UNC-G Tonight – Last Chance for “Bad Loss”

NC State’s 4th straight game on ESPN-Unavailable could mark an impressive milestone. If the Wolfpack wins tonight (the Spartans are 6-6 and rated in the 180s according to Sagarin), it will have navigated the 2006-07 basketball schedule without a single embarrasing loss, at least based on the caliber of opponent. Reviewing the Pack’s current non-conference losses, only Cincinnati qualifies as a bad opponent, and that loss can’t be considered programatically “embarrassing” because Cincy is the same kind of team we are (rebuilding program in a power conference).

What makes this most notable is that NC State has relied on a maximum rotation of just seven players, one of which is a former walk-on who was only honorable mention all-conference as a senior in high school (hat tip to my recent hard copy of The Wolfpacker, which I read over the holiday weekend). In fact, Engin Atsur and Trevor Ferguson have yet to suit up for the same game yet.

This feels good for those of us old enough to remember the infamous Tampa game or occassional trips to the west coast that saw even Jimmy V’s good teams stumble to at least one lightly regarded foe most years. It is definitely something which this group of players could be justifiably proud.

Admittedly, this more of a “baby step” kind of accomplishment; but taking the first step can create momentum for future ones. And I hope I haven’t invoked a hex on our beloved Iron Seven.

    Dear SFN,

You were like this “_____” close to jinxing us. But I forgive you b/c it was a fun game to listen to on the radio.

    BJD–

Don’t ever do this kind of thread again. Criminy. :^D

What a game down the stretch by McCauley and Grant. And yet another second-half comeback by the Pack.

95-93 Final. UNCG hits yet another 3 at the buzzer. They hit 16 trifectas.

Grant played absolute balls out at the end of regulation. Hit a jumper and a 3 to tie it after shooting poorly early. Then he made a ton of free throws down the stretch.

Oh, and McCauley? How about 26 points, 10 boards, 8 assists, 0 turnovers.

    Survival baby. Survivial.

Good lord… the type of game that’ll give you a heart attack, but the type of game that’s probably good for this team to play– and especially win.

    YEAH PACK!

It is actually fun listening to Tony Haines on the radio. They do a great job describing the style of play, not just play by blabbering. That game was a hoot. Ol’ Coach Lowe probably felt right at home with a NBA score (and NBA like Defense). Greensboro shot terreffic, and they really gave State a huge challenge from beggining to end. A good way, after some rest to enter the ACC.

State had a some shots that wouldn’t go down that were so close, so credit Coach Lowe and the players with really reaching down deep a pulling this one out. When it seems that the other team is shooting the lights out and you get a couple that just roll of therim, it’s easy to get a little discouraged. Not so easy for this group, they just seem to reach down a little deeper and try harder. Damn, McCauley is a freak!

Fergueson and Horner are both proving to be pretty reliable. I know there were alot of questions coming into Lowe’s first season (that’s the understatement of the night), but these two players have really stepped up big. Horner as a true frosh, and Ferg with two years out of competitive basketball. Haines kept mentioning how well Fergueson feeds the post. I’m sure Hickson, Smith s well as some potential ’08 targets like Davila would like to see some footage of that. That seemed to be missing the last couple years, a real confident post feeder. Let’s hope they remember the mop head and kick it out for a three once in awhile.

    McCAULEY!!!

We escaped the embarassing lost, but those guys are good. Not good enough that we should have to go to overtime, but given the conference they are in they may make it to the big dance.

There were somethings that we could have done better, but this year any win is a good win. This is fun. “Never give up”.

The next SOB that starts a thread like this, I’m going to hunt down and “make lunch meat” for some of Wendell’s wild boars! You just don’t know how superstitious I’ve gotten over the years about State basketball! Don’t ever start this crap again or there will be serious repercussions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL! But, darnit, I’m serious! I’ve done everything but wear Pete Maravich’s old dirty socks to turn this BB program around and then you throw a monkey wrench into this game!

I’ve only got digital in one bedroom and walked in there to check the game in the first half and State was getting clobbered. I immediately left, hoping for a turnaround. I didn’t go back until there was 4 minutes in the game! Thank God, Jimmy V, Coach Case, Coach Sloan, the Virgin Mary, the Exorcist, and Ben McCauley for pulling it out!

Herb would have been laughing his ass off if WC had beaten us!!!!!!! Well, that’s 10 down and 10 to go to make the NCAA’s!!!!! Go Pack! Sid, you’re the man!!!!!

