GT Helps the Pack

Congratulations to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets!

Tech’s win over Carolina last night in Atlanta made a big statement for the ACC’s push to get more than six teams into the NCAA Tournament. If the NCAA Tournament would have started before last night, Georgia Tech would not have made the field. But, their win last night serves to at least place the Yellow Jackets squarely on the bubble (with games to be played).

In yesterday’s great conversation on SFN you will find a lot of great commentary and analysis from our community. In short, it is clearly beneficial to NC State’s hopes for an NIT bid for Georgia Tech (and Clemson and Florida State) to perform well and make a push into the NCAA Tournament.

With the ACC Tournament still to play (click here for a mathematical analysis of the NCAA Tournament), who knows what might happen.

A few ACC items of note:

* The sub-story to Ty Lawson’s benching was that he “had a bad practice”. Riiiiiiight. God I hope that this guy jumps to the NBA this year. Last night’s performance helps to further underscore his importance to the Tarheels.

* Fantastic ACC Notes that shouldn’t be ignored.

* 850 TheBuzz this morning.

* N&O’s audio of Talking with Tudor.

* Does this mean that the ACC office has rid itself of the “great facilitator”, Fred Barakat?

* It was great to see Ben McCauley play well against Wake on Wednesday night after struggling for a couple of games. Despite the great year that McCauley has put together, he has generally struggled when being guarded by longer, athletic players like Brandon Wright at Carolina. McCauley may be the primary beneficiary of JJ Hickson’s presence in Raleigh next season as it will allow Big Ben to move to his natural power forward position where he will consistently have more advantageous physical match-ups in the post.

* From Dave Glenn’s notes that we previously linked:

With two consecutive horrible seasons in conference play, Wake Forest coach Skip Prosser is nearing some dangerous territory. Consider this: Since 1975, ACC basketball programs have had streaks of three or more seasons when they lost more than 60 percent of their conference games only 13 times. In 12 of those situations, the coach who started the streak was fired without ending it.

The lone exception was Maryland coach Gary Williams, and his truly was a unique case. His three straight horrible ACC seasons (1991-93) came in the aftermath of the disastrous Bob Wade era (1987-89) in College Park. Williams ultimately righted the ship, going to 11 straight NCAA Tournaments (1994-2004) and winning the national championship in 2002.

With a 3-13 ACC record last year and a 4-10 mark so far this season, Prosser now has two straight seasons that surpass the 60-percent losing mark. Looking ahead, he’ll enter 2007-08 without his most productive player from this year (senior center Kyle Visser), and with a possible starting lineup of five sophomores. A third straight bad season would put Prosser in the midst of some very undesirable company.

Agreed…and to the Yellow Jackets for beating the Holes last night!!!

I really don’t understand why anyone thinks GT, FSU, or Clemson have any bearing on our NIT status. Is there some limit to schools from one conference that I don’t know about? Even if GT, FSU, and Clemson ALL get into the NCAA’s, do you really think that the 3 teams that they knock out of the NCAA’s would NOT go to the NIT? Let’s say they all get in which leaves Indiana, Washington, and Syracuse just outside the NCAA’s. Would we somehow magically be in better shape to get an NIT bid over those 3 teams? Ummm, no. The NCAA’s are going to take the same number of at-large teams no matter if there are 6 ACC teams among them or 9. There are going to be the same number of bubble teams left out of the NCAA’s and relegated to the NIT no matter if 3 of them are ACC teams, or if 0 of them are. What we REALLY need to hope for is for all of the conference regular season champions in the small conferences to win their tournaments. That and our own performance from here on out is pretty much all that matters.

Not only did Tech win but they did so with the officials working hard against them from the start. Carolina almost always gets the calls but at one point late in the game the FT count was 27 attempts for UNC and 3 for Tech.

Carolina just doesn’t foul as much because they play textbook defense, and they get more fouls because they drive the lane and force the other team to foul them…didn’t you know that??? BY GOD, have you seen the “talent” on that team, why would they have to foul?? Ask Dickie V about their talent, BABY! Thank goodness, he’s shut up about that lately!

  6. TNCSU 03/02/2007 at 12:32 PM #

BTW, I was joking — I saw the same stat, a little ridiculous, but I agree it is a good idea to hack Wright if he has an open shot, because he can’t shoot free throws!

*One ironic aspect of the whole NCAA/NIT situation could be our 1st round game of the ACC tourney. We will likely play GT or FSU.*

There is a better than average chance that we will face Duke in the first round. If Duke loses at Carolina and if GT beats BC @ GT, then Duke is our opponent.

With the GT win FSU is locked in to the 8-9 game, so there is zeero chance that we will play FSU in the first round.

I hate to get off topic but when I read this, it just brought back memories. Nine minutes of hell.

“…Stanford took advantage of a long Arizona State scoring drought early in the game to bolster its NCAA tournament hopes with a 63-53 victory over the Sun Devils on Thursday night.

Arizona State (7-21, 1-16 Pac-10) went nearly nine minutes without a point after scoring on the opening possession of the game and played from behind the rest of the way.”

  9. PackGirl 03/02/2007 at 1:18 PM #

Lady Wolfpack just beat FSU 76-49. Gillian Goring (Amazon Woman) had 22 points and 19 rebounds. Now they have to beat Duke tomorrow (assuming Duke wins today).

“I hate to get off topic but ”

    then don’t

  11. Rick 03/02/2007 at 1:40 PM #

It does bring back bad memories.
I am glad I at least have hope now.

