Getting Ready for the Goats – Can Lightning Strike Twice? (11:00 Update)

Especially since our shocking win in Raleigh, I have asked some of my more rational Hole fan friends about some of Roy’s curious tendencies. No, nothing about banging farm animals, but his strange strategy. You know, playing Wes Miller and/or Bobby Frasor down the stretch of close games – sometimes ahead of arguably his best player (Ty Lawson). Or his stubborn insistence that he shouldn’t press during road games except at the end of the game or trailing by a huge margin.

They have no explanation, and also cite the train wreck nature of UNC’s half-court offense. That shouldn’t be with the unstoppable Brandon Wright eligible to play – but it often is. So…the question looms. Can lightning strike twice? Hell, if a mensch (hat tip to Noah) like Les Robinson can beat Dean twice in one season, why can’t Lowe win two against Roy, despite being heavily outgunned?

Then reality sets in, and I start to dread 9:00. Roy doesn’t have any rules against pressing at home. I can still remember what GT’s press did to us, and their athletes are nowhere near as skilled as UNC’s. One of Roy’s redeeming qualities is his hatred of NC State (ask someone with access to Rams’ Club events), which is vastly preferable to the more common condescending nonchalance. However, that works against us here. Roy couldn’t understand his team playing with less passion last time out. How can those whippersnappers not get up for NC State? I am certain Roy has pounded that lesson home all week.

What can we do? Somehow convince UNC’s players that we’re really Virginia Tech. Or convince our players that UNC is really Virginia Tech. Both, maybe? In all seriousness, we at least have that scintilla of hope. Thanks, Coach Lowe. I can’t really dread 9:00, no matter what my brain says. I want to watch, and I’ll be proud of where we’re headed regardless of the final score. I enjoy the thought of Brandon Wright going pro, and Hansbrough trying to deal with McCauley and Hickson pretty much by himself, while Costner pops 3s when the UNC defense sags to help out.

Update: Here’s a hilarious, non-photoshopped picture of weasel-in-chief Dick Baddour, for your viewing/mocking pleasure. Hat tip to 850 The Buzz’ Joe Ovies.

    Concerning Degand.

Here’s a short scouting report out of HS: “Quick two-guard with good first step. Needs to become more consistent with outside shot and get stronger.”

Note “two-guard”. We still don’t have a “TRUE” PG, but I realize the lines can be blurred — i.e. GG was running the point, so I’m sure Johnson and/or Degand could do the job. Heck, Fells, can run the point, too.

    82grad, I beg to differ.

A solid blazer, in the school colors, is nothing like red patten-plastic shoes and wrap around reflector shades. Totally different.

I think it was beowolf who once called me the local “Queer Eye, for the Straight Guy” expert around here, so I think think I’ll drop the clothing issue altogether.

“I can sum that up two words…opportunity and depth”

    ’07 Degand, Johnson
    ’08 Degand, Johnson, Mayes
    ’09 Degand, Johnson, Mayes

Do we need more than 3 PG’s?

  5. Gene 02/21/2007 at 12:39 PM #

please, not another Chuck. let’s be done with coaches dressing like clowns.

Breaking out a blazer, in your school’s colors, for a big game, isn’t the same as wearing sun-glasses and bright red sneakers, in terms of looking classy versus looking goofy. The blazer is a sign of respect for your school, whereas Chuck was just trying to get some attention with his attire.

There can be a fine line between stylish and tacky but I think Sid has been on the right side of that line so far. He makes a statement, but he’s not a clown either. As my Grandma would say, he’s a snazzy dresser!

redfred2 beat me to the above post, didn’t know he had posted, sorry for repeating the same point.

  8. RedTerror29 02/21/2007 at 12:49 PM #

Now a full red suit…that might be a bit much. But I’d still like to see Sid rock it.

“If not, why was he brought here? He getting recruiting over already?”
    “‘07 Degand, Johnson
    ‘08 Degand, Johnson, Mayes
    ‘09 Degand, Johnson, Mayes

Do we need more than 3 PG’s?”

Considering neither Johson or Mays were in the fold when Degand transfered, he seemed like a great pick up at the time. I am not sure he is not still a great pickup. I have not seen him play yet. I will say this, if any coaching staff can groom a point guard it is this one.

    ’07 two guard, two guard

…and one true point if the kid from florida comes (but still having solid 2’s with ball handling skills and potential to possibly play the point when needed.)