    Phew… what a close one.

I assume Atsur will be suiting up against BC..

and for everyone who didn’t watch the game-

Fells was great. Good mid range jumper.

    McCauley can do it all.

Grant is pathetic at ball handling and makes stupid mistakes. We need to move him back to SF.

is there something wrong with Nieman? If not, why the heck isn’t he getting any PT?

Gavin played absolutely awful for about 36 minutes, then he took that charge and made those crucial plays down the stretch. I hope that gives him some of his confidence back, cause he’s been a shell of the player he was early in the season.

I have never seen a better passing big man than McCauley. His pass to Fells near the beginning of the game was amazing, you could barely see the ball touch his hands before it was gone again.

    It’s a W. Way too close for comfort, but it’s still a W.

I do like the fact that we have the ability to pull one out of our ass. That could come in handy.

  13. BJD95 01/02/2007 at 10:21 PM #

Nieman must have done something to land in the doghouse, as I thought he has been playing really well. Wow, that was a tough one. I only had the radio, but our crew did a good job painting a picture for me.

For reference purposes, 3 ACC teams do have “bad losses” on the season – Virginia (App State), BC (Vermont, Duquesne), and Miami (Buffalo, Cleveland State, Binghamton).

I really, really hope that 3 at the end and overall solid play down the stretch by Grant give him a boost of much-needed confidence. We need him right and believing in himself heading into ACC play. Getting Atsur back (as Sid said is a good chance for Saturday) would help, obviously.

When was a last time one player was pretty clearly our best EVERYTHING (scorer, passer, rebounder, defender)? That’s pretty clearly Ben McCauley this year. Just imagine if those rumors of Big Ben tranferring to Xavier had come to fruition >…

    McCauley
    Costner
    Fells
    Grant
    Ferguson
    Horner

If those 6 men maintain their health and play the kind of minutes we’re going to need from this year….. they will be the ABSOLUTE EPITOME of BATTLE HARDENED and READY FOR WAR come 07/08. How can they not???? Particularly Costner and McCauley…. because even if/when Engin comes back…. we’ve still got NO backup “bigs”…. so they’re going to log some serious minutes of college basketball…. ACC basketball no less.

I came into this year expecting the worst, but obviously hoping for the best…… and what i’m learning is…. this team has an “iron will” and in spite of playing with a lack of concentration through periods of time…. they dig deep when they feel the game slipping away and somehow find a way to keep that beacon of optimism burning brightly, and ultimately find a way to persevere. You canNOT teach “that”…. you can only MOTIVATE “that”….. it doesn’t matter how well “schooled” your players are… if you can’t motivate them to dig deep and find that extra bit of fire… then you are destined for failure, or mediocrity at best. Sid can motivate. That’s all i’m saying about that.

The defense is going to be tough all year…. because you play D with your legs, and our legs are going to be tired more than they’re going to be fresh. They’ve got to find a way to keep every game close…. and then dig deep for that inner fire late in games.

    KEEP THE BEACON BURNING BOYS.

That is some textbook Jimmy V stuff right there

You left off VT with a bad loss, they lost to Marshall the other night. They also lost to Western Michigan and while they have been a good team in the past, they are not that good this year, so that’s a pretty bad loss too. They get a pass for losing to Southern Illinois, because the Salukis are pretty darn good again this year.

Wake also has 2 borderline bad losses. Is South Florida in the Big East in basketball now? Even if they are, they’re not Big East quality. A team that has lost to Texas A&M Corpus Christi (not Texas A&M) and Missouri STATE (not Mizzou) is a bad team to lose to. Also, while Air Force is a good team this year, losing by 36 after being down by 24 at the half is a bad loss.

Uhhh McCauley is nowhere NEAR our best rebounder. Our best rebounder is far and away Costner. It’s not even close.

[…] If you want a positive to take away, here’s one – we have fairly consistently handled the competition in our “tier” (i.e., against lower division major conference teams and mid/low majors). As SFN noted earlier this month, this young, undermanned team suffered no embarrassing losses (from a program standpoint). We played an awful Wake team, and won handily. State has hung in against “middle tier” teams like Cincinnati, West Virginia, UVA, and Michigan, winning the home contest. And against “first division” teams like Duke, Alabama, Clemson, and Boston College…we got our asses handed to us. […]
