (I think it was Dykes…sorry) mentioned several times in the UNC game at RBC, you can’t “hope” to beat UNC (or any other good team), you have to “know” you can beat them. I think we now “know” we can beat UNC and any other team when we put our mind (& HEARTS) into it. Go Pack!

  8. rockwolf 03/21/2007 at 6:42 PM #

i can’t see costner, mccauley or grant coming off the bench. if hickson is the real deal then he’ll be in the line-up and that leaves the point.

i’d like to see the starting 5’s minutes drop by 8 – 10 each. fatigue had to be a factor in committing turnovers and defensive aggressiveness.

  9. Texpack 03/21/2007 at 7:32 PM #

I think that Costner spending time at the 3 is going to be a function of whether or not we find a consistent threat as a spot up 3-pt shooter. The biggest problems we had on offense this year, other than TO’s, was teams who effectively doubled McCauley and/or Costner. Atsur was the only consistent 3pt shooter we had. Brandon can provide that for stretches. I think his athleticism will improve over the off season too. Horner must be much quicker to play the two, but the idea of going really big against people is interesting. Fells will start because we have to have his perimeter defense.

    Javi/degand
    Fells
    Costner
    Ben
    JJ

  10. doug74 03/21/2007 at 7:49 PM #

I don’t get why everyone is writing off Costner as a three. Sid didn’t have the option of him guarding a three very much this year. He reminds me a lot of Len Bias, one of the most versatile players in ACC hx. Also, if Horner is still growing as has been rumored and he bulks up a little he may be a 4 or 5.

  11. Spin Wolf 03/21/2007 at 7:51 PM #

    I’ve got a sheepishly dumb question –

What’s the story on the 7″3 guy Lewandowski? It seems weird that someone with that natural size doesn’t get mentioned, so I figured something must be up.

    (be gentle – I’m learning to passionately follow b-ball again… 🙂 )

  12. vtpackfan 03/21/2007 at 8:12 PM #

Questions? GG’s deportation status snd overall likelyhood of sticking around anothre year. Qualifications, based on NCAA’s investigation of Mt. Zion’s accredidation. Any transfers (they happen to every program, not just one’s that Herb Sendek coached).

I want for each of these guys to be here, but only time will tell. Another concern of mine is the two year absence from Div. I games by Degand. I know he’s been in plenty of practices since then, but real game time situations bring about instincts that he is short on going into next season. For that reason I think Javi and Farn are in a dead heat to begin with.

One poster above alluded to the notion that MJ may have been told the grass was greener here at NCSU and the PG slot was his for the taking. My assumption is that Romar Smith may have beat him out at UT AND Bruce Pearl dropped some commnets to him about becoming a permanent wing player for the Vol’s. It seemed more a case that he would NEVER play PG there more then he didn’t like being a back up. Don’t know.

Every one have a great off season, Go Pack!

  13. BJD95 03/21/2007 at 8:42 PM #

Why worry so much about Costner guarding a smaller, quicker opposing 3, instead of looking at the flip side – how in the world would such an opposing player guard COSTNER?

All we would need is for BC to hold his own defensively, and we could dominate when we have the ball.

  14. E-RO 03/21/2007 at 8:51 PM #

“What’s the story on the 7″3 guy Lewandowski? It seems weird that someone with that natural size doesn’t get mentioned, so I figured something must be up.”

Everything that I’ve heard about the guy is that he’s basically just size. To my knowledge, he was recruited to be a body and maybe a project

  15. VaWolf82 03/21/2007 at 8:56 PM #

It all looks good but the point.

Ding, Ding, Ding….we have a winner.

State will be as good next year as the PG’s play.

  16. Mr O 03/21/2007 at 9:21 PM #

Gavin’s stats in conference play(rank on team)

    15.3 pts(2nd)
    14 blocks(1st)
    4.6 rebs(3rd)
    36.5 mins(1st)
    3.2 assists(2nd)
    49.4% fg(3rd, Horner 2nd)
    35% 3 pt(4th)
    73.8% ft

Grant did lead the team in TOs with 55 in ACC play.

    Grant 55 TOs
    Costner 53 TOs
    McCauley 43 TOs

That is a lot of TOs for our “big three”. Considering that Grant had to play PG, he wasn’t anymore TO prone than Costner and McCauley. All three need to cut out their TOs next season.