’08 two true points (heaven forbid, why don’t we just put all our eggs in the Mayes kid’s basket)…we’ll still have a 6’5″ swing man with ball handling skills in Johnson, and a 6’3″ pg/sg in Degand

Is the college game a guard oriented game or not?

Another thing we forget because of the past lack of PT for freshmen, I can only imagine how much further along this team would have been earlier this season, if they had some talent really challenging them in practice and wanting to get a share of their PT.

I may be wrong but I don’t see any negatives with picking up a freshman who is running the point right now. If there are negatives, talent at the pg position isn’t one of them.

Did Gene Keady have any sayings about bad combovers? His recruiting and his hair both kind of went down the drain toward the end there.

At this point I’d be less worried about having too many point guards than I would about not having enough. If they really like Gonzalez, bring him aboard. We need depth in the backcourt in the worst way.

  12. primacyone 02/21/2007 at 1:08 PM #

    1: Degand, Gonzalez, Mayes

    2: Fells, Johnson, Fergueson

    3: Horner, Thomas, Williams

    4: Costner, Smith, Harris

    5: McCauley, Hickson, Lewandowski

Tell me we are not spending time worrying that we might have too many PGs in the future…

  14. redfred2 02/21/2007 at 1:21 PM #

Yep, I’m afraid so, somehow we have reached maximum overload.

  15. newt 02/21/2007 at 1:21 PM #

All of our PG recruits are question marks. We’re talking about top-100 guys, not top 20 guys. I think it’s a good approach to recruit an abundance and increase the odds of one of these guys panning out into a top quality ACC player.

I don’t know if Sid wears the red blazer, but I expect he’ll wear something of signifigance. And a tailored $1000+ blazer over a shirt with cuffs paired with Italian shoes does not equal clown. Sidney’s clothes are designer. They didn’t come from Belks.

  16. CedarGroveWolf 02/21/2007 at 1:24 PM #

only one problem primacyone, only 13 ships. Harris won’t get one, who else?

    Degand is a PG, not a 2G.
Johnson is a combo, but aleady have 2 in that spot with Fells & Ferg
CJ Williams is a 2G, not a SF.

we’ll need a ship for a good C in ’09. Ben will have graduated & I doubt JJ will be here for more than 2 yrs. Not oo sure about big Lew.

  17. Jeff 02/21/2007 at 1:25 PM #

For all of the talk regarding Degand…people have to realize how sparse we were on the roster and at that position last year. We had to take anything that we could get our hands on.

I truly believe that if Larry Davis had kept his commitment you would have never taken Degand and we would have at least 1 or 2 more wins this season than we do.

“Tell me we are not spending time worrying that we might have too many PGs in the future…”
No, just one person worrying about that. He just happens to be a proponent of the positionless offense genius.

  19. primacyone 02/21/2007 at 1:33 PM #

Maybe Fells scores 40 tonight and then goes pro after next year??????

“No, just one person worrying about that. He just happens to be a proponent of the positionless offense genius”

where have I said that? Didn’t think so.

we don’t sign a big man when Ben & JJ leave we’ll be in big trouble. My question is, where would the scholly come from?

  22. Rochester 02/21/2007 at 1:46 PM #

It’s a legitimate question on the scholarships. If they offer Gonzalez, something has to give. Either someone (Smith?) doesn’t make it to campus or someone leaves (Big Lew?).

I outgrew my red WP Blazer. I recently contacted Joe Sugars and they had a few left from a special order for the WPC for about $300 (wool with WP lining and logo) and some red poly mix blazers with no logo from Hardwick for about $180. They also has some black Pam Beach WP blazers.

Its a shame people think of the Red wool blazers as bling. I remember about every WP alumni at the 1986 Peach wearing one.

Thank you BoKnows…you summed it up best right there!

For some, it’s all eggs, one basket, no ???’s, even if we’ve never seen a one of these kids play the game yet. What gets me is that whole freshman playing seasons were basically wasted in the past, but now everyone is expected to have definite and immediate impact right off the bat. You can’t fight that thinking.

I hope Sidney doesn’t have a hangover from this season though, that he’ll use and go to his bench quickly and often in the future. We are talking about developing depth, that actually plays early in games, and in earlier their careers, starting next season. That, along with this coaching staff’s ability to adapt to the talent that’s suited up and waiting to be called, should bode well for us down the road.
