UNC-G Tonight – Last Chance for “Bad Loss”

NC State’s 4th straight game on ESPN-Unavailable could mark an impressive milestone. If the Wolfpack wins tonight (the Spartans are 6-6 and rated in the 180s according to Sagarin), it will have navigated the 2006-07 basketball schedule without a single embarrasing loss, at least based on the caliber of opponent. Reviewing the Pack’s current non-conference losses, only Cincinnati qualifies as a bad opponent, and that loss can’t be considered programatically “embarrassing” because Cincy is the same kind of team we are (rebuilding program in a power conference).

What makes this most notable is that NC State has relied on a maximum rotation of just seven players, one of which is a former walk-on who was only honorable mention all-conference as a senior in high school (hat tip to my recent hard copy of The Wolfpacker, which I read over the holiday weekend). In fact, Engin Atsur and Trevor Ferguson have yet to suit up for the same game yet.

This feels good for those of us old enough to remember the infamous Tampa game or occassional trips to the west coast that saw even Jimmy V’s good teams stumble to at least one lightly regarded foe most years. It is definitely something which this group of players could be justifiably proud.

Admittedly, this more of a “baby step” kind of accomplishment; but taking the first step can create momentum for future ones. And I hope I haven’t invoked a hex on our beloved Iron Seven.

You just couldn’t wait until AFTER the game, could you.

Could be 10-4 around #150 in the RPI heading into the league.

    That is better than expectations.

BC (on Sat) is struggling right now.

UVa isn’t tearing it up right now and are coming to the RBC soon.

VPI isn’t as good as many thought.

Wake and Miami are not very good.

Beating the expectations for this year (that included a presumption that Engin Atsur would be healthy) is a very real possibility.

Any word on Engin for tonight?

At the risk of starting a “Sidney Lowe Sunshine Squad” I have been really pleased with the result from the BB program. Perfect, no. Some problem areas, yes. Even with the warts I like to watch this team – I haven’t nodded off during any of the games I’ve seen (as compared to past years). The Pack is back!

I have heard Atsur will NOT play tonight but should suit up for BC.

On embarrassing losses.. could some of our not very good conference brethren qualify?

I’m not sure if Cincy can’t be spun to the “not-bad-loss” column, since we had a super-human brain-fart and committed 32 turnovers. If we take better care of the ball, throughout the rest of the season, the loss can be explained as a by product of a “bad breakfast” leading to excessive “cranial-gas-emissions” and ignored as not being indicative of how this team plays.

The first 5 games of ACC play will say it all. BC, Clempson, Wake, Duke, and VT. There are 4 potential wins there (and postseason eligibility) the way the scheduling stacks up. After that is gets progressively harder. Its basically “now” or “next year” for the ‘Pack.

Gene – I think that’s by far our worst loss.

I think the losses to WVa and Alabama are certainly understandable. I think the UVa loss is understandable as well.

I still have my NCAA pipedream alive and well.

so no atsur tonihgt, what are the chances of seeing the football players on the court. or hearing their sneakers on the court as i will be there only by way of wolfpack radio. btw- are the football guys even dressing out for games or are they just practice squad?

  11. sautz 01/02/2007 at 4:51 PM #

I don’t know if the football guys are dressing or not, but looking at the roster on GoPack it looks like we have an abundance of practice squaders:

Davis played the last minute on Saturday and missed two shots.

No ACC loss is “programatically” embarrassing. No other ACC member has a roster that we are head and shoulders superior to.

WVU shockingly smacked UConn around over the weekend. I’m still glad he’s not our coach, but Beilein can be decent with pretty much anything.

^I was making a little joke about the ‘quality’ of some of the conference teams of course.

Here’s to hoping we are not proven to be among them.

4 wins in the next 5 ACC games? It will tell it all as we will most likely be a NCAA team. I think 3 is the best we can hope for. BC is a toss up… even if Atsur plays he will likely be out of sync.
Klem is undefeated and ranked. The jury is out as they have made this type of start and typically swooned in the past, but they have a good coach. This too will be tough.
    Wake should be a win
    Dook should be a loss
    VT could be a win.

So that’s 2 probable wins if we have our team pegged about right, 1 loss and 2 that are going to be tough tough wins to get.

I say 3 wins is very good and certainly means no cellar and probable NIT.
4 wins means bubble watch the rest of the season.
5 wins.. will not happen. (never does)

We will need to get the majority of our wins in the first half of the conference season.

Look for Sid to really emphasize rebounding, and player control. UNCG’s big force is 6’6″ Hines, who has some crazy streak of double-doubles going. He is an impressive, powerful looking ball player. When UNCG played in Cameron this year, K had McRoberts and help everytime Hiines got the ball in the low post. Not many other scores on these team so it will interesting to see if Lowe decides to double down or give McCauley or Costner the assignment to distrupt him.

The other thing to watch for is player control and poise on the offensive end. UNCG has been taking alot of charges so far this year. Our lack of depth and tendancy to TO the ball in bunchs at times will both come into play if UNCG can get a few early charges called on our guys.

  16. Gene 01/02/2007 at 5:53 PM #

How well or badly we do really depends on how quickly Atsur gets well. Without out him, can beat Wake Forest and Miami, though as we saw with Cincy, anything can happen. With Atsur I think we can legitametly compete for middle of the back in the ACC.

  17. gopack968 01/02/2007 at 7:30 PM #

Uhhh… six minutes left in the first quarter and we are down by 4…

Perhaps this was an unwise topic?

Hope not. But I gotta say I never talked to the kicker before a big field goal attempt.

  18. Rochester 01/02/2007 at 7:52 PM #

UNCG has stayed in this one by nailing 3’s at an unconscious level. I’ll be shocked if they can keep that up all game. We all saw it the past few years in reverse. We’d smoke from the perimeter for 20 minutes and use up all our makes. Same thing will happen to the Spartans. Especially if we decide to play defense.

Offensively this has been one of our best halves of the year. Fells looks great. McCauley is a stud as always. And Ferguson has made a huge difference since coming in for Horner.

  19. tvp 01/02/2007 at 8:06 PM #

Damn…you guys may have spoke too soon.

  20. Red_Terrors 01/02/2007 at 8:10 PM #

This second half is starting to get ugly.

  21. breherif 01/02/2007 at 8:18 PM #

Thank you Dennis = 3pt and a block

  22. vtpackfan 01/02/2007 at 8:22 PM #

Guys are playing a little tight in the second half. Hines is the real deal, that’s why Dook doubled him all day. The loose balls are what bother me tonight. If they go our way just a few times, maybe that can spark some easy busckets. If not , then ooops…

I am a big Atsur guy. He’s gutsy, and skilled, but when is enough, enough? If what is reported is true, and after he tries practicing it gets sore again, then that is troubling. I’m sure the way his senior year is going is killing him, so I shouldn’t have much to bitch about.

  23. Red_Terrors 01/02/2007 at 8:34 PM #

Those sloppy passesare killing us…along with uncg’s lights out 3-point shooting.

  24. Red_Terrors 01/02/2007 at 8:56 PM #

    OT!!!!

  25. vtpackfan 01/02/2007 at 9:03 PM #

GG showing a true scores mentality. “Slump, what slump?” now if we can only go an extra five w/o Fells and Costner picking up the fifth personel. Nieman should be fresh, has he sat this whole game?