    My thoughts:

    1) Even this year, the minutes played by our bench guys varied hugely from game to game. This seems to be more of an NBA mentality: Kobe’s going to play 40+ minutes a night, but Josh Powell might play 2 or might play 20. With many more options next year, expect to see 11 or perhaps more guys getting significant minutes in some games, rather than a true pecking order like many college teams have.

    2) I fall into the “JJ won’t start” camp – at least from day one. He’ll play plenty, though.

    3) I see Horner getting plenty of PT next year. He has the best shot on the team, and he can rebound and block shots pretty well. He reminds me of AD Vassalo at VT.

    4) I’m higher on Johnson than many here seem to be. He was a big time recruit with a serious offer list (Georgetown, Illinois, Indiana, among others). He almost committed to us out of high school, so maybe his quick transfer isn’t an indication that he can’t cut it. I predict he’ll be our top backcourt reserve, splitting time at the 1 and 2, once he becomes eligible.

    5) Conversely, while I think Javi may help down the line, I don’t see him starting from Day 1 or maybe even playing a ton next year.

    6) From what I’ve read about Johnny Thomas, I could see him getting a few minutes a game as that “glue” player every team needs – rebounding, playing hard D, diving for loose balls.

  18. dawgitall 03/21/2007 at 9:43 PM #

Interesting reading but I just keep coming back to the thought that everytime I think I know how things are going to work out in the future they just never seem to unfold that way. Who’s to say that Lew, Horner, Johnson and/or Ferg. don’t emerge as key players next year? If memory serves me correctly (and sometimes it doesn’t) Del Negro, and Gugs kind of came out of nowhere, from the end of the bench to outstanding careers. On the other hand sometimes projected great players in high school just don’t/can’t seem to rise to ocasion. I hope Hickson is great but he could just end up being a 10 minute a game sub. Not predicting but saying the future is awfully unpredictable.

  19. choppack1 03/21/2007 at 10:02 PM #

I think we see the 4 we saw this year – Fells, Grant, Costner, and McCauley….I think we go w/ Degand or Javy at the point….

We’ll have lots of options next year….We can go w/ small and quick – Javy, Degand, Fells, Grant and Costner/McCauley/Hickson…we can go big – Fells, Grant, Costner, McCauley and Hickson (I’d play a zone w/ this line-up – it would be kind of like the McMillan, Meyers, Shack, Washburn, Bolton/Chucky…)

Personally, I think the small lineup is capable of rebounding well enough and can excert enough defensive pressure to shock the hell out of the opposition.

Next year Sidney will have a tough task…Keeping a big team happy. This year, he only had to placate 7 scholarship kids – one of those was a true freshman, the other was a kid who hadn’t played basketball in a year and a half. Next year, Sidney will have to somehow manage 5 of those egos – the iron 4 + Horner…in addition to 2 sophomore transfers, Thomas, Hickson, Javy and possibly Tracy Smith. That’s 11 guys – 200 minutes….

  20. packwolf90 03/21/2007 at 10:23 PM #

    Please make the grades Tracy

  21. gumbydammit 03/21/2007 at 10:27 PM #

SFN, I love this site – I really do. So keep that in mind when I offer up this request – please don’t ever refer to a Pack player (even a future one) in terms of a UNC-player analogy.

That “quasi-Ginyard” comment made me throw up a little bit in my mouth…

  22. bTHEredterror 03/21/2007 at 10:31 PM #

Yeah, BJD95. And unless the guy is a solid step back shooter, it’s likely Hickson will be able to erase a lot of mistakes.

I think Sid will have a ton of options next year, and will utilize them specific to the team at hand. For instance, Javi might see less time against a Crittenton type PG, and more against a Lawson type PG. Or against a team like WVU, Hickson and McCauley might see less time to adjust to the perimeter 5 and the 1-3-1. If any of the PGs can be steady in halfcourt, we’ll be difficult to defend in a variety of ways. We can crash waves of guys against a shallow team like was done to us this year, or just to crash ’em into somebody elses for fun (UNOHU).

  23. ncsu96 03/21/2007 at 10:42 PM #

    Defense…Defense….Defense.

That’s what I’m anxious to see next year, I think our perimeter defense was our weak point. It will be really interesting to see what Sidney can do with a loaded bench on the defensive side of the ball. I expect to see a lot more fast break dunks…sweet.

  24. BJD95 03/21/2007 at 10:57 PM #

Reportedly, Degand and Johnson have significant defensive ability. Hickson holds alot of potential in that regard, assuming he can avoid foul trouble.
