GT Helps the Pack

Congratulations to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets!

Tech’s win over Carolina last night in Atlanta made a big statement for the ACC’s push to get more than six teams into the NCAA Tournament. If the NCAA Tournament would have started before last night, Georgia Tech would not have made the field. But, their win last night serves to at least place the Yellow Jackets squarely on the bubble (with games to be played).

In yesterday’s great conversation on SFN you will find a lot of great commentary and analysis from our community. In short, it is clearly beneficial to NC State’s hopes for an NIT bid for Georgia Tech (and Clemson and Florida State) to perform well and make a push into the NCAA Tournament.

With the ACC Tournament still to play (click here for a mathematical analysis of the NCAA Tournament), who knows what might happen.

A few ACC items of note:

* The sub-story to Ty Lawson’s benching was that he “had a bad practice”. Riiiiiiight. God I hope that this guy jumps to the NBA this year. Last night’s performance helps to further underscore his importance to the Tarheels.

* Fantastic ACC Notes that shouldn’t be ignored.

* 850 TheBuzz this morning.

* N&O’s audio of Talking with Tudor.

* Does this mean that the ACC office has rid itself of the “great facilitator”, Fred Barakat?

* It was great to see Ben McCauley play well against Wake on Wednesday night after struggling for a couple of games. Despite the great year that McCauley has put together, he has generally struggled when being guarded by longer, athletic players like Brandon Wright at Carolina. McCauley may be the primary beneficiary of JJ Hickson’s presence in Raleigh next season as it will allow Big Ben to move to his natural power forward position where he will consistently have more advantageous physical match-ups in the post.

* From Dave Glenn’s notes that we previously linked:

With two consecutive horrible seasons in conference play, Wake Forest coach Skip Prosser is nearing some dangerous territory. Consider this: Since 1975, ACC basketball programs have had streaks of three or more seasons when they lost more than 60 percent of their conference games only 13 times. In 12 of those situations, the coach who started the streak was fired without ending it.

The lone exception was Maryland coach Gary Williams, and his truly was a unique case. His three straight horrible ACC seasons (1991-93) came in the aftermath of the disastrous Bob Wade era (1987-89) in College Park. Williams ultimately righted the ship, going to 11 straight NCAA Tournaments (1994-2004) and winning the national championship in 2002.

With a 3-13 ACC record last year and a 4-10 mark so far this season, Prosser now has two straight seasons that surpass the 60-percent losing mark. Looking ahead, he’ll enter 2007-08 without his most productive player from this year (senior center Kyle Visser), and with a possible starting lineup of five sophomores. A third straight bad season would put Prosser in the midst of some very undesirable company.

and what about Baciou something from Asheville in the class of 08. Sid isnt doent here either. i heard we offered him too. IF we got him that would make 3 for the class of 08 with only 1 spot available. we are starting to sound like georgetown. wasnt it Valvano who got asked once how he could offer schollies to kids when had already used his 12 or 13 or whatever it was at that time, and he just smiled and said “i know how to count”

  2. packbackr04 03/02/2007 at 3:10 PM #

isnt Larry Harris’ son a walk on?

  3. TNCSU 03/02/2007 at 3:20 PM #

^^Impressed we will no longer have any walk-ons, for the first time in a long time.

I actually don’t mind having walk-ons, as I think they add alot to a team — it’s just that we won’t HAVE to play them. They help alot in practices, etc. though.

^^i wonder how this kid flew under the radar for so long?? sounds like the kid can play.

PG is probably one of the toughest position to grade coming out of HS. Some PG’s are scorer’s but don’t necessarily make the players around them “better.” IMO a PG, runs the show, makes players better, and wins games for his team. Sounds like what Javi likes to do! So who knows, we may be better off without that other PG (Wright). As long as Javi, can play tough D, and then on offense, penetrate and feed Ben, Brandon, Courtney, and JJ, we’ll be doing fine!!

    as to the scholarship issue…

I’m pretty sure that they’re counting on someone to leave/go pro in the next year, either that or Lewandowski and/or ferguson are going to get cut…

  5. CedarGroveWolf 03/02/2007 at 3:41 PM #

big Lew to xfer is my guess

  6. BigRed 03/02/2007 at 3:50 PM #

Open scholarships could come from many quarters.

We have maybe three players who could decide to try the waters in the NBA draft after this season or next.

We have one player who may be deported.

We have one or two players who, based on expected playing time, could choose to transfer.