  12. Gene 03/02/2007 at 1:45 PM #

Bo, we’ve had more than our share of scoring droughts this year, so I will refrain at mentioning other teams in similar situations.

Caulton Tudor wrote a column yesterday saying the Freshman of the Year race was down to Lawson and Wright. I sent him this email:

    “Mr. Tudor,

Enjoyed the column today. Thought I would ask why you think the freshman of the year race is down to two players on the same team and didn’t give Costner more serious consideration. I am a Wolfpack alum and fan, so I’m sure I’m biased. That said, Costner is:

    * 11th in points and 10th in points per game — top freshman in both
    * 6th in rebounds and 1st in rebounds per game — top freshman in both
    * 26th in field goal percentage — not great but still respectable at 47.2%
    * tied for 11th in 3 pointers made and 23rd in 3 point percenage — very impressive for a guy who has been forced to play PF most of the season
    * 9th in free throws made and 19th in free throw percentage — very solid
    * tied for 18th in blocks — solid
    * 5th in minutes played (I think) — top freshman

What makes Lawson or Wright more worthy? For one thing, they have each other. More importantly, they also play with a Player of the Year candidate (Hansbrough) and on one of the most talented teams in the nation. Costner, on the other hand, has essentially played out of position all season at PF and has had much less help, especially with Atsur’s injury problems.

Suppose you take Lawson or Wright off UNC’s team. How many fewer wins do they have? Is that gap greater than the gap if Costner had not played for State? I seriously doubt that. I do think Wright is probably more talented and a better NBA prospect than Costner, but I don’t see how that figures into the voting.

    Interested in your explanation.”

He sent me a response that didn’t address anything in my email:

“And after last nite, maybe T-Young is back in the running.”

Is this something that the media relations department gets involved in at all (similar to how schools support their Heisman candidates)? If so, we should be putting on a media blitz about Costner IMO.

  14. Tau837 03/02/2007 at 1:56 PM #

^And maybe this would be a good topic for this site to write about… soon.

  15. Mr O 03/02/2007 at 2:09 PM #

Costner isn’t going to win because of his red-shirt status. It isn’t any more complicated than that.

  16. TNCSU 03/02/2007 at 2:20 PM #

^^^Costner isn’t going to win because of his red-shirt status.

Agree — I mentioned the same thing several weeks ago.

  17. tvopack 03/02/2007 at 2:31 PM #

Guys, I’m a bit confused. Do we have two championship titles in ACC basketball? ACC Championship and ACC Tournament Championship?

  18. packbackr04 03/02/2007 at 2:35 PM #

anything new on this javi gonzales from miami. saw the latest article Gene posted on the other thread, but didnt know if we had heard anything yet??? and if anyone can paint a schollly picture with him in the equation that would be great. i am going to have to assume someone (hopefully lewandowski or ferguson) is transferring next year. because if not then we only have 1 scholly to give in 08 and we already have two players verbally commited(mays & williams). i know alot can change but any help on this would be great. i know shooting guard is out there and has the inside scoop on who is leaving the program/

  19. the_phisherman 03/02/2007 at 2:38 PM #

I have heard that Javi verbally committed and is going to cancel visits to the other schools

  20. packbackr04 03/02/2007 at 2:40 PM #

great news phisherman!!!! what about our scholly situation? something has to give

  21. CedarGroveWolf 03/02/2007 at 2:40 PM #

“Do we have two championship titles in ACC basketball?”

    no, just tourney

  22. CedarGroveWolf 03/02/2007 at 2:42 PM #

“Costner isn’t going to win because of his red-shirt status”

but it’s ok for Hansbrough to be a 20 yr old frosh & win. typical.

  23. packbackr04 03/02/2007 at 2:48 PM #

this is from pack pride, but its not premium material

After receiving a commitment from Miami (FL) Krop point guard Javier Gonzalez, Sidney Lowe has put his stamp on the Wolfpack’s program. The 2007-2008 roster will be loaded with depth at every position.

2007-2008 Projected NC State Basketball Roster

    G Gavin Grant, Sr.
    F Ben McCauley, Jr.
    G Courtney Fells, Jr.
    F Simon Harris, RS-Jr.**
    F Brandon Costner, RS-Soph.
    G Trevor Ferguson, RS-Soph.
    F Dennis Horner, Soph.
    G Farnold Degand, RS-Soph.
    G Marques Johnson, Soph.*
    C Bartosz Lewandowski, RS-Fr.*
    C J.J. Hickson, Fr.
    F Tracy Smith, Fr.
    F Johnny Thomas, Fr.
    G Javier Gonzalez, Fr.

*- Johnson will be eligible to play at the beginning of the second semester in 2007-2008. It is uncertain if he will be a redshirt freshman or sophomore, but currently he is projected to be a sophomore. It is believed that Lewandowski will be awarded a medical hardship/redshirt for the 2006-2007 season.

**- Harris transferred from Elon, but he will not be on scholarship.

  24. packbackr04 03/02/2007 at 2:57 PM #

we have to have a top 10 recruiting class with this haul. i wonder how this kid flew under the radar for so long?? sounds like the kid can play. Watch out Heels!

way to go Monte. congrats also to Sid.

  25. Gene 03/02/2007 at 3:03 PM #

Well something (or someone) has to give, in order to get the two commits for ’08 scholarships, because only Grant’s will be free after next year.

Impressed we will no longer have any walk-ons, for the first time in a long time.

Really quick work in building depth and adding talent, by the coaching staff.