We have one recruit who may not have academically qualified.

We have at least one recruit who may have the talent to try out the NBA draft after only one year on the squad.

Given that one or all of these instances may come to pass, would it be diligent of the coaching staff _not_ to overbook the scholarships?

They are betting that at least one of these will occur. They may have information that we don’t. I trust that they will look after the players _and _ the team.

Does anyone know the academic status of the existing players? It’s always possible that one will lost to academic attrition (which is also a reason many declare, because their gonna flunk out anyway).

Maybe they know something we don’t about Gavin’s citizenship status?

  9. pakfanistan 03/02/2007 at 4:18 PM #

Maybe Gavin dribbled his citizenship papers off his feet and out of bounds…

JUST KIDDING GAVIN, I LOVE YA MAN. PLEASE DON’T HURT ME.

some conferences do honor the regular season champ. the acc doesn’t and never has. all it means is a one-seed in the tournament and an excuse to hang a banner. the acc champion is the one left standing at the end of the tournament, plain and simple. the way it should be.

  11. CedarGroveWolf 03/02/2007 at 4:24 PM #

We will be hurting if JJ stays only 1-2 years. Ben will gradate & JJ leave early we’ll have a true forsh at C or big Lew in ’09. Yikes!

  12. CedarGroveWolf 03/02/2007 at 4:29 PM #

also, Degand, Johnson, Costner, Trev Horner all will be Seniors at the same time that JJ might turn pro. yikes!

  13. wufpack 03/02/2007 at 4:36 PM #

Gavin’s situation has nothing to do with this. Even with Gavin next year, his senior year, we now have 13 scholarship players. The “issue” comes up the next year, when we only lose Gavin to graduation and already have 2 commitments. Even with Gavin and Javi, we are still within the limit of 13 scholarships for ’07-’08. It is ’08-’09 when we potentially have 14 players as of now. Gavin’s gone by then no matter what.

  14. BigRed 03/02/2007 at 4:39 PM #

I’m not sure there’s anything to be gained by fretting over dire attrition scenarios. It’s just part of the college game and something to be dealt with. In a given year we may be dealt better or poorer hands.

The important thing is to have capable and honorable hands at the helm. And I am inclined to feel good about this aspect of our program.

  15. pakfanistan 03/02/2007 at 4:40 PM #

I knew that, I just wanted to make a joke about Gavin and his ball handling skills.

  16. packbackr04 03/02/2007 at 4:43 PM #

right wuf, but if you were Lew or Ferg wouldnt you transfer now if you saw the righting on the wall? also i mentioned above, this Baciou kid from asheville in the class of 08. he has been offered too which makes 3 “potential” players and only 1 spot (with Gavin leaving)… my guess (wish) would also be that Lew transfers out after this year. but the pack pride articel makes it sound like he is gonna get redshirt for this year. and that only he means he ties up a scholly for an extra year.

  17. highonlowe 03/02/2007 at 4:57 PM #

Whether leaving or not, if you can get a redshirt, you take it.

  18. packbackr04 03/02/2007 at 4:59 PM #

good point HOL: i hadnt thought about it that way

“Guys, I’m a bit confused. Do we have two championship titles in ACC basketball? ACC Championship and ACC Tournament Championship?”

“Costner isn’t going to win because of his red-shirt status. It isn’t any more complicated than that.”

I guess you’re saying the voters will use that fact to say that he doesn’t deserve to be freshman of the year. So I must ask can anyone name a redshirt freshman who ever won Freshman of the Year?

And why is it okay for him to be on the All Freshman 1st team if it’s not okay for him to win the FOY award?

  21. choppack1 03/02/2007 at 5:20 PM #

Regarding Ferg – I doubt he transfers unless it’s too a small program. He just finished sitting out a year after transferring here.

Regarding Costner – the only reason he’s not being considered is because UNC-Ch has 2 high profile/future stars who will likely get the honor and because Costner plays for a lower tiered team.

I guarantee you if Costner was having this season for the boys in Blue on a team playing for 1st place and Wright/Lawson were putting up league leading #s for a team in the lower tier, Costner would get the hardware.

And FWIW – I can’t think of a redshirt frosh who would have ever been in the position to get the award.

  22. wufpack 03/02/2007 at 5:20 PM #

The problem isn’t the rules, the rules say he’s eligible. The problem is the individual voters that will hold it against him anyway.

  23. Tau837 03/02/2007 at 5:22 PM #

    ^^^^Great article on ESPN.
